We're in our first week of Daylight Savings Time here in the U.S., and that one less hour of sleep must have permeated its way through the sports world, too. We've got fans looking to throw chairs at players and/or getting escorted off in handcuffs during games for being too rambunctious.

Meanwhile, Long Island University has already won the Northeast Conference because its title game opponent is ineligible due to silly Division II and III to Division I transfer rules.

There's other silliness (and some great basketball) going on, but we're also taking a break to revisit the swath of excellent sports movies from the 90s, from Rookie of the Year to The 6th Man.

And we've unfortunately seen several star players go out with injuries, but it isn't the death knell you'd expect for most of their teams. Plus, Joey and Sean go to an Austin Spurs game. Proclaiming Games Are Over Before They're Over is Boisterously Dumb

You may have noticed the Chicago Bears were down by 18 points to the Green Bay Packers at halftime during their game in the NFC Wild Card round. Sports fans everywhere said the game was over. The Bears were a fluke. The Packers would win easily with Jordan Love playing the whole game. Chicago is cold.

Okay, that last part is accurate, but all too often, we see people putting down a team during a game, and then that team comes back and wins. And people far pettier than us will keep those receipts and make you look silly. Talking trash during a game is all well and good—just remember to finish it off. Which, you know, is tough for fans, because none of us are actually playing in the game.

The NFC South Race is Fittingly Dumb

We’re in a nostalgic mood as part of our last episode of the year, so we’re diving into some of our favorite, most memorable, and dumbest moments from 2025. You’ll hear about the Luka Doncic trade, a bizarre stretch of behavior from Puka Nacua, and an insane amount of wild games on March 27.

Plus, Sean received a lovely box of cookies as a gift but has to contend with ants. And many years ago, Joey missed the opportunity to play basketball with Adam Sandler. It still bums him out to this day.

The College Football Playoff Selection Process is Perplexing Dumb

Sean and Joey both attended the University of Miami (Sean in grad school, Joey in undergrad), and they're thrilled the Hurricanes are participating in the College Football Playoff. Does that mean they understand how they got here? Certainly not!

Notre Dame was ranked ahead of Miami in every previous installment of the rankings, continued beating teams by a lot, and then dropped out. BYU beat every team on its schedule not named Texas Tech and fell out of the rankings after sounding losing its conference championship game. Alabama also badly lost its conference championship game and suffered no consequences. Miami was rewarded for not playing a conference championship game.

If all this back and forth doesn't make your head spin, kudos to you. You're very brave.

Plus, Joey and Sean share highlights from their trips to New York City and St. Lucia, respectively. And we might be doing a future episode from the top of a mountain. Unclear.

NFL Parity is Refreshingly Dumb

We're a month away from the NFL playoffs, and...is any team good? Are typically good teams bad? In any given week, it seems like a team could emerge victorious, then turn around and completely fall apart a mere week later. That World Series Wasn't Dumb, But Some of the Discourse Around It Sure Was

Overdoing It On Dopplegangers and "Play of the Year" Designations R Ambitiously Dumb

A Delightfully Dumb Weekend of Historic Sports Performances

It was a bonkers weekend of sports with multiple record-setting events. Sure, we're lamenting about the Miami Hurricanes losing a stunner at home and Jerry Jones refusing to install blinds so the Dallas Cowboys aren't blinded by the sun during late afternoon games.

But we're also covering Shohei Ohtani's bonkers NLCS Game 4 performance and the Denver Broncos with a previously unheard of level of comeback, which included a whopping 33 points in the fourth quarter.

Suing LeBron James for a Hennessy Ad is Laughably Dumb

Recently, LeBron James teased a "Decision, Part 2." To people in the marketing field like Joey, this setup felt like the basis of an ad. Even to sports people such as Sean, the immediate response was not, "Oh, let me buy some expensive basketball tickets."

That WAS the response for at least one dumb fan, and now he's suing LeBron for intentionally deceiving the public. Our tax dollars are going to this court case. We hope the judge laughs in his face and makes him pay his own way for wasting everyone's time.

Plus, Sean is riding high on the Texas Longhorns' big victory over the Oklahoma Sooners in the setting of the State Fair of Texas. And as of the time we recorded this, Joey doesn't know that the Cubs eventually got eliminated from the playoffs. What a joyous feeling of ignorant bliss.

