Truck Drivers need more parking! STOP the fines! Stop towing and harassing us!

Truck Drivers are being FINED for parking on the ramps of highways, or outside along a rest area off the highways. Since Covid, rest areas are being closed and blocked off causing even more of a problem than ever before for parking. Before Covid, this parking issue has been a problem old school truck drivers state, "for over 30 years." Open the rest area parking lots that were closed, just for parking would be better than issuing a driver a FINE. Some states are installing no parking signs and poles to block semis from parking on ramps.

Walmart has been installing clearances and bumpers to prevent semis from entering. They have also been known to tow away and give a ticket if you park there. Some Walmart stores will allow you to come but only to shop and have to immediately leave. Also, if you don't finish your day by 12 to 2pm to get to a truck stop you won't find parking, even $30 a day parking is full most places now. You can't always stop your day at these times, again because of shippers and receivers etc. 

I'm calling out to police officers, you know and admitted many times you understand what truckers are going through and see we don't have enough parking, yet will still issue a FINE hurting our license and putting our livelihood at risk but also leaving America with one less driver if something happens to our license. To be woken up on our sleep time which could be dangerous to wake us and make us move, and where are you having us move? If we could have made it clock wise or found safer parking trust me we would have done it. Last thing a truck driver wants or needs is to be woken up and hit with a FINE. PLEASE HELP US like we helped support you, police officers. Stop the fines against truckers when it comes to parking situations. I know you have better things to do like cleaning up the streets with TONS of criminals taking over than to bother a hard working trucker who brings America their food and supplies. 

America, we can do better for our truck drivers. Please unite and come together so after a long day a trucker can simply just get some sleep knowing they won't be bothered. If they are on the side of a highway they at least know they will no longer be punished and FINED. 

Small box trucks, and bobtails need to double up together in a spot, taking one large spot is ridiculous. Rv and everyone else parking in semi spots please sign because the government isn't accounting for all these others parking in these spots they think we have enough parking when it's not just semis parking in these spots anymore. 

I also have another petition for truckers being allowed to carry nationwide that live on the road. Please go sign and share both petitions to your Facebook, friends and family! Thank you!

# 1-   PILOT and FLYING J TRYING OUT CHINESE SQUAT POTTIES

Squat toilets still reign supreme in China. Sure, the "western" toilet has made plenty of inroads, and you'll find them in big city hotels, major restaurants, and airports around the country. However, there are still lots and lots of "squatty potties" in China, and now starting to debut in the US. Pilot and Flying J are getting on board with this new trend in 150 random locations on the west coast. But don't fear! Using a squat toilet is simple. There are a few tricks to the trade, but with a little preparation, you'll be able to do your business with confidence.

Squat Toilets Defined

Using a squat toilet is a little like peeing in the woods, only with walls, a door (sometimes), and a ceramic hole in the ground that flushes. Sometimes .Supposedly using squat toilets is good for your system. The mechanics are just as their title implies. By squatting to do your business rather than sitting on a toilet, gravity helps the process.

Being Prepared to Squat

Preparation is key. While adapting to squat toilets is not as hard as it seems, it's good to know what you're getting into before you (have to) go.

The Moment of Truth

Some washrooms  can be rather wet. Whether from the splash effect or an overeager toilet cleaner running amok with a mop, your squat toilet stall floor might endanger your bags or dry trousers. If it's looking wet, roll your pants up. Pro tip: if you see other people  rolling up their cuffs, be sure to do so too. They know something you don't. 

  Positioning Yourself

Once you've found yourself in a squatty potty, it's really not that bad. Many argue it's actually healthier to go this way than sitting down. But if you're not used to it, squatting can be really difficult if you don't know how to get into position, stay there, and use the toilet correctly.

• Face forward and try to let your pants down while ensuring that the ends aren't touching the floor (hopefully you've rolled your cuffs.) There are grooved places for your feet on either side of the toilet. Try to get somewhere in the middle, feet flat on the floor, and aim for the potty. Just like that.
• One key piece of etiquette: no paper into the potty. Chinese potties in public restrooms generally don't handle waste paper. If possible, put anything other than #1 or #2 in the trash basket. Try as hard as you can, though, NOT to look at the trash  basket, as it's usually open and teeming with things on which you'd rather not lay eyes.
• When finishing up, unroll your pants, wash your hands, and out you go, you accomplished squat toilet use.

Consider yourself warned.

The company spokesman for Pilot and Flying J said in an interview the 150 locations are experimental to get feedback from our patrons. Our main priorty is our customers. I know trying new things is always trial and error, but hoping we get positive feedback.

RACE HORSE DEVELOPS 3RD LUNG

FROM DOPING

The New York State Equine Racing Alliance has had many many or should we say a lot of doping cases over the years due to race horse owners always wanting to get that edge over their competitors. There's many lawsuits against a number of Doctors, suppliers, trainers,and owners. All these horses get tested regularly and are on a strict regimen to be examined by a vet. Well one horse that was being doped named BALZ DEEP, was being examined and the

 Vet noticed an odd sound when listening to this geldings chest. Worried there was a problem they had a chest X-ray which revealed a much smaller 3rd lung growing off of the horse's right lung about midway down. After some blood work they found a cocktail of doping. Normal doping usually contained amphetamines,or methamphetamines ( Ritalin).But this one had an almost lethal dose of EGH, EQUINE GROWTH HORMONE. That had mutated somehow, and formed the 3rd lung on this poor horse. This horse had been doped for the last 6 months, which gave time for the 3rd lung to form almost like a tumor. The owner of this gelding will have the animal operated on to remove the extra lung and then retire him. No legal action has been taken yet.

DUNKIN DONUTS SUING STARBUCKS

OVER PUMPKINSPICE CREATION

Canton, Massachusetts based DUNKIN DONUTS is starting a legal grudge with Seattle, Washington based STARBUCKS. I guess you can say East Coast against the West Coast Battle Royal!

 Filed October 1st of this year in a Massachusetts court, Dunkin Donuts claims Starbucks infringed on an ad campaign when they came out with their Pumpkin Spice Crunch moolatte.

The Seattle company claims they came out with the same thing the month before they did. Even though they had no advertising for this item till October 15th. The spokesman for Dunkin says, the coffee business is very cut throat and we will not stand for a blatten infrindgment of our product. A cease and desist order is filed for now till we get our day in court. Starbucks was not available for comment.

MAN RETURNS FROM VACATION

FINDS 2FT LONG WORM IN STOMACH

A Chino, California man, Gruber Deustenberg. Returned from a month long vacation from

Singapore, where he sampled all of the cuisine native to the area. There were many chicken dishes, crab, oysters, and fish heads. A noodle they made, some raw fish and other dishes. While there Mr, Deustenberg enjoyed them all while never feeling ill at all. Once back home he noticed he was hungry all the time and couldn't seem to put on any weight no matter what he would eat. He felt a sharp pain in his abdomen that was making him double over, so he finally decided to see a doctor. He went to the Canyon Ridge medical center where they took an x-ray and found a parasite in his stomach called a Lineus Longissimus or simply called a Boot worm.

They have been known to grow very quickly and the record length for a Boot worm was 180 ft.

He was lucky to get to the doctor when he did or there's no telling how big it would have gotten. He had surgery to remove the parasite instead of waiting to pass it since the parasite was so aggressive in drawing nutrients from its host. The operation went well and Mr,Deustenberg is making a full recovery. He was quoted saying no more raw food for him.

Personal Conveyance

Personal conveyance is the movement of a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) for personal use while off-duty. A driver may record time operating a CMV for personal conveyance as off-duty only when the driver is relieved from work and all responsibility for performing work by the motor carrier. The CMV may be used for personal conveyance even if it is laden, since the load is not being transported for the commercial benefit of the motor carrier at that time. Personal conveyance does not reduce a driver’s or motor carrier’s responsibility to operate a CMV safely. Motor carriers can establish personal conveyance limitations either within the scope of, or more restrictive than, the guidance provided here.

FMCSA updates the guidance for § 395.8 Driver’s Record of Duty Status to read as follows:

Question 26: Under what circumstances may a driver operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) as a personal conveyance?

Guidance: A driver may record time operating a CMV for personal conveyance (i.e., for personal use or reasons) as off-duty only when the driver is relieved from work and all responsibility for performing work by the motor carrier. The CMV may be used for personal conveyance even if it is laden, since the load is not being transported for the commercial benefit of the carrier at that time. Personal conveyance does not reduce a driver’s or motor carrier’s responsibility to operate a CMV safely. Motor carriers can establish personal conveyance limitations either within the scope of, or more restrictive than, this guidance, such as banning use of a CMV for personal conveyance purposes, imposing a distance limitation on personal conveyance, or prohibiting personal conveyance while the CMV is laden.

Examples of Appropriate Uses of a CMV While Off-duty for Personal Conveyance

The following are examples of appropriate uses of a CMV while off-duty for personal conveyance include, but are not limited to:

Time spent traveling from a driver’s en route lodging (such as a motel or truck stop) to restaurants and entertainment facilities.

Commuting between the driver’s terminal and his or her residence, between trailer-drop lots and the driver’s residence, and between work sites and his or her residence. In these scenarios, the commuting distance combined with the release from work and start to work times must allow the driver enough time to obtain the required restorative rest as to ensure the driver is not fatigued. 

Time spent traveling to a nearby, reasonable, safe location to obtain required rest after loading or unloading. The time driving under personal conveyance must allow the driver adequate time to obtain the required rest in accordance with minimum off-duty periods under 49 CFR 395.3(a)(1) (property-carrying vehicles) or 395.5(a) (passenger-carrying vehicles) before returning to on-duty driving, and the resting location must be the first such location reasonably available.

Moving a CMV at the request of a safety official during the driver’s off-duty time

Time spent traveling in a motorcoach without passengers to en route lodging (such as motel or truck stop), or to restaurants and entertainment facilities and back to the lodging. In this scenario, the driver of the motorcoach can claim personal conveyance provided the driver is off-duty. Other off-duty drivers may be on board the vehicle, and are not considered passengers.

Time spent transporting personal property while off-duty.

Authorized use of a CMV to travel home after working at an offsite location. 

Examples of Uses of a CMV that Would Not Qualify as Personal Conveyance

The following are examples of uses of a CMV that would not qualify as personal conveyance include, but are not limited to, the following:

The movement of a CMV in order to enhance the operational readiness of a motor carrier. For example, bypassing available resting locations in order to get closer to the next loading or unloading point or other scheduled motor carrier destination.

After delivering a towed unit, and the towing unit no longer meets the definition of a CMV, the driver returns to the point of origin under the direction of the motor carrier to pick up another towed unit.

Continuation of a CMV trip in interstate commerce in order to fulfill a business purpose, including bobtailing or operating with an empty trailer in order to retrieve another load or repositioning a CMV (tractor or trailer) at the direction of the motor carrier.

Time spent driving a passenger-carrying CMV while passenger(s) are on board. Off-duty drivers are not considered passengers when traveling to a common destination of their own choice within the scope of this guidance.  

Time spent transporting a CMV to a facility to have vehicle maintenance performed.

After being placed out of service for exceeding the maximum periods permitted under part 395, time spent driving to a location to obtain required rest, unless so directed by an enforcement officer at the scene.

Time spent traveling to a motor carrier’s terminal after loading or unloading from a shipper or a receiver.

Time spent operating a motorcoach when luggage is stowed, the passengers have disembarked and the driver has been directed to deliver the luggage.

Pileup involving 6 tractor trailers reported on Pennsylvania interstate

A major multi-vehicle crash was reported in Greenwich Township, Pennsylvania, on Friday morning.

The crash was reported around 7:30 a.m. at mile marker 35 on westbound I-78 in Berks County.

According to Pennsylvania State Police Trooper David Beohm, the crash involved six tractor trailers, one sedan, and a pickup pulling a horse trailer.

At least two people were injured in the crash.

