23- Breaking the Cycle of the Fear of Judgement

Have you ever had this conversation with yourself? “I really want to do that or try that or I really feel like God is calling me to do that…but …what will they think?” It has stopped many dreamers in their tracks from moving forward because “they” are out there, thinking their thoughts.

If you are like me, you may have found yourself crippled with paralysis over the fear of others judging you.

There have been times in my life the anxiety of both wanting to be brave and seeing thought bubbles above another person’s head criticizing me left me feeling sick to my stomach. I wanted desperately to move forward but I knew I couldn’t just fake it, I had to let God show me why it was I felt like this, why this fear had such a hold on me.

Although His answer was many layers deep, one of the things He revealed to me was that the judgement I feared the most was also the place I judged others most. How could I think I could harbor mean thoughts toward others and yet not fear others were thinking the same things about me.

To this day it is still something I struggle to keep in check. We are wired for judging but could it be possible the same measure we are using against others is also the measure we fear being used against us?

It says this exact thing in Matthew 7:2 “For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” So we have to ask ourselves, how are we judging?

Without the help of the Lord we might circle around this till the day we die. Let’s let Him show us the ways that we are trying to protect ourselves through our judgement and when we don’t know for sure, let grace and mercy preside.

Help us Lord to love people more genuinely, believe the best and be set free to run our race with courage.

22- Trusting Jesus in our Calling with Melissa Spoelstra

In this episode I chat with Bible teacher and speaker, Melissa Spoelstra on all things calling and how the Lord led her into what she does now.

Melissa really gets into what it costs to follow Jesus into what He is calling us to. Sometimes it is easy to look at the glamour and flashy side of the ministry we feel God is calling us to, or even just the best sides of living life with Christ, but there is also a side that will cost us.

It can be so easy to want to give up and stop pressing on when things get challenging and difficult for as we follow the Lord as if we are doing it all wrong or it is simply not meant for us, but when Jesus calls you to it, you follow Him at all costs. We get knocked down, we live in doubt, we cry our eyes out and then we wipe our tears away and get back to walking by faith with our Lord.

Melissa Spoelstra is a women’s conference speaker, Bible teacher and author who is madly in love with Jesus and passionate about helping others to seek Christ and know Him more intimately. 21- Not our Kingdom but His

Ever feel like you are entering the freak out zone? The tightening in your chest, the feeling like you're falling behind, the wondering of what God actually wants you to do next and the dream you see in your heart is weighing on you as if it as all up to you.

Me too.

Anxiety and striving can rush in when we have forgotten who it's all about. Sure Jesus uses us, He equips us and He loved us so much that He died for us, but that does not make this story ours, its His.

This episode is a moment into my life, my heart, my relationship with the Lord and where He shows up once again through our surrendered hearts that proclaim, "I am not the King and this is not my Kingdom."

When we lift Jesus high, know Jesus' truth, remember how big He is and all that He is capable of our peace can return because it was never about us in the first place.

We lift you high Lord, let your kingdom come and your will be done.

In this episode I talk with children's book author, Kristen Jenson, about her book, "Good Pictures, Bad Pictures: Porn Proofing Today's young kids".

I have to admit, as a mother of young men this topic has terrified me and I avoided it at all costs, all the while knowing this is the reality of the digital world we live in and that our children are at risk for exposure to these kind of images no matter what lengths we may go to to protect them.

I was resistant to even approach the subject or the book, but once I read through it and sat down with my kids as well, I realized it wasn't teaching them about this awful world they may get exposed to but rather preparing them for what to do if they should get exposed to it.

We make a plan for fires, for strangers and other possible dangers and Kristen's book is exactly that; teaching our kids to turn away, tell a trusted adult and name it for what it is.

I hope you will find our discussion insightful and helpful in navigating a wild world of online and social media evil to help our kids know how to avoid it and do what it is right and how to help them if they have fallen in this trap.

In this episode, I talk with my friend Suzanne McLean who I met 16 years ago in Northern Ireland where she was eventually my boss for a performing arts team called “Axiom” where we traveled and performed in churches and schools and I loved it.

