The Rebels stifled Texas in an opening-round win. Georgia entered with the third-highest scoring offense in the nation. The Bulldogs fought back from a 23-point deficit with a 22-2 run. However, Ole Miss held them to their lowest point total and field goal percentage in a first half this year in what was ultimately a 76-72 win.

On3’s Brett McMurphy reported earlier this week the Detroit-based bowl was shutting its doors, ending a 29-year run. It debuted as the Motor City Bowl, rebranded as the Little Caesars Bowl in 2009, shifted to the Quick Lane Bowl in 2014 and finally the GameAbove Sports Bowl in 2024.

The bowl’s inaugural matchup — on the day after Christmas — was Ole Miss against Randy-Moss-led Marshall, the Mid-American Conference champion. 

The Rebels won, 34-31, including a game-sealing strip of Moss by linebacker Broc Kreitz.

Cleveland, Mississippi-based lawyer John Cox contributed to the Spirit’s ‘Talk of Champions’ podcast for nearly the entirety — including joining Sudu Upadhyay shortly after the ruling came down.

“You would assume [the NCAA] is going to appeal,” Cox said, in the included 22-minute explainer. “Eventually it’s going to go up to the Mississippi Supreme Court. The standard is manifest error — whether or not it’s a complete misapplication of the law. That’s why it was important to win this one.

“Judge [Robert] Whitwell was very good during the hearing of explaining that the facts of this case are different than the facts of every other case. The Alabama case, that was apples to pizza. 

“As far as the long-term, if you’re willing to fight the NCAA in a court of law, you’ve got a very good shot right now. Their rules are not set up to win in court the way they’re applying them right now.”

The Rebels are a week away from their rematch with Georgia. The teams are meeting in the second round of the College Football Playoff. Kickoff of the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans is set for New Year’s Day at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN.

The former ESPN analyst is among the greatest players in school history. Kirby Smart and Co. have been one of the sport’s standard-bearers of the 2020s, including national titles in 2021 and 2022. 

The methods behind their success aren’t under lock and key, either. The Bulldogs make no secret of how they plan to attack their opponents, and Ole Miss is next in the Sugar Bowl. Pollack explains in an all-new podcast with the Ole Miss Spirit's Brad Logan.

Golding will be making his head coaching debut on Saturday. The 6-seed Rebels (11-1) host 11-seed Tulane (11-2) at 2:30 p.m. CT on TNT/HBO Max.

But Carter and the Rebels aren’t stopping there. The university last week issued a request for proposal for a mixed-use development around the stadium similar in concept to The Battery Atlanta. The Battery surrounds Truist Park, the home of MLB’s Atlanta Braves. 

The Ole Miss iteration would feature retail, restaurants, office space, a hotel and even condos. Carter said the Rebels are exploring refurbishments to the stadium itself as well.

Carter joined the Ole Miss Spirit’s Brad Logan for an extensive interview. Carter also touched on the SEC going to nine conference games in football, opening 2026 against Louisville, the hiring of Pete Golding and much, much more. 

The pair was among the players who visited with local media to open game week for the College Football Playoff. Chambliss said he’d consider all possibilities should he receive a waiver from the NCAA for an additional season of eligibility. 

A phone call circulated on social media last week of now-former Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin claiming running backs coach Kevin Smith and Lacy, the Rebels’ star running back, would be following him to LSU.

The 6-seed Rebels (11-1) take on the 11-seed Green Wave in the first round of the College Football Playoff at 2:30 p.m. CT on TNT/HBO Max. They’ll be playing their first game without Lane Kiffin as head coach. Ole Miss defeated Tulane, 45-10, in the regular season.

But a lot has changed. Jon Sumrall will leave for Florida after the postseason. Ole Miss is now led by Pete Golding after Kiffin left for SEC rival LSU two weeks ago. 

Golding was Ole Miss defensive coordinator the last three seasons and will continue to call plays.

“I can't imagine any other feeling for them other than, ‘We’re out to prove everybody wrong,’ essentially,” Upadhyay said in a. Sit-down with fellow Ole Miss Spirit contributor Brad Logan.

Golding took over for Lane Kiffin, who left for LSU. As a result, he’s been tasked with preparing Ole Miss for the College Football Playoff, all while recruiting, building out his staff and preparing for the transfer portal opening in January. 

Golding will eventually have to find long-term solutions for wide receivers coach, tight ends coach, linebackers coach and likely running backs coach — assuming Kevin Smith, as expected, leaves following the playoff run. 