Trooper Beohm said that the

no injuries to the horses in the trailer.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

NASCAR hauler involved in crash in Flagstaff

UPDATE: This story has been updated to include information provided by the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Las Vegas native and NASCAR driver Riley Herbst’s car hauler appears to have been involved in a crash on its way to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The hauler is operated by Stewart-Haas Racing.

In a video taken by Sprint Cup driver Spencer Hill the #98 hauler is seen leaning over half off a road. The cab of the truck is also seen in the video being dug into the dirt shoulder up against a barrier.

Hill wrote on Twitter, “Holy cow. Not good. The 98 Xfinity hauler was involved in a bad wreck in Flagstaff, AZ on Wednesday afternoon. Hopefully everyone involved is okay.”

8 News Now spoke with Hill Wednesday evening and he said the “driver of the hauler was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation. Co-driver is okay.”

Stewart-Haas Racing released the following statement on the incident, “Earlier today, the No. 98 NASCAR Xfinity Series Hauler of Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) was involved in a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 40 a few miles west of Flagstaff, Arizona. The truck had two occupants and neither was seriously injured, although one was taken to a local hospital for further treatment and observation. No other details regarding their respective conditions are available at this time.

“SHR can confirm that speed was not a factor in the crash. While the rig was damaged, the hauler and its contents appeared relatively unscathed. Plans are already underway for a new rig to hook up to the hauler and deliver it to Las Vegas Motor Speedway in time for Xfinity Series hauler parking at 10:30 a.m. PDT on Friday.”

A representative from the Arizona Department of Public Safety said that the driver of the tractor-trailer told investigators that he “fainted behind the wheel.” Officials say the driver was traveling at 75 miles per hour westbound on Interstate 40 before losing control of the truck and striking a guardrail.

“It doesn’t appear the vehicles were damaged but unknown on the damage to the truck,” said Bart Graves with the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Investigators say the driver was taken to a hospital for evaluation, and his condition is unknown. The roadway was closed for several hours, officials say.

DOCTORS FIND 55 BATTERIES IN WOMAN'S BODY

“HIGHEST REPORTED NUMBER EVER!”

Surgeons "milked" four of the cylinders from her colon to her rectum and then retrieved them from the anus.

The terms “emergency” and “AAA” typically connote a roadside incident. Certain doctors in Dublin, however, are unlikely to ever associate those terms with anything but a recent surgery during which they found dozens of batteries in a 66-year-old woman’s colon and stomach.

A report of the incident,published Thursday in the Irish Medical Journal, detailed the patient’s arrival at St. Vincent’s University Hospital, where an X-ray revealed the foreign objects in her body. Miraculously, none were obstructing her gastrointestinal tract,according to Live Science. Doctors initially decided to wait in hopes that she would pass the batteries out of her body naturally. Though she released five AA batteries in the first week, subsequent X-rays showed that most were still stuck inside — and the woman began experiencing abdominal pain.

After realizing that her distended stomach was hanging above the pubic bone due to the weight of the batteries, surgeons cut into her abdomen and successfully removed 46 of them.

Unfortunately for all involved, four additional batteries remained trapped in the colon. As described in the report, doctors “milked” them into her rectum to remove them from her anus. This brought the total amount of batteries she ingested — both AA and AAA — to a whopping 55.

“To the best of our knowledge, this case represents the highest reported number of batteries ingested at a single point in time,” the journal article said.

While the incident certainly inspired curious bafflement, the report reminded readers that the ingestion of batteries is a serious, albeit “unusual,” method of self-harm. Its authors noted that the act can cause severe issues, including “mucosal injury, perforation, [and] obstruction.”

“The potential of cylindrical batteries to result in acute surgical emergencies should not be underestimated,” the report stated.

Testicle Festival  Montana State Society Offers All The Balls You Can Eat

$20 Buys All The Bull Testicles You Can Eat And Whisky You Can Drink!

There's quite a deal being offered in DC this weekend, assuming you have the balls to stomach it. On Saturday night, roughly 500 people are expected to gather at the Arlington chapter of the American Legion for the 7th annual Montana State Society Testicle Festival - also known as 'Testy Fest.'

This juice frontier delicacy is a special joy for Northwestern folks living inside (or just beyond) the Beltway.

For just $20 ($25 at the door), the festival offers "all the Crown Royal you can drink and all the balls you can eat,” festival organizer Brittany Beauliue says.  Bull testicles, that is, also known as Rocky Mountain oysters or cowboy caviar.

Festival organizers say the event will have 60 pounds of prepared bull testicles, sliced, fried and peeled to perfection. Spilled K-Y Lube Leads To Evacuation Of Alabama Post Office

This certainly didn't make the mail come faster.

A post office in Guntersville, Ala. was evacuated Tuesday after some K-Y Intense Arousal gel leaked out of a package and spread throughout the post office at about 9 a.m., WAFF reported.

Not knowing what the slippery substance was, post office officials evacuated the place and called in hazmat teams. Two employees felt sick after coming into contact with the gel according to AL.com. They were hospitalized, but are now in stable condition. Additionally, 12 - 15 other packages were contaminated with the material.

The gel was addressed to someone in the "entertainment" industry, according to the Associated Press. The recipient's name has not been released.USPS postal inspector Tony Robinson told AL.com he has no idea why the employees felt sick, since the substance was proven to be non-toxic. However, Amazon.com reviews for the product state that the gel "burned to a painful degree" and "caused a rash”.Officials say the post office will contact the sender of the gel and instruct him or her on how to properly stuff it in to prevent future package mishaps.

CAUSES $8.9 MILLION IN DAMAGE AUTHORITIES SAY

Joel Lee Reynolds carried a longstanding grudge against his local Walmart in Lebanon, Oregon his friends would tell police. Rather than boycotting the business, Reynolds used motor oil and chlorine tablets to ignite a noxious blaze in the Supercenter’s swimming pool aisle in May, prosecutors said. The fire caused nearly $9 million in damage. It took 10 days for the store to fully re-open. According to court records, Reynolds sent a text message to a friend on the day of the blaze. “I scratched my itch,” the message read. He was sentenced to 7 years.

It's what I call the "Me first syndrome".

You were talking about the old school ways of trucking and it got me to thinking about the Boomtown truck stop and casino out past Reno, there use to be pictures in there on the walls, of course, of truckers in the early years of OTR. Gets you to thinking about if you could've made it through like they did, hell (I mean heck) most of today's drivers wouldn't know how to drive without their GPS and cellphones.

‘Absolutely NOT’ — FMCSA slapped with over 700 comments on plan to mandate electronic ID technology for CMVs

Hundreds of people have provided the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) with an opinion on a controversial proposal to require that commercial vehicles be equipped with electronic identification technology accessible by law enforcement when the truck is parked or in motion.

Electronic CMV IDs to Allow Police to Focus on “High-Risk Carriers and Drivers”

On September 23, the FMCSA published Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM) asking the trucking community to weigh in on whether every commercial vehicle used in interstate commerce should be equipped with electronic identification technology that can wirelessly communicate a unique ID number when queried by federal or state motor carrier safety personnel. The technology could be used to identify a parked truck or a truck in motion.

The agency said that they are “considering such amendments to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the roadside inspection program by more fully enabling enforcement agencies to focus their efforts at high-risk carriers and drivers.”

The FMCSA asked the public to comment on several aspects of the possible CMV electronic identification rule, including whether existing technology like ELDs could be utilized for this purpose, cost considerations, and privacy, health, or coercion concerns. Other areas that commenters are asked to address include cybersecurity issues, how many trucks are already have a type of electronic ID technology (e.g., PrePass, Drivewyze), and the impact of electronic identification numbers on highway safety.

Drivers Sound Off On CMV Electronic Identification Rule

As of the afternoon of October 7, the FMCSA has received 766 public comments on the proposed rule. A majority of the commenters are against the rule, with some calling it an overreach of the federal government. Many commenters also voiced cost, privacy, and cybersecurity concerns

# 1-    Colorado woman hit by train while locked inside police car is out of hospital

GREELEY — A 20-year-old woman who was seriously injured when the parked police patrol vehicle she was detained in was struck by a freight train in northern Colorado has been released from the hospital.

Yareni Rios-Gonzalez, of Greeley, is recovering at home with nine broken ribs, a broken arm, a fractured sternum and numerous other injuries to her head and back, her attorney, Paul Wilkinson, told KUSA-TV.

“She is bedridden. She can move around a little bit. She also has a fractured leg that she wasn’t initially aware of,” he said. “She’s still really, really hurt.”

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to a report of a road rage incident involving a firearm in Fort Lupton on Sept. 16. A Platteville police officer stopped Rios-Gonzalez’s car just past a set of railroad tracks and parked the patrol vehicle on the crossing.

She was placed in the back of the police vehicle, which was hit by the train as officers were searching her car.Police body cam and dashcam video shows officers scrambling as the train approaches and slams into the patrol vehicle, which is parked squarely on the tracks.

One officer says, “oh my God,” multiple times and another yells, “stay back,” as the train’s horn blares before the crash. The Fort Lupton Police Department is investigating the road rage report, while the Colorado State Patrol is investigating the crash. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is looking into the woman’s injury while she was in police custody.

No one has been charged in the alleged road rage incident or the crash.

Ouch! Bomb squad called to hospital after man gets munition 'stuck in his rectum'

London - Hospital staff in Britain acted swiftly after a man arrived at their emergency ward with a World War II-era munition in his rectum.

Police and army experts were called in but medics had removed the object safely before they arrived, police in Gloucestershire, western England, said.

"Police attended Gloucestershire Royal Hospital on Wednesday morning (December 1) after a report that a patient had presented with a munition in his rectum," police said in a statement.

"The item had been removed prior to police arrival and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team were contacted.

"They attended and confirmed it was not live and therefore not a danger to the public."

An Army spokesperson added: "We can confirm an Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called out to Gloucestershire at the request of local police."The Sun newspaper, which first reported the incident, said the unnamed patient told doctors he "slipped and fell" on the device.

The man had been clearing out his private arsenal of military collectables when the accident unfolded, it added.

The tabloid said the munition was later identified as from that era and typically fired from anti-tank guns.

A defense source told The Sun the 57mm shell - measuring 17cm by 6cm - was "a chunky, pointed lump of lead designed to rip through a tank's armor".

"It was basically an inert lump of metal, so there was no risk to life - at least not to anyone else's," the source said.

The patient is understood to have been released from the hospital and is set to make a full recovery, the tabloid reported.

TRUCK DRIVER SURVIVES BEING IMPALED BY ROAD DEBRIS

Sacramento- Man was released Thursday from Mercy General hospital after being impaled by a ten foot piece of metal conduit that flew through the man's windshield of his semi. Timothy Dalton was on I-5 outside of Stockton when the pickup he was behind lost the conduit out of their bed and it flipped up and went like a missile through his semi windshield where it lodged in his upper right shoulder missing any vital organs.

The driver of the pickup was cited for losing his load and non securement.

Arizona rest area closing to the public until spring 2023, will remain open for truck drivers

Starting next week, a popular Arizona rest area will close to the motoring public for construction, but will still provide parking and limited services for truck drivers.

On Wednesday, September 28, the Arizona Department of Transportation (AZDOT) will close the Sunset Point Rest Area along I-17 at mile marker 252 to the general public through the spring of 2023 for a renovation project.

During the closure, AZDOT will allow commercial vehicle drivers to use the facility for overnight parking. AZDOT will also provide portable toilets and hand washing stations for commercial vehicle driver use.File for your trucking authority here!

Non-commercial vehicle drivers can use a temporary rest area at the Badger Springs Road exit on I-17 located 4 miles north of Sunset Point. This rest area cannot accommodate commercial vehicles.

AZDOT initially planned the closure of the Sunset Point Rest Area to the general public to begin in July 2022, but after making the closure announcement, they reversed course and kept the rest area open to the general public for the busy summer travel season.

