Today we are in Chicago talking with our dear friend and inspired vocal teacher, Liz Jackson Hearns. Liz Jackson Hearns, MM (she/her/they/them) is the Co-Founder of The Voice Lab, Inc. in Chicago; co-author of The Singing Teacher's Guide to Transgender Voices, Co-Founder of Resonate, Chicago's all-trans chorus; Co-Founder of Trans Turning Point, a wellness fair for trans/gnc folks and trans-owned businesses;, and a voice instructor specializing in trans and nonbinary voice. Singers and voice users from all environments seek out Liz's teaching to illuminate traditional pedagogy with new scientific discoveries and methods in a joyful and creative atmosphere. Liz has been working with transgender and gender nonconforming clients since 2014, helping develop a natural, authentic voice. She also trains fellow voice teachers in cultural and pedagogical competency to work with trans/gnc singers. Liz has a bachelor's degree from the College of Idaho and a master's degree from North Park University, and attended the Summer Vocology Institute at the University of Utah. We talk to her today about teaching the trans voice, what we can all learn about being the best teacher and listener, we find out more about her latest endeavors with her training programs and choirs, as well as falling down some memories with Bill and Liz.

Episode 035 - Shawn Renzoh Head - Shakuhachi Flute

We have a very special guest here today from Japan, Shawn Renzoh Head. Born in St. Charles, Missouri, he began his musical education at 10 where he started on viola. He was introduced to music composition quickly after and began composing for ensembles at 15. Within a year, he had music performed throughout America and Europe. At 18, he discovered a passion for the shakuhachi while traveling throughout Asia. He soon became the youngest non-Japanese shakuhachi master in history. He earned his shihan, which means master, under Michael Chikuzen Gould. In 2019, he received the distinct honor of becoming an OSS Tai Shogun, which was given to him for his work in traditional Japanese music by Ronald Watt 9^th Dan Shotokan Karate and Order of the Rising Sun which is Japan’s top civilian award. He also earned his bachelor’s degree in composition from the Cleveland Institute of Music under Professors Keith Fitch and Steven Kohn. He was just up until recently located in Houston, but has now made the move to Japan. He performs on eight flutes crafted specifically for him by the revered flute makes, Yozan Hikichi.

Our guest today, Tatev Amiryan, was born and raised in Armenia in the Caucus Mountains. She has received her undergraduate and graduate degrees in music composition and music theory at Tchaikovsky Special Music School and in composition and musicology at the Komitas State Conservatory in Yerevan, Armenia and holds a doctorate of music arts degree in music composition from the University of Missouri, Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Drama. Her music is substantially influenced by traditional Armenian folk and sacred music. She uses the musical language of her heritage to compose and perform new works. She has composed for a range of musical instrumentation including vocal, instrumental, chamber to symphonic. Her music utilizes space, stretching structural expectations and pulling from her love of improvisational performance, typical of much of the folk music she grew up with. She is currently a member of the Union of Composers of the Republic of Armenia. Today we are going to talk to her about her music, what inspires her, a few of her pieces, and how her faith influences her music.

Episode 033 - Dorothea Taylor - The Matriarch of Percussion

Our guest today is Dorothea Taylor. She was born and raised in Michigan and started playing drums at 13 when she joined a drum and bugle corps in her hometown. She got her first set of drums in high school and joined a band after she graduated, playing five nights a week. She started teaching drumline for her high school’s feeder program when she was 17 and has been teaching ever since. She has played in a variety of bands including polka, rock, theater groups, symphony orchestras, jazz trios, and accompanies school concerts when an experienced drummer is needed. She’s formerly the drummer for a classical rock/new country band called Badlander, and is also the drummer for an All City Choir that has three big concerts a year. She has garnered a large audience on her YouTube page as well as her Instagram where she routinely posts warmup exercises that are simple and effective in teaching a skill or rudiment. Today we are going to be talking to her about her life, growing up as one of the only females in the percussion world, favorite rudiments, and more.

Episode 031 - Annie Nikunen - Dancing Through Music

We are in New York City again and we have the wonderful opportunity to talk with Annie Nikunen. born in Northport, New York, and now lives in New York City. She received a BA in music theory and composition at Barnard College/ Columbia University, and pursued flute performance at the Manhattan School of Music. She was referred to as the “best flute player in the state of New York” by The Observer and is a founding member of the New York City based new music group Blackbox Ensemble. They have recently begun performing again and was featured in The New Yorker. She has led a life filled with music, but also has had a continuous love with dance. At 13 she was selected to be the youngest trainee with the Joffrey Ballet School. She began exploring modern dance styles and improvisation. This spurred on an interest in utilizing and amalgamating elements of ballet, modern dance, and contact improvisation in her musical practice. Not only has music performance and dance played a key role in her life, but she is a constant supporter of new music and the continuation of new music and dance. Today we are going to talk to her about her life, being a drum major, dancing through music, and some of her newest works!

