Next up Jacob talks about his recent weekend out trail racing. It was a super cool experience with this trail running event allowing people to bring their dogs with them, he did a seven mile run and finished with a little gas left so he definitely wants to tackle a longer run next time! Jacob asked the crew what was their favorite thing they saw on the show floor this week during SHOT Show. Brayden tells us how cool it was to get his hands on his grail firearm – the Maxim Defense PDX. He also went by the FN and Springfield booth to see some really nice firearms that he’s had his eyes on. Dan’s favorite had to be hands down had to be all the tactical lever action firearms he got to see at SHOT Show however, it was a close between that and the lobster rolls!

Closing out we talk about Logan having to film the Donald Trump Jr. episode with no co host. Brayden was nervous as all get out not being able to monitor the audio levels during the recording but thankfully it all came out exactly as intended. Closing out we dive into how large of a scale things are at SHOT Show. There’s a ton of vendors from smaller mom and pop booths all the way up to the larger booths from companies like GLOCK. Brayden tells us all about how surprised he was to see just how giant some of these booths get with many booths having whole buildings built inside them. We also dive into our travel arrangements getting to Las Vegas, and hopefully home. With Boeing having some issues a good bit of flights have been canceled leaving out so fingers crossed we don’t get stranded in Las Vegas!!

Day two of the quota hunt opened up with an absolute rager of a storm. Hard rain, on and off lighting, and high winds made for a somewhat miserable hunt. We made a plan to wait a bit before heading out but then made our way to the blind just shortly before shooting light. Shooting light opened and ducks were absolutely everywhere. Group after group checked out the spread until finally a group came close enough to shoot at. We pulled up to shoot and Brayden finally got to kill his first duck! Toughing out the weather definitely ended up as a great idea for the group because the hunting picked up as the day progressed. Listen in to hear how the hunt turned out for the GoWild crew!

Up next Brayden dives into his recent weekend hunting. Thinking his season was over the weekend before he ended up being free for one more go at it. Armed with a crossbow in hand, which he definitely checked to make sure it’s set this time after his previous trip with the bow. He set out and found a nice tree to sit by for his hunt. He apparently was in squirrel city, every direction he looked it was squirrel, squirrel, squirrel! Brayden waited for a while and eventually had a couple deer swing through by him. Tune in to hear what happened while he was on this hunt. 

Closing out Derek talks about his hunt in Ohio for ducks. They drove up to hunt some public land timber, but an unfortunate timing of a massive cold front made these hunting plans difficult. A quick pivot had to happen so they headed to some private dry hunting to chase after some geese. They had decent numbers in the area but ended up just having to run traffic.

Up next Brayden dives into his recent quota hunt duck hunting! They headed out for the morning and drew for their spot to hunt. The first day they ended up with their number one spot that they wanted, but unfortunately the spot didn’t reflect what the map showed due to the fields not being flooded early enough! Loaded with new ammo and good spots they spent two days chasing waterfowl, how do you guys think they fared early season in western Kentucky chasing waterfowl?

Closing out we talk about nuisance animals like hogs. We dive into why Kentucky wildlife for a while didn’t want hogs shot at as a way to keep them from being educated by hunters. It’s a gray area in Kentucky on whether or not you’re allowed to kill a hog or not that definitely needs some clarification. We also talk about other invasive species such as lizards and snakes and how bounties have made some people actually breed the animals to collect the bounties. We also talk about how Kentucky Fish & Wildlife is bouncing around the idea to potentially ban cellular trail cameras. It seems the ban would only affect cellular cameras and not normal SD cameras for now but we all know that's a slippery slope once started. How do you guys feel about Kentucky banning cell cameras on public land?

Next up Dan tells us about his quota hunt at Taylorsville Lake. He saw a few does early but didn’t see a deer that he wanted to take while he was there. He ran into another public hunter who he had an interesting interaction with that had laid out some of the same places as him that he wanted to hunt, so they compared scouting notes and both found a good place to hunt! He bounced around a few spots but unfortunately kept running into non-hunters on this public property that ruined a few really nice potential spots.

