<itunes:author>Gen X Jersey </itunes:author>
<itunes:summary>Gen X Jersey is a point-of-view podcast where host Melissa, a writer immersed in the independent NJ music scene, says what she sees through her Gen X Jersey girl lens. One theme at a time, pulled from life, news, culture, and music.

She follows the thought wherever it goes, connecting what’s happening now with what she’s seen before. You may not always agree, and that’s part of it. Listeners can chime in or jump into the conversation by calling 732-455-9155.</itunes:summary>

Gen X Jersey is a point-of-view podcast built around host Melissa’s one simple idea: she says what she sees, through her own Gen X Jersey girl lens. A food and travel enthusiast who's a writer by trade and immersed in the independent music scene, she brings it all into the mix.

Everything here is filtered through that perspective, from life to news to culture and music. She’s been around long enough to watch things go around and come back around, sometimes in ways that look completely different at first… until they don’t.

Each episode picks a theme and runs with it. Sometimes it comes from the past, sometimes from what’s happening right now, but it always comes back to lived experience and a point of view that’s had time to shift, settle, and get clearer.

She’s not here as an expert. She’s the one your friends would tell you to talk to, the one who’s paid attention, asked the questions, and figured out a way of doing life that a lot of people are still trying to get to.

There’s an extension of the show on independent radio, where she plays what she loves and says what she wants. This is where she has more room to go further, follow the thought, and stay with it a little longer.

You may not always agree, or even understand it. That’s OK. That’s part of it.

You can chime in or pitch yourself as a guest on the call line at 732-455-9155.

<itunes:summary>Part 2 of Chapter 1 firmly drives Gen X Jersey into its new direction, blending personal memories with commentary on media, culture and modern life through a Gen X lens.

What begins with memories of newspapers and local TV news in 1970s New Jersey leads to Jimmy Carter’s famous 1979 “malaise speech” and the surprising realization that parts of it feel far more relevant today than they did at the time.

Even if you don’t remember the speech, or Jimmy Carter at all, you may be surprised by how familiar some of it sounds now.

Melissa brings a soundtrack to this to life on her companion radio show, Gen X Jersey, Wednesday nights at 10PM on Radio Garden State. Tune in for a playlist curated to match this chapter or find the “Gen X Jersey” playlists on Amazon Music anytime.

<itunes:summary>After last week’s Let’s Get Sad, Melissa flips the script.
In this episode of Gen X Jersey: The Aftershow, she sets out to find the songs that bring her joy and realizes they’re much harder to name than the ones that make her feel something.

Less about lyrics and more about energy, this playlist is built around the songs that get you out of your own head and invite you to just move.

The discussion veers to why joy is harder to catalog than other emotions, and why it might be worth paying closer attention to the songs that simply make things feel lighter. This ep isn't about the songs you grew up with; it's about whatever works.

<itunes:summary>“Oh my God… is this what adulthood is?”

One question sparks an hour of music and reflection in this episode of Gen X Jersey: The Aftershow. Melissa builds a “feel the feels” playlist and asks listeners to do something simple, but rare: stop, listen, and actually feel it.

It’s not all heavy. There’s honesty, a little perspective from musicians , and a reminder that even the sad songs can leave you with something lighter.

Season 1 is wrapping up, and the show is evolving.

Same name. New direction.

<itunes:summary>Melissa hosts from her Spring Break road trip and follows up on last week’s Rock Star: INXS episode with a couple of unexpected calls to the show.

One comes from former contestant Marty Casey, who shares his connection to New Jersey and previews the upcoming reunion show. She also teases a message from a reality TV producer who worked on Rock Star: INXS and got his start in the early days of Survivor and American Idol, hinting at a future interview.

With a shorter show this week, the music took the lead.

In this After Show, she revisits what made the series feel different from everything else on TV at the time. It wasn’t about becoming famous. It was about earning a place in an iconic rock band with a legacy to protect.

She reflects on what the contestants went through and what happened after the show wrapped, once the cameras were gone.

If you remember it, this will take you right back. If you don’t, the music alone is worth it.

                <itunes:subtitle>Radio Show Premier Recap</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>In the debut episode of Gen X Jersey: The Aftershow, Melissa unpacks the cultural threads behind Episode 1, starting with Elvis Costello and his defiant performance of Radio Radio on Saturday Night Live. From there, she revisits the launch of MTV on August 1, 1981, including the "second" song ever played on the station and the split between early cable-subscribers-only cool and top radio hits like Jessie's Girl.

She reflects on taste, rebellion, record store culture and the difference between what “everyone” was listening to and the artists that she remembers as her own musical identity, from Roxy Music to XTC. Melissa also introduces the idea behind the Blue Light Special segment of the show, where she invites introspective and asks you to "Put the Phone Down, Close Your Eyes and Listen."