Preseason College Football Rankings R Prematurely Dumb

Texas and Penn State were the preseason #1 and #2 teams before the college football season began. It's now Week 7 and both of those teams are completely out of the Top 25. It's almost like we're just wildly guessing at the quality of teams, and maybe we should play some games before arbitrarily assigning rankings!

This was also one of the wildest NFL weeks in recent memory, so we're breaking down the chaos of games like Niners/Rams (which included a crazy pre-game moment with Mac Jones) and Titans/Cardinals, a game where a snap bouncing off the quarterback's face was only like the fourth-most bonkers thing to happen.

Plus, Joey takes a trip to Corpus Christi and participates in some fantastic activities, like horseback riding on the beach and Moke driving. And we've got a special guest delivering a rant on yet ANOTHER player dropping the ball before scoring a touchdown.

Rapidly Rushing the Field and Showboat Bobbles R "Look Out!" Dumb

Virginia upset a top-ten opponent in Florida State. Fans rushed the field before the ball even touched the ground. Thankfully, the two players in the corner of the end zone are alive and didn't get trampled by, you know, hordes of people like they were a plague of locusts o'er the land.

Meanwhile, Colts wide receiver Adonai Mitchell made one of the most impressive catches we've seen so far this year. He then did some nifty spins and jukes and was running free toward the end zone when he decided to showboat. Alas, the ball rolled out of his hand and out of bounds for a touchback. Whoopsie!

Plus, the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers end in a tie, some unhinged press conference moments, and the rollercoaster experience that is watching Baker Mayfield. What a weekend.

A Sporting Event Dividing Sports R Dumb is Frustratingly Dumb

Kerfuffles About WNBA Scuffles R Snuffily Dumb

There have been a lot of fights in the WNBA lately. Caitlin Clark is involved in a handful of them, largely because the entire league seems to dislike her. Yet some of the reactions and coverage of these fights is very holier than thou.

Plus, Joey had the most active vacation one could possibly indulge in, with kayaking, golfing, surfing, and yoga on the beach in Port Aransas. And then he went to Chicago and watched the White Sox win a 1-0 game with nary a single giveaway. But he did get to see a play at the plate and a catcher throw a runner out at third after a strikeout, so that’s something.

Also, apologies for the audio on this one. Joey accidentally recorded on his computer mic instead of his high-quality mic. WHOOPS. Good to know we still make mistakes even after multiple years of doing this podcast.

ESPN canceled long-time program Around the Horn, a staple for both Sean and Joey during their formative years and into adulthood. The show had a terrific run, but we're more concerned with what ESPN is replacing it with: nothing of note.

We're running out of shows that highlight sports journalism and instead just want talking heads that can either break news or yell at each other. And sure, ATH had those moments of banter, as well, but it was often grounded with respect and journalistic integrity. It's going to be rough having less of that on the airwaves.

Blaming One Call or Play for a Team's Loss is Short-Sightedly Dumb

Joey is back after an east coast adventure, and quite a bit happened! He went to an Orioles game, a Phillies game, made a few friends, had some laughs, and went to a Miami Hurricanes watch party in New York City. Never has there been so much anxiety in one room!

Miami won on a Hail Mary that was overturned, and people got enraged. They yelled things like, "How could you say there was indisputable evidence?" or suggesting the NCAA is rigged. These same folks seem to conveniently overlook other elements from the game like Virginia Tech failing at a fake field goal or being extremely casual with time management on the final drive.

As it turns out, a game consists of more than just one play. And this is hardly the only context where it's happened. So, try not to overreact too much to one moment, yeah? It's a good rule for life in general.

Since we recorded, we also lost sports legends Dikembe Mutombo and Pete Rose. Our thoughts are with their families, and we hope you do a finger wag or make a graceful slide in their honor.

It’s Joey’s birthday celebration, and he’s already been distressed by a cake promotion at his local grocery store, but we’re powering through! Unfortunately, today’s topic is also powering through sports, and that’s real dumb.

We’re seeing just about every player doing the “too small” taunt to opponents. And people are referring to everyone as “him,” or, even worse, saying, “I’m him” after making a play. A person in Joey’s rec league did this. As Sean notes, if you are paying to play in a league, you are, in fact, not him.

The NBA is back! It officially tips off tonight with the Los Angeles Lakers playing the world-champion Denver Nuggets, while the Phoenix Suns and Golden State Warriors welcome new players onto their already pretty good rosters.

