Monday, February 14th, held special significance for the Degree family. Not only was it Valentine’s Day, but it also marked Iquilla and Harold's 12th wedding anniversary—a day filled with love for the world, and a celebration of the love that formed their family. Tragically, this day would be marred by the disappearance of a beloved family member.

For nearly forty years, travelers along Route 16 near Fayetteville West Virginia, were met with a billboard featuring blurry photos of five children. Each child had dark hair and solemn eyes. Below the images were their names and ages—Maurice, 14; Martha, 12; Louis, 9; Jennie, 8; and Betty, 5. Accompanying their names was speculation about their fate.

The small town with a main street barely a hundred yards long, was steeped in rumors regarding the case, with speculation often outweighing concrete evidence. There was even disagreement about whether the children were actually dead. With this episode of Still Unsolved, we hope to find answers. This is the case, of the Sodder Family. 

In a desolate rice field, two miles north of Katy, Texas, flames engulfed a luxurious Jaguar Sedan on November 8th, 1985. Among the wreckage, sheriff’s deputies discovered charred human remains. The remains were so horrifically disfigured that discerning the gender proved impossible. The police could only look into the owner of the vehicle, and that is where they found their first clue. The vehicle belonged to Edward Gerald Baker, a 52-year-old millionaire from Houston. Subsequent forensic examinations overwhelmingly confirmed the grim truth - the incinerated body was indeed his.

At around 4 p.m., an announcement was made to the shoppers of the Wonderland Mall that a child was missing. As the mall began to clear out, the local police arrived and began to conduct their search for the missing boy. This search would become one of the longest searches in Michigan’s history. While it was ultimately unsuccessful, it did bring about one very surprising suspect - a suspect you wouldn't believe. This is the case, of D'wan Sims. 

On January 2, 1935, at 1:20 p.m., a lone man checked into the President Hotel in downtown Kansas City.

He had no luggage besides a comb and a toothbrush and asked for an interior room on a high floor of the hotel. He checked in under the name Roland T. Owen and complained to the bellboy about the outrageous prices of a neighboring hotel. After checking in and receiving his room, Room 1046 on the 10th floor, he left the hotel, only to be seen intermittently throughout his stay.

The staff wouldn’t give his behavior another thought until days later when the man turned up dead, his hotel room a brutal bloodbath.

This will forever remain one of the strangest mysteries in existence. A forty-four-year-old woman lived her life in constant fear of an attacker. Over a span of seven years, she would be harassed by an unknown individual, leading to more than 100 police reports of stalking. They would call her to threaten her or breathe into the phone until she hung up in a panic. They would lurk around her home at night, even going as far as to cut her phone line. Authorities were puzzled by the lack of evidence. Eventually, they would believe that they were being fooled. This led to a near complete disinterest in continuing her investigation - until the young woman turned up dead. This is the case of Cindy James. 

Out of the many cases of people disappearing, this is one of the most chilling. It is also one of the hardest ones to make sense of. By all accounts, this man lived a happy and fruitful life with his wife and two children. Then, he suddenly went missing one day. On the same night that he went missing, his wife received a phone call from him, where she heard sounds that may not have even been human. That recording set the tone for one of the most unsettling investigations Minnesota has ever seen. In this episode of Still Unsolved, we look at the case of Henry McCabe.

Cheri Jo Bates, an 18-year-old college freshman, was stabbed and slashed to death on the grounds of Riverside City College. Police determined the assailant had disabled the ignition coil wire and distributor of Bates' Volkswagen Beetle as a method to lure her from her car as she studied in the college library. Many believe that she was the first victim of the infamous Zodiac Killer.

On the fateful morning of November 6th, 2001, Dorthy Harris made her customary trip to the bank. That is where her routine deviates from its usual outcome. Shortly after that trip to the bank, A customer entering the Florence Hair Salon would discover Dorthy's lifeless body in the store's walkway. What followed was an investigation that has remained unsolved for decades. The investigators believe they had their man, but they let him slip away - leaving several families without any closure. But perhaps that can change. In this episode of Still Unsolved, we look at the case of the Florence Salon Murders. 

For a period of time, Blair's life was on a smooth trajectory. But that would take an ominous turn one summer. It started with a near-complete change in his demeanor. Colleagues at the construction firm, who once praised him as a cheerful and dependable worker, began noticing a shift. Blair's recent behaviors included acts of irresponsibility that jeopardized his job security, such as leaving his work site unlocked and exposing valuable materials and tools to potential theft. Moreover, he exhibited signs of increasing paranoia, frequently asserting to others that he was being pursued by someone intent on causing him harm - even to the extent of wanting to end his life.

In the chilly dusk of Friday, January 22, 2010, in Brooklyn, New York, 7-year-old Patrick Alford, Jr. was with his foster mother on their way to the trash chute in their high-rise apartment. An unexpected call disrupted the moment, creating a distraction, and in that moment, Patrick vanished. Vanished without a single clue — a mystery lingering for 13 years, with only a lead stretching from his local community to as far as Puerto Rico.