Closing out Jacob tells us a quick story about finding a nice whitetail buck dead at a city park in Louisville while he was trail running. All the way back on the trail he spots a large group of vultures so naturally he goes to investigate what they’re back in there for. He then stumbles across a very nice whitetail buck that had been dead for a few days. It was a really nice mature 8-point buck that anyone would’ve been happy to take!

Next up Brayden dives into a new expenditure for himself – guiding a hunt! His uncle expressed some interest in hunting with him this season so he took him out for a nice evening rifle hunt overlooking a field into the woods. They got set up in their spot and the action started quickly with a buck cruising through the woods next to them, however they didn’t get enough of a view for a shot. Rain moved in on them so they decided to ease on out and they saw a ton of buck sign on the way out. Rub, after rub, after rub! They use the rain to cover them walking out and ease out slowly, when all of a sudden there’s a buck 15 yards from them! Tune in to hear how this encounter turned out!

Closing out Jacob gives a run down on his season so far which has been a bit of a bust including two misses by him that should’ve been a good buck down! He planned his recent weekend out hoping to turn his season around and have a little more luck! Early morning right after sunrise a couple of does came behind him and then circled back down the tree line. His plan was to swap spots after a little bit of time goes by, so he gets up and starts walking to the next spot when all of a sudden a buck comes out of the tree line! Unfortunately, he was caught completely out in the open with the sun shining right on him!! What do you guys think happens next?

Next up a little excitement, Arica gets a trail cam photo of a very nice buck while we were in the middle of filming this episode! She has quite a few nice bucks that she’s after this season but unfortunately this one cruised by while she wasn’t in the stand. She then dives into her recent hunting story about having a really nice buck come in while she’s on the stand – in bow range! You’ll have to listen in to hear what played out.!

Closing out Brayden dives into going out to deer camp with Tucker. The morning seemed to be full of deer movement with him hearing a good bit of shots on the public land bordering next to them. Tucker ended up having some success with a buck that he and Brayden then had to drag back out before cleaning because they didn’t want to ruin the area for the next day! He ended up going to a different spot the next day and enjoyed all the luxuries of a ladder stand that he hasn’t enjoyed in some while due to mostly bow hunting. He settled in nice and comfortable and before he knew it he could hear deer coming through the woods to him. He had some success very quickly, but you won’t believe how it turned out! The last trip out into the woods he saw a really nice buck that moved through a little too quickly, but thankfully went right over to Tucker and his dad, the buck was shot but the tracking job got a little complicated!

Next up Brayden talks about his recent hunting trip with Phil on a private farm that really just wants them to take some deer off of it. After tree hopping for a while he finally got settled in when not long after he got a text from Phil that a buck was coming across the field. Brayden drug some Tink’s 69 on the way in and Phil’s buck came in right on a line following the trail. Phil let an arrow fly on this buck and got a good blood trail to start with. Unfortunately, it started to dry up as the trail went on, all the way up to a neighboring property. He let it set overnight and after connecting with the land owner next door he continued his search but unfortunately came up empty handed.

Jacob covers a whole week of outdoor stories that he’s had the pleasure to collect here lately. His first story goes in depth of him chasing whitetail during bow season. The absolute perfect scenario comes to fruition with a really nice 8-point working a scrape line directly up to him. He drew back and…you’ll have to tune in to this episode to hear exactly what happened! He also spent some time in North Carolina on a fishing trip at Deep Creek in Great Smoky Mountain National Park. They had some awesome success starting with a nice brown trout and a few smaller ones as well. Fishing clear water creeks, he got some awesome fishing knocked out on this trip with some real trophy fish being reeled in. Circling back to whitetail he goes over his exciting weekend back chasing whitetail during rifle opener.

Closing out Derek dives into his recent hunting expenditures chasing whitetail. He let a really solid buck walk on opening day that he’s hoping he doesn’t regret later in the season. He gives a great description of his hunting spot to set the scene on just how close he let this deer walk for a second time a few days later! After spending some time watching a small forky chasing a doe back and forth a real nice buck makes his appearance. Make sure to tune in to this episode to hear how his hunt turned out!