The $7.5 million rest area renovation project will include upgrades to the water systems, septic systems, restrooms, and vending areas, as well as an expanded truck parking area.

Biden pick Robin Hutcheson confirmed as new FMCSA boss

Yesterday the U.S. Senate confirmed Robin Hutcheson as the full-time Administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

On September 22, Biden administration nominee Hutcheson was confirmed as FMCSA Administrator by a voice vote in the Senate.

Hutcheson has been serving as acting/deputy FMCSA Administrator since the departure of former acting/deputy FMCSA Administrator Meera Joshi in January 2022.

Hutcheson will serve as the FMCSA’s first Administrator since the departure of Ray Martinez in the fall of 2019.

Since Martinez stepped down three years ago, the FMCSA has been led by acting/deputy Administrators Jim Mullen, Wiley Deck, Joshi, and Hutcheson.

American Trucking Associations President and CEO Chris Spear said, “I want to congratulate Robin on her confirmation to this important role. In her time as Acting Administrator, Robin has a true partner with our industry – working to confront a number of issues facing trucking. Whether it is addressing safety concerns, ongoing supply chain issues or workforce development, she has been open to engaging with our industry and we look forward to continuing our ongoing, candid dialogue about these challenges and to engaging with her and her agency to implement solutions that uphold safety and improve efficiency in trucking and across the supply chain.”

Hutcheson previously served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Safety Policy for the U.S. Department of Transportation, Director of Public Works for the City of Minneapolis, and the Transportation Director for Salt Lake City. She worked as a consultant for 15 years prior to entering public service.

Tampering with food along with the addition of human blood is a criminal offense with special circumstances. It carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison. The lesser charges of inserting the wings into her vagina while not menstruating, can carry a prison term of up to 10 years.

Family members of the perpetrator claim that; while she has the appearance of a well put together young woman, she actually suffers from multiple personality disorder and has a long history of incidents that end in either a stay in jail or in a mental hospital on a 3 day hold. Had Hooters conducted a background check, this whole incident could have been avoided.

 #2 MAN CLOSES TRUCK STOP RESTAURANT DOWN OFF 295

New Jersey man Alan Lippsonovick was in the Whitman Travel Plaza off 295 in Cherry Hill where he proceeded to try and pull the bug in my food trick to get a free meal. The man carried around a jar of small cockroaches in his knapsack. He proceeded to open up and let one onto his table unknowingly to the restaurant staff, so he could freak out and get his meal for free. Alan had done this deal numerous times in other restaurants, he said, but this time the lid slipped off the jar all the way and he released more than 75 cockroaches in the restaurant! When this happened he was caught and the police called. The Travel Plaza was shut down for a week to take the proper actions to remedy the situation. Everything was cleaned and the Travel Plaza is now back open. Mr. Lippsonovick was sentenced to 90 days in jail and 2 years probation for his stunt.

Mike Jones was arrested Tuesday by the Illinois State Police in Springfield Illinois on charges of poligamy in 8 different states. The man allegedly is married to 8 different women whom he has a total of 26 children with. Mr. Jones, a OTR Owner Operator in the trucking industry for the last 40 years, lived up to the old stereotype of having a girlfriend in every city he went to, it would seem. Along his route every month he would visit the same cities over and over and fell into a routine with the same women along the way.

Mr. Jones has wives and children in 8 states, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Oklahoma, Indiana, Nebraska, and Ohio. Obviously all the women didn't know about each other or this man would have been dead already! Mr. Mike Jones is awaiting his preliminary hearing in 6 weeks, and extradition hearings for the other 7 states.

Bobby Rutherford 6 years old from Hawthorn Mississippi took the Honors this year for the best representation of BUSINESS IN THE FRONT PARTY IN THE BACK! That's right folks THE MULLET! The competition was held again in Jackson Mississippi, where there were numerous entries. Stretching as far as the eye can see, all ages, all ethnicities, men, women, and children! The winners from all categories will be eligible for the National Contest in New York. But the overall winner here this year was a young man sporting the best mullet was Bobby Rutherford, Congratulations Bobby!

What Is The Zipper Merge?

The zipper merge is one way that drivers can merge from one lane to another if they notice a lane closure is coming up. Often times lanes close on highways or city streets due to construction or traffic accidents, and these areas can cause headaches for all drivers on the road. With this merged system, drivers are able to utilize both lanes of traffic until the defined merge area. At the point where the lane ends, drivers will take turns alternating through a “zipper-like” pattern where cars funnel into the open lane.  The Department of Transportations recommends this method for several reasons, including:

• Can reduce the overall length of traffic by up to 40%.
• Reduces lane speed differences.
• Improves throughput of traffic, even in heavily congested areas.
• Reduces congestion on highway exchanges.
• Reduces accidents in construction zones.

Even though some drivers think that passing drivers are personally insulting them, the truth is that in heavily congested, slow-moving traffic situations drivers need to do everything they can to keep traffic moving. This is not only in their personal best interest, but it is also in the interest of all drivers on the road. 

Zipper Merge Vs. Early Merge

When most drivers first see a “lane closed ahead” many people try to merge into the appropriate lane too quickly. This type of merging pattern is called the “early merge,” and it is one of the most common driving patterns among American drivers. The process of merging early requires both drivers who are joining and drivers who are allowing other cars into their lane to slow down. This driving behavior can lead to unexpected lane switching, traffic flow issues, and even increase the likelihood of serious crashes.  The best way to keep traffic moving and reduce the likelihood of causing a dangerous situation is to use both lanes for as long as possible and then alternate merging vehicles into the open lane using the “zipper merge.” While this sounds counterintuitive, there has been much research around this issue to show that utilizing both lanes for as long as possible can dramatically increase the throughput of a given area. Most drivers choose the “early merge” approach when they see a lane closed ahead because they want to be nice and don’t want to “cheat” other drivers. However, the truth is that it is safer and more efficient to remain in your current lane until you reach the defined merge area and then take turns merging into the open lane.

Why The Zipper Merge Isn’t Perfect

While the zipper method is the most efficient and safest way to merge two lanes, it is not perfect. Even though the data shows this method is the best way to merge, the human sense of being “cheated” by a driver passing them in a lane that is about to end often makes the zipper merge inefficient. Here are a few of the most notable factors that reduce the effectiveness of the zipper merge and could cause some drivers to be angry when seeing other drivers engaging in this driving patter. 

1. Impatient Motorists

When people merge early, they are stuck in a backed up and slow moving lane. After sitting in that lane for an extended period of time, many drivers become stressed and can develop road rage. It is important to note that while drivers in the open lane technically have the right of way, all merging etiquette laws suggest that drivers should let merging vehicles into their lane if safe and appropriate. 

2. “Entitled” Drivers

Many drivers think that when they see a “lane closed ahead” sign that everyone should move to the open lane as soon as possible. This mentality can breed a sense of entitlement for drivers in the open lane, and as result drivers who are looking to merge could face a dangerous situation is they are not allowed into the open lane.  If no one lets the driver in from the closed lane, that driver might be forced to act aggressively, and this could cause an accident. 

3. Road Rage

Road rage can hit the nicest people and push someone into a sense of “warrior justice.” Sitting in traffic that is not moving can raise anger quickly, and this is only multiplied in a person’s mind when they see cars speeding by them in a lane that is soon to close. As a result, drivers who have had to sit through the merging traffic are less likely to allow other drivers into their lane. 

4. A Lack Of Sharing Increased Traffic Congestion

Due to the above errors in how we interpret merging traffic, many people will choose to either join early or not let merging traffic into their lane. Both of these situations can result in bottlenecks and traffic buildups. Instead of utilizing both lanes for maximum throughput, many drivers will try to take the “high road” by merging early, even though this will only increase the overall pain everyone feels.

The Verdict Is Still Out On The Zipper Merge

Despite the growing popularity of the zipper method among highway officials, some states are hesitant to back the zipper merge. States like California hold that the early merge is the best way to combine two lanes because it does not cause sudden braking or rear-end collisions. The Federal Highway Administration does not have an official stance on whether states should promote the zipper merge, but there is still lots of research that needs to be done before one method is adopted on a national level. Either way, transportation experts will need to find a solution that is best regarding efficiency and can be used by drivers who may feel insulted by other drivers who utilize the preferred method! #1 HALLOWEEN HORROR TALES FROM THE ROAD 

It's that time of year again where we're heading into corn stalks, pumpkins,scarecrows,hay bales, and all the pumpkin spice coffee you can drink!

There's always the horror stories from drivers and the weird things they have seen out on the road around this time of year as we go into the fall season. You have the stories like the ole song PHANTOM 309 by RED SOVINE. The old tale of the black dog, kids being pranksters and dropping pumpkins off the overpasses, so they splat all over the road, and we can't forget the all dreaded HELLS NIGHT in Detroit. I'm sure we have fellow drivers out there that have more tales, which I would love to hear. So anyone with a good story please share it with us via email or you tube or in the chat please. Well try and share them on the next show.

So here's the story I remember I wanted to share with everyone. This was 5 or 6 years ago. There were a couple kids being kids, just north of Indianapolis on I65. One of the kids was hanging a concrete block off the overpass by a rope, just low enough so drivers could see it in front of their windshield. As drivers would approach they would pull it back up just in time before the vehicle would hit it. The horrific problem occurred when the young man didn't get the block pulled back up in time and a semi hit the block and slammed it through the windshield which was still hooked to the rope that was wrapped around the young man's arm. Yes, it ripped the boy's arm off immediately! The shitty part of this story is they arrested the truck driver! Dick

A woman glued her vagina shut as a bizarre bid to frame her ex-boyfriend for kidnapping and abuse is jailed for 10 years in Spain.

Aaron Young was the spelling bee champion of Connecticut in 1994, which obviously did not carry over to his real life. He worked at the local Healthy Choice  processing company that makes a variety of soups and premade meals that are distributed across the country. He was fired on Monday for throwing out all the F’s from the alphabet soup he was inspecting. The forman noticed he was taking an unusual amount of time to go through the ingredients as they went down the line. That's when he noticed that Aaron was removing something and came to find out it was the letter F from soup letters.

He was approached and asked why he was doing it? The only answer he had for the foreman was he hated that letter, it was the letter he missed in 1995 that lost him the spelling bee title for that year! It just goes to show that home schooling creates some different souls. Is that why they say? Watch your P’s and Q’s!

Dale and Marsha Ruperight are suing local small town reality star Ellis Crawford, known for his local cable network show Dream Home.  This is where he receives applicants' stories why they would be worthy of a home makeover. He uses his own money plus the sponsors and advertisers money to do these beautiful homes. Sort of a knock off from other like minded shows. But hey he helps people in need. The only problem with the show was that  the Ruperights lived next door to the property where they were to do a complete teardown and start over. A complete brand new house was to be built for a deserving couple, so they thought. The demo crew showed up and tore it down completely. Once they were done Ellis was informed that they tore down the wrong house. The Ruperights attorney was not available for comment.  He will have his day in court. Just goes to show there are idiots everywhere!

Trucking CEO: California gig worker law causing 'a lot of head scratching'

California's Assembly Bill 5 (AB5), a gig economy law passed in 2019 but was delayed until this summer, could significantly disrupt the state's trucking industry.

The law requires companies to classify independent contractors as full-time employees unless they meet the conditions stipulated in a three-pronged test. That could have ramifications for independent owner-operators, who own their trucks and contract with companies to provide transportation services.

According to Harbor Trucking Association CEO Matt Schrap, AB5 threatens to upend the businesses of 70,000 owner-operators in California.

"A lot of head scratching, unfortunately, understanding the reasons for the bill or at least the said reasons," Schrap recently told reporters during a Port of Los Angeles briefing. "We're really moving away from worker protection right now and into something different. This industry's been working very hard to combat all the misclassification issues, but I'll tell you AB5 is not without its challenges specifically."

California agencies have yet to clarify when enforcement could begin. The governor's office, which said last month that it's taking into account the concerns from the trucking industry, did not return a request for comment from Yahoo Finance.