Wayne Williams was apprehended for the killings of two young men in Atlanta, who were believed to be victims of the serial killer. The investigators quickly began wondering if there was more to it, and they quickly began suspecting that he was the perpetrator behind the infamous Atlanta Child Murders.

And it would appear that they were correct.

After his conviction for the two murders, the killings stopped altogether. But somehow, doubts persist regarding his true involvement. Some question whether he was genuinely responsible or merely a convenient scapegoat for law enforcement. Some even say that he took the fall for the murders and that they were committed by the Ku Klux Klan.

This dream is especially hard to reach as a black person, unless you want to become an entertainer. But there was one man who defied the odds and started a successful business. Sadly, his success ended with his life at the hands of a scorned lover. This is the case of Lance Herndon.

September 26, 2023, marked seven years since the disappearance of a young black woman. On this tragic anniversary, the young woman’s mother stood in front of a crowd of people and said something very bold. It turns out that for months, the police have kept the identity of a person of interest a secret. They claimed that they were so uncertain of his involvement in the case, that they didn’t want the public to know who he was. That wasn’t enough for this mother. She knew that this man was one of the last to see her alive. She knew that this man had gone to jail for hurting young black women before. She even spoke to the man, and she knew that he was lying about what happened to her daughter that night. Without the help of the police, she decided to take matters into her own hands. This is the story of Keeshay Jacobs.

In May 2016, a 19-year-old from Tumwater, Washington disappeared. Drivers spotted his car abandoned on the highway with his wallet, cash, food, and his cell phone. The Investigators in this case don’t have any evidence of foul play, but consider the missing person’s case suspicious nonetheless. This young man just vanished into thin air and left little to no evidence that could help us figure out what happened to him. The hope is that the attention on this story will help spark someone’s memory. This is the case of Logan Shendleman.

On the morning of Thursday, July 20th, 1995, a woman placed a call to nine one one. Speaking in a calm and composed manner, she informed the dispatcher that her adopted daughter was nowhere to be found. Following the oddly calm distress call, a substantial number of police officers and volunteers descended upon the Hilltop neighborhood of Tacoma Washington to search for the little girl. The focal point of their efforts was the nearby Target store. Despite their exhaustive search that lasted several hours on that fateful Thursday, they found no trace of her. It was as though she had vanished without a trace.

He didn’t have a single enemy. In fact, he was consistently described as "everybody's friend". On one hand, he was known as a quiet homebody who kept to himself. On the other hand, there wasn't a person he came across who didn't love their interaction with him. But there was one night where that was challenged. The young man was in a place where he was immediately seen as an outsider, and he was surrounded by friends who continued to leave him throughout the night. By the time it was all said and done, the young man was gone forever. To this day, no one can provide any answers for his mother. This is the case of Alonzo Brooks.

This tragic story takes place in New York. Specifically, it all happened in Harlem. It was March 9, 1972, and Harlem was facing dark times. Although it was once a place of great relevance to the positives of black culture, it would soon become an area that faced a lot of turmoil. Drug addicts were beginning to take over the area and crime was following closely behind them. This led to middle-class families fleeing the area of Manhattan and taking refuge in the suburbs of Long Island and Westchester. With them gone, Harlem was now home to some of the poorest citizens of downstate New York. Statistically, almost two-thirds of households were bringing in less than $10,000. Vacant lots peppered the famous streets, and the area now had one of the highest crime rates in the city.

Despite the increase in crime in the area, few could ever imagine the horror the community was about to face.

Twenty-year-old Angela Hammond was a popular young adult, juggling work at a bank with classes at Central Missouri State University. In January 1991, her boyfriend Rob Shafer proposed to her, and they swiftly became engaged. Despite their relatively brief one-year relationship, their compatibility was evident to those around them. Rob, who was an aspiring athlete with military ambitions, and Angela were seen as a good match. Their lives took a significant turn in January 1991 when Angela discovered she was pregnant. The couple was Living together in a rented home at the time and immediately started saving money upon hearing the news. Sadly, their budding family would never get the chance to become complete.

One of the most forgotten aspects of raising a child is the relationship that came before they were born. Two adults meet and develop a connection that goes beyond words. If you're lucky, that love will only continue to grow as time goes on. For a lot of us though, that love dwindles. Sometimes, that love turns into resentment. Jeannette and Dannette Millbrook weren't merely twin sisters; they shared an unbreakable bond as best friends. At the age of 15, they continued to enjoy each other's company, doing nearly everything together. A true testament to how they were raised, the girls were far from troublemakers. In fact, they had a wide circle of friends and a supportive network of family in their hometown of Augusta Georgia.

So, when they failed to return home one evening, an understandable sense of concern consumed everyone who was close to them. An investigation would ensue, but it would face a very familiar roadblock. As one online publication astutely pointed out, the investigation into their disappearance seemed to falter almost as soon as it started. Sadly, the twins share that reality with many other cases of missing black girls.
