Denmark's Most Shocking Unsolved Murder

The San Francisco Witch Killers

On January 12, 1983, hitchhikers Michael Bear Carson and his wife Suzan murdered their driver, John Hellyar, in view of other motorists. After a high speed chase and their arrest, the couple would admit during a five hour press conference that they were on a mission from a higher power to kill witches. However, this strange true crime case of “The San Francisco Witch Killers” is not about one just one murder. The Serial Photographer | Killer William Bradford

Werewolf Of Bedburg

Carl Großmann: The Butcherin' Berlin Beggar

It shows a young man presenting a how-to about grave robbing. While the video is of low quality, what jumps out is that the skull the man holds throughout the video appears very real. However, no one has been able to confirm if the video is a hoax, the identify the young man, or where it originated.

The Murder Zone | Tales of the Cumminsville Ripper

Five women were found brutally murdered in the Cumminsville area of Cincinnati, Ohio, in the early 20th century. The serial killer was never caught, the murders remain unsolved, and no viable suspects were ever questioned, which is especially strange because multiple women survived the assailant's attacks. Murder At Greystone Mansion | A Beverly Hills Scandal

A Rerelease of a classic episode with Dearly Departed's Scott Michaels. Scandal rocked the small town of Beverly Hills, CA in 1929. At a massive mansion built by an oil tycoon's son, Ned Doheny, two men were shot and killed in an apparent murder-suicide. Almost 100 years later, no one can tell you exactly what happened that night because the case is full of rumors including a love affair, a coverup, and the inclusion of the political controversy of its time, the Teapot Dome scandal.

Today, the grounds of the home known as Greystone Mansion are open to the public, but few know the history of the murder-suicide that took place within those walls. Scott Michaels of Dearly Departed Tours joins the episode. Scott is the authority on the dark side of Hollywood. The Murder of Leota Camp REDUX

A summer re-release of a classic episode! On July 10th, 1967, 25 year old mother of three, Leota Camp, was found by her young children, stabbed and bleeding in a small bedroom of the family’s home in Des Moines, Iowa. There was no sign of a robbery, forced entry, or sexual assault. In short, there doesn't seem to be a motive, and the attack happened when family and neighbors were within earshot. The murder of Leota Camp still haunts her family and friends to this day and has become one of Iowa's most notorious cold cases.

The often covered, discussed, and scrutinized death of Charles Morgan. The story is too odd and mysterious to not record our own retelling of his story. In March 1977, escrow agent Charles C. Morgan went missing. Three days later he turns up in the middle of the night with plastic handcuffs on his wrists and ankles and unable to speak. Just weeks later, he turns up dead, shot in the back of the head with his own gun. There were no finger prints on the gun, and he hid a strange coded message on a two dollar bill in his underwear. And those are just two of the plethera of strange details about this "suicide". Unraveling the Mystery of the 1916 NJ Shark Attacks

The first recorded shark attacks in history were part of a group of deadly strikes that occured in New Jersey in 1916. Four deaths occured in a matter of 12 days, and the fallout included panic and a new fear of sharks. The events terrified the community and later inspired Peter Benchley to write JAWS.

The shark attacks were not just deadly but very strange. Groups of shark attacks like these are not known to happen, and to this day no one knows for certain what type of shark was involved, if it was one shark or more, of even if all the attacks were from sharks. Today on "A Study of Strange" we discuss the real events, the victims, and how the attacks in New Jersey in 1916 lead to our modern fears of the apex predator of the seas.

The Murder of Leota Camp

On July 10th, 1967, 25 year old mother of three, Leota Camp, was found by her young children, stabbed and bleeding in a small bedroom of the family’s home in Des Moines, Iowa. There was no sign of a robbery, forced entry, or sexual assault. In short, there doesn't seem to be a motive, and the attack happened when family and neighbors were within earshot. The murder of Leota Camp still haunts her family and friends to this day and has become one of Iowa's most notorious cold cases.

America’s First Serial Killers

Considered to be the first American serial killers, Micajah and Wiley Harpe were born in North Carolina in the mid to late 1700s and became notorious for their violent crimes in Kentucky and Tennessee. They are known for committing a series of brutal murders. We dive into the fascinating and dark history of the Harpe Brothers, exploring their lives, their crimes, and the rumors and legends that have grown up around them.

The Harpes proved to be an immensely hard subject to research and pinpoint exact details. Both because of the time the Harpes lived and because rumors and folklore, which can't be confirmed, dominate their story. But they were real and they were terrifying.

