I recently kicked off a solar power project at home to test the efficiency of two 100-watt, 18-volt bi-facial panels I picked up for $99 each during Prime week. The goal is to see how they perform in different areas of my property and learn how to optimize small-scale solar setups. I’ve added some essential tools to my kit—crimping tools, wire strippers, and connectors—and I’m running everything through a Bluetti AC180 inverter with a 500-watt MPPT controller. I chose to wire the panels in parallel to ensure that shading on one doesn’t compromise the output of the other. To monitor performance and energy usage, I’ve integrated TP-Link smart plugs, which also help me blend the solar output with my existing home setup. This project is part hands-on learning, part tech experiment, and I’m excited to see where it leads. Thanks for listening!

The Echo Frames 2nd Gen, which are sunglasses that double as headphones and can be controlled through Alexa, were also discussed. I have Edward Weniger, President, Alpha Bitcoin and local to Omaha. We discuss the advantages and disadvantages of mining Bitcoin at home and on a commercial scale. We note that while commercial mining operations have higher overhead costs, they also have the potential to generate more revenue. They also discuss the energy market in the United States, noting that Texas deregulated its energy market some years ago. Prices for energy have gone up since then, but the state still offers some advantages for miners.

Edward discussed the recent Ethereum hard fork and merge and expressed his opinion that the merge is a bad thing. They also talked about power consumption and how it is not profitable to mine Bitcoin at home.

We finish with some discussion about a Home Gadget Geeks meetup on May during Bitcoin day in Omaha. More details to come!
