The Little Mermaid has been a Disney classic for decades, and in the age of live action remakes this was one that was inevitable. However, Halle Bailey's casting was sadly surrounded in controversy. But this movie has it all for Disney's live action age - new "real" CGI, new songs, song remakes, new actors, and giant budget.

So, the question is - is it worth the watch?

Makoto Shinkai is a director whose work I have come to love. It is hard to explain the excitement a new release from him brings me. But I was nervous after my disappointment with Weathering With you I didn't want to be let down again. So I went in with caution, and that caution was quickly forgotten as I was amazed by this film.

Suzume is a real depiction of our collective emotional vulnerabilities even if we don't want to admit it. We are feeling the changes of the world and want to preserve all that is good. Suzume tackles those feeling with it's amazing characters and story, with beautiful animation and an incredibly talented voice cast.

In short - I loved it.

I love stop motion, and I was expecting this to be the winner of Animation Hall of Fav, but now I'm not so sure. This has been my most anticipated film of the first part of the year. Creed blew me away and I couldn't wait to see what Michael B. Jordan would do with it as a first-time director. I have been looking forward to this "binge" for a long time. I loved the first Creed and Creed 3 has been one of my most anticipated films of the year. To say I was excited to finally see Creed 2 would be to understate it. But as I revisited the first film and was reminded of its greatness, doubt began to creep in. I wasn't sure if they would be able to repeat something so great, especially without Ryan Coogler. Suddenly rating percentages and star averages started to make me question the potential.

It finally came to watch Creed 2, just in time to catch my show time for Creed 3. And while I'm fighting to hold my tongue about Creed 3, I am happy to be talking about Creed 2.

The Transformers, and important part of my childhood and falling in love with movies in many ways. When I was in film school, I felt my appreciation for Transformers and Michael Bay's filmmaking was invalid, as it was lacking in "artistic substance". That was how the Basement Binge started. So I am stoked to finally be binging Transformers.

Lupin III, you either know who that is and why this is a fun film, or you have no idea. Kind of like the Japanese James Bond, since his inception by Monkey Punch in 1967 by Monkey Punch, Lupin III has had a world of adventures in all his animated adaptations. But never in 3DCG. Lupin III: The First as it is appropriately named is his first adventure in new animation, and it's wicked good.

Belle has completely rocked my world. I almost missed the film not knowing about it at all. But once I walked out of the theater I knew this needed to be a part of 'Animation Hall of Fav.' Films like this only come around so often and I'm so glad I didn't miss it. It's one you definitely shouldn't miss either - let me tell you why.

Kung Fu Panda, I was not expecting to have this much to say. But when a film is this visually stunning and thematically rich there is a lot worth mentioning. It's funny, has a great voice cast, is stuffed with saturated sunsets, and tells a heartfelt story - Kung Fu Panda, in the words of Po "IS AWESOME!"

Interstella 5555:The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem - the first film of 2022 and the start of "Animation Hall of FAV #2" or Animation Season 2.

I can not think of a better way to start this year. The animated House Musical for Daft Punk's second album Discovery and created in collaboration with legendary Animation Director/Writer Leiji Matsumoto. A beautiful combination of music, story and animation to craft a film unlike anything else and full of love for the format of animation.

It's basically a Sci-Fi Daft Punk Anime.

Let me tell you all the reasons this is a bad idea

- Furious 7 is the perfect ending

- Nothing (not even a cute Vin Deisel Baby) can replay Brian O'Conner

- This is supposed to be about family, nothing in this movie is really about family

- 6 and 7 were already way too over the top - here it is much worse

And it is all really a shame because F. Gary Gray would have made a fantastic Fast movie with a better script. Just look at his Italian Job remake. 

So give it a listen for a good time as we roast this thing.

For years I have been seeing that dumb ad on IMDb claiming that Chaos Walking was "unreleasable" just to get a great trailer and a release date in March 2021 during a global Pandemic. My love for Daisy Ridley was something that made me want this project to finally happen. Then to learn Doug Liman was directing, I was genuinely excited. He may not be the best working director, but he has skills for fun popcorn flicks with great action and awesome world-building. Add the always great Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland and it seemed pretty good. Like I said I really liked that trailer. So this past weekend, my wife and I got our tickets and a full popcorn bucket and saw Chaos walking. 

Here are my thoughts completely spoiler-free, if this is something you are deciding to see or not. If you have seen it and want to hear more, I do get into a bit of spoiler talk in the last few segments. 