Brad talks about the power of social media in the outdoor industry. Closing out Brad dives into his recent suburban tree farm hunting adventures. He’s been chasing a dandy of a buck, that if he shoots will be his best buck to date. He gets up in his stand and the movement starts early with a few small bucks cruising through by his setup. The next thing he knows, here comes his target buck! He hangs up a little far and dips out in the craziest way Brad’s ever seen. Brad assumed there was no way this deer was coming back but next thing he knows he’s right back within bow range. Next up Brayden goes into his recent weekend public hunting for whitetail. Complete with an awesome set of oaks to hunt, perfect wind, perfect weather, it was building up to be an awesome morning in the woods. Unfortunately, the morning hunt didn’t go as planned, but he and Phil had another plan to hopefully induce some success. They headed to an old tree orchard with perfect lanes, taking it slowly looking for deer. His first time ever hunting for whitetail on the ground produced some heart pounding moments. Make sure to tune in to see exactly how it all panned out. 

Closing out Brad talks about his recent weekend deer hunting. He had his slowest day yet, and still managed to see seven deer! Deer after deer after deer showed up on his afternoon sit. A few small bucks showed up with a few does including a real nice six-point that is going to be a stud in a few years. Next up Brayden goes into his weekend hunting the first cold front of the year. The temperatures were all over the place from sweating when arriving at the stand to cold by night. It seemed like the perfect recipe for a great evening of deer. The only caveat? The wind was all over the place which may have led to a slower evening of deer. Brayden’s new saddle setup caused him a little bit of a headache during the first sit this year but once he fine tunes his new setup it’s going to be super convenient for him, listen in to see what he changed on his setup this year. We talk about the best positions to sit in the tree saddle to be the most comfortable. We all have some interesting ways to get comfy but Dan’s may take the cake. He calls it the koala bear; you absolutely have to tune in to hear his description of this!

Closing out we talk about waterfowl hunting. Brayden and his crew were drawn for an absolute sweet duck hunting spot this year. We talk about just how different duck hunting is in different parts of the country and how everyone seems to hunt ducks a little differently. We talk about how waterfowl hunting is a different type of “fun” hunting. It’s often miserable when out in the woods but the good hunts always make good stories afterwards.

Next up Arica speaks on her recent interesting weekend and raves about Fit to Hunt’s bow strength program. Having some issues recently getting her bow back effectively she spent some time working out to help her bow strength. She’s seeing impressive results and has her bow dialed in with field points, now she’s working on broadhead accuracy. Hold on to your seats because we go off on a wild tangent about flat earth, warning systems, and if we’ll all be zombies by time this episode hits your ears.

Closing out Dan updates us on his Land Between the Lakes scouting trips for his upcoming hunt. He excitedly goes into details about checking his trail camera, you guys won’t believe what shows up on it! He checks out a new spot that looks super promising on an old logging road running atop a long ridge line. He has a perfect line of sight picked out and a hopeful way to keep other public hunters from coming into the area while he’s there. With good cell reception he’s already receiving photos that are promising. We also go over good practices for dragging out your deer this season safely. Make sure to keep hydrated, keep some calories in you, and take it nice and easy or better yet don’t forget the deer cart!

Next up Brayden dives into his recent trip taking a youth out for youth weekend. They headed out to a private farm that he’s done some scouting on and climbed in a blind in a primo spot. Setup next to a couple soybean fields but with unfavorable wind they hoped for the best. Listen in to see what kind of luck they had! Brayden loves taking youth out hunting and really believes it’s one of the most rewarding things you can do as an outdoorsman although he does have a few spots that are off limits for the newbies!

Derek talks about not shooting the first buck he sees in Kentucky, with only one buck tag he’d like to draw his season out. However, he has been kept pretty busy lately with waterfowl, bear, and whitetail in other states that may change for this season. He talks about his upcoming bear and deer hunt in Tennessee that he has been scouting for all summer long. He’s going to do a few local hunts first to work all the kinks out before he heads south to hunt.