There is "still going to be close to 80% of the trucks that are in service available to move cargo relative to the AB5 rule," Schrap said, adding that "we're just not sure exactly how this impact is going to look – cost will be going up for those who would like to try to stay in the industry and comply with however that guidance comes available from the state of California for AB5 requirements."

'Squeezed on all different sides'

Supporters of the law — including some workers who are union members — said the law can ensure workers receive fair wages and other benefits, such as health insurance.

when a man and women were rushed into the ER. They were attached together by their genitals. ABC station affiliate WHTZ out of Harrisburg,Pennsylvania reported that Solamon Miller's dog Ringo, a german shepherd mix, showed up on the porch one day with something in his mouth. Not out of the ordinary since Ringo was always bringing something up to the house, bones, sticks,dead animals, and sometimes the occasional hubcap but, this time he had a prosthetic arm! I was surprised Solamon said, he's brought many things to the house but nothing like this. Authorities tracked down the owner of the prosthetic by a serial number imprinted on it. Turns out the owner was 3 miles over from the Millers residence and had left it on his front porch the night before. The owner 64 year old Wilber Hilty went to retrieve his arm from the porch that morning and it was nowhere to be found. Relieved when the Hershey County Sheriff called him to confirm the prosthetic had been recovered. Ringo was not charged for armed robbery!

TSA at LAX airport this week found a surprise while checking Tigger Blain Roustas.The stage name he goes by in the alternative fashion industry for gay men. Mr. Roustas was going through security on his way to JFK to a runway show he was a part of in the New York fashion scene. While being x-rayed the TSA agent noticed a egg like shape in Mr. Roustas back side. He informed the officer that he was wearing a Butt Plug Tail and upon further investigation in a private screening room the officer confirmed that Mr.Roustas was indeed telling the truth. Driver in WV Turnpike crash arrested for DUI

The roadway was closed for more than 19 hours.

The truck driver involved in a hazmat crash on the West Virginia Turnpike has been arrested, police say. 

The accident happened just after midnight on Thursday, August 25th in Fayette County, West Virginia. 

According to WSAZ 3 News, the accident sparked a chemical spill involving Alkyl Dimethylamine, a cleaning agent. When officers made contact with the driver, they could smell alcohol on his breath, so they administered a field sobriety test. 

The driver, Dennis Eugene West, failed the field sobriety test and was taken to the West Virginia State Police Turnpike office in Beckley to be processed. A breathalyzer test revealed West’s blood-alcohol level to be .128, officers say.

All lanes of the roadway were closed for more than 19 hours for cleanup of the incident. The wreck has since been cleared.

Florida couple pulled over for driving erratically on I 75 near Tampa.

A Florida couple were pulled over while on Interstate 75 outside of Tampa, the vehicle they were traveling was vering all over the road, changing lanes erratically.Hitting speeds upto 48 mph! It’s been working for the last 20 years, he says. Luckily no one was hurt. He was cited for not having a valid operator's license, endangerment to the public, and erratic driving.  Highway double take: Albuquerque sign spelled without ‘R’

ALBUQUERQUE, N,M. (AP) — It made drivers on Route 66 and Interstate 40 in New Mexico do double takes.

A newly upgraded state Department of Transportation sign erected last week that pointed drivers toward Albuquerque misspelled the city’s name, losing the “R.”

People called and emailed the department to point out the mistake on the sign visible to drivers on the parallel highways, said Kimberly Gallegos, a department spokesperson.

A corrected sign went up this week, she said.

“I do not recall this happening before,” Gallegos said. “But I honestly think this was just a simple mistake.”

Albuquerque used to have another “R” in its name. According to the city’s website, colonists were granted permission in 1706 by King Philip of Spain to establish a new community on the banks of the Rio Grande.

The colony’s governor, Francisco Cuervo y Valdés, wrote a letter to Spain’s Duke of Alburquerque to report that it had been named La Villa de AlburquerqueThe first “R” was dropped later, leaving Albuquerque with its current spelling, the city website said. in his honor.

According to reports from Northwest Florida Daily News and the Niceville Police and Fire Departments, a naked man rescued from a house fire admitted to accidentally setting his house on fire after he drank 2 liters of vodka, smoked marijuana and attempted to bake cookies on an indoor grill known as a George Foreman grill.

According to reports, the grill and cookies caught fire after he left the grill unattended. When the man attempted to cover the flame with towels, the towels also caught fire.

As firefighters extinguished several items in the home which caught fire, an officer detained the man and removed him from the house for his own safety. Firefighters said that if he had stayed in the home much longer, he could have possibly died from smoke inhalation. Fortunately, the incident ended with no life-threatening injuries.

2 4. Florida Man steals $45,000 to buy new teeth for his puppy

Timothy Powell, 52, of Plantation,FL, allegedly scammed an 80-year-old man with dementia whose ID was sold on the dark web. Powell used his ill gotten gains to purchase new teeth including $40,000 worth of dental work. In addition to the dental work, Powell also planned to purchase a French Bulldog puppy for several thousand dollars. According to a report from WFTV, Powell told investigators that he was recruited by crooks who urged him to have his rotted teeth replaced with pearly white implants to improve his appearance and increase his success rate in future scams.

Powell’s scam unraveled when his victim’s caretaker noticed two large invoices from a  South Florida dental clinic.

“I never heard about anything like that,” the victim’s brother Jake Brenner told the media. “It’s kind of different.”

3. Florida Man arrested for practicing fake dentistry in bus, AKA his “the teeth mobile”

From Miami CBS 4  and Miami Dade Police Department – According to Miami-Dade Police Medical Crimes Unit investigators, Daniela Sulbaran Gonzalez, 37, and Victor Bernal, 44, of Miami, were providing free breast exams and dental services inside a bus located in a parking lot at 6001 NW 74th Avenue in west Miami-Dade.

After several months of investigation, undercover operatives from the Florida Department of Health and the MDPD Medical Crime Unit, posed as patients on Nov. 15.Bernal and Sulbaran diagnosed and offered treatment to the undercover detectives. At that point, both individuals were taken into custody without incident and charged for the unlicensed activity, according to police.

Neither has ever been licensed in Florida. Bernal is also charged with drug possession with the intent to sell, dispense, or deliver drugs without a prescription.

Some California truckers turned off their trucks, blocked terminals or staged slow rolls to snarl traffic around the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach Wednesday to express frustration over a controversial state law, AB5, that seeks to limit the use of independent contractors and largely classify them as employee drivers.

Cindy Perez, co-owner of Southern California-based Aztec Enterprises and founder of the Facebook group LA & LB Port Drivers, says she worked with countless other groups, including motor carriers, that serve the ports to stage Wednesday’s protest.

She and her husband, who own a small trucking business, said they’ve heard all of the AB5 arguments about being an employee driver versus being owner-operators. They’ve done both.

“We worked for a company that served the ports of LA/LB that offered us some benefits and paid for diesel fuel and permit costs, but we also got paid peanuts, didn’t get to choose our loads, and instead of owning the whole pizza, we only got a slice,” Perez told FreightWaves. “Instead, we worked hard to save our money to become owner-operators and purchase our own trucks. Yes, we are aware that we incur more costs as owner-operators, but we’re no longer company drivers and we get paid as business owners.”

Perez said her Facebook group printed 350 “No AB5” T-shirts that were all snapped up within hours of the start of the protest.

She suggested that a statement by Rachel Campbell, media relations manager at the Port of Los Angeles, about a “convoy of approximately 100 truckers moving through the LA/LB port complex” downplayed the size of the demonstration.

“Not everybody brought their trucks to the ports to participate in today’s protest, but they showed up wearing T-shirts, holding signs and educating the media about what AB5 means for independent truckers in California,” Perez said.

Campbell said there was “no disruption of terminal activity.” 

“Los Angeles Port Police will assist in making sure all parties are able to express their First Amendment rights while also making sure the Port continues to operate safely and commerce continues to flow,” Campbell said in a statement to FreightWaves.

However, news stations showed traffic jammed for miles because of the AB5 protest.

Some motor carriers that serve the ports of LA and Long Beach say despite their efforts to encourage truckers to become employee drivers, many independent owner-operators continue to refuse.

“Many of the port truckers who are independent owner-operators are first- and second-generation Americans who want to be their own bosses and dream of owning their own businesses,” said Gordon Reimer, manager of Southern California-based FHE Express.

Many of the 75 owner-operators his company uses to serve the ports have turned down FHE’s requests to make them employee drivers, Reimer said.

“Today’s actions by frustrated owner-operators at the California ports is a clear cry for help,” Reimer told FreightWaves. “It takes courage to park your truck and take a stand against a state intent on ending your ability to earn a living — California’s AB5 is just that.”

On June 30, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear the California Trucking Association’s challenge to AB5, returning the case to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. 

Ongoing legal challenges prevented AB5 from going into effect in January 2020. The law stems from the California Supreme Court’s decision against Dynamex Operations West Inc., a package and document delivery company. The court found that Dynamex had misclassified its delivery drivers as independent contractors rather than employees and that all California-based companies that use independent contractors must follow the “ABC test,” a three-pronged test to determine whether a worker is an employee.

The B prong defines an independent contractor as a worker engaged in “work that is outside the usual course of the hiring entity’s business.” That is problematic for motor carriers utilizing independent owner-operators to move freight.

It’s unclear how many independent contractors or owner-operators participated in the work stoppage on Wednesday or what the financial impact may be to the supply chain.

“Owner-operators are the most difficult segment of the trucking industry to try and organize — it’s like herding cats — because everyone has their own personal gripes,” Reimer said. “The intent of this self-serving piece of legislation is to deprive 70,000-plus small business trucking companies of their ability to earn a living in this state.”

His current address and whereabouts are unknown.

Earlier this year, the Orange City woman came forward and told detectives that she discovered her boyfriend was actually engaged to someone else. When she looked up the fiancée’s Facebook page, she noticed a photo of her wearing a wedding band and engagement ring that was identical to her own, from a prior marriage. When she went to check her jewelry box, she discovered her rings were missing. So were several other pieces of jewelry, including a diamond ring that belonged to her grandmother. The total value of property stolen was about $6,270. Sweeping changes could soon tighten the freight trucking market in California, driving higher costs and less capacity following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision Thursday to let the state’s “AB 5” labor law take effect, forcing fleets to compensate drivers as full employees as opposed to independent contractors, industry sources say.

That high court decision is currently rippling through lower courts, but Assembly Bill No. 5 (AB 5) will likely become active within days, lifting a stay that has frozen its application since the state government passed it in 2019.

“The injunction that has been in place for roughly two years will be lifted quickly and complying with AB 5 will be a reality for trucking companies in California. Motor carriers should immediately evaluate their California operations to determine what steps, if any, should be taken to respond to the changed backdrop for trucking,” the transportation industry law firm Scopelitis, Garvin, Light, Hanson, and Feary, P.C. said in a release. 

The impact of that change could be swift, Scopelitis President & Managing Partner Greg Feary said in an interview. “We will see a net reduction in the number of drivers in, to, and from California,” Feary said. “This will exacerbate the driver shortage and supply chain disruption in California, which is one of most active areas of supply chain and transportation activity. Meaningful numbers of drivers will leave the state, some motor carriers will no longer serve the state, and some small business contractors will decide it’s no longer in their interest to operate there.”

In Feary’s view, those changes will happen because the law’s supporters made a “profound misjudgement” that all truck drivers really want to be employees. Rather, many owner-operators prefer to be self-employed, in pursuit of goals like better pay, more flexible schedules, and building an ownership stake. Furthermore, as motor carriers add additional drivers to their employee rolls, they will pass on the cost of increased wages and benefits to shippers, who will cover that load by increasing the price of goods paid by consumers, he said.