Bradley Sowell, though, agrees with Golding’s approach, which is focusing exclusively on the title run. The 6-seed Rebels host 11-seed Tulane on December 20 in Oxford.

Golding on Tuesday named John David Baker as the Rebels’ new offensive coordinator. In today’s episode of Game Runs Deep, Sudu Upadhyay and Ben Garrett break down why JDB was the right hire, the Lane-Kiffin-like scheme he’s bringing to Oxford and more.

All are expected to head back to Baton Rouge after the postseason is over, whether that’s in a couple of weeks or next month, including offensive coordinator Charlie Weis. 

ESPN analyst Cole Cubelic doesn’t love the move from a locker room standpoint.

“My only concern was, if I was a player, I’d be like, ‘Nah, you left. We’ll make it. We’ll be OK,’” Cubelic said Tuesday on McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning, which he hosts with former Alabama quarterback and ESPN personality Greg McElroy.

The pair have been friends since Golding was 18-years-old. Cox was with Golding at Delta State. He was a sounding board if Golding needed it during one of the most chaotic coaching exits in college football history. 

Suffice to say, Golding has Cox’s full support and belief. The No. 6-ranked Rebels (11-1) are off this week but return to practice on Monday to prepare for the postseason. 

Ole Miss is poised to host a first-round College Football Playoff game in two weeks.

There’s a difference with Pete Golding, the third-year Rebel defensive coordinator, who’s taken over for Lane Kiffin as Ole Miss head coach. Kiffin left the No. 6 and 11-1 Rebels for SEC rival LSU.

The Rebels have interest in a reunion with Austin Thomas, among others. However, for the time being, they’ve had to make it work with the people actually in the building, including a shift in focus for Matt McLaughlin. 

McLaughlin serves as Ole Miss senior associate athletics director for strategy and cap management. He and Walker Jones, who heads up the Grove Collective, have taken up temporary offices at the Manning Center to lead the roster-building efforts in lieu of an interim general manager. 

Ole Miss signed 17 2026 recruits on Wednesday, the first of the Early Signing Period. The Rebels have room to add, too — then comes the NCAA Transfer Portal in January.

No. 7 Ole Miss has had to deal with daily rumors for over a week on the future of sixth-year head coach Lane Kiffin. Kiffin is the top candidate for openings at LSU and Florida.

Lebby was Kiffin’s first offensive coordinator at Ole Miss. Years later he’s wrapping his second season leading the Bulldogs. On3 Mississippi State reporter Robbie Faulk believes this year’s edition of the annual rivalry matchup is critical for Lebby’s outlook in Starkville moving forward.

What did we learn? Nothing new, actually, other than Kiffin is dismissing any kind of ultimatum for him from Ole Miss athletics director Keith Carter and Co.

Rebel fans can’t even enjoy it, because sixth-year head coach Lane Kiffin refuses to say whether he’s staying or leaving at season’s end. 

Florida has been after Kiffin for weeks, while LSU has ramped up its pursuit of Kiffin in the last few days. Planes are being tracked and reports of an Ole Miss decision deadline (no later than the Egg Bowl) have made Kiffin and the Rebels the talk of the sport over their bye week.

But he’s also tired of the entire conversation. 

Why? Well, the Rebels are 9-1 for the first time in 63 years. They’re barreling towards the College Football Playoff and single-digit wins away from their first national title since the 60s.

Lacy, who’s broken out as a true sophomore for the Rebels, tied the single-season Ole Miss record for rushing touchdowns (16). One more and he’ll surpass Quinshon Judkins, who set the new mark as a true freshman in 2022.

But, so far, the Rebels are showing no signs of a repeating history. While those Rebels lost four of their last five, Ole Miss has won back-to-back games (and its first of November) following the Rebels’ only loss of the season at Georgia. 

Kiffin, the fastest Ole Miss coach to 50 wins in history, is a leading candidate for openings at both Florida and LSU. Sources indicate Florida is far and away the biggest threat of the two. 

Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz is the betting favorite for the Florida job, according to Bet Online. Tulane’s Jon Sumrall is the betting favorite for LSU.

However, Barnhart told Ole Miss Spirit contributor Brad Logan that Kiffin’s decision may be tougher than most realize given the unique situation he’s built in Oxford.

No. 7 Ole Miss (7-1, 4-1 SEC) hosts South Carolina (3-5, 1-5) Saturday at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN. Kiffin isn’t the only coach in the game dealing with silly-season rumors.