Closing out the guys talk about the best way to get in and out of the woods. They go over the different ways they pack in and if they wear their saddle in or wait to put it on when they get to the tree. Next up Brayden goes in depth on his saddle setup for this upcoming season. He covers his new pack for carrying in his saddle equipment. He completely changed his setup for this season with a unique way to carry his climbing sticks in so they aren’t constantly in the way which allows him to go in with a smaller pack. He then dives into going over getting his bow back after being completely restrung this summer. He needed to shoot his bow around a hundred times before the final fine tune, can you guys guess how many times he shot it on the first day out? Let’s just say..mistakes were made. The second time out he realized a major difference in his bow that could’ve caused some really serious issues if not fixed before season! Crisis majorly averted.

Dan covers another trip scouting to Land Between the Lakes in Western Kentucky. He saw a good bit of deer sign but not a ton of rubs or scrapes in his first location to scout. The second spot looked a little more promising and he felt very good about it. Natural water sources, and on the edge of an old overgrown field it definitely has all the ingredients needed for a recipe of success.

We start out the episode talking about snakes, snake bites, and hypotheticals on what the crew would do in a snake bite situation. We’d all like to think we could grab the snake in that situation but really we’d all be high tailing it out of there. We talk about what happens after a snake bite and if all venomous snake bites actually inject venom into you. Brad talks about scouting during peak snake season and being absolutely on high alert the entire time while out in the woods. What do you guys do to make sure you’re avoiding snakes during peak season? Brad also talks about how a rookie mistake scouting using online maps cost him some serious elevated hiking! Quick tip, don’t forget to turn the elevation back onto your maps before you show up to go through the woods!

Next up Derek talks about his recent weekend and preparing for the upcoming hunting season. One last trip out on the boat fishing, now he’s got it put up for winter because his focus is completely shifted to hunting! A trip out scouting has left him with a mysterious bite on his arm, probably a spider, hopefully not a tick because it’s looking a little gnarly.! He does some scouting for the upcoming duck season especially for wood ducks, he spent some time on the WMA checking a few promising looking honey holes. We close out talking about public hunting. The general consensus is always you have to put in the work and the miles past where anyone else would go to have the best success but we have a conversation on if whitetail sometimes hang out closer to the road or where people walk in at. While there’s tons of success if you put in the extra miles we talk about success and deer signs for the people who decide to hunt closer to the road and how there’s success there.

We then dive into Dan’s upcoming draw hunt at land between the lakes. We talked about the kit for his trip, what he plans to take, and his plan on camping in his truck. He talks about checking OnX for his draw to see what his zone looks like; map wise he thinks it looks phenomenal. Dan and Brayden go into learning thermals for hunting and just how complicated it is but if done correctly can absolutely pay off. Dan mentions going scouting soon for his hunt, because he learned the hard way that scouting off of map images isn’t always what you expect it’s going to be!

Jacob speaks on his recent trip to Toccoa River in Georgia that he cannot recommend enough for a fun fishing trip. He fished both the upper and lower parts of Lake Blue Ridge catching some nice trout while wading in abnormally shallow water that he couldn’t quite figure out why the fish were hanging out in it. The next day he goes on a float trip with a group of guys, and it was absolutely painfully slow. Pro-tip make sure you float when the dam is turned on to make the trip go at a decent speed. 

Wrapping up the episode Dan updates us on his upcoming total eclipse plans for next year after searching high and low for a reasonable AirBnB. His awesome plans include being on a kayak in the middle of the lake for the eclipse, talk about an awesome experience!  Next up Derek tells all about his recent trip to Tennessee to scout for bears and fish! While bear scouting he found an absolute gem of a fishing spot that yielded an awesome time catching small mouths. Judging by the map this spot is rarely ever fished and he could definitely tell by how they reacted. The fishing was good enough that next year he’s already planning a two-day float trip down the river. He also spends some time talking about the tooth data of his bear he harvested in Colorado last year. Super interesting information on the average age of bears that were harvested in Colorado last season.

