While most of the diverted passengers landed in Gander, The Town of Stephenville was also very instrumental that day, 13 aircraft landed at Stephenville Airport. The town held a 9/11 service in the community on Friday, honouring the heroes and victims. Former Stephenville Mayor Tom Rose was an Air Traffic Controller at the time. Friday Septemeber 11 was the 25th Anniversary of 9/11 when Gander and other communities in the province welcomed nearly 7000 stranded airline passengers and crew after U.S. airspace closed during the terrorist attacks. One of those communities is the Central Newfoundland town of Appleton. The town held a special service to commemorate the 25 th Anniversary of the events of 9/11 at the Derm Flynn Riverfront Peace Park which displays a piece of steel from the twin towers.Bay Fm's Dean Clarke caught up with Derm Flynn by phone who reflected on that tragic day a quarter of a century ago.

Cancer Care Foundation NL brings their Polka Dot Trot to Corner Brook

The Cancer Care Foundation NL is bringing their annual Polka Dot Trot to Corner Brook this year and registration is open. This 5-kilometre, all-abilities walk connects people of all ages to honour loved ones, support cancer patients, and celebrate survivors. Development Officer Laura Ivany says it’s the perfect name for this event which is into its tenth year. Participants wear 23 different colored t-shirts representing the different types of cancer.Ivany says one in two people in Newfoundland and Labrador are expected to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. She says all money raised through the Polka Dot Trot stays right here in our province and participants are encouraged to register now at polkadottrot.org. 48th Stephenville Theatre Festival kicks off this weekend with the Jazz Apostles

It started in 1979 and today, the Stephenville Theatre festival is the longest running theatre company in the province. Artistic Director Laura Caswell says with the 50th anniversary coming, they started a special project on the history of the festival. This year’s festival season starts this weekend with a pre-launch of the Jazz Apostles on Saturday at the Stephenville Arts and Culture Centre. The headline show for the season is “Shrek the Musical.” Caswell says Shrek is not just for kids and this is a musical with a pop vibe and lots of comedy. She dropped by Bay Fm.

Retired RCMP officer starts his "Bucket List Journey" today at age 86 with a drive across Canada

Chuck Gouett started a career with the RCMP in 1959 and today, he is starting what he calls his “Bucket List Journey.” The soon-to-be 87 year old is driving from St. John’s to B.C with the intention of visiting his retired colleagues across Canada. The trip is expected to take 7 weeks and covers about 17,000 kms. Gouett says it’s something he’s always wanted to do and he’s doing it because he can. He is originally from Sioux Saint Marie and says when he left there in 1958 there was no Trans Canada Highway in the area. Just north of there is the halfway point of his journey and Gouett says the highlight will be seeing the route across the top of Lake Superior. This so-called senior keeps active and involved, something he advises everyone to do. Down from 250lbs to 201bs, Gouett says his daughter in law is a physical trainer and has him on a program. Gouett spent some time meeting with the Assistant Commissioner and touring RCMP headquarters in White Hills yesterday. He says his start with the force was at a crude time with limited resources with no bubble tops on cars but there is a greater sophistication with the force now.