There are plenty of helmet stickers to hand out, including a standout performance by Princewill Umanmielen, who finished with six tackles, 1.5 sacks and two tackles for loss. Reserve tight end Trace Bruckler came through with a touchdown catch and arguably the play of the game with his special teams forced fumble in the fourth quarter. 

Trinidad Chambliss finished 24 for 44 for 315 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. He added 53 rushing yards on 12 carries. Chambliss completed passes to eight different receivers. True freshman Winston Watkins led all pass-catchers with a team-high 111 yards. Harrison Wallace had five catches for 64 yards and Cayden Lee added three catches for 60 yards. 

Sophomore running back Kewan Lacy went for 78 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries. Ole Miss capped a two-game road trip and now hosts three straight opponents in Oxford. 

First is South Carolina on November 1 at a kickoff time yet to be determined.

Knox, a sophomore for Oxford (Mississippi) High School, replaced injured starting quarterback Drew Dean last Friday against Germantown. The Chargers trailed by two touchdowns. Knox brought them all the way back, including the game-winning two-point conversion, in a 43-42 win.

The Rebels (6-1, 3-1 SEC) and Sooners (6-1, 2-1) kick off in Norman on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT on ABC. Knox will make the trip, but only after the Chargers hit the road themselves, only to Clinton.

The school has ‘got some things cooking’ for the final run, according to Drew Ingraham, Ole Miss senior associate athletics director for external engagement. Ingraham joined Ole Miss Spirit contributor Brad Logan for a podcast on Thursday.

Plus, Ole Miss basketball is also set to open on November 3. The Rebels are entering their third season under head coach Chris Beard. They won 24 games a year ago and matched the program’s greatest single-season accomplishment by reaching the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

A pair of 4-star in-state targets for the 2026 class, safety Bralan Womack and wide receiver Jase Mathews, are visiting LSU this weekend. Cornerback Braylon Edwards, a high school teammate of 4-star Ole Miss EDGE commit Landon Barnes, just de-committed from SMU. Plus, some early transfer targets have quickly emerged. 

Put simply, there could be some real movement on the way on all recruiting fronts, as long as Lane Kiffin rumors don’t get in the way.

Lastly, No. 8 Ole Miss (6-1, 3-1 SEC) is at No. 13 Oklahoma (6-1, 2-1) on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT on ABC. Ben and Zach are each picking the Rebels in a tight one.

Whatever he comes up with won’t be without Ole Miss doing all it can to keep him.

The Rebels are at Oklahoma on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT for a Top 15 matchup on ABC. Ole Miss is hoping to avoid another 2022-level letdown, especially amid more rumor mill distractions. 

However, at the same time, the Rebels, administratively, are ready to battle all comers when it comes to keeping Kiffin in Oxford. 

Ole Miss has proven a perfect fit for Kiffin and his family, while few, if any, programs have been more efficient and front-leading in the NIL space than the Rebels. 

As far as actual game matters, Ole Miss, against the Sooners, will be tested by the toughest defense it’s faced so far. Ben and Brandon each give three reasons why Rebels and the Sooners come out with a win. The teams are in the second of six straight seasons playing one another.

Speaking of Kiffin, an already-unprecedented coaching carousel could add more high profile jobs after Week 8’s slate of games, specifically Florida and Mississippi State. Kiffin is inarguably one of, if not the top, coaching candidates around. 

Sources tell the Ole Miss Spirit Kiffin’s agent, Jimmy Sexton, is angling to make Kiffin the highest-paid coach in college football. Penn State is already open. LSU could be a possibility. What about Steve Sarkisian at Texas? 

Sowell doesn’t believe Kiffin, who’s in his sixth Ole Miss season, is going anywhere.

No. 4 Ole Miss (5-0, 3-0 SEC) is off this week but returns to host Washington State on October 11. Sowell believes the Rebels have staying power after their statement win over rival LSU on Saturday.

The Rebels landed Perry, formerly of Kentucky, as part of a transfer portal class ranked Top 20 in the country by On3.

Holloway was announced this week as a member of the Rebels’ new play-by-play team with Gary Darby beginning with the 2025-26 season. 

Holloway is the program’s all-time leading rebounder. He helped lead the Rebels to a 2013 SEC Tournament title and an NCAA Tournament berth. Ole Miss took down 5-seed Wisconsin in the first round.
