Well hey, it's the FINAL episode of this wonderful season! Thank you so much for tuning in and sending over kind sports-centric words/thoughts/reviews. We love ya, and it's been a blast! AND for this final week...Larry and Christian sit down with longtime friend, sporty storyteller, and hardcore PickleBall enthusiast, Katina Dutton, to dig into stories of the sports/games/activities we take on as we get a bit long in the tooth (as the olds say). We talk stories all about making the transition from competitive team and individual sports to fitness, rec, and (dare we say...) "lifetime" sports - what that means, how that feels, what to do with an aging bod that still wants to go go go! Among other things we talk tai chi, golf, bocci, backpacking, shuffleboard, swimming,water aerobics, cornhole, weightlifting, pingpong, Sport Courts, solo hoop shooting, recovery time, bad backs/arms/knees/hips. AND most definitely we get into the merits and nuances of the aforementioned and suddenly ubiquitous sport of PickleBall.

Skateboarding Tales: Dropping In; Board-Bound Runaways; SoCal Days at the Concrete Wave

We dig into stories of meeting a dude at a bar who claimed he poisoned Michael Jordan in Park City, UT, the night before his legendary "Flu Game" vs. The Jazz; a litany of getting going all-in with a whole host of sports superstars in a lifetime of loving sports; and reporting about, dealing with, and trying (to little avail) to make good with a number of WAY over-the-top and pretty messed[up Ohio State football fans.

It's August. It's hot. The days are both long and short as summer '22 plays out its final act. And...we were feeling a bit nostalgic this week as well as gearing up to head to various theme parks, National Parks, city parks, and dog parks ourselves. SO, we've rebooted one of our favorite episodes from '21's Stories of Summer season - The Theme Parks of Summer. Thusly, we ask you to grab a cold drink, take in the smell of drooping late-summer flowers and the hot pavement seeping sulfur and oil, feel the warm wind rise across your face, and step through these theme park gates once again to take in some stories for a time.

'21 Show Notes: This week we take a ride through some epic Theme Park stories and experiences of the Magic Kingdom, love and loss, fathers and sons, girls, travel writing, growing up in SoCal, and the lasting impact of being a Disneyland Jungle Cruise Captain. Larry and Christian talk theme park memories to start things off, then Larry goes on a Disneyland deep dive with Capt. Mike Sigalas. To round out this week's episode Larry brings us our Correspondent piece, a story all about a girl, a father, a date, and an unforgettable theme park memory. Be safe, smart, and well out there. Joe spins a tale of Warped Tour and hangin' with Yelawolf without knowing it was Yelawolf he was hangin' with. Then Sam brings us a drug-addled yarn of stalking the elusive Guy Fieri through the streets of Chicago. As well, we bring you all some gorgeous and badass poetry from one of our fav annual Storyfort traditions, Poetry & Mimosa Sunday at The Owyhee Plaza! Enjoy.

John Roderick, Rock N' Roll Renaissance Man

This week Christian and Larry sit down with legendary Seattle musician and internationally known podcaster, John Roderick. Over the years John has carved out a life in the arts, music, and culture. Roderick fronted The Western State Hurricanes and The Long Winters, as well as had stints playing in Harvey Danger, with Jonathan Coulton, and a handful of other bands. Along the way he's also carved out a remarkable career as a podcast cohost of Omnibus with Ken Jennings, Roderick on the Line with Merlin Mann, and others. He's run for Seattle City Council, is a founding member of the Seattle Music Commission, and was named King Neptune at Seattle's Seafair festival in 2017. Needless to say, there was plenty to talk about! Enjoy!

An American Summer Classic: The Family Vacation

Anthony Doerr, Cloud Cuckoo Land, and The Unexpected Summer Read

Anthony gets into his soon to be released novel, Cloud Cuckoo Land, where the title came from, the intricacies of process and scope he embraced as he wrote this 600-page beauty, and his thoughts, as a writer and reader, on what makes a summer read a summer read.

Independence Day - Remembering the Mayhem, and Counting Flags

This week Larry and Christian get into a particularly memorable July 4th weekend that took place on San Juan Island in 1989. A dozen friends, all dudes. Far too much beer. Plenty of laughter, injuries, fuzzy antics, and stories that have lived on as pieces of the puzzle that was our lives back in our early twenties. We get into how we all remember and tell the story of that weekend from a unique vantage, and how memory has and continues to shape that years-gone narrative as time has marched on.

We managed to wrangle one old friend from that lost weekend to come on as our guest. Eirik Olsen joins us to tell and talk about how he adds up that Independence Day weekend in 1989.

Then, the amazing Kevin Smokler delivers our correspondent piece all about his family's tradition of counting flags every July 4th.

Here's what it's all about:Turning Pages is a collaborative effort featuring twelve local Boise BIPoC leaders, reading and discussing children’s books that hold deep meaning and importance to them. Each ten-minute episode includes the reader’s introduction of their personal journey, examples of overcoming barriers, celebrating who they are, and how each selected book has enriched, inspired, and encouraged them. Turning Pages was created to center BIPoC voices and role models, while elevating the importance of reading and literacy. Each episode seeks to engage K-6th grade learners, teachers, and parents in discussion and awareness of the diversity of experience and expertise found in our community.

