God's Foreknowledge is not God looking through time, seeing who chooses Him and who rejects Him, and then electing those who choose Him to eternal life. Rather, God's foreknowledge is God choosing to enter into a special relationship with certain people. This is by His grace and is based on God's own good pleasure.

In this episode, I discuss John 1:1 and why the last phrase should be translated, "and the Word was God". The Jehovah's Witnesses translate that phrase, "and the Word was a god". I explain some basics of Biblical Greek, talk about Colwell's Rule, and then point to John 1:1a and John 1:3 as a reference to the eternality of the Word. I also discuss Mark 2:28 as evidence the Jehovah's Witnesses New World Translation (NWT) is inconsistent in it's translation process.

My main argument against Catholicism in this area is that the Bible describes what the cross of Jesus Christ accomplished, and that does not line up with what The Roman Catholic Church teaches about their supposed "sacrifice" of the Eucharist.

Mark 2:1-12

(Mark 2:1–12, ESV) And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them. And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic— “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.” And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”

Roman Catholics will use verses in the Bible which include the word "Tradition" as a defense for their own position. That is, that the full truth of God is found through the Roman Catholic Church through the written Scriptures and the Oral Apostolic Traditions which were passed down in the Church. Is it an accurate interpretation of Scripture to assume "Tradition" in the Bible means the same thing as what Roman Catholics say "Tradition" is today?

The Biblical "Canon" refers to the list of books that are Scripture. Roman Catholics say Protestants wouldn't even know what books are Scripture without the "Tradition" of the Roman Catholic Church. How do Protestants know which books are Scripture? Does "Sola Scriptura" allow the Protestant to know the canon. I argue that if Scripture is from God, then He will reveal Scripture to us. God does not need the Roman Catholic Church in order to communicate truth to His people.

The Apocrypha, also called Deuterocanonical books by Catholics, are extra books included in the Roman Catholic Old Testament, but not part of the Protestant Old Testament. In this episode, I discuss the reasons I do not believe the Deuterocanonical books are Sacred Scripture. These writings give us historical information and are generally useful, but they are not to be used as Holy Scripture. The Roman Catholic Council of Trent in 1546 says they are Scripture. Do we have to believe the Roman Catholic Church just because they say so?

I believe justification is by faith alone. It is the gift of God, where the righteousness of Jesus Christ is imputed to sinners by faith. Nothing we can do, even in a state of grace, can earn any aspect of our salvation. Ephesians 2:8 says, "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God," But what about James 2:24? "You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone." How can these 2 concepts be reconciled?

I briefly overview the Roman Catholic idea of justification. Then I share some history of Martin Luther, leading up to his discovery of the Bible's true meaning of the "righteousness of God". Our righteousness is imputed to us because of the perfect work on Jesus Christ. Our eternal punishment for sin was paid by Jesus on the cross, but His life of perfect obedience is positive righteousness also reckoned to our account. We stand before God and He declares us righteous, not because of our own good works, but because of the works of Jesus Christ.

This begins our long series on Roman Catholicism vs Protestantism. It all starts with justification. How is sinful man made right with God? For Roman Catholics, it is faith plus works. For Protestants, it is by faith alone. I discuss the Roman Catholic methods for attaining justification. This includes baptism to wash away Original Sin, but also includes Penance or Confession for the forgiveness of future sins. I also discuss Indulgences and the Treasury of Merit. The corrupt selling of indulgences was the inspiration for Martin Luther to pen his famous 95 Theses.

I discuss the basics of how the Old Testament was written, and discuss passages within the Old Testament which are evidence the text was revised and updated over time. I also explain why the Hebrew Bible is called the Tanakh and some differences between the Tanakh and the version of the Old Testament in my Protestant Bible. A basic historical timeline is also provided for the composition of the Old Testament.

I share the "Minimal Facts Argument" proposed by Dr. Gary Habermas and Dr. Mike Licona as the foundational evidence for my belief Jesus was raised from the dead. These "Minimal Facts" are well accepted among New Testament scholars, even those scholars who are not Christians. After stating the facts, I explain how they arrived at those facts, and I close the episode talking about what Jesus resurrection means for Christians in eternity.

Minimal Facts

1. Jesus died by crucifixion.
2. His disciples had experiences, as individuals and groups, in which they believed they saw the risen Jesus.
3. Jesus’ resurrection was preached from the very beginning of Christianity, and his disciples were willing to die.
4. Paul, initially an enemy of Christianity, also had an experience in which he believed he saw the risen Jesus, and this changed his life.

In this episode, I talk about God's Judgment and share my journey in discovering why God's judgment is necessary and often misunderstood. The basic outline is this:

1. God's judgment is necessary.
2. I underestimate God's view of sin.

We like the idea of people being punished for wronging us. When people wrong us, and seem to get away with it, we hate that. The good news is that God sees all and will punish those who wrong us. The bad news is that we have wronged others and therefore deserve punishment as well. 

I also explain how God's judgment and wrath are an outflowing of His holiness and love. Why can't God just be a God of love and mercy, without justice and punishment?

God's judgment seems harsh because I often underestimate God's view of sin.

Every human seems to know there are fundamental moral truths all humans are responsible to obey. If these objective moral laws are violated, humans feel they have the right to say to the violator, "You are wrong". Here are the basics of the Moral Argument for God:

1. If objective moral laws exists, then God exists.
2. Objective moral laws do exists, therefore, God exists.

Basically, laws require a Law Giver.

I address some arguments presented by atheists as to why these moral laws may exists, and show the atheists' inconsistencies in their beliefs.
