Dialogue Options Podcast Episode 297: The Metroid Prime 4 Episode

Greetings listeners!

On this week's episode of the podcast we focus in entirely on our Quest Log. First Joel goes over some of the new additions to the latest season of Fortnite and Kyran tempts Joel with some new details about the latest Destiny 2 expansion, Renegades, which just so happens to be inspired by Star Wars.

Then we move onto the main topic. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is now available for Nintendo Switch 1 + 2 and Kyran has sunk a lot of time into the game so that he could hit credits and bring his relatively fresh (and somewhat messy thoughts) to the show. The result is hopefully not too convoluted as he attempts to put his thoughts out there for a game he has desperately spent years waiting for.

(It will not be the last time he talks about it)

We'll be back next week for our last episode of the year which will focus in on the Game Awards.

Dialogue Options Podcast Episode 280: Elden Ring (Night)reigns Supreme

Firstly, apologies for the weird audio this episode. About 40 minutes into the episode Kyran's PC died randomly (thankfully Audacity was able to save the audio) but unfortunately upon resuming the recording Kyran cockily didn't check which microphone Audacity defaulted to and the result is what he sounds like in the second half of the episode. A one time disaster hopefully.

Rest assured Kyran has learned an important lesson about not trusting Audacity too much.

On this week's episode we get into our first Quest Log of the year as Joel gives TMNT: Splintered Fate the meekest of thumbs up before Kyran dives headfirst into his impressions from the recent closed network test for Elden Ring: Nightreign.

On this week's episode we've got a hefty Quest Log where we break down our early impressions on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth now that we've had more time with the game. Kyran has managed to hit credits but we don't discuss anything really beyond Chapter 4 (or the Lower/Upper Junon segment of the game) so feel free to give it a listen! We're back with another episode! Apologies for the delay, Kyran was feeling a bit under the weather last week and despite the fact that he might not sound much better this week he definitely feels better!

This week's episode is a Quest Log special where we talk about our extended time that we've spent spreading good old fashioned democracy to planets under thread in Helldivers 2, plus Joel offers his early impressions on the recent smash hit poker-based deck building roguelike, Balatro, and Kyran restrains himself from getting too excited with his early hype surrounding Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

Audacity also decided to chew up some of our audio about mid-way through the Helldivers 2 discussion so if you notice a weird jump that's the cause of it. Not some weird time-skip.

Going forward we'll also be moving back to a fortnightly rotation for the foreseeable future ahead of some big life changes for Joel and so we have more time to play games to bring on the show to talk about!

Dialogue Options Podcast Episode 233: Time To Get Over Overwatch?

On this week's episode we dive into our early thoughts on The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (which Kyran talked about pretty extensively on Story Mode this week) from our very own Joel McDonald and very good friend of the show Broderick Gordes. Join us as we gush about what might very well be the new best game of all time, talk about how we find the opening hours and Nintendo's new open world playground (check out this video to see how they solved the open world problem with the original). Kyran also sneaks in some early impressions on the bizarre new puzzle game, Humanity, at the end of the Quest Log.

Meanwhile in the Bonus Round we reconcile with us accepting that Overwatch may be a game we'll be stuck remembering fondly after news broke that Overwatch 2's advertised Hero-focused story mode content that was to feature new enemies, talent trees, and the ability to customise what each heroes abilities would do has officially been canned. In it's place they'll be rolling some content into smaller seasonal PvE experiences. Overwatch is a game that we loved dearly upon its year of release and we were, much like many others, excited by the prospect of exploring this cast of incredible characters from a new story focused perspective and that will now never become reality.

On this week's episode of the show Kyran and Joel kick things off with some spoiler-free thoughts on the recently released Super Mario Bros. Movie, you'll no doubt hear us talk about in more depth in the near future.

Over in the Quest Log we've been spending some time with Black Salt Games' DREDGE, a fishing adventure with a sinister undercurrent. Kyran keeps things relatively light on spoilers for Joel's sake, but it goes without saying that they are both enamoured with this release. It's definitely a game to keep an eye out for come the end of 2023.

We also squeeze in a Bonus Round to talk about some Sony speculation, first is rumours surrounding a new streaming focused handheld codenamed the Q-Lite before moving on to a new patent registered by Sony concerning a new type of Dual Sense controller that could offer deeper immersion by either heating up or cooling down the controller. Dialogue Options Podcast Episode 224: Sampling the Resident Evil 4 Demo

A bit of a weird episode this week with both Joel and Kyran recording in the same room, so if things sound a bit off it's because we're trying to feel out this temporary set up.

