In this episode of Beyond the Decks, Robert connects with Marc Aterman, also known as Comfort Zone (CA), a Toronto-based drum and bass producer and DJ whose journey through electronic music reflects the evolution of digital music culture. From discovering music through early file-sharing platforms to Co-Founding Lazy Records, an algorithm-free music discovery app, Marc's story showcases the intersection of technology, creativity, and musical innovation.

Marc's path is marked by his transition from a teenage music enthusiast downloading tracks on Kazaa and LimeWire to becoming an established figure in the drum and bass scene. His experiences learning to DJ, producing and collaborating with respected labels, combined with his concerns about algorithm-driven music discovery, led him to create Lazy Records, a platform that aims to return serendipity to music exploration.

This conversation dives into the impact of technology on music creation, discovery, the role of nostalgia in contemporary electronic music, and the challenges of maintaining authenticity in an increasingly algorithmic music landscape.

In this episode we cover:

Personal experiences with industry networking and collaboration, including work with Tim Reaper

Marc's journey from death metal to electronic music through file-sharing platforms

The self-taught process of learning to DJ and progression to music production

The relationship between DJing, music production, and creative problem-solving

The influence of nostalgia and technology on contemporary music creation

Cofounding the newest growing music discovery platform Lazy Records app

The impact of algorithmic platforms on music discovery and listener experiences

Challenges of networking and collaboration in the electronic music scene

The importance of authentic music discovery in the digital age

EPISODE LINKS

Comfort Zone Instagram: <a href="https://www.instagram.com/comfortzonedj?utm_medium=beyondthedecks_podcast&utm_source=website"

In this episode of Beyond the Decks, Robert connects with Philip Röder, founder of Pick Yourself and a multifaceted figure in electronic music who has dedicated himself to empowering artists through education and authentic storytelling. From his early roots in punk rock to becoming a respected music producer, mixing and mastering engineer, Philip's journey represents a unique blend of technical expertise, authentic self discovery and artist advocacy.

Philip's path is marked by a transformative shift from marketing professional to full-time mixing and mastering engineer, driven by a disappointing studio experience during his time as a touring punk rock artist. Through his "Finish Your Framework" methodology and artist coaching, he has helped countless producers navigate the complexities of music production and industry relationships. This conversation explores his philosophy on authentic brand building, the importance of direct fan communication, and the power of collaboration over competition.

In this episode we cover:

Importance of having a supportive label for artist growth and success

In this conversation, we explore his experiences, including the World Electronic Music Festival, his residencies in Kitchener-Waterloo’s biggest clubs, and his evolving sound that now takes flight into ambient music.

Whether he’s mentoring a new DJ, creating therapeutic soundscapes, or delivering pounding performances, Jace embodies the spirit of community and creativity.

Transcript:

https://learningtodj.com/btd009-transcript

EPISODE LINKS

Jace's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dj_jace_jayruthfit/

Jace's Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/dj-jace

Jace's Beatport: https://www.beatport.com/artist/dj-jace/119835

Jace's Bandcamp: https://djjace.bandcamp.com/

UNDER THE RADAR, ON REPEAT & GUILTY PLEASURE

• Under-the-Radar: Benny Knox’s Immense Power.

• On Repeat: Beethoven’s classics, inspired by his son’s love for classical music.

• Guilty Pleasure: Grimy hip-hop with booming 808s

PODCAST INFO:

Beyond the Decks is your guide to mastering the art and business of the DJ, electronic and dance music industry.

Get New Episodes Straight To Your Inbox: https://start.learningtodj.com/podcast

Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/beyond-the-decks-podcast-with-robert-simoes-learningtodj-com/id1758609395

Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/34jVG0wkfNyinasE9G2jln

RSS: https://learningtodj.com/podcast/feed/

Youtube Full Episodes: https://www.youtube.com/@learningtodj

SUPPORT & CONNECT

Twitter/X: https://x.com/l2djschool

https://x.com/robert_x_world

Instagram: https://instagram.com/learningtodj

https://instagram.com/robdeepmusic

Youtubehttps://youtube.com/@learningtodj

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/people/Learningtodjcom/61556544425570/

Blue Sky: https://bsky.app/profile/learningtodj.bsky.social

OUTLINE

Introduction (00:00:00)

Early Influences (00:02:01)

First Gigs in Kitchener-Waterloo (00:05:54)

Formation of Fine Grind (00:09:14)

Residency at Revolution and Club Renaissance (00:13:17)

Decline of DJ Residencies? However, the essence of DJing—creating an emotional journey for the audience—remains unchanged.

The Importance of Music Production for DJs

Mark emphasizes that music production has become a crucial aspect of a DJ's career. Having original tracks helps DJs stand out in a crowded field and serves as a marketing tool. Despite the small market, his label managed to peak in the top 50 worldwide for progressive house. He highlights the importance of balancing artistic integrity with commercial viability.

Building Relationships in the Music Community

Mark shares his approach to signing tracks for his label, focusing on both the music and the potential for commercial success. He often invests in remixes from established artists to boost the visibility of newer producers, fostering strong relationships within the music community.

Music for Seekers: Merging Music with Spirituality

Creating Conscious Music Experiences

Mark's new project, Music for Seekers, aims to create a more conscious music experience, moving away from the typical nightlife culture. He describes the first event, which included elements like cacao ceremonies and breathwork, fostering community and connection among attendees.

The Role of Intuition and Mindfulness in Music Production

Mark highlights the importance of intuition in music production. He shares his daily rituals, including yoga and setting a creative mood in his studio, which help him tune into his creative energy.