Despite that grim prediction, labor groups think a different scenario will play out, saying that California truck drivers have long been “misclassified” as independent contractors and are overdue to earn expanded employment protections. In that assessment, AB 5’s supporters say that many companies deceptively misclassify their workers as independent contractors to deny workers fair wages and benefits, and to avoid paying employee-related expenses, like unemployment insurance, workers’ compensation and Social Security. 

“Finally, port truck drivers and so many others across California will have the opportunity to join together and earn a fair wage that allows them to support their families,” Sean M. O’Brien, general president of the Teamsters union, said in a release. “These companies can no longer take advantage of workers and fill their own executive pockets with unfairly earned profits.” CUNNILINGUS

The measurable impact of AB 5’s application on the trucking sector may not become clear for months, but any effect will probably be amplified by the economic stresses already weighing down the nation’s business climate, Feary warned. Fleet owners and labor groups alike are keeping a close eye on trends like container congestion at seaports, the labor contract now in negotiation between west coast port owners and dock workers, recession fears being stoked by rising inflation and interest rates, and a pending regulation by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) that would restrict the use of certain models of truck engines.

When she went to check her jewelry box, she discovered her rings were missing. So were several other pieces of jewelry, including a diamond ring that belonged to her grandmother. The total value of property stolen was about $6,270. Sweeping changes could soon tighten the freight trucking market in California, driving higher costs and less capacity following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision Thursday to let the state’s “AB 5” labor law take effect, forcing fleets to compensate drivers as full employees as opposed to independent contractors, industry sources say.

That high court decision is currently rippling through lower courts, but Assembly Bill No. 5 (AB 5) will likely become active within days, lifting a stay that has frozen its application since the state government passed it in 2019.

“The injunction that has been in place for roughly two years will be lifted quickly and complying with AB 5 will be a reality for trucking companies in California. Motor carriers should immediately evaluate their California operations to determine what steps, if any, should be taken to respond to the changed backdrop for trucking,” the transportation industry law firm Scopelitis, Garvin, Light, Hanson, and Feary, P.C. said in a release. 

The impact of that change could be swift, Scopelitis President & Managing Partner Greg Feary said in an interview. “We will see a net reduction in the number of drivers in, to, and from California,” Feary said. “This will exacerbate the driver shortage and supply chain disruption in California, which is one of most active areas of supply chain and transportation activity. Meaningful numbers of drivers will leave the state, some motor carriers will no longer serve the state, and some small business contractors will decide it’s no longer in their interest to operate there.”

In Feary’s view, those changes will happen because the law’s supporters made a “profound misjudgement” that all truck drivers really want to be employees. Rather, many owner-operators prefer to be self-employed, in pursuit of goals like better pay, more flexible schedules, and building an ownership stake. Furthermore, as motor carriers add additional drivers to their employee rolls, they will pass on the cost of increased wages and benefits to shippers, who will cover that load by increasing the price of goods paid by consumers, he said.

Despite that grim prediction, labor groups think a different scenario will play out, saying that California truck drivers have long been “misclassified” as independent contractors and are overdue to earn expanded employment protections. In that assessment, AB 5’s supporters say that many companies deceptively misclassify their workers as independent contractors to deny workers fair wages and benefits, and to avoid paying employee-related expenses, like unemployment insurance, workers’ compensation and Social Security. 

“Finally, port truck drivers and so many others across California will have the opportunity to join together and earn a fair wage that allows them to support their families,” Sean M. O’Brien, general president of the Teamsters union, said in a release. “These companies can no longer take advantage of workers and fill their own executive pockets with unfairly earned profits.” CUNNILINGUS

The measurable impact of AB 5’s application on the trucking sector may not become clear for months, but any effect will probably be amplified by the economic stresses already weighing down the nation’s business climate, Feary warned. Fleet owners and labor groups alike are keeping a close eye on trends like container congestion at seaports, the labor contract now in negotiation between west coast port owners and dock workers, recession fears being stoked by rising inflation and interest rates, and a pending regulation by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) that would restrict the use of certain models of truck engines.

Florida Man on Lawnmower Hits Cop Car, Gets Arrested for DUI

A Haines City man was arrested and charged with driving under the influence after he allegedly crashed his lawnmower into a police cruiser.

According to Haines City Police Department, Polk County Prison records and a report in The Lakeland Ledger, Gary Wayne Anderson was charged with driving under the influence and refusing to submit to a DUI test on May 5. The crash occurred around 7 pm outside Rodriguez Fashion on US-17/92 North. The Haines City Police Department told News Channel 8 WFLA that an officer was inside when he heard a loud noise come from outside where his cruiser was parked.

The officer involved claims he spotted Anderson on a lawnmower with an attached trailer. The officer also noted there was minor damage to the back bumper on his police car.

According to WFLA, Anderson admitted he was drunk and hit the cruiser but claimed he didn’t cause any damage. Officers claim Anderson couldn’t complete field sobriety tests and noted that his demeanor “ranged from laughing to aggressive.”

Anderson was taken to Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center, where he provided a breathalyzer sample. According to police, his blood-alcohol content was .241 – more than three times the legal limit.

Officers said Anderson also had cocaine in his system. Anderson accused the police of putting the cocaine in his system, “while directing profane language and racial slurs at the officer,” police say.

Haines City Police Chief Jim Elensky told WFLA he was proud of his officers’ behavior throughout the incident and shared his quote on the department’s official Facebook page.

According to court records, Anderson’s driver’s license has been suspended since March 1978. He also has two prior DUI convictions.

We don’t just spend more time looking for the perfect gift for our moms, but on average we spend a lot more money on Mother’s Day compared to Father’s Day. Florida Man on Lawnmower Hits Cop Car, Gets Arrested for DUI

A Haines City man was arrested and charged with driving under the influence after he allegedly crashed his lawnmower into a police cruiser.

According to Haines City Police Department, Polk County Prison records and a report in The Lakeland Ledger, Gary Wayne Anderson was charged with driving under the influence and refusing to submit to a DUI test on May 5. The crash occurred around 7 pm outside Rodriguez Fashion on US-17/92 North. The Haines City Police Department told News Channel 8 WFLA that an officer was inside when he heard a loud noise come from outside where his cruiser was parked.

The officer involved claims he spotted Anderson on a lawnmower with an attached trailer. The officer also noted there was minor damage to the back bumper on his police car.

According to WFLA, Anderson admitted he was drunk and hit the cruiser but claimed he didn’t cause any damage. Officers claim Anderson couldn’t complete field sobriety tests and noted that his demeanor “ranged from laughing to aggressive.”

Anderson was taken to Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center, where he provided a breathalyzer sample. According to police, his blood-alcohol content was .241 – more than three times the legal limit.

Officers said Anderson also had cocaine in his system. Anderson accused the police of putting the cocaine in his system, “while directing profane language and racial slurs at the officer,” police say.

Haines City Police Chief Jim Elensky told WFLA he was proud of his officers’ behavior throughout the incident and shared his quote on the department’s official Facebook page.

According to court records, Anderson’s driver’s license has been suspended since March 1978. He also has two prior DUI convictions.

Why Does Mother’s Day Get Way More Attention Than Father’s Day?

Uh oh. Did you forget about Father’s Day again? You’re not alone. Just look at the numbers.

We don’t just spend more time looking for the perfect gift for our moms, but on average we spend a lot more money on Mother’s Day compared to Father’s Day. According to the National Retail Federation, Mother’s Day spending reached an estimated $25 billion dollars this year, while Father’s Day spending was “only” $16 billion.

Why is it that Father’s Day always seems to sneak up on us? Why are we always rushing around in a blind panic searching for something to bring to dad for Father’s Day brunch? Well, we have a few theories as to why dads too often end up with the short end of the stick (or another tie!)

Father’s Day vs. Mother’s Day

Theory 1: It’s the marketers!

Both for-profit and non-profit organizations alike start their Mother’s Day campaigns far earlier than their campaigns for Father’s Day. So it’s not (entirely) our fault. We rely on the visual reminders from retailers to prompt us into shopping action – and with so many demands on our attention, it is no wonder that without the Father’s Day prompts we fail to remember.

BUT

On average, when we do remember about good old dad, we still tend to spend more on Mother’s Day gifts than on Father’s Day gifts. In fact, in the U.S. we spend on average a hefty $186 on a mother’s day gift vs. $135 on a father’s day gift.

Okay, not to the bottom of it yet! 

Theory 2: We think our moms deserve thoughtful gifts.

Dr. Lars Perner is a consumer psychologist at the University of Southern California. In an article featured in the BBC, she explained that for many of us, mothers are identified as being, “the biggest contributors to home life”, therefore worthy of more attention

BUT

This is certainly not the case for every family. And, let’s not discount all the contributions dads make around the house. I mean seriously, who else would fix that leaky faucet — or at least try to fix the leaky faucet.

Side note: Actually, moms fix leaky faucets too… moms can do just about anything! (ahhhh! This is not working)

Next… 

Theory 3: Mother’s Day was recognized first.

In the U.S., Father’s Day wasn’t recognized as an official celebratory holiday until almost 6o years after the first Mother’s Day. Americans are just more accustomed to celebrating Mother’s Day.

BUT

Just because something takes a little longer to catch on does not make it any less important! Surely we should be trying to make up for lost time.

Moving on! 

Theory 4: Dads are just less interested in gifts.

This theory comes from Dr. Lars Perner again. She explained that dads are, “…not typically gift oriented. They generally don’t expect anyone to feel an obligation to buy material items for them.”

BUT

While this theory might make us feel less guilty about forgetting Father’s Day, no one really dislikes receiving a gift from a loved one.

Bring on theory number 5!

Theory 5: Summer retail fatigue is real.

Nothing can beat the retail frenzy that happens during the holiday months of November and December. Traditionally, the hottest retail days of the spring/summer are Mother’s Day, graduation weekends, and Memorial Day… all of which fall just before Father’s Day. So, I guess the theory here is that people just get burnt out from all the shopping they’ve already done.

BUT

Can you really ever get burnt out from shopping? And, even if you aren’t a big shopper, I don’t think your dad will appreciate the shopping burnt-out excuse when Sunday brunch rolls around and you don’t have a gift… again, “Sorry dad, all the shopping I did at the beginning of this summer really took a toll on me.”

What’s next?

Theory 6: Quality time is all that your dad really wants anyway.

Many have come to find that just hanging out with dad is better than any gift they could give.

BUT

Point One: Your mom also deserves and loves quality time, but you still insist on giving her a gift.

Point two: If you think about it, you should be spending quality time with your dad as often as possible, not just on Father’s Day.

Point Three: It’s not like your dad won’t appreciate a Father’s Day gift.

Now what…

Theory 7: Dads are just harder to buy for.

In a 2017 survey, 38% of respondents reported feeling like Father’s Day gifts were more “tricky” to shop for than Mother’s Day gifts.

DeSantis also captured the Steve Sturgess Best Theme award for her “The Witches Inn” theme. She previously won Best of Show in 2019.

A driver takes either the most depressing or efficient truck stop shower we’ve ever seen in this puzzling video. 

In the clip, a driver takes to the squeegee bucket at the fuel island, but not because he has a few dirty windows. The presumed driver can be seen wearing shorts and flip flops as he scrubs himself down with the questionable liquid. 

“Do what you have to do sometime. Trucking can be hard. Judge not,” commented one viewer. 

“Now I know why last time I washed my windows with that bucket and squeegee my windows were smearing and smelling funny!” added another.

Massive Storm Dumps 3 Feet Of Snow In Northwest Wyo; Dozens Of Travelers Rescued

A major spring snow storm dumped more than 3 feet of snow on northwest Wyoming over the Memorial Day weekend, stranding dozens of travelers on the Chief Joseph Highway.

Dozens of people caught in the storm that closed Wyoming Highway 296, which connects Cody to Cooke City, Montana, and the Beartooth Highway, had to be rescued by Department of Transportation personnel, according to Cody Beers, a department public relations specialist.