We've both played the new demo for Resident Evil 4 Remake and even though the full game is just around the corner we couldn't help but find some time to talk about. In the Quest Log Kyran goes into detail (and successfully gets sent on tangents) about his time with Retro's return to the original 2002 GameCube classic and whether it holds up (spoiler: it does) and Simon fills us in on how he found the demo for Sea of Stars, the new RPG from the developers of The Messenger.

Meanwhile in Dope or Nope we touch on a few stories in varied levels of depth, including a dropped alternate ending for God of War Ragnarok (we avoid spoiling the actual ending, only discussing the one that's been doing the rounds this week), a new mobile RPG from Yoko Taro and SEGA titled 404 Game Re:set -Error Game Reset- that sees SEGA's IPs turned into anime characters, and touch briefly on news that Xbox confirmed Game Pass has shown a decline in game sales and Bloober announcing they've got another project in the pipeline.

We're back with a new episode of the show! We unfortunately had to delay our latest episode by a week or so as Kyran unfortunately ended up catching the spicy cough and having to isolate for a solid week. The good news is that he finally had some time whilst he was locked up in his room to play some games that aren't Elden Ring.

On the Quest Log this week Joel talks a little bit about his progress with Elden Ring (and Kyran tries to keep his contributions to a minimum) as well as reliving his childhood with last year's Hot Wheels racing game, meanwhile Kyran finally gets a chance to talk about Triangle Strategy and the ultimate palette cleanser in the form of Kirby and the Forgotten Land.

Over in this week's Dope or Nope we have a lot of stuff to talk about, some of it recent and some of it a few weeks old but still relevant to what we talk about on this show. We made it through 2021! But before we put it to rest and look forward to all the great new games coming up in 2022 (we are in the month of Elden Ring!) it's time to take a final look back at the year that was.

Greetings listeners, we're back with another episode!

On this week's show we focus entirely on what we've been playing with a Quest Log only episode, which tracks given Kyran held everyone up in October to gush about Metroid (sorry not sorry).

Joel and Kyran have both reached credits on the incredibly simple and fun Unpacking from Witch Beam Games and discuss how much they enjoyed the experience, including the subtle but effective underlying narrative told exclusively through the gameplay's strengths. We also talk about our time with Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy where Kyran tries to convince Joel to pause what he's playing at the moment to get back into finishing it, it's almost certainly one of 2021's most surprising video games.

Lastly we have the two main games of the show, Joel has spent the last week getting his fix with Forza Horizon 5 and fills Kyran in on all the details from Playground's newest racer for fans of all skill levels, meanwhile Kyran waded into the Elden Ring closed network test over the weekend and spends almost too much time talking to Joel about everything he loved about the preview and how much he already misses it.

Metroid Dread is finally here! The long awaited fifth (and final) entry in the original Metroid story arc has officially released on the Nintendo Switch just last week. So we decided we'd strike while the iron was hot and sit down to dish on our early impressions on the newest Metroid title.

We do our best to avoid major spoilers beyond what was initially shown in the game's early E3 showing and a few of the trailers, but we fully intend to break it all down in a full spoilers episode at some point in the not too distant future so be sure to keep an eye out for that.

Sorry about the episode being a little late, this week has been another bumpy one in a long string of similarly bumpy ones as we continue to feel a bit fatigued by the endless barrage of stuff that 2021 continues to throw our way.

First up we've got a Quest Log where Kyran goes over his return to Destiny 2 with the recent launch of the Season of the Lost ahead of 2022's release of the new Witch Queen DLC, he has quickly been sucked back in by Bungie's incredibly fun shooting mechanics and the ever addicting act of making the numbers go up. Meanwhile, Joel has gone back in time to finish Psychonauts among all the excitement for the sequel and he fills Kyran in on his thoughts on the game, how it has aged, and how excited he is to play the sequel.

Elsewhere in the show we go through each game shown at the latest PlayStation showcase, billed as the show for the PlayStation 5. We talk about whether we thought it delivered and talk about the highs (like the insane talent over at Insomniac and how good the new God of War looks) to the lows (like that incredibly pointless GTA5 trailer). It doesn't make the console easier to get, but it does look like the future is looking good for PlayStation 5 owners as we move further into next generation becoming the current generation.

Dialogue Options Podcast Episode 184: The (Shaky) Ascent to Cyberpunk Heaven

It's been a bit of a weird couple of weeks, so we hope you'll bare with us for this week's episode.