Suzi has been in youth work for years but eventually felt the nudge from the Lord to try for the National Director for Youth for Christ in Northern Ireland and to her surprise, she got it.

We discuss the difficulties of leadership and how we can not spend time trying to please people but focus on obeying the Lord, about how finding and following our calling is about listening for God’s voice along each step of the way and about what advice she would give to those who want to step out and believe God to use them in whatever way He has designed them for.

15 - Trusting God in the Unknown

Every year seems like to fly by faster than the year before. I remember when my boys were babies every day seemed incredibly long and it seemed so hard, no it didn’t seem hard, it was hard. Every one would always tell me how fast it all goes but it mostly felt like just trying to survive.

Now every time I look at my boys I wonder how they got so big, 9 and 6, and yet trying to drink in and hold them in the space they are in, because soon these will be the days that I will say, “oh they were so little”. I wish I could freeze them in time, but they remind me they have to grow up, I know.

There have been a lot of really hard seasons in my life, but what I have come to realize that there is always the challenge facing all of us that asks, “will I trust God now in this”?

I am not sure why we keep wondering why things seem so weird, so hard to understand, so different to everyone else we are trying not to compare our lives to. But I think this is the life of following God. What kind of life are we are living if we always understand how everything will turn out, if we are always sure of what is going to happen next, if we are the ones who we need and don’t stay absolutely dependent on our true source, God?

Let me let you in on a little secret, none of us have this figured out, we all struggle, we are all army crawling our way through this, groping our way in the dark. But here is another thing, we have this choice. A choice that says, “ I am going to take the path of least resistance, I am going to micro manage my life because if I don’t who will, I am going to strive, work harder, run from my wounds and avoid all conflicts in order to try to keep myself safe.” OR we can say “I am all in Lord. Whatever you say I will do, no matter how scary and irrational your way seems.”

The bottom line is this, if we choose to follow the Lord and walk by faith our life will never feel “normal” whatever that is. We can just get comfortable with being uncomfortable until the only thing that seems to remain that our constant source of comfort is the one who was always there, Jesus.

Just look at the Bible and all the many stories showing us what life is meant to look like for the people of God. Not perfect, not without hardship, not without feeling like Jesus sometimes is late or never comes at all, not without disappointments or confusion and certainly not without having to sometimes look like just a plain foo. Noah built a boat before there was rain, Joshua led people to march around walls and shout to conquer a city, Jesus himself was born to an unwed mother, raised a carpenter and the man that came to bring salvation to all mankind was hanging out with fishermen and prostitutes. If your life feels unconventional, welcome to the club, you are one of us, we love you and let’s talk how weird and wonderful it is to not fit in.

God’s Word says that His Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path in Psalm 119:5. There are so many times I wish it said His Word was a spot light down the path and around the corner but it doesn’t. God knows our proclivity to want to run ahead, to rely on ourselves and get into all kinds of trouble He is trying to get us to avoid. When we are surrounded by the dark, our steps are much more careful. We do not know what is coming and this makes us dependent on our source of light to make our next step sure, one moment at a time.

As we start to step into this new year, this new century we don’t know what it has for us, what trials, what joys, what learning or stretching opportunities are coming our way, but the one who loves us does. The one who called us from the beginning, the one who thought us up before we were, the one who chose to die for us with no guarantee we would ever choose Him back, this great lover of our souls knows what is ahead and He will help us through, one step at a time. We can trust Him.

13-Goal Setting

Almost as much as I love the holidays, I love this time of year for thinking about the next year.

This is the time when we get ready for new beginnings, think about what worked and what didn’t work. It is the time of year to plan and dream and listen for what God might be speaking about what He might be dreaming and planning for us.

My goal setting and planning is a hodgepodge from much wiser, more well thought out women (namely Lara Casey and Jennie Allen) but I will share my process and hope to help you think through a little about what you want to see in your life in this next year.

One Little Word

Picking a word for the year is no new thing here on the internets. I am not sure how many years now I have been picking one word to focus on for the year, maybe 6 or 7 years now, but I love doing it. If you are new to the idea, let me explain. Instead of coming up with a ton of New Years resolutions you pick one Word to really focus on. Lara Casey has great articles on how to find your one word. Here is the one from 2019, but I am sure she will have an awesome one this year as well. As she takes you through her process you look for themes and choose your one word that way. I have done that and I have simply just asked the Lord for the word.

