We’re opening with 2 Samuel 4–6, and it does not ease you in. Two men murder Saul’s son thinking they’re doing David a favor — and David has them executed. David finally gets the crown he was anointed for years ago, takes Jerusalem, and starts winning. Then Uzzah reaches out to steady the ark of God from falling, and God strikes him dead on the spot.

So we’re asking the hard one: was Uzzah wrong for that? What does it mean that good intentions weren’t enough? And why does David — a whole king — end up dancing in the street in a linen ephod while his wife watches from a window and despises him for it?