But we don't really care about those games in particular. Instead, we're looking at the season as a whole as we make dumb predictions. Could two players both get ejected in the same game for kicking someone in the crotch? What kind of prop will Patrick Beverley use this year to try and sway an official's call? Which player will lead the league in scoring?

We're figuring it all out, and we're doing it in beautifully dumb style. Happy NBA, y'all.

This happens across sports. Why do so many fans feel obliged to personally attack people they've never met and probably are never going to meet? You wouldn't do that directly to someone's face in a 1-on-1 setting, so why do it from behind a keyboard or in a group mob?

Other times, we want them to be wrong so that it favors our team or a more fun outcome, and the officials ultimately make the right decision. Don't they know we want to be entertained?!

The first down from this nifty New England Patriots lateral was overturned. A holding penalty not being called on a two-point conversion prevented the Denver Broncos from fully capitalizing on this wild Hail Mary.

This comes on the heels of Harden requesting a trade (specifically to the Los Angeles Clippers) and the 76ers ending trade talks when they couldn't pull that move off. It's more offseason drama we don't need, but it sure does make for some fascinating content.

This is now the third time in three years Harden has requested a trade from his team. It's also extra silly because he opted into an extra year of his contract when he could have just signed with the Clippers as a free agent.

It makes no sense geographically, but it does add sweet sweet dollars to the pockets of conference executives. Unfortunately, it hurts athletes from just about every other sport.

In sports like basketball and football, the annual All-Star Game and Pro Bowl, respectively, are filled with low-effort attempts at defense, with flashiness the main item on the agenda. In the Major Leagues, there's TOO much effort, which makes the All-Star Game feel a bit like every other contest of the 162-game season.

Ancillary events can be pretty dumb, too. Julio Rodriguez hit 41 home runs in the first round and didn't end up winning because he hit too many home runs in the first round. Aaron Gordon was a phenomenal dunker in the 2016 Slam Dunk Contest and in subsequent years and still has not won a Dunk Contest.

Plus, it's about time for Sean's fantasy football league to start up again. Has he thought enough about his keepers for the upcoming season? Tanking Your Season is Lazily Dumb

People Filling Out Brackets R Overconfidently Dumb

Joey's favorite time of year is March Madness. The NCAA Tournament, baby! He loves filling out brackets and following along with all of the thrilling chaos. Who will be this year's Cinderella? Can he correctly predict the champion? Will he defeat his smug coworker by selecting the proper 11/6 upset?

Meanwhile, Sean HATES the idea of filling out brackets. He hasn't done it for nearly a decade. And he believes people who do it are way too overconfident in their ability, even though they have virtually zero chance of completing a perfect bracket.

Regardless of your feelings on brackets, the games themselves are delightful. Sean and I even attended some in-person last year — and Sean saw his uncle being interviewed by a local news team! Wild. As Gus Johnson would say, "This is March Madness!"

All-Star Games R Exhibitionistly Dumb

Back in the day, the All-Star Game meant something, dammit! But now, nobody seems to really care — defense is non-existent, rules are brazenly broken, and players understandably don't want to get hurt in a game that doesn't count. So, what could the solution be?

We don't really have one. But we do know having the winner of an All-Star Game get rewarded come championship time — like how Major League Baseball gave home-field advantage to the league that won — is a terrible idea. At the very least, let's bring back those old All-Star jerseys!

Turns out, not understanding how something works is a great way to lose money. Now, with FTX crashing and burning, people are panicking. And the Miami Heat play in an arena named after the defunct crypto exchange. Athletes including Odell Beckham Jr. and Andre Iguodala have signed Bitcoin deals in lieu of a traditional money salary, and that hasn't worked out well.

Delay of Game Penalties R Long Pause Dumb

In any other sport, if you have the ball in your hand when a clock strikes zero, there's some kind of penalty. In football, the play clock often hits zero but the officials make no call because they are busy looking at the ball, then up at the clock, then back to the player snapping the ball.

Luckily, Sean and I have come up with some clever ways to solve this issue that only involves a minor mutiny or amount of electroshock. And you're going to learn a LOT about how the NFL uses RFID technology, and that's a pretty cool thing (all in less than 15 minutes, to boot!).

This episode really takes a turn though when Sean talks about a video game that simulated being in an electric chair. Joey has never heard of such a machine, but apparently it's featured in multiple arcades throughout the country. Did you ever play this game?

Intentional Fouls R Pretty Dumb