“There were vehicles blocked there last night and spun out on the road,” Beers told Cowboy State Daily midday Monday. “There’s at least two feet of snow up on (Dead Indian Pass) and there was a pretty good line of cars, 10 to 12 cars backed up.”

To make matters worse, Beers said a pickup with a camper in the back had spun out, blocking the road for oncoming traffic.

As of late Monday morning, however, Beers said a WYDOT loader had arrived and was clearing the road so vehicles could pass.

“He’s been digging a trail down through the road,” he said, “and I’m sure he’s going to go clear to the bottom and see if there’s other people spun out on the switchbacks on the backside of Dead Indian (Pass).”

Additionally, Beers told Cowboy State Daily a power line had come down on the highway due to the heavy, wet snow, creating dangerous sparks. 

“They had to wait for Rocky Mountain Power to remove the line,” he said, “So (snow removal crews are) trying to catch up now.”

The National Weather Service and Cowboy State Daily’s Don Day had predicted a major winter storm for the state’s northern and central mountains.

“There were warnings put out for 1 to 2 feet in the mountains and it looks like the National Weather Service hit a bullseye,” Beers said, “because it’s deep wet, heavy snow.

“I mean, it’s multimillion dollar snow right now for our farmlands and our mountains,” he continued, “but it comes on a holiday weekend when a lot of people are out there camping, weather forecast be damned.”

Beers urged people to stay off the highways if possible.

“I’m sure people made the decision to try to get out of (the mountains), and then it only took one vehicle to get stopped, to stop the entire convoy of vehicles coming out,” he said.

Chief Joseph was only one of the highways closed due to weather this weekend. Sylvan Pass closed at 6:30 a.m. Monday, cutting off the only access to Yellowstone from the East Gate; U.S Highway 14A was closed from Lovell to Dayton over the Bighorn Mountains, and Beartooth Pass, which was scheduled to open for the season this weekend, remained closed due to the winter storm.

Driver trapped, hundreds of chickens die in crash near Chattanooga

A trucker was trapped in his truck's cab for an hour and a half Tuesday, May 31, after a crash on eastbound Interstate 24 in Tennessee. 

Hundreds of chickens on the tractor-trailer died in the crash.

The Chattanooga Fire Department reports the truck struck a guardrail and flipped into the median near mile marker 172  shortly after 1 p.m.

The driver was transported to a nearby hospital with what the fire department said were non-life-threatening injuries.

A crew from a poultry processing company arrived to help manage the chicken situation. The live chickens were collected, and the dead chickens were removed from the roadway.

I don't know if any of these are actually true.

1. 'A SHOT OF WHISKEY' - In the old west a .45 cartridge for a six-gun

cost 12 cents, so did a glass of whiskey. If a cowhand was low on cash he

would often give the bartender a cartridge in exchange for a drink. This

became known as a "shot" of whiskey

1. BUYING THE FARM - This is synonymous with dying. During WW1 soldiers were

given life insurance policies worth $5,000. This was about the price of an

average farm so if you died you "bought the farm" for your survivors.

1. IRON CLAD CONTRACT - This came about from the ironclad ships of the Civil

War. It meant something so strong it could not be broken.

1. RIFF RAFF - The Mississippi River was the main way of travelling from

north to south. Riverboats carried passengers and freight but they were

expensive so most people used rafts. Everything had the right of way over

rafts which were considered cheap. The steering oar on the rafts was called

a "riff" and this transposed into riff-raff, meaning low class.

1. SHIP STATE ROOMS - Travelling by steamboat was considered the height of

comfort. Passenger cabins on the boats were not numbered. Instead they were

named after states. To this day cabins on ships are called staterooms.

1. SLEEP TIGHT- Early beds were made with a wooden frame. Ropes were tied

across the frame in a crisscross pattern. A straw mattress was then put on

top of the ropes. Over time the ropes stretched, causing the bed to sag.

The owner would then tighten the ropes to get a better nightÿs sleep.

1. SHOWBOAT - These were floating theatres built on a barge that was pushed

by a steamboat. These played small towns along the Mississippi River .

Unlike the boat shown in the movie "Showboat" these did not have an engine.

They were gaudy and attention grabbing which is why we say someone who is

being the life of the party is ´showboating".

1. OVER A BARREL - In the days before CPR a drowning victim would be placed

face down over a barrel and the barrel would be rolled back and forth in an

effort to empty the lungs of water. It was rarely effective. If you are

over a barrel you are in deep trouble.

1. BARGE IN - Heavy freight was moved along the Mississippi in large barges

pushed by steamboats. These were hard to control and would sometimes swing

into piers or other boats. People would say they "barged in".

1. HOGWASH - Steamboats carried both people and animals. Since pigs smelled

so bad they would be washed before being put on board. The mud and other

filth that was washed off was considered useless ´hog wash".

11. BARRELS OF OIL - When the first oil wells were drilled they had made no

provision for storing the liquid so they used water barrels. That is why,

to this day, we speak of barrels of oil rather than gallons.

12. HOT OFF THE PRESS - As the paper goes through the rotary printing press

friction causes it to heat up. Therefore, if you grab the paper right off

the press itÿs hot. The expression means to get immediate information

June 2 (UPI) -- National Rotisserie Chicken Day, celebrated annually on June 2, was started by restaurant chain Boston Market in 2015 to celebrate the popular slow-roasted dish.

The holiday was founded by Boston Market in 2015, with the restaurant offering deals for the holiday and encouraging chicken fans to share photos and recipes on social media with the hashtag "#NationalRotisserieChickenDay."

"Rotisserie chicken has become a key ingredient in healthful eating in America and this special day reminds everyone about it," said George Michel, CEO of Boston Market, said in a 2016 news release for the second annual National Rotisserie Chicken Day. Wisconsin's Osborn & Son Trucking raises driver pay by12%

Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin-based Osborn & Son Trucking recently announced an increase in pay-per-mile from 58 cents to 65 cents -- a 12% increase -- for drivers who travel to the East Coast.

Osborn is also making substantial changes to their benefits package, relieving much of the healthcare premium burden for drivers. As a result of the pay increase, the average annual pay for a full-time Osborn driver is now up to $100,000 per year. Along with the increase in pay per mile Osborn is paying teams at 85 cents per mile.

The company is hiring regional truck drivers to move beverages between the Midwest region and the East Coast. Osborn & Son Trucking operates satellite consolidation warehouse hubs in Edison, New Jersey, and Bolingbrook, Illinois. All drivers operating on this route are eligible for the pay per mile rate increase, resulting in an average annual pay increase of $9,000 for full-time drivers.

The annual Roadcheck blitz begins Tuesday, May 17, and lasts through Thursday, May 19. During that time,  During that time, law enforcement officers throughout the U.S., Canada, and Mexico will inspect commercial vehicles paying close attention to trucks' wheel ends.

Last year more than 40,000 commercial vehicles were inspected, including 19,768 in the U.S. Those inspections led to 4,136 vehicles and 1,083 drivers being placed out of service for violations.

The top violations on vehicles last year were:

Lights, 1,367 violations

Brake adjustment, 1,203 violations

Cargo securement, 1,192 violations

Vehicles that pass a Level I or V inspection with no critical vehicle inspection item violations are eligible to receive a CVSA decal. Generally, vehicles displaying a valid CVSA decal, valid for up to three months, are not subjected to inspection. Instead, jurisdictions typically focus their efforts on vehicles that do not display a valid decal.

Salado Fire Department warning about rattlesnakes in pool noodles

SALADO, Texas (KXAN) — A central Texas volunteer fire department is asking people to keep an eye out for rattlesnakes in pool toys.

“When someone picked up one of their pool noodles, a large rattlesnake fell out. And they realized later that several baby snakes were still inside,” a post from the Salado Volunteer Fire Department originally said. After KXAN reached out, the post was altered to be less specific.

“There could be snakes in your pool noodles,” they changed the post to say.

The department noted that with temperatures rising, it is common for snakes to look for dark and cool spaces to hide during the day. They recommended keeping pool toys elevated or sealed if you’re keeping them outside.

The department said if a snake does bit you, stay calm and head to the hospital as soon as possible. Be able to describe the snake to hospital staff as best as you can.

They say don’t do things like trying to cut the wound, suck the venom out or try to capture the snake.

Now saying that,  some of us still have them, some have passed away,some are still Batshit Crazy and some we miss dearly! When we started this podcast I wasn't really sure how it was gonna go. I can honestly say I enjoy telling stories with these two knuckle heads and love to hear from all of you out there. I hope that what we say and do on here puts a smile on at least one person's face, because I know it cracks me up!

PAYING IT FORWARD MOVEMENT!

Does anybody still do this anymore? I do it myself, and see other people around my area that do it. Sometimes it's just a simple gesture of paying for someone's drive thru order behind you.

Helping a fellow person out is down on their luck. Helping a mom out at the grocery store that doesnt have enough money to pay for her groceries that she has in her cart without having to put some things back. See a elderly couple in a restaurant sharing a dinner because they cant afford two, and picking up the check for them.  If we still did little things like this it could help change things, maybe not the world but IT WILL CHANGE THAT PERSONS DAY, WEEK,MONTH,or maybe YEAR. You never know what a little bit of kindness and compassion can do for a person that is down on their luck, and you might just get that person to help someone else and so on and so on! It's a pretty neat theory that's been around for a bit, but there's no reason we can't give it  life again. Truckers have a bad public image most of the time, and some are our own fault but this helping other people think would go a long way with the public and just might make you feel good in the process. Anyway that's my two cents about it. I hope you give it some thought and have a GREAT WEEK OUT THERE. BE SAFE AND BRINGER HOME EVERYONE!

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. - Earlier this year, surveillance video was released that showed the end of an apparent pursuit between a motorcycle rider and Osceola County deputies at a Wawa gas station in Florida, where a fire erupted shortly after.

The 26-year-old motorcycle rider, later identified as Jean Barretto, was seriously burned, suffering third-degree burns to 75% of his body, and remains hospitalized, according to his attorneys Mark NeJame and Albert Yonfa (Nejame's office is also representing the victims in the unrelated deputy-involved shooting outside a Target in Kissimmee)

Three deputies were hurt in the fire – two with minor injuries, and one with third-degree burns who also remains hospitalized, according to officials.On Wednesday, attorney Mark NeJame demanded the Florida Department of Law Enforcement open an investigation and for Osceola County Sheriff's Office to release more information about the February incident.Back in February, Osceola County Sheriff's Office said in a news release that the incident began after deputies received reports of people on motorcycles pointing guns at other vehicles. That reportedly led to a pursuit, which ended at the Wawa gas station.

Barretto's attorney said the man was not pointing guns at other vehicles and was at the gas station to fill up on his way home. 

"Never had a gun that day. Never brandished a gun. But yet is being vilified while he’s laying pretty much skinless in a hospital bed fighting for his life," NeJame said during a news conference on Wednesday.

NeJame also alleged that after his client was tackled by deputies, his motorcycle was knocked over and gas spilled on the ground, which was sparked by a deputy's Taser.

The Division of Investigative and Forensic Services also released its investigative report on Wednesday. That report said Barretto was not expected to survive his injuries. 

"This is a good, young man working at Fed Ex. Why is this happening?" NeJame asked, calling for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) to review the case. "We want FDLE to have an independent investigation." 

On the night of the fire, Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez told FOX 35 News that the bikers went from Osceola County into Orange County. 

"We don’t pursue. They fled the area; our aviation unit found multiple individuals, this one just so happened to stop here"

Sheriff Lopez plans to speak out about the case on Thursday afternoon.

In February, an eyewitness described what happened from their perspective at the gas station.

"They get to the car, and they was like ‘get on the ground!’ They're arresting the guy. We hear the Taser going off. All of a sudden you see a big flame go into the air!"

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) notice of intent to proceed with rulemaking to mandate speed limiters on most heavy-duty trucks is being published in the Federal Register Wednesday, May 4. The publication of what the agency is calling an advance notice of supplemental proposed rulemaking opens the comment period for 30 days.