The thing that I love about it is you find the theme running throughout your year, like an anchor point bringing you back to center, what you want to focus on.

What will your word be for 2020? I encourage you to take some time and sit down with your questions and really take some time to think through it.

So, what other parts of goal setting have I found helpful?

One of the best parts of Lara’s process I think is asking ourselves the question, “what worked this year” or “what didn’t work” and what we learned from those things. We have all heard it a million times that doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result is the definition of insanity. If we want a different outcome to what our lives look like, we have to be willing to change some things, no matter how scary it might be.

What is it we want to accomplish? How do we want to change? What do we want to experience? What is the legacy we want to leave with our families, with our friends and loved ones, with the world? What burns in our hearts?

The biggest encouragement I can tell you to do is write it down. Write down what you want to do and how you might go about doing those things. I don’t know what it is about writing it but it makes a difference and it’s a place where you can always go back and see how far you have come, what progress you have made.

11- The Power of Fasting & Prayer

I don’t know about you all, but I wasn’t taught a lot about fasting when I was growing up in the church. I think the extent of my interaction with it was something called “the 30 Hour Famine”. Did you guys do these in your youth group? If I am honest I don’t remember exactly why we did them just that we went 30 hours without eating.

Well into my marriage and my thirties I began to become more interested in learning about fasting, what the Bible said about it and what impact it can have on our lives and the lives around us. Our church in Denver at the time called us to a 40 day fast and we decided to participate fasting during the day and then eating dinner at night. I don’t remember very well what the outcome was for that time of prayer or even what we were praying for, but I do remember the intimacy with the Lord it created.

When I first started this process it was easy to get discouraged and the Enemy would come to mess with me in the most irritating of ways. I would wonder why I wasn’t seeing answers to my specific prayers right away? But during that time I also found a series on fasting by Tony Evans (you can find it here).

He said that often times when we are praying for something that has been a stronghold for many years, that each time we fast it is like taking a sledgehammer to a concrete wall. At first, you only see a little crack, but the more you do it, the bigger the cracks are and eventually, with enough persistence, that thing is coming down.

Do we believe that God is able to do more than we are currently seeing? Are we willing to press in and seek it?

If so, let’s take God at His Word and begin to implement this on a regular basis, but know this, the Enemy knows how powerful fasting is and He will come for you. Any little irritation to get you to doubt, stop, become anxious and get you away from the places where the power lies will start happening. Be prepared, be in God’s Word, be in worship, this is a battle, but a battle that is well worth it.

Another thing that I have seen again and again in fasting is that answers do not always come right away. t might be days, weeks or even months before you start to see even a glimpse of the work God might have begun from the moment you began to pray. In most of my fasts, I have seen things come about in many ways within months, however.

Fasting is not just for ourselves, but to fight in faith for others, because we know Him and we know what He is capable of. Will we intercede on behalf of the people we love? What do we have to lose for the chance that God might intervene in their lives?

As we become more and more free, let’s press into love to the ones who we are called to build for. Let’s love the Lord and others by taking Him at His word in prayer and fasting.

What on earth is the Fear of Success?

Is this really a thing? Do people really struggle with this?

Isn’t success the thing that we’re all sort of wanting in our lives in even the tiniest ways? Why on earth would we fear this?

I hear you loud and clear because these questions and thoughts were the ones I had as well. Yet, as I followed the Lord into what I thought He was asking me to do I knew I was struggling with fears that were on the verge of debilitating but I couldn’t figure out what was at the root of them? The fear of failure was so up in my face, it felt easier to locate, describe and address, but there was still something else lingering in the background and when I boiled it down it was that there was a part of me that was afraid of succeeding.

When we say success maybe what automatically comes into mind is a rich man on a yacht retired in his old age fanning himself with hundred dollar bills (just me?), but success can encompass so many things. If we want to start a business and it actually takes off, stepping out into a dream or pursuing what God is speaking to you, or it could be becoming free from harmful patterns we have allowed for far too long in our lives.

