Welcome to another episode of Reckless A-Talk, our TTRPG interview show where we sit down with some of our favorite writers, players, GMs, and streamers to get to know a little bit more about what makes them who they are.

I am as always your host GM Nathan I use he/him pronouns, and this week we got to talk to the amazing game designer and artistic person in general Viditya Voleti.

He is a game design educator who has been releasing games for several years now as both a prolific indie designer and freelancer for places like Paizo, Possum Creek Games, Evil Hat Productions, and tons more.

He is also a very fun, funny, and thoughtful former art student whose preferred genre of game appears to be “all of them.”

All this wrapped up into a really fascinating and inspirational and aspirational conversation about learning to fail, knowing who you are making games for, the concept of artistic studies in game design, and I think most crucially the attitude that when you make something, you’re always taking a step forward.

His latest game, A Land Once Magic, is a worldbuilding deck and conversation piece that is crowdfunding right now.

Hello listeners! Welcome to another episode of Reckless A-Talk, our TTRPG interview show where we sit down with some of our favorite writers, players, GMs, and streamers to get to know a little bit more about what makes them who they are.

I am as always your host GM Nathan, I use he/him pronouns, and this week I got to expand my mind and laugh a lot with renowned game designer Spencer Campbell of Gila RPGs!

That name is possibly familiar to longtime Reckless A-Talk listeners, as he and his games have been listed as a huge inspirations for several of our guests.

Spencer is a design whirlwind, and has put out several really diverse, unique, and award-winning games over the last few years. That includes the punchy LUMEN system and Creator Kit, HUNT a game about a doomed knightly order going on a final quest, the monster hunting game SLAYERS, and the solo souls-like game REAP.

Seriously, that’s just a portion of what he’s written, and SO MANY of them take really novel approaches with what is fun about games. Sometimes there’s no dice, no health, loot pools, approaches instead of skills, all kinds of really good stuff that we get to talk about in this episode.

Plus we talk a lot about the importance of connection in the TTRPG space, trying to protect your sanity online, his background in cognitive psychology and, as usual, tons more.

He has performed in, produced for and written a ton of diverse projects over the last few years, including stints on My First Dungeon, Unprepared Casters, and the recently concluded Planet Arcana miniseries A Fool’s Errand. They’ve also written on several tabletop projects, including an adventure for the Dr. Who Roleplaying Game, Fat Magic, and the Deimos Academy.

AND they are an accomplished producer, putting together the genuinely excellent Beyond the Brook miniseries, among - and stop me if you’ve heard this before - many, many other cool projects.

They are so wonderfully open combating social anxiety and the power of compliments, the essential skill of asking for help, and finding playground joy with your friends.

I am as always your host GM Nathan I use he/him pronouns, and I am so happy to present to you this frankly long overdue, very inspirational and very fun interview with game designer and shitpost legend and marketing extraordinaire Lex from TitanomachyRPG.

We talk about this a little during the actual episode, but Lex started a little ahead of us in the tabletop gaming space, and was always someone I personally looked up to. Super creative, hardworking, consistent, and generally generous with their time and expertise. Plus, incredibly funny and thoughtful.

Lex has designed many games across a variety of genres and systems, but they are probably best known for their Caltrop Core System Reference Document or SRD.

As of last count at the publishing of this episode, more than 230 games have been published through Caltrop Core and the document has been downloaded more than 2000 times.

In this episode, we talk about Caltrop Core, but also about self-expression, depression, perseverance, the importance of failure and growth, and shitposting.

I am as always your host GM Nathan, and I’m so excited to be back for our first full episode of 2024, PARTICULARLY with this wonderful and DARE I SAY NEWSWORTHY interview.

I got to once again be a huge nerd about tabletop games AND about journalism, as I got to enjoy a very fun, very thought-provoking chat with co-founder of TTRPG news outlet Rascal Rowan Zeoli.

Rowan is one of the big, independent news voices in the space, with phenomenal work done particularly in the review and interview spheres. In this episode, we talk a lot about her experiences doing both for Rascal, a new independent, reader-supported, worker-owned outlet covering tabletop games and shows. But we also talk a lot about identity, creativity, the twists and turns of life, collaborative critique, and what journalism as a service means.

Most interestingly and refreshingly, we talked a LOT about the importance of news coverage and critical review in the tabletop and actual play world.

Rowan just has some really wonderful perspectives and is so clearly a very thoughtful AND funny person, so this was frankly a very easy interview to conduct because talking to cool people is easy and good and fun turns out.

Before I throw you to the episode, I want to do a small appeal to everyone listening. I was a hyper-local journalist for many years, and I cannot stress enough how important I personally believe small outlet journalism is to the world. Please find outlets in your hometowns, outlets that cover things you care about, and other people doing the hard work of shining a spotlight where there is darkness. And then, if you’re able, pay them money to keep doing what they’re doing, or at least subscribe to newsletters and otherwise vote with your dollars and attention.

The two are are prolific, creating homebrew tabletop subsystem and magic item offerings for D&D, Pathfinder and more, which are usually designed and promoted by Matthew and beautifully illustrated by Fernando. They have collaborated with a ton of big names including recently participating in Paizo Con. Most illustriously, of course, their work has even appeared right here on Reckless Attack, as we used the Campfire travel system during one of our adventures.

In this episode, we talk about partnership, knowing what you want out of a project, cutting through the noise, failing fast and failing better, finding and fixing problems (and selling the solutions), and painting the best rock you can paint.

I am excited to get to play interviewer to a fellow interviewer this week, as I sit down with podcast host, editor, game designer and quality individual Navaar Seik-Jackson.

Navaar started his first show, the excellent and conversational interview offering the Secret Nerd Podcast, just a bit before we started Reckless Attack, and the show has grown from interviewing a handful of friends all the way to some of the biggest names in the TTRPG space over more than 90 episodes (as of this release).

Since then, Navaar has branched into game design with his zombie apocalypse TTRPG The Corrupted, a Last of Us podcast Escape the Dark, helped host Pathfinder news and discussion podcast Know Direction, and is one of the players on the brand new Star Wars Pathfinder 2e show Unwavering Force.

Navaar is, in short, a busy guy.

But he is also a truly lovely guy.

Will is an excellent performer, storyteller and presence on his channel and in the TTRPG sphere. He is notably very present in his performances, and makes storytelling, player empowerment and evocative character portrayals look easy.

We have long appreciated the work their channel does for charity - encouraging people to donate directly to nonprofits they fundraise for and not compensate them at all - as well as their perspectives on a wide number of things, particularly in creating art here in late stage capitalism.

Long story short, Will is an absolute joy of a person and one of my favorites, and this conversation was a joy as well.
