For more than 100 years, the South Ocean City Improvement Association (SOCIA) has sponsored the Annual July 4th Bike Parade. As membership declined in recent years, the Board considered a dissolution of the organization.

Jack Johnson and his neighbor Karen Fuller came to the rescue. Their love of country and devotion to tradition fueled them to recruit an entire battalion of neighbors and this year’s celebration of the nation’s birthday was even more special this year.

With the help of Mike Dattilo and the City of Ocean City, they established the first Annual 42nd Street Block Party – an all-day event that brought hundreds of members of the community together – reminding us how fortunate we are to live in a country based on democracy.

Testing revealed the cause was the long QT syndrome, a condition that causes an abnormal heart rhythm and can lead to sudden cardiac arrest. Simon’s Heart is the foundation that keeps Simon’s memory alive and aims to prevent the loss of other children from a detectable and treatable condition.

Sister Constance and Sister Jeannette are nuns who spent 31 years at St Francis de Sales School in Philadelphia. They came in 1984 when the school was in disrepair and many students were refugees from around the world. Armed with great teaching skills, structure, and love, they transformed the failing school into a model of academic excellence. This past Spring, they spent several weeks working at the Southern border helping to care for unaccompanied boys ages 13-17 and refugee families. In their round trip, they logged over 14, 500 miles. These incredible women are both over 80 years old!

Jeremy was engaged to be married when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He recovered from surgery but continues to struggle with balance, leaving him confined to a wheelchair. His wife Chelsie sought the talents of a fellow school teacher Matt Zigler (pictured below), who worked with students to create “WheeStroll” – an adaptive vehicle that combines a stroller and wheelchair giving Jeremy the independence that allows him to take his five-month-old son for a walk.

Dr. Creagan is a Professor of Medical Oncology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, John and Roma Rouse Professor of Humanism in Medicine, and Palliative Care Consultant.

Equine therapy is a tool for navigating the return to civilian life for veterans and first responders. The patient takes the horse into the arena where obstacles are set up. The horse can sense the rider’s anxiety, anger and will not cooperate. Then the pair works together and overcomes the obstacle together, learning coping skills for life. Janet sees her program as an opportunity to thank and serve those who have served our country.

Katie Keating is a nurse, the mother of 10, and her youngest child Luke, has Down Syndrome. She is a leader in her faith community and a tireless advocate for those who experience homelessness and members of the Down Syndrome community

Helen Milligan is a Physical Therapist at CHOP and for 18 years has led the charge to include Physical Therapy as a basic component of care for patients with Down Syndrome, including her 18-year-old son Aiden.

Greg Colelli was diagnosed with Colorectal Cancer at the young age of 38 and another suspicious growth at age 58. When the doctor learned that his father and two uncles had colorectal cancer and his aunt had uterine cancer, genetic testing was done and revealed the Lynch Syndrome.

At age 35, Stephanie’s heart stopped while she slept. A fortuitous phone call awakened her husband who noticed her irregular breathing. His quick reflex to perform CPR gave her a second chance at life, and now she is a passionate advocate, volunteer, and fundraiser for the American Heart Association – sharing the message that everyone should learn CPR.

Dr. Baker is the founding Director of the Mary H. Weiser Food Allergy Center and the Ruth Dow Doan Professor at Michigan Medicine. For 20 years, Dr. Baker was the chief of the Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology at the U-M. He is also a professor of biomedical engineering in the College of Engineering and the Director of the Michigan Nanotechnology Institute for Medicine and Biological Sciences. For the past 5 years, he was also the CEO and CMO of Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE) the national food allergy foundation.

Dr. Zurlo is a Distinguished Professor of Medicine and the Director of the Infectious Disease Division at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

Marc and Sharon volunteer as Clowns at St Mary’s Hospital and Sharon is Mrs. Claus for Marc’s work with the annual Breakfast with Santa.​

Deni Carise, Ph.D. is a Clinical Psychologist and part of the recovery community for over 30 years. She is currently Chief Scientific Officer of Recovery Centers of America (RCA) and Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dawn is an Emmy award winning TV journalist, anchor and host. She is recognized for her work in cities across the country but is especially well loved in Philadelphia.