In the not-too-distant future, Todd Hewitt (Tom Holland) discovers Viola (Daisy Ridley), a mysterious girl who crash lands on his planet, where all the women have disappeared and the men are afflicted by "the Noise" - a force that puts all their thoughts on display. In this dangerous landscape, Viola's life is threatened - and as Todd vows to protect her, he will have to discover his own inner power and unlock the planet's dark secrets. From the director of The Bourne Identity and Edge of Tomorrow and based on the best-selling novel The Knife of Never Letting Go, Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland star with Mads Mikkelsen, Demián Bichir, Cynthia Erivo, Nick Jonas, Kurt Sutter, and David Oyelowo in Chaos Walking.

With this recent fix I have had on watching these animated films that have been on my watchlist for far too long, Kubo finally earned its turn. I am so glad that it did, and that I decided to watch it for The Basement Binge. It is already one of my new favorites and is just about perfect for the segments of the Basement Binge. So lets FALL IN.

The time finally came, and after watching, I realized that as much as I loved it I wasn't really sure what to think. Some acclimation was definitely needed. (Since recording I have rewatched it and for sure love it). 

Here is my review of Fantastic Mr. Fox

This is the story of Mr. Fox (George Clooney) and his wild-ways of hen heckling, turkey taking, and cider sipping, nocturnal, instinctive adventures. He has to put his wild days behind him and do what fathers do best: be responsible. He is too rebellious. He is too wild. He is going to try "just one more raid" on the three nastiest, meanest farmers that are Walter Boggis (Robin Hurlstone), Nathan Bunce (Hugo Guinness), and Franklin Bean (Sir Michael Gambon). It is a tale of crossing the line of family responsibilities and midnight adventure and the friendships and awakenings of this country life that is inhabited by Fantastic Mr. Fox and his friends. 

Written and Directed by the great Wes Anderson, this wacky animated classic is great for everyone in the whole family, and not just in the dumb kids' movie tagline kind of way. It has is beautiful to look at, with an amazing cast, hilarious deadpan jokes, and a very important message.

January has flown by and February already seems to be moving even faster. But 2021 is looking out to be a slightly improved 2020. At least in the world of film releases. Warner Brothers may have figured something out with this new HBO Max and theater release, doing well at the Box Office (in Covid terms) and with HBO subscribers. The rest of the studios are still figuring it out as we get a repeat of last year with way too many film release dates delayed (again). 

But hey! Disney+ has some great things coming through the pipeline!

December was a very interesting month, with a very strange end to the year. Either way, SO LONG 2020. Completing another trip around the sun doesn't immediately change everything, but I am excited for the symbol of new opportunities the new year brings. 

We have some updated news about Legendary and Warner Brothers working out a deal for Godzilla vs Kong and Dune.

Warner Brothers announced that for the entire year of 2021 they would release their films day-and-date in theaters and on HBO Max at no additional cost to subscribers.

Kong: The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It; In the Heights; Space Jam: A New Legacy; The Suicide Squad; Dune; King Richard; The Matrix 4; Mortal Kombat; Malignant; Those Who Wish Me Dead; Cry Macho

After Spirited Away blew everyone away there were a lot of English actors ready to be a part of the next amazing piece from Miyazaki. Namely Christian Bale. Also packed in this ensemble cast is Emily Mortimer, Jean Simmons, Lauren Bell (who wanted to mary Miyazaki), and Billy Crystal. 

Based on the book by Diana Wynne Jones of the same title released in 1986, Howl's Moving Castle is the story of an unconfident young woman who is cursed with an old body by a spiteful witch, her only chance of breaking the spell lies with a self-indulgent yet insecure young wizard and his companions in his legged, walking castle.

Like the author said herself, it is a touching story about how "if you love someone enough all sorts of extraordinary other things happen in your surrounds as well, and you can achieve great things even if the world falls to pieces around you."

SO WHAT EVEN HAPPENED THIS MONTH? AND DO WE HAVE ANYTHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO?

The bad news first. Sadly we lost the great Sean Connery at the age of 90, probably most famous for his role as the first on-screen James Bond. Some other sad news about the loved Jeff Bridges and his new battle against lymphoma. Lastly, for this sad news - Wonder Woman 1984 currently set for a December 25th release date this year might just be moved again. 