Episode 030 - Bahar Royaee - Electronic Music from Iran

We are in New York City today and we have the wonderful opportunity to talk with Bahar Royaee. Originally born and raised in Iran, she moved to the United States to pursue a music education. She received her Master’s of Music in composition from the Boston Conservatory, where she studied with Felipe Lara and Marti Epstein. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in composition at The Graduate School at CUNY where she studies with Jason Eckardt and Suzanne Farrin. She was the runner-up in the National Sawdust’s 2018-19 Hildegard Competition and has won the Roger Sessions Memorial Compositions Award, Walter W. Harp Music and Society Award, John Bavicchi Memorial Prize, and the Korourian Electroacoustic Award. As you heard in Kitchen, her music combines timbral and sound-based atmospheric structures that is interspersed with lyrical influences derived from her Iranian background. Her works have been performed worldwide including Germany, Canada, Greece, the US, and Italy. She is also the founder of the CanvaSounds group. We will talk to her about her musical life, what the CanvaSounds ensemble is, and what inspires her about the world around us.

We are in the “Red Stick” today; Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Not only is it home to the LSU Tigers (GEAUX TIGAHS) and Southern University Panthers, but it is also home to our next guest: Mara Gibson. She is originally from Charlottesville, Virginia, and eventually went on to Bennington College and then SUNY Buffalo where she completed her Ph.D. She has received grants and honors from the American Composer’s Forum, The Banff Center, Louisiana Division of the Arts, ArtsKC, Meet the Composer, the National Endowment for the Arts, ASCAP, the MacDowell Colony, and Yale University. Her music has been performed throughout the United States, Canada, South America, Asia, and Europe. She previously worked at the University of Missouri, Kansas City Conservatory, and now works at Louisiana State University as Associate Professor of Music Composition. In the summer of 2020, she released her third CD project featuring Secret Sky performed by the Athens Philharmonic Orchestra. Today we are going to talk to her about her life, her music, and the intersections of art and music.

Episode 022 - Paul Novak - Feathery Complexity

In today’s episode, we are in the “Windy City”, the “City of Big Shoulders”, or more commonly Chicago! He is originally from Reno, Nevada, but now lives in Chicago where he attends the University of Chicago in pursuit of his PhD in Music Composition. I met Paul when he was just in high school and he blew me away with his musical knowledge and insanely deep musical intuition. He is a brilliant composer and we know he will be a big star very soon. He was recently the recipient of the American Composers Orchestra’s 2020 Underwood Commission for a new work that will premiere in Carnegie Hall. Paul also traveled to Burapha, Thailand, as part of the Thai Experimental Laboratory for Young Composers where he collaborated with Thai musicians and composed a new piece for traditional Thai instruments. He currently has several commissions from ensembles including the Boston New Music Initiative, KINETIC Ensemble, and Willinger Duo. In our episode today, we talk about Scriabin, harmonic melody, the erhu, the idea of “ma”, and having a life changing experience by having a pieced performed as a young person.

Episode 021 - Catherine Likhuta - Composing for the Wind World

In today’s episode, we travel to the “Land Down Under” but not before we make a short pit-stop in Kiev, Ukraine. Catherine Likhuta comes from Kyiv, Ukraine, but currently lives in Brisbane, Australia. She received her bachelor’s degree in jazz piano from the Kyiv Gliere University and a post-degree in music composition from the Kyiv Conservatory. She has since gone on and recently finished her PhD at the University of Queensland. Her music has been performed all over the world including Canada, the US, Brazil, Europe, and Australia. She is also a performing including on the premiere and CD recording of ‘Out Loud’, her piano concerto commissioned by the Cornell University Wind Ensemble. She has performed with numerous collaborators on some of the biggest stages including the World Saxophone Congress, twice at the International Horn Symposium, Eastman, Northwestern, and the University of Michigan. Today we are going to be talking about her life, music, inspirations, and the world of wind band literature. We hope to find out more about her Ukrainian past and how that influences her music as well.

Episode 020 - Matthew Lau - Contemporary Percussion

Today’s guest comes to us from Hong Kong. He holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Contemporary Percussion Performance from Stony Brook University in New York where he studied with Eduardo Leandro, and a Master of Music degree from NYU where he studied with Jonathan Haas, Simon Boyar, and James Saporito. He is currently an adjunct faculty member at the Hong Kong Baptist University and maintains a private teaching studio. He was also the winner of the 2018 Hong Kong Arts Development Award for Young Artist and a finalist in the 2016 Italy Percussive Arts Society Competition in the Vibraphone Category. He has performed around the world with performances in Moscow, Russia, Perth, Phoenix, Indianapolis, Buenos Aires, New York City, and so many more. When he isn’t traveling the world performing, he is promoting new music as the co-founder and artistic director of the contemporary percussion group The Up:Strike Project. When he isn’t swamped with these obligations and travel, he is an avid knitter and certified as a Level 1 Master Knitter by The Knitting Guild Association.

We have traveled back to America this episode with an interview with a young, up-and-coming composer from North Carolina, Tyson Davis. He began composing music at 8 and just graduated from the North Carolina School for the Arts where he made some seriously big waves with his music and artistry while studying with Lawrence Dillon. He began his first year of college at Juilliard this year and has many, many accomplishments. In 2019, he worked with the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America and Antonio Pappano to premiere his work, Delicate Tension, that had been commissioned by the American Embassy in Berlin for the 30^th Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. He also recently won the 68^th BMI Student Composer Awards as well as the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award. I met this welcoming and warm young man while doing a deep dive on Instagram. His music is beautiful, terse, passionate, and gifted beyond his years. Like myself, he is passionate about social equality and we are going to talk to him about depicting the real world in a musical form.