Comments can be made here through June 3.

As previously reported, the notice does not specify any speed to which trucks will be limited under the regulation and is not a proposal of any regulatory language to amend the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. Instead, it is a fact-finding and data-mining tool for FMCSA to determine how to best proceed with the rule.

The speed limiter debate has been on the back-burner since early in the Trump administration. A joint rulemaking issued in 2016 by FMCSA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration explored potentially limiting trucks to either 60, 65 or 68 miles per hour.

The new notice is being published solely by FMCSA, and the requirements of the rule will fall to motor carriers to implement the speed limiters rather than the OEMs.

In the notice, FMCSA said it is considering making the rule only applicable to trucks manufactured after a certain date — potentially 2003 — "because this is the population of vehicles for which [electronic engine control units] were routinely installed and may potentially be used to govern the speed of the vehicles.”

The agency added that moving forward with a motor carrier-based speed limiter rule “will ensure compliance with the rule, and potentially avoid confusion on who is responsible” for implementing the speed limiters and ensuring they remain active.

During the 30-day comment period, FMCSA is asking for public comment on 12 questions, specifically dealing with the programming or adjustment of engine control units (ECUs) that could be made to impose speed limits on heavy-duty trucks. The questions are as follows:

1. What percentage of the CMV fleet currently uses speed limiting devices?
2. If in use, at what maximum speed are the devices generally set?
3. What skill sets or training are needed for motor carriers’ maintenance personnel to adjust or program ECUs to set speed limits?
4. What tools or equipment are needed to adjust or program ECUs?
5. How long would adjustment or reprogramming of an ECU take?
6. Where can the adjustment or reprogramming of an ECU be completed?
7. Can the adjustment or reprogramming of an ECU be made on-site where the vehicle is ordinarily housed or garaged, or would it have to be completed at a dealership?
8. Do responses to questions 3 through 6 change based on the model year of the power unit?
9. Since publication of the NPRM (in 2016), how has standard practice or technology changed as it relates to the ability to set speed limits using ECUs?
10. Are there any challenges or burdens associated with FMCSA publishing a rule without NHTSA updating the FMVSS?
11. Should FMCSA revisit using the 2003 model year as the baseline requirement for the rule?
12. Should FMCSA consider a retrofit requirement in the rule and, if so, should it be based on model year or other criteria, and what would the cost of such a requirement be?
13. Should FMCSA include truck Classes 3-6 (i.e., 10,001 – 26,001 lbs. GVWR) in the SNPRM? 

CCJ research since the notice of intent was announced last week found that a majority of fleets already have speed limiters in place, and nearly half of those have the limiters set at 66 miles per hour or higher.

Speed limiters have largely been supported by the American Trucking Associations, which last week applauded FMCSA for reviving the rulemaking, adding that ATA “look[s] forward to working with the agency to shape a final rule that is consistent with our policy supporting the use of speed limiters in conjunction with numerous other safety technologies.”

On the other side of the debate, the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association has long been opposed to speed limiters and last week reaffirmed that position, stating that speed differentials between trucks and passenger cars on highways will have a negative impact on safety

Change California's Speed Limit and Lane Restrictions

In the state of California, commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) and other vehicles that are towing are required to drive no faster than 55 mph and stay to the far right of the roadways. This is an unsafe practice and causes undue stress on the motoring public. 

If CMVs were allowed to travel at the same speed as the traffic that it is in, traffic would flow more efficiently and effectively while lowering the number of accidents that are caused by these two laws. 

The National Motorists Association Executive Director Gary Biller was quoted in 2011 in an interview as stating, “Having split speed limits between cars and trucks sharing the same roadways is poor traffic safety design. The same is true for variable daytime/nighttime speed limits. Anything that has the potential for adding driver confusion or uncertainty is inadvisable.”

The Texas Department of Transportation, along with the Utah Department of Transportation post the fastest legal speed limits (up to 85 mph on some stretches in Texas) in the nation. Utah has reported an excellent safety record for its 80 mph stretch of I-15.

Texas DOT Traffic Operations Director Carlos Lopez, in a 2006 department explanation of speed limit changes in West Texas stated, “Crash records show that when the speed limit in these areas increased to 75 mph in 2001, the number of traffic deaths on those segments decreased. Motorists can prevent crashes by practicing safe driving habits.”

Twenty-four states have legally set their approved maximum speed limits at or above 70 mph on roads designed for the higher rate of speed with ten of these having approved limits of 75 mph for certain roads. Further, these states have determined that it is in the best interest of highway safety to allow all vehicles, including heavy-duty trucks, to travel at these speeds.

Analysis formulated with data from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration shows that over a recent 12-month period, the crash rate was 71% higher (9.5 vs. 5.56) for large fleet truck firms than for one-truck carriers. Why is this data important to this conversation? Large fleet truck firms limit their truck’s speed electronically already, although none that I know of to the extent that California limits them.

But at 65 mph it takes a CMV almost the length of a football field to stop!!

While that information may have been true in the past, the advent and installation of safety devices such as anti-lock brakes, and disc brakes on CMVs dramatically reduce this. Yes, it still takes a CMV longer to stop than a passenger vehicle, but isn’t that why CMV drivers are made to go through a school to learn how to safely handle their equipment, taught that looking one quarter to one half mile down the road is key to safety, and drilled into them that following distance equals a safer drive? Do you go to a monthly safety meeting to address issues that may or may not arise from your day of driving your car? How about quarterly? How many times a day do you get pulled off of the road for a roadside inspection of the equipment that you’re driving to make sure that everything is working as it should be? Are you required to do a pre-trip inspection of your vehicle before you take off each day? How about a post-trip inspection? Are you regulated to the number of hours that you can drive your personal vehicle in a given time period?

Getting CMVs at the flow of traffic and out of the way of traffic trying to leave or enter highways is a much safer and more expedient way of easing traffic conditions in our state. 

Cannabis confusion: Thousands of truckers taken off the job amid supply chain woes

The Biden administration is vowing to put more commercial truck drivers on the road to help ease the supply chain snarls plaguing the economy.

But one obstacle of the government’s own making is hampering that goal — a federal ban on marijuana use that has sidelined tens of thousands of truckers.

Washington’s zero-tolerance approach to weed has swept up drivers who lit up only when off-duty, as well as those who consumed hemp derivatives such as CBD oil that are advertised as non-psychoactive, according to industry experts and court documents. Truckers who drive cross-country also face a morass of confusing state regulations, as 18 states have legalized recreational marijuana use and another 37 allow medical use.

Another complication: The only accepted roadside tests for marijuana use can produce positive results more than a month after the person smoked or consumed it, unlike commonly used breathalyzer tests for alcohol impairment, which give a snapshot of the moment the test was conducted.

Paul Enos, CEO of the Nevada Trucking Association, a state where recreational marijuana use is legal, said tests that capture weeks-old use force people out of the industry who are not necessarily a danger on the roads.

“It’s an issue for our industry when you look at the number of people who are no longer driving,” Enos said.

He added that removing drug-using drivers from the roads can help prevent impaired driving. Still, “We would all benefit from having a reasonable impairment test that is not going to ... cause our highways to be less safe.”

And drivers who test positive find themselves in a Catch-22: Many trucking companies will immediately fire drivers with a positive drug test, but the process of returning to the road requires an employer sponsor.

All this comes as President Joe Biden and his appointees, including Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, are trying to bring more truckers into the workforce, for example by expanding apprenticeship programs that make it easier to obtain a commercial driver’s license and promoting opportunities for women and veterans to enter the field. Their aim is to get goods out of ports and warehouses faster, lessening the supply chain crunch that has contributed to inflation and shortages of certain goods.

Sean Garney, co-director of Scopelitis Transportation Consulting, a firm that advises trucking clients on rules and regulations, said the industry loses drivers to other jobs where marijuana use isn’t a potential career-killer.

“But we’re bound by federal rules that classify marijuana as a Schedule 1 drug,” Garney said.

The Biden administration hasn’t endorsed relaxing federal marijuana laws, but the Transportation Department is soliciting comments on a new standard for marijuana tests that would zero in on recent use. That process is still in the early stages.

The trucking industry acknowledges that the rules are confusing but argues that prohibitions on marijuana use are not a huge issue because the vast majority of drivers don’t test positive. It says relaxing the testing rules would result in more impaired drivers on the road.

“We often have to explain to members that things like CBD oil, which is all over the place, could cause you to test positive,” said Andrew King, a research analyst with the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association, which represents the interests of independent truck drivers. “But it’s better to be safe than sorry. You have a federal license so you have a higher standard.”

Others say drug testing is worsening the industry’s workforce problems.

“We’re excluding a significant portion of that trucker industry,” said Chris Harvey, Wells Fargo’s head of equity strategy, during a conference in February.

Michigan continues rolling back Spring weight restrictions

The Michigan Department of Transportation and local agencies continue to adjust annual spring weight restriction areas to protect roads.

Effective 6 a.m. Monday, April 18, weight restrictions will be lifted on all state trunkline highways from the southern Michigan border north to and including M-72 from the intersection with M-22 in the village of Empire, Leelanau County, east on M-72 to US-131 in the village of Kalkaska, south on US-131 to the south junction with M-72, then east on M-72, ending at US-23 in the city of Harrisville, Alcona County. 

Frost restrictions are still in effect for the remainder of the state and will be imposed and enforced on all state trunkline highways north of the M-72 line. State routes typically carry M, I, or US designations. 

When roads that have been frozen all winter begin to thaw from the surface downward, melting snow and ice saturate the softened ground. During the spring thaw, the roadbed softened by trapped moisture beneath the pavement makes it more susceptible to damage. This also contributes to pothole problems already occurring due to this winter's numerous freeze-thaw cycles.

In the restricted areas, the following will apply:

• On routes designated as "all-season" (designated in green and gold on the MDOT Truck Operators Map), there will be no reduction in legal axle weights.
• On routes designated as "seasonal" (designated in solid or dashed red on the MDOT Truck Operators Map), there will be a posted weight reduction of 25 percent for rigid (concrete) pavements and 35 percent for flexible (asphalt) pavements
• All extended permits will be valid for oversize loads in the weight-restricted area on the restricted routes. Single-trip permits will not be issued for any overweight loads or loads exceeding 14 feet in width, 11 axles and 150 feet in overall length on the restricted routes

MDOT determines when weight restrictions begin each spring by measuring frost depths along state highways, observing road conditions, and monitoring weather forecasts. Weight restrictions remain in effect until the frost line is deep enough to allow moisture to escape and the roadbeds regain stability.

County road commissions and city public works departments put in place their own seasonal weight restrictions, which usually, but not always, coincide with state highway weight restrictions. Signs are generally posted to indicate which routes have weight restrictions in effect.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is conducting a week-long enforcement detail targeting idling trucks and emissions violations.

In an April 21 announcement, the DEC said that the enforcement blitz is taking place in approximately 30 locations statewide to commemorate Earth Week.

The DEC’s Division of Law Enforcement, in coordination with DEC’s Division of Air Resources staff will conduct emissions inspections on diesel vehicles to “help identify non-compliant heavy-duty vehicles and reduce emissions of fine particulate matter in disadvantaged communities where there is often significant heavy-duty vehicle traffic.”

Additionally, “Environmental Conservation Police Officers will also engage in targeted enforcement of regulations restricting idling time for diesel vehicles. Reduced idling time cuts down on air pollution and noise, improves fuel economy, and saves diesel operators and consumers money. Officers will also monitor compliance of pesticide applications, solid waste transportation, and open burning as part of the Earth Week detail.”

“New York State continues to lead the nation in taking bold action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other air pollutants that harm our environment, economy, and affect Environmental Justice communities that are disproportionately impacted by pollution,” DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos said. “This latest diesel truck detail, happening as we commemorate Earth Week, will take dirty trucks off our roads and provides us with a great example of why we need to accelerate our transition from fossil fuels to prevent the damage they cause to our climate and the health of our communities.”