So onto some more positives (maybe just to distract us). We got the Mandalorian Season 2 on Disney+ and a few new film announcements:

- Soul moving to Disney+ this December

- Raya and the Last Dragon trailer with a March 2021 release date announced

- LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special also coming to Disney+ November 17

- Also to Disney+ Marvel 616 all episodes streaming November 20th

Unrelated to Disney+ we got a super exciting trailer and release date for the new "Monster Hunter" movie with husband & wife team Paul W.S. Anderson and Milla Jovovich. A videogame series I have loved for years I can't wait to finally see this grace the big screen. Hoping the December release date can stick.

Marvel Studios finding some ways to work on upcoming films with Christian Bale and Natalie Portman arriving in Australia to film. The Doctor Strange 2 crew arriving in London. Most excitingly Oscar Issac was cast as Marc Spector for the new Moon Knight series. 

TENET is finally getting an at-home release, this year December 15th.

Also sadly discussing some great trailers that got me excited for 2020 before it turned into a dumpster fire for us all.

A while back I saw my first ever Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki movie: Princess Mononoke. It absolutely blew me away! I was in a trance for days and couldn't wait to experience more. So the next time I was at Best Buy I bought Spirited Away blind. Just because of all the amazing things I had heard about his specific film. I had specifically been saving it for episode 50. It was so glad it was finally here!

I'm not really sure what my expectations were but after the credits finished, I wasn't very impressed. Besides the beautiful animation, I didn't have many positive things to say. Because I was still processing, but as I gave myself time to think, the more I realized the power in this story. Hayao Miyazaki is a master artist and I am very grateful for the impact this film has had on me over the last few days/weeks! Let me tell you all about it!

I recently heard for the first time ever, the phrase - "Lightning in a Bottle" - which I was instantly tantalized by! But if there was ever a perfect idea to express the greatness of the John Krasinksi Horror film A QUIET PLACE, it would be "Lightning in a Bottle". I am a total wimp when it comes to all things horror, but a film this good (and some motivation from my wife) can always get me to eventually press play!

A horror film made on a budget of just $13 million, no less by a first time director, most famous for his role in The Office. HOW DOES THAT FILM EXCELL THIS WELL!? Like the Abbot's themselves, the result of amazingly talented people working together. Let me tell you all about it!

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is my second every Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli film. After having my world rocked by Princess Mononoke, I couldn't wait to experience such artistic animation again. Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy + Oblivion) has been a long time favorite Director of mine, so it was finally to visit his "based on a true story" film about the Granite Mountain Hotshots. On top of being a very moving and emotional film stacked with an amazing cast, it is also further proof of Kosinski's incredible talent! 

Only The Brave is a 2017 film Directed by Joseph Kosinski, written by Ken Nolan and Eric Warren Singer. Staring an A-List cast including Josh Brolin, Miles Teller, Jeff Bridges, Jennifer Connelly, and James Badge Dale.

"Based on the true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, a group of elite firefighters who risk everything to protect a town from a historic wildfire."

 After being let down by Mulan (2020) I was really in the mood for a great Wuxia film. Shadow has been sitting on my shelf for far too long and it was finally time! What a great surprise this was! A beautiful and stylized masterpiece. This looks like nothing else! It may follow some typical beats of wuxia, but it adds B L A D E U M B R E L L A S what more is there to say!? What a treat this was!

What a great way to come back to the cinema? And back into the podcast!!

Sorry for the long intermission. But The Basement Binge is back with a spoiler-free review of Christopher Nolan's new film TENET. 

TENET what an experience this was! Christopher Nolan set out to remake the experience of seeing a Bond film for the first time. This film does not disappoint. Filled with great work from John David Washington as The Protagonist, Robert Pattinson as Neil, and Elizabeth Debicki as Kat. A pounding score by Ludwig Goransson. Beautiful visuals by Hoyte van Hoytema and the whole production team! 

TENET was a great time in the theater (despite missing most of the dialogue) but coming how was a bit of a mess with the two opposing responses. So after a bit of time if finally planted myself firmly in my own subjective opinion.

Bumble the transformers reboot/sequel of 2018 was a hit that came out of nowhere and has become a hit to re-visit. Matt and I sit down together (virtually) to go over our love for this movie. 

But before we could do any of that I took the opportunity to pick at Matt's brain about his love and excitement for movies. It was a fun conversation to share our love for movies! - Matt, thank you again -

But then we got on to Bumblebee. A film that shocked us all, staring: Hailee Steinfeld, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., and John Cena. Directed by Travis Knight. This was a Transformers movie that came out of nowhere and charmed us all. So much love, so much to love.