Closing out this episode Jacob talks about the trip with Craig Arnold the winner of the GoWild x Federal Ammunition sweepstakes and their weekend with Jim Gilliland. Talking about an eye opening experience learning tons of information, Jacob definitely has some easier ways to sight in his rifle this season! Jim gave some awesome tips on using a tripod in various shooting situations to create a shooting bench as well as some long range shooting pointers for Jacob and Craig.

 In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, we talk about music, fishing, and the upcoming whitetail season! Brad talks about his recent trip to Red River Gorge. He starts off telling us about some of his favorite moments on the trails of the Gorge that he spent some time hiking on. He then tells us all about discovering Tyler Childers real early in his career, including getting to watch him in small crowds, before he skyrocketed into the scene. He did some fishing at a pond near his cabin, this place looked like a complete hidden gem complete with bull frogs singing like crazy. Listen in to see how it turned out with him fishing it!

Jacob talks about his only fishing trip here recently to Florida where he caught some speckled trout and flounder but whiffed out on the red fish! Although he did chase a giant red fish around for a while but could never get a bite. He then pivots to talking about prepping his private land for this upcoming hunting season. Which includes moving a few trail cameras around to the edge of a nice soybean field, with a tree already picked out for a new stand location. Apparently he hit the right tree, because the photos started flying in of nice whitetail bucks.!

Do whitetails hate bears? Derek speaks on his trip and how he saw deer signs everywhere he saw signs of bears. His hypothesis is that there’s so few bears compared to deer that they don’t really bother each other. Would you think the bear population would deter whitetail from certain places?

The river really threw it all at it on this quick trip. It beat us up both mentally and physically but we toughed it out and everyone had some success. We learned the ins and outs of where the fish wanted to strike at, even if it wasn’t always convenient for us to hit those spots. This trip was definitely a doozy but Jason invited us back, next time for a longer trip, and we’ll definitely be going back!

Brayden spends some time talking about a recent camping trip, which was a muddy mess! The fishing was a little to be desired but the trip definitely turned out good for scouting. Brayden learned some lessons while trying to fish the currents in Driftwood River, when all along there was an oasis right around the corner!

Brayden & Dan talk about their favorite parts of Driftwood rIver, from the landscape, the fishing, and to the ends and outs of what they learned from the river. Brayden had an almost scary experience but managed to recover before things got too hairy. Dan covers some of his favorite gear to have while fishing, even if some of his modifications are questionable! The crew had a heart-pounding trip bowfishing these fish and while the fun factor is there they also touch on the other reason why this is such a good trip. What is the reason? Because of how invasive the carp have become here in the US. Carp have become a huge problem in many states, especially bad at Kentucky Lake. They cover exactly what wildlife management would like for you to do if you catch or shoot one.

They also did a little big-head carp fishing at night. The only downside to that?! Bugs! Arica was convinced that every bug in existence was around their boat!

Alex tells us all about Maine lobster fishing. He covers any and everything about lobsters! From what it’s like to be on a lobster boat fishing in the brutal cold of Maine to what time of year the lobsters taste the best! He talks about the legal requirements to be able to catch lobsters in Maine and what lobsters you can and cannot keep. Alex warns the guys just how dangerous the seas can be, both in itself and other territorial fishermen. He also spends some time talking about upcoming protections for right whales and how some of that may change the way lobster fishing is done.

Of course we then pivot to food; how can you talk about lobsters without talking about lobster rolls?! However, absolutely do not mention cream cheese when it comes to a lobster roll! Alex describes to the guys his perfect lobster roll, and even invites them up to Maine to personally craft one for them!

We also cover public hunting perception and how the atmosphere is changing. How do we get more people outdoors and hunting? Paul gives some great advice on how he thinks we can change the perception of anti-hunting and how we should showcase hunting vs how it currently gets displayed on social media. What do you think outdoorsmen can do to help promote the hunting industry in a positive light? Paul goes on to talk about getting to speak to a conservation science class in Ohio. We talk about just how important it is to bring that curriculum into both high school and grad school levels of education as the numbers of hunters declines. Bass fishing teams and national archery leagues are really making a positive impact in that space but how else could we get kids involved?