The fires caused damage to many homes and businesses and the residents had to evacuate by the next summer. Sir Victor Goddard’s Time Slip Incident

By the end of his life, Goddard was a decorated and respected military veteran (of two world wars), writer, speaker, and firm believer in the paranormal. Murder in Mandan with Brian James O’Connell

Feature film director Brian James O'Connell came across the case of a North Dakota man arrested for the brutal killing of four people in 2019, and became so intrigued that he traveled to North Dakota to attend part of the trial. On this episode of A Study Of Strange, Brian shares details of the bizarre case that shocked the city of Mandan, ND.

The alleged killer, Chad Isaak, professed during his trial that he was not the murderer, but all of the evidence pointed directly to Isaak. Evidence that includes security camera footage of a man with a distinct walk, just like Isaak's, the discovery of the murder weapons, blood on and in his truck, and more.

What makes this case even more strange is that there appears to be no motive. No connection with the killer to the victims.

Today we attempt to make sense of the senseless, and share recent news related to Chad Isaak.

What do spies have to do with a murder in a small New Hampshire town in 1918? Maybe nothing. Maybe everything. Today we conclude the story of the epically strange murder of Dr. William Dean with guests, actor Tara Perry ("The Fresh Beat Band", "12 Hour Shift", "Ghosts of the Ozarks"), and her husband, filmmaker Jordan Wayne Long ("Ghosts of the Ozarks").

During World War I, there were reports of strange lights in the mountains of Southern New Hampshire. Paranoia was at an all time high and people believed the strange lights were signals to and from German spies, possibly even communicating with U-boats off the Eastern coast of the US. The government was so concerned that they sent agents to investigate the signal lights, which never stopped during the course of the war.

Caught up in the midst of what seems like the plot of a spy novel, was a resident of Jaffrey, New Hampshire, Dr. William Dean. One quiet night in August of 1918, Dr. Dean ventured towards his barn to milk his cow, but he never made it back inside for his dinner. Dean was later found in six feet of water within his cistern, tied, covered in a bag, and strangled to death. Nothing was stolen. No apparent motive ever discovered. For over 100 years, the murder has transfixed the town and the best theory to date is that Dr. Dean saw something related to the strange lights in the mountains, and it got him killed.

The Bennington Triangle - With filmmaker Yuri Baranovsky (”The Summoned”)

Special guest Yuri Baranovsky, the writer/producer behind the horror film "The Summoned", joins the podcast to learn about the mysteries and folklore surrounding The Bennington Triangle. This Vermont location is the setting for at least five strange disappearances starting in 1945. No known connections exist between the victims except their location and strange details.

The Bennington Triangle was a name given to the area in 1992 by Vermont author Joseph A Citro. Most accounts briefly mention a history of odd things in Vermont from UFOs, to Bigfoot like cryptids, and curses, but there is never much detail about such legends. Today, on this episode on A Study Of Strange, we attempt to track down those stories and see if they could be connected to the missing persons of The Bennington Triangle.

The Murder of Biggie Smalls - With expert guest, filmmaker Michael Dorsey

The co-executive producer and showrunner of Ghost Adventures: House Calls, Michael Dorsey, has made a career out of documenting compelling stories for TV and film. Over the years he's become known for his expertise on the "unsolved" murder of Biggie Smalls having produced multiple projects about the case. On this episode of A Study of Strange, Dorsey shares his insight and opinion about who killed Biggie and why there have been no arrests.

On March 9th, 1997, in Los Angeles CA, superstar music artist Biggie Smalls, aka the Notorious B.I.G., was shot at an after party near the Peterson Automotive Museum. The assailant pulled up along side Biggie in a Chevrolet Impala and attacked. Biggie was rushed to the hospital but passed away shortly after arriving. He was only 24 years old.

This came just 6 months after rival rapper, Tupac Shakur, was also shot and killed. Many speculate the murders were connected.

No suspect has ever been arrested for Biggie’s murder despite the fact that many consider the case solved. Therein lies where the case takes a strange turn. The murder of Biggie Smalls is shrouded in conspiracy theories and rumors. Rumors of gang violence, business rivalries, police corruption, and vengeance. The truth may lie somewhere in the middle.

Our special guest for this two parter mystery is Timothy Donahue, a filmmaker and former co-host of the tv series “Auto/Biography” along with A Study Strange’s host Michael May. Tim wears his skeptic hat as Michael introduces him to the story of William H. Mumler, the father of spirit photography and a likely conman. It was in New York City in 1869 when William Mumler was accused of fraud. Mumler was a medium who would take portraits of people, and on their photographs would magically appear ghosts. The practice became known as Spirit Photography. While we might look at Mumler’s photographs with a modern eye and clearly see double exposure as a method to create the spirits, no one could figure out how Mumler was pulling off his deceit.

Mumler’s case is connected directly to our cultural beliefs and distrust of the media today. And, we still don’t know how he did it.
