Why? I watch movies but I don’t learn English. Why? 2 1 Nima Farahbod Probably you think watching movies, listening to music, reading books and things like these can improve your English. But when you do them, you don’t feel any progress, do you? [Music] Have you ever thought about how we should proceed? If you are like those people who watch movies while eating popcorn, drinking soda, checking emails, washing dishes, etc. you shouldn’t really expect any improvement. [Music] Now you are wondering how you can learn English with watching, reading, and listening. You need to put time for it, not like when you are on a bus or a subway. You need to write down the new words you find. You need to pause the movie, look up the new words, then write the English definitions in your notebook. You need to pause the movie to practice speaking, repeating and shawdoing the dialogues. A 90-minute movie should take more than 3 hours with this method. And of course, no one expects you to watch it completely in one day. You can always break it into pieces and watch 30 minutes of it with this method every day. [Music] What about reading and listening? Well, it goes the same for them too. When you hear a new word, look it up in dictionary, always check the lyrics. Try singing it for yourself, you don’t need to shout, just repeat it for yourself. When you are reading a book and you face a new word, look it up, and write it down in your notebook. [Music] You can do the same for writing too. Write about your routine, but check for spelling, grammar, vocabulary, writing structures, etc. Check if your writing has an introduction, some supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion. Make sure you are using correct lexis if it is formal. If you have some words in mind that you don’t know them in English, look them up. Make dictionary your best friend. [Music] What now? I have done all these steps, is my English now improved? No, it isn’t. You need to practice it. Repetition matters. There are so many new words in your notebook. What are you waiting for? Go ahead and practice using them every day. Then, after doing it for a while, you can feel that your English is indeed improved. We should put time and effort for things we want to achieve, and that’s one of them. Hope you enjoyed today’s episode.
