<itunes:summary>
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng • At the end of the book the author leaves us, the readers, a letter and I think it captures the essence of the book well so instead of writing my own review, I’ll just paste some of the letter:
“Dear readers,
When I first began Little Fires Everywhere, I knew I wanted to write about my beloved hometown of Shaker Heights, Ohio. I started with a story about troubled families-the wealthy Richardsons and their complicated family dynamics, mysterious Mia and her daughter, and the secrets they all carry with them-and set the story in my hometown.
Shaker Heights, I realized, is full of fascinating contradictions. It's a wealthy, highly regulated city-one of the first planned communities in the United States-and the belief in planning is so strong that the city even planned for diversity in everything from the appearance of its houses to the racial makeup of its population. It was founded on utopian principles and even today brims with idealism and a sense of exceptionalism. And despite all this, of course, Shaker Heights still struggles with the same race and class issues as the rest of the nation.
Like many places in our country, Shaker Heights is full of idealistic, altruistic people— of all races— who are good at heart and sincerely want to do the right thing. Yet when personally affected by the issues, even idealists often end up making selfish choices with far-reaching effects. It's human nature, yet I wanted to explore how-and how often—we justify it to ourselves when we cross moral lines. Where do we follow the rules, and where do we justify breaking them? Do our pasts determine what we deserve in the future? And is it ever possible to leave your past behind?
These are some of the questions I hope the novel raises.” & that’s exactly what it did.

The Brilliant Life of Eudora Honeysett by Annie Lyons • We don't talk enough about how growing up during & post WWII impacts our society today. The book explores complex questions surrounding death and dying in old age. It raises a thought-provoking scenario: a woman who, at 85, contemplates assisted dying despite finally finding love and support.

Just like birth doulas are compassionate professionals who support pregnant people, death doulas support terminally ill patients in their final days. Their role emphasizes the value of open communication about death, reminding us that while death is inevitable, it can be faced with comfort and peace.

                <itunes:summary>
This book explores the grief of a younger sister, Julie, coming to terms with the sudden loss of her seemingly perfect older sister, Olga. While Olga embodied tradition, attending church and prioritizing family, Julie harbors dreams pursuing a more modern path. Torn between resentment for a sister she never fully understood, Julie embarks on a quest to uncover her sister’s suspected secrets. This journey not only sheds light on her sister's true self but also fosters healing within the fractured family, particularly between a grieving Julie and her mother.

                <itunes:summary>
Evil Eye by Etaf Rum • This book delves into the life of Yara, a first-generation Palestinian millennial grappling with her cultural heritage and personal struggles. The narrative unfolds through her introspective lens, revealing the complexities of navigating life as a child of immigrants.

Yara's family’s displacement from their homeland casts a long shadow, shaping her parents' decision to immigrate to the US in search of a better life. However, the weight of their displacement lingers, leaving Yara with a pervasive sense of not belonging. Yara grapples with reconciling her cultural identity with the realities of American culture.

Art, journaling, and a newfound friendship emerge as Yara's heals, offering solace and space for self-discovery. The book artfully showcases her internal conflict and the challenges she confronts in forging her own path.

Riley Sager effortlessly navigates the nuances of our generation, making the protagonist instantly relatable and at times insufferable. This skill becomes even more crucial in the face of the book's creepy atmosphere when the neighbor's drowning sets the stage for a chilling mystery – she's saved, then vanishes, leaving us unsettled as Casey, the main character, tries to get to the bottom of it. This is not your typical summer retreat; it's a masterclass in building suspense, where every ripple on the lake and creak of the floorboards becomes a potential clue.

As a first gen Latina, I felt so seen reading this book. Gigi’s mission is to equip people of the global majority with the tools and confidence to manage our finances, overcome debt, build lasting wealth, and achieve financial freedom. This book is unlike any other financial book out there because these types of books are often written with other audiences in mind. Drawing on her Mexican heritage and collectivist upbringing, Gigi highlights the importance of balancing our community and our personal financial future. Banned books expose you to a variety of perspectives and ideas that challenge societal norms, and often leave us with a sense of empowerment. As society advances, women gain the ability to stay informed, voice their opinions, and challenge conventions. It’s important that Chick Lit covers heavy topics like the ones mentioned in today’s book, including anti-war sentiments, consumerism, religion, imperialism, classism, humanity, and the industrial war complex. Although the overall tone leans toward a somber note, the mention of time-traveling aliens injects an intriguing element.

                <itunes:summary>
Mental health stigma is a societal problem that has a significant negative impact on people with mental health conditions. The stigma can lead to reduced hope, lower self-esteem, increased symptoms, difficulties at work, and a lower likelihood of maintaining treatment plans. It can also lead to discrimination in the workplace, housing, healthcare, and more. The stigma is often rooted in negative stereotypes about mental illness that are reinforced in our culture and media. <itunes:summary>
Alcohol is a harmful, addictive drug.

Society has a misconception of what it means to be alcoholic. Alcoholism is not about the amount of drinks you have per week, but about whether drinking negatively impacts your life and continuing to drink anyway.

Current recovery programs, such as AA, were created by white men in the 1930s and are not inclusive of women or people of the global majority.

The author proposes a "feminine centric recovery" framework that assumes you are already whole and perfect, and that the problem is with the system, not with you. This approach focuses on self-advocacy, mothering yourself, growing your own agency, growing a skill set, setting clear boundaries, embracing the world, cultivating a sense of power, and self-trust.

We should do away with the labels "alcoholic" and "alcoholism" because they assert that it is normal to consume an addictive substance with ease and abnormal to not be able to, and that they prevent all drinkers from observing their own relationship with alcohol. These terms shame people for life and that they absolve alcohol companies of their role in mass producing, marketing, and selling this dangerous drug.