Balancing Business and Art

The Duality of a Music Career

Mark's background in business and technology, including his role as the first CFO of Shopify, provides him with a unique perspective on the music industry. He believes that artists should approach their careers with a business mindset, recognizing the importance of marketing, audience building, and strategic decision-making.

Authenticity and Passion

Mark emphasizes the importance of authenticity in building a music career. He encourages aspiring DJs and producers to find their unique voice and create music that resonates with them personally.

Conclusion

This episode of "Beyond the Decks" offers a wealth of insights into the realities of the music industry, the importance of authenticity, and the need for a balanced approach to building a sustainable career as a DJ or producer. Mark MacLeod's journey serves as an inspiring example of how passion, perseverance, and a genuine love for music can lead to a fulfilling and impactful career.

By embracing technology, investing in production skills, building strong relationships, and integrating mindfulness practices, aspiring DJs and producers can navigate the challenges of the music industry and create meaningful connections with their audience. Ultimately, true fulfillment comes from within, and by sharing their authentic selves through music, artists can find lasting success and contribute to a more conscious and connected community.

Don’t miss future episodes of Beyond the Decks—subscribe on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and YouTube.

This probably helped him to develop a great appreciation for rhythm and music from when he was young.

Introduction to Breakbeats

A Baltimore relocation when he was ten years exposed Andre to breakbeats through the Baltimore club scene. This would reintroduce much difference in the way he understands rhythm and tempo. He recalls how hearing breakbeats laid over tracks from R&B opened his eyes to new musical possibilities.

Immersion into Industrial Music

As a teenager, in the 90s, Andre received an industrial music infection by raiding underground parties where DJs mixed industrial dance music with early techno. Already, this was an age of first awakenings. Hardcore and jungle’s frantic breakbeats erupted with his emotion for extreme sounds.

Transition to DJing and Production

DJing: How It All Began

Andre’s foray into DJing came around 1995 when he started mixing records with a friend’s turntables. It wasn’t long before he realized that DJing would free him from the complicated organization of finding and coordinating a band to express his musical ideas. The freedom furthered his drive to mix and transitioned him toward music production.

Early Approaches to Production

Early attempts at production in 1998 were humble affairs, with friends getting together and bringing along whatever piece of equipment they had. The quality of their first tracks might have been rough, but they were hooked. Indeed, Andre’s very first alias was a rather telling “Dell Phonic,” named after his early influences.

The Interrelation of DJ’ing and Production

Complementary Disciplines

Andre says that both DJing and production are vital to his artistry, but they exist for different reasons. DJing will give him the opportunity to perform some really unique experience by way of long blends and live mixing, whereas his production would then be more about creating individual tracks. He said the two go hand in hand, and usually, sometimes his production can be inspired from what he does as a DJ.

Creating Space in Music

The other vital ingredient which characterizes Andre’s production signature is the conscious use of space. He likes to think about it much like the creation of suspense in a film, where there might be no sound or very little action in order to make the event more emotional. He always tends to make busy arrangements, adding layer after layer of different perceptive elements, and then he peels them back just to retain the impactful sounds. This adds a lot of space and creates a better listen for the audience.

Andre also talks about frequency balance in his tracks. Often, he exports his work to test how it interacts with other music, making sure it occupies the right sonic space in a set by a DJ. That little bit of detail goes to show just how dedicated he is in making music that appeals to the dancers and listeners alike.

Exploration Beyond Formulaic Music

Avant-Garde Projects

Although Andre is fully aware of the formulaic aspect in dance music, experimentation also plays an important part in his approach: he says he has worked on more avant-garde projects—including one recently using vintage synthesizers—which would enable him to create music that wouldn’t necessarily fit into any mold or structure. It’s a creative release which balances those more formulaic productions.

The Allure of Extreme Music

It has been throughout this conversation that Andre declared his love for extreme music, be it heavy metal, post-rock, or just some experimental sounds. He values in each of these musical genres the way boundaries are being pushed and how great an impact raw or gentle musical pieces can have on emotional expression. He referred to bands like Deftones, stating that even with dramatic evolution, the core still holds within.

Music Commercial Aspects

Balancing Artistic Integrity and Commercial Viability

By the end of the episode, Robert and Andre talk about music on a commercial level. Andre starts to reflect on running labels, referring to his old imprint called Weaponry and the work he did with other artists. He can fully appreciate the tightrope that artists often have to balance between making music that is true to an artistic vision and commercial viability.

Recommendations for Rising Artists

Understanding Motivations and Intentions

Andre could share some words of wisdom to the emerging artists and DJs: know thyself, thy motivation, and thy intentions. Keep true to thine ideal, he says, and be very careful about trusting people around you because business might be oppressing at times.

Protection of the Artistic Work

He also underlines the protection against copyright and trademark, so that the work remains in control of the artist.

Homemade Weapons Selections

In the latter half, he plays three tracks that evoke emotions: a lesser-known compilation from the “Soul Food” series, an EP self-titled by the California band Citrus, and one guilty pleasure remix by “Wait in the Dark” by Memory Tapes. These typify the eclecticism in his taste and appreciation for established and nascent talent. Conclusion In this “Be on the Decks” podcast episode, Andre Delgado gives one an immersed view into the ride of this artist through the interplay of DJing and production, the importance of authenticity, and the pressures exerted by today’s music landscape on the artists. The easygoing conversation will make both the experience of the professional and young musician find something helpful to take away from. Whether you’re a budding DJ, an aspiring music producer, or simply a fan of electronic music, this show is full of actionable advice and insight to inspire and inform your musical journey.

rel="nofollow">(01:05:02)

Episode Summary

Early Musical Influences

Musical Family Background

Andre’s youth was filled with the variety of music from his father, a guitar and percussion player, and his stepfather, a saxophonist.