C.W. McCall’s ‘Convoy’ Meant Something To Wyoming Truckers

“Ah, breaker one-nine, this here’s the Rubber Duck – you got a copy on me, Pig Pen, c’mon?”

Those lines penned by William Dale Fries Jr. — better known by his stage name of C.W. McCall — were remembered fondly among truckers in the wake of his death last week.

McCall’s story about a “Convoy” of semi-trucks earned him a No. 1 hit in 1976 and made him the unofficial balladeer for the nation’s long-haul truckers in the 1970s and 1980s.

Fries passed away on April 1 at the age of 93 at his home in Ouray, Colorado, after a long career as the troubadour of truck drivers. As the fictional “C.W. McCall,” Fries paired his unforgettable voice with music by composer and songwriter Chip Davis (founder of Mannheim Steamroller) to create songs that brought the lifestyle of long-haul truckers to radio audiences across the country.

“Those songs made you feel like you were part of a culture,” said Bill Froehlich, who drove truck as a young man in the 1970s. “They made truckers feel like they were important. And they are.”

Froehlich not only drove semis himself, he also owned and operated the Interstate Standard station in Buffalo in the 1980s, which catered to truck drivers coming off I-90. 

McCall Knew The Industry

He said songs like “Wolf Creek Pass” – while humorous – resonated with people who lived that life.

“He really must have been involved in the industry and knew a lot about it, because a lot of his songs, what he said was true,” he said.

Lyrics for “Wolf Creek Pass,” for example, detailing a harrowing trip down mountain roads into Pagosa Springs, Colorado, ring true for Froehlich: “Well, Earl reared back / And cocked his leg / Stepped down as hard as he could on the brake / And the pedal went clear to the floor / And stayed right there on the floor / And he says it was sorta like steppin’ on a plum.”

“A lot of the times, if you stepped on (the brakes), it WAS like stepping on a plum,” Froehlich said, laughing. “They were just soft, and they didn’t hold.”

Froehlich said he appreciated the citizens band radio lingo in McCall’s songs as well. The song “Convoy,” for example, featured a character whose CB handle was “Pig Pen” – and Pig Pen hauled hogs.

“That’s what that song was about – the jargon,” Froehlich said. “And everyone had to have a handle.” 

Froehlich’s handle was “Willie.”

Another trucker who retired to Wyoming worked under the handle “Low Chunk” while he drove rigs in the 1970s and ‘80s. Don Frame of Cody said the song “Convoy” inspired more than just the drivers.. 

“It was kind of a rallying call,” Frame said. “It inspired a lot of truckers, it really did. And even people who weren’t truckers were loving it and enjoying (McCall’s) music.”

National Anthem

Trucker Al Reccardi, a truck driver from Dayton, Ohio, who drives through Wyoming on a weekly basis, told Cowboy State Daily during a stop in Cheyenne on Thursday that McCall still has an impact on truckers.

A lot of younger truckers, he said, will ask what the profession was like 50 years ago. The song always comes up, he said.

“We talk about ‘Convoy’ because it was our national anthem,” Reccardi said. “C.W. McCall captured our way of life. Ain’t no one done it better or done it since.”

He said McCall explained to America the CB culture and how important the short-range radios were to the trucking industry.

“If there was an accident ahead, a smoky (law enforcement) on patrol, or a good batch of lot lizards (prostitutes) at a truck stop, we let each other know,” he said. “You can’t get that with an app or with the Google.”

Reccardi said members of the truck driving community were more tight-knit at that time because people actually spoke to each other.

“We looked out for each other,” he said inhaling smoke from a Marlboro light.

He said the song just “brought everyone together” and the lyrics that McCall wrote were evocative of the language that was actually used.

San Francisco was called ‘Shaky Town,’ as McCall mentioned in his song. ‘Good buddy’ is what truckers called each other, he said. 

“I miss those days,” he said.

McCall and Seger

Thomas Morrow, a truck driver since 1978 who is moving to Cheyenne in May, said while the CB radio is still in use, truckers do not us it to contact each other as frequently as they did in the past. 

“I’d say not even 50 percent of the drivers out here don’t even use a CB anymore,” he said.  

His misses that culture but refuses to give up on it, noting he used to eat in the same diner that Bob Seger before the singer had attained star status.

“I used to see him at the Fleetwood Diner in Ann Arbor, Michigan,” he said.  “Saw him there all the time.”

Seger’s song about life on the road, “Turn the Page,” approached the topic from the standpoint of a musician rather than a trucker.

C.W. McCall had his day, Morrow said, but Seger outlasted “nearly everyone.”

Kind Of A Brotherhood

However, “Convoy” is not a favorite of all truckers.

Phil Losinski, a jet fuel trucker for MG Oil who has been trucking for more than 30 years, said he likes to hum along with some of McCall’s songs – “Convoy” not being his favorite – but for his money, he’d rather listen to Dave Dudley.

“Dudley tells a really good story,” he said. “I find his songs much more interesting.”

Froehlich, though, pointed out that McCall’s songs are still resonating today, especially with the caravan of big rigs that recently drove across the country to the U.S. Capitol.

“People waving flags, and standing on bridges,” he said. “If trucks stopped going within a week, this country would be shut down.”

And that sentiment is much of the reason why McCall’s music still means so much to those who drive trucks, and those who rely on them.

“It’s kind of a brotherhood,” said Frame. “You’d meet people, which was part of the fun, and you have a camaraderie of doing the same thing and having the same interest. (McCall) understood the truckers.”

A not so routine CMV inspection uncovered the reason this driver was operating a CMV at 30 mph in a 65-mph speed zone…

Enforcement action was taken against the driver and the vehicle escorted to a safe location for repairs, it was placed out of service until the tires were replaced.  It appears the brake locked up on that axle, dragging the tires until worn like pictured. The driver did have multiple opportunities to stop for repairs and choose not to.

How to Hard-Boil Eggs So That They’re Actually Easy to Peel

Because no one has 15 minutes to spend peeling an egg.

Ask a dozen cooks how to hard-boil eggs and you’ll get a dozen different answers. But, ask a dozen cooks how to peel hard-boiled eggs, and you’ll get…tales of frustration. For a food that seems so simple to make (it’s just eggs + water!), boiled eggs can be utterly infuriating—especially when it comes to the peeling. You’ve been there: All that’s standing between you and egg korma (or egg salad) is a bunch of just-cooked eggs, and yet it’s taking you 15 minutes to peel each one and you’re removing huge gashes of egg white with every tiny shard of the stubborn shell. It’s enough to drive you mad, even if you aren’t already very, very hungry.

The truth of the matter is that making easy-peel hard-boiled (or soft-boiled!) eggs starts well before you get to the peeling. It begins with the eggs you choose, how you cook them, and how to treat them once your timer (yes, you must set a timer) dings. For eggs with cooked yolks set to your liking and pearly, smooth, unblemished exteriors, follow these guidelines:

How to hard-boil eggs

1. Don’t use super-fresh eggs. 

Farm-fresh eggs are going to be harder to peel—it’s a matter of their particular chemistry. To minimize frustration, save those straight-from-the-hen eggs for frying and scrambling and use a carton of slightly older eggs, like the ones from the grocery store, when boiling.

You can use cold eggs, straight out of the fridge, or room temperature eggs. Some argue that using cold eggs may cause the egg shells to crack due to thermal shock. We find the time saved by not tempering the eggs worth the gamble.

2. Drop the eggs into boiling water. 

Eggs that are added to a pot of boiling water rather than brought to a boil along with the cold water in the pot will be easier to peel. Plus, when you’re boiling eggs with the intention of jamminess—say, for soy-marinated eggs, this method allows for more precise timing. (Otherwise, you’ll have to watch closely to observe the exact moment the water comes to a boil.)

But don’t actually drop them in or you’ll risk eggs that are lopsided or deflated. Use a slotted spoon or spider to gently lower the eggs into the hot water. Then maintain a gentle simmer rather than a rolling boil so that they don’t knock around in the pot. 

Cook up to eight large eggs in a single layer in a 2-quart saucepan—more than that and they might butt heads and crack open.

3. Set a timer. 

To avoided the dreaded green ring that plagues overcooked eggs, setting a kitchen timer is a must. How long to cook those eggs depends on what level of doneness you’re going for. Set a 7-minute cook time for jammy eggs with set egg whites and firm but gooey yolks, or a 10-minute timer for cooked through (but not chalky). If you’re using XL or jumbo eggs, you’ll need a bit more time.

Using an ice bath helps halt the cooking process. Carry-over-cooking, be gone!

4. Use an ice bath. 

Unless you halt the eggs’ cooking, that timer was for naught. Set up a bowl of ice water while the eggs are cooking, then transfer them immediately when you hear the bee-bee-beep. Let the eggs hang out in the cold water until they’re just cool enough to handle, 2–3 minutes.

5. Peel the eggs under the water while they’re still slightly warm. 

This keeps the pesky shells—which should slip off fairly easily—contained. It also helps if you crack the egg at the fattest end, where you’ll find the air pocket, and peel from there. If you’re still having trouble, peeling eggs under a faucet with cold running water can help the shells slide off.

Keep any eggs you won't be using right away unpeeled, though—they’ll last longer that way!—and store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week.

(CNN) — Guests at a Kentucky hotel won't have to worry about who's watering their plants while they're away on vacation.

Elwood Hotel & Suites in Lexington will allow its guests to experience the "world's first plant-friendly hotel experience," according to a statement from VisitLEX, the city's convention and visitors bureau.

"It's official. Pets are the new babies, and plants are the new pets," VisitLEX said in its statement. "People everywhere now consider their leafy buddies to be part of the family just like a beloved dog or cat."

Plant-loving guests can enjoy a collection of "special rooms and amenities," the statement says. The "Gardener's Premier Corner Room," for example, is filled with a variety of live plants from a local nursery and features large windows to let visitors' own plants enjoy the sunshine, according to Elwood Hotel.

Walmart Is Training Its Own Fleet of Truck Drivers—And Touting Big First-Year Pay

Amid a nationwide truck-driver shortage, Walmart announced April 7 that it has started training supply-chain associates to be commercial truck drivers for the company's private fleet.

And to entice prospective drivers, the Bentonville, Ark.-based retail giant also said it's increasing trucker pay: Drivers can now earn as much as $110,000 in their first year with the company, Walmart stated.

"There’s never been a better time to join our fleet," Fernando Cortes, SVP of transportation for Walmart, and Karisa Sprague, SVP of supply-chain HR for Walmart, wrote in a blog post on the company's corporate website, adding that the newly announced investments in pay and training "build on multiple recent driver bonuses and improved schedules that enable drivers to spend more time at home."

Citing data from Glassdoor, Walmart said its pay bump means that first-year drivers can make nearly twice the average salary of around $56,500 for long-haul drivers. Longer-serving drivers can earn even more, depending on tenure and location, the company added.

The new Walmart Private Fleet Development Program, launched in Dallas and in Dover, Del., is training supply-chain employees through a 12-week program that offers participants the chance to earn their commercial driver's license (CDL) and become full-time Walmart drivers. 

"With a massive training infrastructure already built" through Walmart's Live Better U continuing-education offering and the company's national network of career-development academies, Cortes and Sprague wrote, "the Walmart learning ecosystem stood ready to help launch a driver pipeline program." Launching the driver training program was a matter of sourcing teachers, they stated: an issue addressed by training current Walmart drivers through Walmart Academies to become Certified Driver Trainers. 

Associates who earn their CDL through the Private Fleet Development Program also graduate with "a dedicated mentor to help them smoothly transition into their new role," according to the company.

In September, Walmart announced plans to hire 20,000 supply-chain associates for permanent roles in the company's Walmart and Sam's Club transportation offices, distribution centers and fulfillment centers. The company at the time touted that its average wage for its supply-chain workers stood at $20.37 an hour.