Again, not so easy to identify why anyone wouldn’t want these things but let me ask you something…have you ever judged anyone who is successful because it has made you feel some kind of way?

Be it insecure, behind, lacking, alone, inferior, whatever the case may be, often times the success they are embodying makes us feel less than about ourselves and so we will judge the people as bad, fake, wrong.

So how do we deal with this in a world of social media set up for us to constantly judge one another, do you like this or don’t you like it? The first thing we can do is notice our thinking about certain topics or people, how does the person or this idea of succeeding in that way make me feel, how do I react? Is there a pain that is associated with this and where was that pain afflicted? What does the Enemy whisper to us about our self-worth and why we should loathe others who trigger our greatest insecurities?

It can come up in so many ways. We can’t dare risk moving forward because it may cause pain or disappointment and so, we simply refuse to try or come up with a million excuses why we can not or do not want to try. Or what if having success means I make people uncomfortable (like healthy people made me feel being overweight) and they, therefore, reject me because I am successful, is it really worth it?

Lastly, we can fear the result of having success, will people look at us more when we might want to stay hidden, will we have more responsibility when we aren’t sure we can perform, will we be expected to keep going and doing and can we handle that pressure.

We know where we have always been but actually getting success in little or big ways is uncharted territory. We don’t know what it is like there, we don’t know if it is safe?

If we are growing and using a large portion of our talents than we are successful. Becoming people of character, daring to have the conversation, volunteer for the ministry, start the podcast, every time we overcome our fears or dare to trust God and step out with what He has put in our hands we watch God do impossible things for no ones like you and me.

What might we miss out on as an amazing adventure with our wildly creative and loving God because we allowed this fear to stop us?

8 -Forgiveness & Restoration

There’s nowhere better to start talking about forgiveness than maybe in a place where it is sometimes the hardest to face and that is with the people closest to us.

n this episode, I have a conversation with my mom, Erin Ruddell, and we share our story and what we went through in our relationship when things were really hard in both of our lives and we had to learn what relationship and forgiveness and moving forward with God and one another really looked like.

My mom begins by sharing how this season all started, with the death of both of her parents, my grandparents and how that sent her, especially into a tailspin. It was a hard time of losing both parents seven months apart all the while my brother and I got married and started our families, my sister graduated from high school, my youngest brother struggled to get through high school and my dad retired, talk about transition.

As she struggled with her own dark season of loss, I became a mother and was hit with postpartum but didn’t know I had. This mix of feelings and pain was a set up for disaster.

As I walked through my postpartum the Lord began to show me the why’s behind my pain. I wanted my mom to be able to fix it for me like parents do, but this was one area that it had to get ugly with just me and the Lord, so He could show me who my true Savior was, and it wasn’t my mom. She also shares that the Lord showed her that He needed to do this with just He and I and that she was to let go, but the more she let go, the more it hurt me and so, even though God had good plans the pain continued on for years.

I resented my mother because I had so many expectations of what I thought a mother should do, should be, should act like with her daughter who just had her first baby and because she wasn’t doing any of those things, I decided to blame all the pain I was experiencing on her. She was in her own version of trying to escape pain, all ways that seemed to hurt me even more and this resulted in fights and cold shoulders for years to come.

I held onto my unforgiveness for my mom because I was convinced that she owed me for the pain I felt she caused. In the meantime, my harshness with her continued to hurt her and she struggled with her own battle of forgiveness with me. We would fight and cry and pray and then it would all stay the same. What was God doing? A much deeper inner work. Digging up old roots, exposing lies and bad beliefs is not a one-time healing process. For both of us, it took many months and years of us both trying to obey the Lord, deal with our own relationship with Him and our own brokenness as God began to heal us and set us free.

7 - An Open Letter to My Inner Critic

We all know all to well the voice that tells us all we are not, over and over again. The one that tries to stop us from moving forward, from walking by faith, from believing or even trusting God. I have had about enough of this nonsense, what about you?