First up we've got the Quest Log, where both Kyran and Joel have synced up on a couple of games that have come out fairly recently! We start with Pokémon Unite, a free to play Pokémon themed MOBA that dropped on the Switch, and are both quite surprised at how enjoyable of an experience it is for short bursts. Lastly, we have spent a little bit of time with The Ascent, a twin-stick shooter cyberpunk-themed co-operative game, after its recent release on Xbox Game Pass. We've got a bit to say about how much we are enjoying it and about how it really feels like the game needs a few more patches to really be a truly great experience.

Meanwhile, over in Dope or Nope we talk about the still unfolding debacle over at Activision Blizzard after the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing filed a lawsuit against Blizzard over sexual harassment, unequal pay and more. We try not to talk about it too much, as it has been developing over the last two weeks and largely where we stand is alongside many others that have touched on this. Taking a stand against this behaviour and calling it out when you notice it essential, accountability is so important and it sadly seems like this sort of behaviour isn't at all uncommon in the games industry. We also break down the recent Annapurna Interactive presentation and talk about how excited we are about the newly announced Dead Space remake.

We cap off the show with a short Bonus Round so that Kyran can remind everyone that this week Metroid will officially celebrate its 35th anniversary (on August 6th, specifically) and wants to bring some attention to it. There's no better time to jump in than now, which is why it is so disappointing that Nintendo is making it so difficult for this criminally underrated series to find new players. At the very least, Super Metroid is available on the Switch's SNES Online, but if you've got a Wii U still kicking around the nicest thing we can say about it is that it plays almost all of the currently available Metroid games.

Dialogue Options Podcast Episode 183: Steam Deck Does What Nintendon't

We also look at the reveal trailer for the newest Ubisoft Original Tom Clancy's XDefiant, talk about how many EA is going a bit too far about keeping everyone's expectations in check for the imminent EA Play this week, and get cautiously excited about Atlus preparing to celebrate the Persona series hitting its 25th anniversary starting from September of this year.

Sony has made some studio acquisitions, Konami and Bloober Team are working together on something horror related, BioWare confirm that they won't be at this year's EA Play (placing all expectations on the newly rumoured Dead Space remake), Ghost of Tsushima's Director's Cut is officially launching next month, and the Kojima/Xbox partnership appears to have reached a new milestone via a Jeff Grubb rumour. We're back after taking a week to process E3 and scroll through the lists of games that were announced or updated over the course of five or so very crazy days. Our E3 wrap is a little different this year, purely because of how condensed every presentation was and the lack of free time we actually had to break it all down (it'd be so many episodes) we decided instead to put together lists of the games that caught our attention as well as including some general discussion about how we felt the event worked this year.

I think we can all agree it was preferable to how spread out everything was last year, but it is also fair to say that maybe we don't really need the ESA and E3 side of things and instead just pivot towards a weekend in June to celebrate games. It'll be interesting to see what happens in 2022 if an in person E3 happens again.

On this episode's Quest Log Joel's been putting more time into both Monster Hunter Rise and continuing his efforts to reach the end of Nier Replicant. Meanwhile Kyran has serves up a fresh dose of thalassophobia with his early impressions of Unknown World's Subnautica Below Zero, a game which offers more ocean survival on a smaller scale with some nice quality of life improvements and a larger focus on narrative before closing out with the big one. Now that he's hit credits Kyran lets Joel know how he feels about Resident Evil Village, a game that has been talking itself up since it was announced. Did he like it? Did he hate it? It is also worth noting that there is are some Resident Evil Village spoilers from 0:43:38 and end around 0:54:46 and 0:56:04 to 0:56:51.

Then over in Dope or Nope we've got an assortment of things to talk about, including Disco Elysium no longer being banned in Australia (and available for sale right now), Sony apparently working on 25 new games for the PS5 (half of which are supposedly new IPs), Ubisoft looking to include more AAA free-to-play experiences in their release schedule, and Final Fantasy XIV's Fan Fest revealed a bunch of new info for the newest expansion.

Dialogue Options Podcast Episode 178: The Second Chance for Nier Replicant

On this week's episode we're cheating a little with our Quest Log and incorporating a couple of movies into what is typically our 'what we've been playing' segment. We've been down to the local cinemas to see the latest live action Mortal Kombat film and suffered through the Monster Hunter movie, we bring you our thoughts on both and let me just say one was definitely better than the other. Outside of that we've both been plugging away at the recently released Nier Replicant. This game is seen as something of a second chance for the game after it originally released on the PS3, hopefully we don't make any enemies with our early impressions!

Meanwhile, other in Dope or Nope we've got a variety of talking points. These range from a wild list of characters that Epic wants to include in Fortnite that has leaked out thanks to the absolutely crazy Apple v Epic court case going on right now to the shocking news that three veterans would be stepping down from Giant Bomb.