Bios of our guests – Tai Simpson is “The Storyteller” in the indigenous language of the Nimiipuu nation (Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho). Her insight into politics and social justice work are heard regularly within public and private organizations. She is a direct descendant of Chief Redheart of the Nez Perce tribe and a tireless advocate for social justice. Tai’s academic background is in Sociology and Political Philosophy & Public Law at Boise State University. In the community, she serves as an organizer for the Indigenous Idaho Alliance and works as Social Change Advocate with the Idaho Coalition Against Sexual & Domestic Violence. Tai believes indigenous “old ways” need to come back in style. The old ways are principles on which many indigenous communities build their social and political narratives. As an antiracism activist and community leader, she uses contemporary and traditional Indigenous storytelling to depict the lens of “old ways” and how it is used to protect the sacred, build strength in the community, and keep nature in balance. Gabrielle Davis (she/her) is a respiratory therapist and counselor in Idaho. Outside of the health/ mental health care field, Gabby is an adjunct professor at a local university and is the facilitator for Youth Alliance for Diversity, a LGBTQIA+ youth group in Boise where she gets to be constantly reminded why kids are better than adults. In her free time, Gabby enjoys reminding people that Black, Queer and Trans Lives are included when saying ‘Black Lives Matter’, dispelling myths about the definition of allyship, encouraging folks to say I don’t know instead of pretending to know and bringing awareness to the fact that nicotine is one of the most addictive substances. Gabrielle lives in Boise with her wife and enjoys being a professional troublemaker whenever her time allows.

Nisha Jae Newton is a community organizer and graduate student in Social Justice & Human Rights. Amongst their lived experience as a Black femme and a queer/trans person in rural communities, they leverage their identities as a historian and sociologist to co-create an emergent world. Nisha has centered their activism and liberation work around youth—particularly within pedagogy and education. Nisha has started policy reform at Boise State University to integrate integrity and inclusion into the campus structure. Nisha has also worked to expand youth programming with the Idaho Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence and to fight for their trans siblings with American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Idaho in the 2020 legislative session. Nisha’s pronouns are they/them/their.

Oluwabukola (Bukky) Ogunrinola derives all her strength from her family and community. Coming to the United States as a first-generation Nigerian immigrant, Bukky has seen first-hand the effects of policy that is made intentionally to disrupt the livelihoods of families who have no safety net. Her identities and experiences inspired her journey into scholarship, as well as rooting the activism she takes part in through research, education, and community. Since 2014, Bukky has been a Youth Organizer at the Idaho Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence. This past year, she worked for Advocates for Youth, based in Washington, D.C. as a member of their International Youth Council which focuses on access to comprehensive and inclusive sexual education both domestically and internationally. She is entering her third year at Howard University, studying Economics and Mathematics with the hope of entering law school.

True Crime and Bloody Fiction Live From the Idaho Botanical Garden

In the spirit of Halloween (and 2020) this week we partnered with the Old Idaho Pen and the Idaho Botanical Garden to bring you a live recording of some genuinely creepy, haunting, scary stories performed last weekend at the IBG. From just outside the walls of the Old Idaho Penitentiary historians Anthony Parry and Amber Beirle, and fiction writer Julia McCoy bring us true crime, prison narratives, lost souls and a kettle of vultures. Suffice it to say, very few make it out alive. Enjoy!

Tai believes indigenous “old ways” need to come back in style. The old ways are principles on which many indigenous communities build their social and political narratives. As an antiracism activist and community leader, she uses contemporary and traditional Indigenous storytelling to depict the lens of “old ways” and how it is used to protect the sacred, build strength in the community, and keep nature in balance.

Gabrielle Davis (she/her) is a respiratory therapist and counselor in Idaho. Outside of the health/ mental health care field, Gabby is an adjunct professor at a local university and is the facilitator for Youth Alliance for Diversity, a LGBTQIA+ youth group in Boise where she gets to be constantly reminded why kids are better than adults. In her free time, Gabby enjoys reminding people that Black, Queer and Trans Lives are included when saying 'Black Lives Matter', dispelling myths about the definition of allyship, encouraging folks to say I don't know instead of pretending to know and bringing awareness to the fact that nicotine is one of the most addictive substances. Gabrielle lives in Boise with her wife and enjoys being a professional troublemaker whenever her time allows.

Nisha has started policy reform at Boise State University to integrate integrity and inclusion into the campus structure. Nisha has also worked to expand youth programming with the Idaho Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence and to fight for their trans siblings with American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Idaho in the 2020 legislative session.

Our Nonprofit Partners - Support and Outreach During the Crisis

This week as we remain in social-distancing and stay-at-home mode we wanted to touch base with a number of the amazing nonprofit organizations Storyfort and Treefort collaborate with. Amidst the lockdown and current state of the world our nonprofit friends have all had to pivot and rework their programming and outreach. So our team hopped on Zoom to check-in and see what's new.

As well, and just as importantly, we wanted to give a further voice to nonprofits as the fundraising campaign Idaho Gives is reaching its peak. Idahogives.org generates hundreds of thousands of dollars for nonprofits in Idaho each year and in this episode we get a chance to talk with five organizations among the hundreds that Idaho Gives helps support. The Idaho Gives campaign ends on May 7, 2020.

We talked with the Idaho Botanical Gardens, Lee Pesky Learning Center, Idaho Coservation League, Immigrant Justice Idaho, and Radio Boise. But, Storyfort and Treefort work with SO many other important nonprofits, The Cabin, Big Tree Arts, Treasure Valley Reads, Idaho Museum of International Diaspora, and Idaho Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Voilence, just to mention a few.