In this episode I would like to share with you my letter to my own inner critic. While our critics may say different words, the sentiment is always the same and it’s time for them to go….

We do not have to tolerate condemnation in our lives, that only comes from one place and there is no more room for it in our hearts and lives as believers.

When the Accuser comes he will say how weak and how nothing we are and we don’t have to whine and wonder underneath that, who cares if we are all those things anyway? We don’t need our strength, we need His. We don’t need our ability, we need His. We don’t need to be awesome or brave or strong enough when we know that when show up desperate and empty He fills us with Himself until we can overflow onto others.

Nothing in ourselves, everything in Christ.

Let His Words speak louder to us!

6- What are the fears that hold you back?

What are some of your common fears?

One of mine? Heights! Or maybe is it really getting hurt? I don’t know, maybe both. It seems to get weirder as I get older and the consequences of what that fear come to life could actually mean. I sit down on tall edges I have to make my way down instead of just jumping, I move my body to the center of the car when we’re driving precariously close to the edge of a mountain (as if that makes any difference at all).

Fears come in all shapes and sizes and although there are many things we could fear in this life, the fears we want to talk about today are the ones that hold us back from things God might be calling us to do. It could be anything from restoring a relationship, to writing that book, to starting that business, what is holding you back?

Just like me, we think leaning into the middle of the car will help us be safe, but it’s just an illusion, it makes us feel better in the moment but it’s not helping at all. We do have life experience that has hurt us and we, as human beings, generally want to avoid anything that could cause us pain or make us feel uncomfortable. We like safe and predictable. We might be bored, stuck, and even frustrated as we see others jump towards their thing but we aren’t so sure we are willing to give up “safe” for the risk.

The Lord knows how hard it is to be courageous. When Joshua takes over for Moses and God puts him in charge of leading the Israelites into the promise land He tells him over and over again to be strong and courageous, to not be frightened. If Joshua simply spent too much time comparing himself to Moses or recounting how the people responded the last time he came back and told them they should take the land, well he wouldn’t have gotten very far.

Let’s not try and excuse ourselves from what it is God is calling us to by saying things that sound super spiritual to ourselves like we’re trying to remain humble or waiting on God. While both those things are good and important, there also comes a time to get out there and start moving toward the thing that God is calling you to. That might not mean stepping on a stage, but it might mean talking to that neighbor, pursuing reconciliation, or daring to believe that the dream you see in your heart, might actually be from God. We don’t love and serve our dreams, but what if they really are God and we are so scared we might be wrong and people will point that out to us, that we never try? We will be in blatant disobedience to God Almighty.

In 2 Timothy 1:7 it says, “For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power and love and of a sound mind.”

So what if you fail? What then? What if you get it wrong and spend time building something or working towards something that wasn’t “the thing”. When our hearts are surrendered to God (and we know when they are or not) we know that He will work all those things for His glory. The big thing is to remember this isn’t about us looking good, being fabulous, famous or being right about our own call, this is all about a faith that say, “I”m not sure but He is worthy of trying.”

5- Identity. God knew who He was getting when He chose you.

I say it all the time, maybe even too often, I love Peter from the Bible. Maybe the reason I love him so much is because I often wonder to myself how God could want or use someone as emotional, over analytical, or messed up as me, and then I think….Oh yeah, Peter.

You have to wonder if anyone wanted to run up to Jesus after He chose Peter and give him a little disclaimer on the guy. “Listen Jesus, just so you know, you might want to rethink your choice there with Peter. He is a bit of a loose cannon, pretty bossy, thinks he is way smarter than he is, always speaks before he thinks and an overall flight risk.

I also have to wonder if Jesus might have responded by walking away with a half smile on his face thinking, “perfect”. Jesus didn’t choose Peter because he was perfect but because he was willing, He knew this man had a heart that would be willing to surrender again and again to Him.

Peter went on to betray Jesus and weep over his grief and lack. Why did Jesus allow this? Why does He allow it in our lives? I would propose that it is because He has to allow us to understand where our strength ends, even in our best intentions, and where His begins.

Jesus restores Peter on the beach not by reprimanding him or guilt him but by asking him a question, one He asks us as well, “Do you love me?”

