In this conversation for our OneCare Mission Month, our Missions Pastor Carly Cassidy welcomes Adam and Kate Honeybun home from Cambodia, where they serve with Pioneers at Hope International School in Phnom Penh.

Their journey began with what Adam calls a "silly prayer" and a string of open doors that moved their whole family across the world. But the real challenge of their story is closer to home: God uses ordinary skills and everyday jobs for his mission, and the question for all of us is simply, "who are you loving that is right next to you?" The Cross as Victory

In this view, Christ’s death on the Cross was a decisive blow against the powers of darkness, stripping them of authority (though not of power), and removing them from a position of ruling over the world, which they held from the time of Adam. This is similar to the ransom view, but is very much focussed on how the cross dethrones the powers, rather than on what Christ did to set individuals at liberty. The key text is Colossians 2, but there are many others. Here the Cross is simultaneously Christ’s greatest defeat and his greatest victory; His greatest humiliation and his greatest triumph. How can the Cross of Christ still make sense of the suffering, injustice, and death we still see in the world? Why does it still look very much like the demonic powers are in charge?

This is probably the best known of all the perspectives on the Cross. It is sometimes called: Penal Substitutionary Atonement (PSA). PSA says that the death of Jesus is a sacrifice which satisfies the justice of God, his righteous wrath against our sin, which means that the penalty of death that should be on us, is transferred to Jesus. His blood pays the just penalty of our sin, by standing in as the perfect and complete substitution for us and on our behalf. This sermon will need to address why such a payment from God to God, would need to be paid. Why couldn’t God just forgive us? Why is a such a violent and horrible death necessary? In what way is this different to the Old Testament animal sacrifices?

Week 1: The Cross As Ransom

This is one of the ‘oldest’ perspectives on the meaning of the Cross. In this view, Jesus is a ransom paid to secure our freedom from slavery to sin, death, and the devil. At the very moment of Jesus death, his last words are ‘it is finished.’ This is ‘tetelestai’ in Greek, which is an economic term meaning ‘paid in full.’ The debt is paid, the ransom is paid, so we can go free. In this sermon we will explore what the debt/ransom payment is, why it is necessary, to whom it is paid, and how the cross pays that ransom in full.