Dialogue Options Podcast Episode 177: Thirty Minutes in the Village

We're back with another episode and this time we're making good on something we've been meaning to get to, Joel has hit credits on Persona 5 Strikers. We take some time to talk about some broad thoughts about the game as a while as well as dedicating about 15 or so minutes to spoiler discussion.

Additionally, Joel spent a bit of time with the demo for Aerial_Knight's Never Yield, a new auto running game featured in the most recent Indie World that Nintendo held last week. Meanwhile, Kyran talks about his time with a single game of Resident Evil's newest weird multiplayer distraction, RE: Verse, and the highly anticipated Resident Evil Village demo. 30 minutes in the Village segment was enough to truly convince Kyran that this game is going to be brilliant as Resident Evil continues to stride forward (remember when we were all ready to write the series off after Resident Evil 6?)

Over in the Bonus Round Joel runs us through the list of presented in the most recent Indie World, which included some games we've seen a lot (like Cris Tales) and some genuine surprises (like a new game being published by Konami based on an old NES IP and a new Oxenfree game from Night School). It's probably the last we'll hear from Nintendo until E3 based on timelines, so we make sure to revel in it.

Lastly, we talk about how we've been finding Monster Hunter Rise since it's launch on Switch just over a week ago.

We talk about the weapons we're using, the monsters we like hunting, and how we're finding it after really breaking into the Monster Hunter series with World. Spoilers, we're having a good time turning our favourite beasts into shirts.

Sorry about the lack of episode last week! It was a decision we came to due to the lack of news and our own lack of new games having been played, but this week we invited Brendan back to help us bolster a Quest Log focused episode.

First up Joel gives us some more of his thoughts on Persona 5 Strikers whilst also managing to side track us with Persona discussion in general, Kyran weighs in on how he's finding Bravely Default 2 and why he thinks he might be putting it down for now, then Brendan informs us on what the heck Dyson Sphere Program is and reminds us to be excited for the upcoming System Shock remake after exploring the most recent demo.

Lastly, we finish up with Valheim, an early access crafting survival game with a Viking twist. It's a game that has stolen both Kyran and Brendan's hearts over the 20 or so hours they've put into it during the last week and a half. Joel's been curious about it, time to see if he'll be pushed over the edge.

A new year is upon us! Hopefully one that is kinder to all of us, especially after 2020 spent so much time kicking our collective butts. We decided the best way to welcome in the new year was by taking a look back at 2020's video games and doing our annual video game battle royale (which we actually missed last year, foolishly).

So we've assembled a list of 22 game that came out last year and we attempt to kill our way through the list, one by one, until only one victor is left standing at the end. We are also currently working on our Game of the Year lists, that episode should come later this month as we attempt to crunch on as many of the year's games as we physically can, plus we'll probably do a bumper Quest Log to cover all of the craziness we've played over the holidays.

Dialogue Options Podcast Episode 168: Cyberpunk Woes

First of all, sincere apologies for the delay! As mentioned in the episode, we had fully intended to record this last week but Kyran came down a little sick so we had to push back. We're back now though!

In our Quest Log we take a look at the highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 and our very early impressions about the game. We also use this opportunity to look at the disastrous launch of the game and just how astounding it is that CD Projekt Red keeps putting their foot in it each and every day. It is a game that we are enjoying, but it is impossible to deny it is far from the product that the trailers had promised.

Meanwhile, in our Bonus Round we resolve our annual Game Awards bet and unfortunately for Joel he finds himself defeated once again at the hands of Kyran by a single point, but what game will he have to play? He's definitely not going to enjoy it. Then we run down a list of announcements from the show, including the reveal of a new Perfect Dark, Sephiroth coming to Smash Bros, new teasers for Mass Effect and Dragon Age, and we scratch our heads over the strangest trailer of the night introducing an Ark 2 featuring Vin Diesel (plus many more!)

The plan is to put out a special episode next week where we'll run down our annual best game of 2020 Kill Your Babies special (our own Game of the Year stuff will come probably come late January).

Dialogue Options Podcast Episode 163: Locking S-Foils in Attack Position

We're back with another episode of the Dialogue Options Podcast and this time we've got a jam packed Quest Log episode! We sat down last week to record but realised not only had there not been a great deal of news we could cover on top of us not really having had the chance to play a great deal so we decided to take the week to just play some games.

The move paid off as we've got plenty to talk about this week! First up both of us have been spending some time with EA's newest Star Wars game, Squadrons, and we talk about how we're finding it. Joel's been playing in VR and Kyran has been reminded once again just how much he misses the Rogue Squadron games. Genshin Impact is a free-to-play gacha game with a world heavily inspired by Breath of the Wild and has been taking the world by storm, so we've also spent some time there.