This is the only thing that really matters. Even when we fail and walk through cleansing and sifting Jesus chose us because He knew what our hearts would answer, “YES!” His response, “feed my sheep!”

After Jesus’ resurrection and the Holy Spirit came, Peter was never referred to as Simon again. He was made new.

Do it for us too Lord! Restore our hearts, set us on fire for you, let us run wildly in love with you as we go to feed your sheep!

4- How to Handle Comparison

No matter how we tackle this issue of comparison on the surface it is so vital that we do some digging and ask ourselves what is at the root of this problem? Who are the people who really seem to trigger us? What is it about them? Why do we think that is? Instead of just feeling the feelings and jumping into our coping mechanisms, unearth the pain that comes up and where it may reside in our hearts. What is the belief we have bought about our unworthiness? Has this woman actually intended to make us feel this way, is it really her fault, or is it something I have yet to let Jesus have full access to in my brokenness?

We believe somewhere deep down, sometimes greater in one season than another, that we are not acceptable, lovable, worthy. I don’t know about you but I assume people are going to be as mean to me as I am to myself and so building walls , judging other, pushing others away, seems much safer. Like an exposed nerve we react than daring to hold still and saying, “even right now, even in my lack, even when my heart hurts so bad and I don’t feel like I have anything to offer, please help me receive your love.” When we dig to the bottom and we find what is underneath the pain we experience in comparison we find that other people often have little to do with what it is we’re truly struggling with.

We may continue to struggle with this, but we can put some things in place to help us fight against it. One thing we can do is learn how to define for ourselves what we call “SUCCESS”. If we think whatever someone else is doing is what we have to do in order to be successful we will always struggle and always feel like we aren’t measuring up but we can re frame our thinking, take our thoughts captive and put on the mind of Christ. Maybe for us, success is that our children are joyful and feel secure? Maybe it’s getting three workouts done in a week? Maybe it’s getting a date night with our husband or spending good, quality time with the Lord in His Word and worshiping Him. Maybe our success is too ambiguous and so we’re always seeming to reach for something, but it’s not even really what we want. What is it that God, not our society defines as successful?

In John 21 we see Peter being restored by Jesus and Him prophesying to Peter all the things that He would suffer for Jesus’ sake. We see John saunter up and Peter asks the Lord, “What about him?” Jesus answers him as He answers us, “What is that to you? You must follow me.” The only one we can be responsible for how they followed Jesus, is ourselves. Keep following Him bravely!

3 - Accepting the Seasons We're In

Just like our calendar year, our lives have seasons. Many times we want to hurry them along or make them last forever, but every season that we find ourselves in has it’s purpose.

If you’re anything like me, I want to be enjoying that harvest time, all the time, but we know just by observing the world around us that this is just not realistic. It’s so easy to get frustrated because our seasons that are planting, or pruning, or waiting, are a lot longer than we would like them to be. But just like the trees, or the land, we go through cycles and each one must precede the next in order for the process to be complete.

Where are we in our season? We can ask the question, “ how can I cooperate with what you want to do in my life while I am here, Lord?” We have to trust in each part and purpose that this season holds. The breakthrough is such a small part in all the growing process, but of this we can be sure, just because we can’t see what is happening doesn’t mean nothing is.

In Galatians 6:9 it says, “Let us not grow weary in doing good. For in due season we will reap, if we do not give up!” Don’t give up! No matter how hard this season is, don’t give up.

In my life, being a mom of little babies, was one of those seasons that many times felt like a time that moved as slow as molasses. My days were filled with wiping bodily fluids or fixing another meal. I had dreams and desires to write something, create something, pursue this “call” I felt on my life but I found myself frustrated. I hadn’t gotten the call wrong, it just wasn’t the season yet. My children were a part of my learning season, what God was teaching me doing the dishes and giving baths in the every day mundane was teaching me things I could learn no other way, teaching me what selflessness really means to serve someone over and over again out of love alone.

Maybe the wait is long because there is much fruit He wants to bring from your life? He is preparing us to be able to sustain in character what He wants to produce through us. Will we wait on His timing? We want to be people who are so rooted in Christ, so committed to the way He does things, that our fruit remains continuous for years to come.

