In today’s lesson from Paul’s bold prayer for the Colossians, we see that one of the most important bold and audacious prayers we can pray is “use me”.

We live in a world that talks about Christian faith like there are “levels”. Believing there is a God is the base level. Going to church regularly (not just when you feel like it) is a level up. Reading your Bible daily is another level up. Giving money to a church is another level up. And so it goes on. In this message we look at the way Jesus and the early church talked about commitment to God and discover an “all or nothing” faith where “fully devoted” is the only real option.

3. In this series, we’re encouraging people to actually experience these powerful prayers. Today, grab a blank sheet of paper and a pen and find a place where you can sit quietly for 5 minutes. Write down whatever comes to you as something for repentance and forgiveness. Remember, this isn’t just about obvious crimes or big sins, repentance is also about turning away from things like greed, anger and selfishness and turning toward God and the love and grace he wants for us. Pray “God forgive me” and then destroy that piece of paper (literally burn it or shred it or whatever) as a symbol of God’s forgiveness and ‘new life’.

Millions of people are living without enough food to eat. It’s a global tragedy. This week we explore a hunger crisis that’s even worse: “a famine of hearing the words of the Lord”. So many people are starving spiritually – desperate to find spiritual food that will truly satisfy them. When Jesus says “I am the bread of life”, he’s making a bold claim about the solution to the hunger crisis. And when Paul writes to the church that “we are the body of Christ”, he puts followers of Jesus right in the middle of Jesus’ mission to bring life-giving “bread” to a world that is desperate for it.

When you think about who Jesus is and who his first followers thought he was, there’s one idea or theme that stands head and shoulders above all others: they thought Jesus was the “Messiah”. “Messiah” isn’t a word or idea that most of us think about in the 21^stcentury and it would be easy to ignore “Messiah” and read something else. But if Jesus said it was a big deal and if his biographers (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) all say it’s the main reason they wrote Jesus’ biography in the first place, then maybe we should learn a bit more about what “Messiah” means for us.

Many of us dream of bring rich or famous or super-talented. We want to build inspiring careers and great families. The truth of course is that many of us feel pretty ordinary. Paul has good news for those of us who feel that way. Paul says that every Christian has something valuable inside us: he says it’s like we have treasure inside us, and that treasure is the glory of God.

1. Does your life feel like a silver bowl or more like a clay pot (or something else)?

2. How do you feel when you read Paul saying that “the glory of God” lives inside you?

3. How would you live if you lived like the glory of God lived in you?

Let’s get naked!

Many of us live behind masks – carefully managing how the world sees us, and secretly afraid that people might see the real us behind the mask. This isn’t a new thing, in fact we see the roots of this behaviour all the way back in the opening pages of the Bible story. But Jesus life and death opened a new way for us to relate to God (and ultimately to others). Jesus died so that we can be open, authentic and intimate with God … so what are you waiting for … let’s get naked!

1. We all wear masks: what masks are you tempted to wear and why?

2. How do you feel when you hear that Jesus has made a way for you to approach God openly and honestly, without any kind of mask?

Jesus did lots of things that amazed others, but only twice do we find Jesus “amazed’ … and both times he is amazed at the faith he sees in others. Today we look at these two stories where Jesus is amazed and ask ourselves: what does our level of faith look like? Is it rational and safe … or bold and courageous?

1. What words or ideas first come to mind when you hear the word “faith”?

2. On a scale from 1 (rational and safe) to 10 (bold and courageous) where would you rate your own faith right now?

3. What would you have to do differently to increase this number?
