This podcast is dedicated to artists of all sorts from rapper to Baristas.

There’s no set definition of art. Previous guests on this podcast include DJ James Nasty and Eze Jackson. Also, this podcast was fueled by Trump’s comments about Baltimore. Rob Lee thought it is important to show the reality of Baltimore.

There’s too much external and internal focus on crime and negativity which depersonalizes a community of people, ideas and cultures that make Baltimore unique and familiar. He thought putting together a podcast with people he admires in and around the city would be better than releasing weekly diss tracks against the POTUS.

This week Rob Lee sits down with Aunt Kelly from Aunt Kelly’s Cookies as well as Kris of Sophomore Coffee. Both businesses are operated by unique, artsy folks, Kelly at Aunt Kelly’s Cookies and Kris at Sophomore Coffee, that chose to set up shop in Baltimore. These are real people who are doing something positive in Baltimore and want to succeed here.

The above message is from Aunt Kelly's Cookies Official site – that commitment is tasted in every bite. Rob Lee visited the bakery during the summer for an event on Antiques Row in Baltimore.

He was surprised that a shop baked butter crunch cookies since typically Linden Cookies has that style sewn up, locally. Weeks later Rob went back wanting something sweet and he met, Aunt Kelly, learned about the story behind the bakery and, of course got some cookies.

Aunt Kelly’s cookies presents a sense of nostalgia with the Butter Crunch cookies, which were a staple of middle and high school cafeterias in Baltimore, and Baltimore, since the physical location is on Antiques Row.

Sophomore Coffee

Rob Lee drinks a lot of coffee. Much like beer, Rob is a snob for coffee meaning he won’t drink just any coffee. So Rob had apprehension when he first visited Sophomore. He thought it would be the hipster coffee place. It is but in the best, warmest and most inclusive way. It’s hipster in the since that there’s a variety of people and items from Vegan Donuts to Oat milk. They’re accommodating, knowledgeable and welcoming.

Coffee and coffee education is what comes to mind when thinking of Sophomore Coffee. They do it right. Sophomore makes the coffee experience an enjoyable experience.

An experience that Rob does weekly. Getting coffee from Sophomore is like visiting your friends. The coffee experience is more important than going to Dunkin’ and getting some slug. The coffee experience is one that should be looked at with eagerness. Sophomore captures that.

In this new episode, Rob Lee welcomes, Eze Jackson.. Eze as a talented rapper from Baltimore and the frontman of the band Soul Cannon. At the time of this recording, Eze’s latest project, Fool, just dropped but Eze didn’t come on the show to only talk about the project he had a lot to say about activism, Baltimore vs. DMV and an “orange bitch” taking ill of Charm City. Eze was there for all of the smoke.

He’s No Fool

Eze is not just a rapper. He’s an activist, journalist and versatile artist with a self-awareness and mindfulness that many artists conceal. He’s an open guy. The new project, Fool, really gets into experiences from trauma to triumph that he’s encountered.

On of the biggest observations taken from the interview with Eze Jackson is he’s aware. Not woke but aware, there’s an authenticity and certainty in his awareness. There’s realism and passion, insight and understanding. Mostly there’s love coming from Eze – love for people, love for Baltimore and love for art.

The legendary duo, Rob Lee & Dann D., are children of the 1980’s. So this episode is a love letter of sorts to the now-defunct production company. Rob Lee did and he found the TigerSharks. Rankin/Bass Productions had a formula and it was recycled over and over. Those recycled ideas were then copied to varying degrees of success. The copying got the legendary duo thinking – “How can we capitalize on this?” In the last section of this podcast, you’ll see what the legendary duo comes up with. For those who don’t remember these cartoons, where’s a brief refresher of some of the cartoons discussed on this episode?

Rankin/Bass

Per Wikipedia - Rankin/Bass Productions was an American production company, known for its seasonal television specials, particularly its work in stop-motion animation. Rankin/Bass stop-motion features are recognizable by their visual style of doll-like characters with spheroid body parts, and ubiquitous powdery snow using an animation technique called "Animagic". Often, traditional cel animation scenes of falling snow would be projected over the action to create the effect of a snowfall. Nearly all of the studio's animation was outsourced to at least five Japanese animation companies. The quality of the animation is what hooked a young Rob Lee.

ThunderCats

ThunderCats was an animated television series that debuted in 1985 rebooted in 2011 – which wasn’t that bad. The premise included cat-like humanoid aliens on a planet called Third Earth. The ThunderCats, led by Lion-O, fought the Mutants of Plun-Darr, led by Mumm-Ra, for the next four seasons.

SilverHawks

SilverHawks is one of those cartoons classed by Rob Lee as “if you know, you know”. Essentially, SilverHawks was the space equivalent of ThunderCats. SilverHawks was 65-episodes of heroes who were “partly metal, partly real” battling the evil Mon*Star and his intergalactic mob featuring Mumbo-Jumbo, Pokerface, Windhammer and, who could forget, Melodia.

Tigersharks

To round out this trio of Rankin/Bass Productions cartoons is TigerSharks. TigerSharks proves the law of dimishing returns and that you can only go back to the well so many times. In this instance three is too many times. Where ThunderCats and SilverHawks were successful – the formula – TigerSharks failed. The show lasted only 26-episodes despite featuring the many of the same voice actors from ThunderCats and SilverHawks. Further, the 26-episode series featured the protectors of Water-O, Mako and the TigerSharks battling villians like the Mantanas and Captain Bizzarly. Additionally, the show was a part of The Comic Strip, a show containing animated shorts. TigerSharks didn’t have its own slot like its more successful predecessors. TigerSharks made a cameo on the 2011 ThunderCats reboot. The TigerSharks wasn’t good and aided the end of Rankin/Bass Productions – but making fun of it led to one of the legendary duo’s funniest Oneshots.

Diablo Doughnuts

By far, my favorites were the Chesapeake, smores, blackberry lime, and maple bacon. Even as a lifelong Baltimorean, I had my doubts about crab seasoning on a doughnut, but my god, the Chesapeake works perfectly! The s'more doughnut is like a fluffy Boston creme, substituting the creme for a large toasted marshmallow on top. Which while we're on the subject, the créme brûlée is delicious with a sugary hardtop and a creme that I can only describe to you as smooth homemade vanilla pudding. The blackberry lime is tart in a good way. I'm not ashamed to admit I licked the sugary remnants of blackberry off my fingertips. And the maple bacon is the perfect mix of sweet and savory, a combination that's been done before but not on this level. Diablo Doughnuts is a must-have if you haven't experienced gourmet doughnuts with originality and incredible taste.  -CCC