2 - What am I called to?

So, what are you called to do?

In this episode we will start with some examples from Scripture. Moses was called by God through a burning bush (wouldn’t that be nice for some clarity) to lead his people out of slavery. We know David was called to become king, Joseph was called to be a point of salvation for his family, and in his story, he came to that place by no means that he would have chosen. This is something we can keep in mind about our callings, that God might have a specific plan of how He wants to use us in His Kingdom, but it might not match the pathway we might have come up with for ourselves.

Our dreams that the Lord may give us in our hearts may point us in the direction that He intends us to go, but the trajectory of calling is not this climb to some height of success and pinnacle we think we are supposed to head towards, but in fact God will may take us all kinds of detours to get us ready for that place.

Every single one of our callings has one goal, point people to Jesus.

In the details of knowing with more clarity however where you were born to run with power there are a few things we might ask ourselves such as…. (print out the entire “What am I called to” workbook here)

What are my spiritual gifts?
What ministries have you served in in the past that you have really enjoyed?
What ministries that you have been apart of has made the biggest impact on you? On others?
What people groups do you love?
What has God helped you overcome?
What are your natural strengths and skills?
What topics get you fired up?
What is your personality like?

God doesn’t need another version of someone else, He needs the one and only you. God is a creative God and He wants full creative license to do with our lives exactly what He wants. Open hands, all in.

He is always for us, it’s not a big mystery, He is for you and He desires greatly to use YOU just as you are, to build His kingdom. What are you waiting for? Get building!

1 - Meet Ashley & Why "Called to Build"

In this first episode I want to share a little bit about my own journey and what it has been like to pursue what I feel God has called me to do. I don’t want to give you the impression that I have in some way “arrived” because that is certainly not the case! I am still always really trying to trust God, never knowing exactly which direction He might want me to go.

I have not always been confident in this “calling”. More than anything it was this underlying feeling I had to use my story and gifts to help build God’s Kingdom, but more often than not I struggled with huge fears. Fears that serving Christ in this way was somehow a disappointment to Him, that I was self-deceived, that somehow I was always getting it wrong. The mocking laugh that you might know all too well that says, “And who do you think you are?” was always sitting there, waiting for me. Over time I was so sick and tired of these things holding me back and I would wrestle them out with the Lord. One by one He helped me face these fears, what drove them and where they were rooted in order to start move forward. We’re still in that march in one way or another to this day.

The reason I wanted to start this podcast is because over all this time I have done so much research and God has done so much work in me, that once again I want to share in hopes that it might help someone get through more directly, rather than circling the stupid mountain endlessly like I did. I want to help you with the inner things and I want to share what I know about the practical things I have learned a long the way; from blogging, to graphic design, Instagram, to …hey, even starting a podcast!

I want to talk about comparison and authenticity, mental health, judging others, or what about, letting our calling become an idol in our lives? Saying we are called to do something sounds so simple, but often we have a hard time connecting those dots on how to get from where we are now, to that thing, whatever it might be and I am hoping this podcast will be a place that will help with that.

When we hear the parable of the talents this seems to be the question that Jesus is asking of all of us. “Here this what I have given you, now…what are you going to do with it?” I don’t want to get to the end of my life and find myself telling God all kinds of excuses like, “But God, I didn’t have enough money”, “but God I was never 100% sure”, “but God, not everyone was OK with it and actually a lot of people thought it was super weird”. God’s not going to say, “Oh OK then”. He is going to respond like He did in the parable to the man who was unfaithful with what he had been given. The man was scared and so buried it and the master calls him a wicked servant and takes what he had been given and gives it to someone who had taken steps of faith to do something with it.

Listen, I don’t have to be Beth Moore, but I do have to be Ashley, and you don’t have to be anyone else but you do have to be yourself and walk in all of who God made YOU! We won’t know what is the next thing God might have for us if we don’t take the risk of stepping into the obedience of the thing right in front of us. It won’t be easy, it won’t be fast, but we can do it with God’s help and the boldness of the faith He has given us.