Lastly on the individual fronts Joel chats about his time with Need for Speed: Payback and whether or not it manages to scratch that itch that he's had for a long time now over the lack of arcade styled racers to play. Meanwhile Kyran bit the bullet and jumped into the early access for Larian's hotly anticipated Baldur's Gate 3 and so far has been blown away by it (despite it featuring a few early access bugs)

Dialogue Options Podcast Episode 162: Going to Hades and Back

This week's episode was delayed by a week after our previous recording suffered from some classic Audacity meddling and our desire to try and avoid that weird feeling of déjà vu that comes from discussing the same topics again.

In our Quest Log we talk heavily about the full 1.0 release of Supergiant's Hades coming to Switch and PC as Joel welcomes Kyran into the roguelike fold. If you are a fan of the genre or enjoy a fun romp through some Greek Myth-draped hack and slash gameplay then it is absolutely should give this game a look. Kyran also briefly talks about his time with Super Mario 3D All-Stars and the conflict of enjoying the game whilst being fully aware Nintendo should absolutely have put more effort into making this something special.

Meanwhile over in the Bonus Round we play some more mini games of Dope or Nope with the latest Nintendo Direct Mini (featuring Monster Hunter Rise!!) and Sony's PlayStation 5 showcase which was so packed with things it is hard to summarise it, but it included glimpses at gameplay for Mile Morales and Demon's Souls. Closing out the show is a discussion about Microsoft's latest acquisition of ZeniMax to the tune of $10.4 billion (or $7.5 billion in US dollars) and what that means for the future of many Bethesda games.

Up first we have Nintendo's first Partner Showcase, a new initiative going forward where they'll show off select games from their development partners in smaller videos presumably for quicker turnarounds, but we have no idea when the next one will be. Then we've got a second Day of the Devs, featuring updates on some indie games we knew about with some cool new surprises (and SGF concerts both before and after). Lastly, Microsoft steps up to the plate to show off some of their first party offerings including the highly anticipated Halo Infinite.

We seem to be nearing the end of Summer Game Fest and we've also got a Quest Log focused episode coming up, along with ideas on episodes focusing solely on games like The Last of Us Part II, Necrobarista and maybe Ghost of Tsushima.

Greetings listeners! On this week's episode we take a look at some more Summer Game Fest presentations, notably we look at the Devolver Digital and Ubisoft Forward that took place over the weekend.

Devolver continue committing to their ridiculous lore and come up with a show that we found pretty entertaining, which helped to alleviate the fact that it was rather light on the game announcements. Easily the most impressive thing about Devolver's presentation was their decision to release the world's first ever "first person marketing experience" in the form of a free-to-play game on Steam called Devolverland, where players get to explore an abandoned convention centre and check out a variety of booths. Ubisoft also had a pretty small show, the big takeaways include deep dives and release dates for both Watch Dogs Legion and Assassin's Creed Valhalla, as well as the reveal for Far Cry 6 (pity it had already leaked days prior), in addition to some mobile announcements Joel also talks about his brief time checking out their new battle royale, Hyper Scape.

We're back with a new episode of the podcast where we are thankful for video games during these uncertain times, Joel gives a quick run down of a game called Roundguard which brings together his love of Peggle and roguelikes. Beyond the Quest Log we've got a weird Dope or Nope this week, updates on Troy Baker not reprising his role as Rhys in Borderlands 3, Shawn Layden has stepped down from his position at SIE with little to no explanation why, and very recently Blizzard has found themselves on hot water over a controversial decision to punish Hearthstone player, blitzchung, after his comments in a post-match interview, which also resulted in them deciding to terminate two seemingly innocent casters who were working the event. The tweet that alerted us to it can be found here, it's worth looking into this situation as Blizzard continues to gather more negative attention from the global gaming community. Hopefully there's a positive update before next week's show, but right now it is hard not to be disappointed in the company for this decision.

Playing With Super Power Episode 1 - Yoshi's Island

Greetings Listeners!

This week one of your hosts is over in the wonderful land of Japan, so we'll be debuting a special episode (the first of a new series we'll be chipping away at over the coming months). This series we'll see us tackling the SNES Classic Mini library of games and sitting down to discuss each title.

First up is Yoshi's Island, the sequel to the classic Super Mario World, which sees Yoshi embarking on a quest to keep Baby Mario safe as he tries to save Baby Luigi from the clutches of Baby Bowser and Kamek. The game itself is probably a favourite of ours so we hope you enjoy listening to us talking about it as it would go on to shape how Nintendo designed games starring Yoshi for years to come.