We pivot to discuss just how stupid a whitetail can be during turkey season. Literally they'll walk right up to your lap! Also, Paul tells a story about how he comes to a whitetail’s rescue; the second time's the charm, right? Derek went up to central Ohio to turkey hunt with our good buddy Paul Campbell of the O2 Podcast and How to Hunt Turkey Podcast. They hunted both private and public land, saw some birds, hunted a few different ways, and got real close to some toms … find out how they did. They follow two key tactics for killing birds: with your feet or with your seat. They also remind us that even if you’re calling and not hearing birds respond, they are still hearing you. How does vegetation affect hunting as the season progresses?

We also discuss how public land parcels are neglected and trashed by people. This may not be hunters or anglers doing it and it’s not the fault of the state wildlife agency; so who is creating these messes and what can we do about it?

Arica took her kids pond fishing and they got into some panfish. They’re planning a trip up to Michigan and are hoping to target pike, bass, and more. School gets out soon and they’ll be camping hard until the end of summer. Dan Johnson from Sportsmen’s Empire raises a great question about kids’ age and camping: how young is too young to take a big trip to somewhere like Yellowstone? At a young age, are they able to get around and will they even remember it? Can you train and condition kids to prepare for a big trip and long hikes?

Dan and Derek talk about the tags they’ve drawn already, are planning to draw, and hint at some of their fall hunting plans.

Brayden and Phil got back out on their private piece. They had some birds on camera and gave it one final shot. They fooled with some hens but didn’t find any toms. They also went back to the public property they’ve been hunting and tried to strike something up. They got some gobbles and put the stalk on. Have you ever heard a turkey double gobble? They got set up and had one come in full strut but had an unfortunate mishap … find out what happened!

The guys are planning a walleye fishing trip to Lake Erie along with attending the Walleye Festival. We swap some tips for catching walleye. While we’re on the subject of American history, we talked to Chris about hunting dogs. The settlers used dogs for everything from hunting big game to defending against attackers, but these hounds were a little different than the ones we see today. Chris also mentioned how some of the hound breeds were introduced to North America and developed over the decades.

Brayden and Phil have continued to get after it exploring a ton of ground but are having trouble getting a bird to commit. They’ve been finding birds but encountering some challenging scenarios. Dan Johnson is back on and gives some great advice for how/when you can get more aggressive when getting under roosted turkeys. We talk about some other late season tactics as the hunting gets tougher. 

Jacob got out and got aggressive too but it backfired on him. He accidentally set up too close to roosted birds and had to make a move to spin around but got busted by two toms. He moved into another spot but this time ran into a deer and a turkey that scattered away hard. It was a tough way to end his season, but now he’s confident next year will be better because he knows where the birds are hanging out. We also tease out some ideas of how you might be able to work a bird that was scared away.

Arica found a deer fawn in her yard. This is pretty early so the team ponders the whole sequence of the rut and poses some thought provoking questions. How can trail cams help predict peak rut?

We close the show with some random silliness. What is Derby pie? We all share our favorite pie and ice cream flavors. We also banter about the relationship between pooping and coffee.

In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, we’re continuing our talks about turkey hunting. This time, Dan, Chris, and Jacob got out on a public piece. They heard some gobbles and had a nice setup but ran into some issues with other hunters. They finished the day with some scouting and got a great lead for where to set up next time. We talk about etiquette when hunting turkeys on public land and how to handle other groups in the woods. Sometimes it’s better to have a chat and work together. How do you adapt and adjust when Plan A falls apart? We swap a few stories of the good, bag, and ugly on this troublesome topic. We also discuss some of the key differences between hunting public and private land. 

Brayden got out again and hunted an area he’s seen turkeys with lots of good sign. They were getting into their setup and then he realized he forgot one major item at home! They changed plans and managed to bring in a bird in the end, but didn’t punch the tag. They set up under a widowmaker and had a lively chance encounter with a woodpecker. How effective is scratching and scraping for bringing in turkeys?

Derek mentions a hot tip for where to find turkeys late-morning/mid-day after other hunters have been pushing them around. He got out and heard a lot of birds talking in the trees. It’s a tough spot to get in and set up but he made it work. He got a group to come in, they made a ton of noise but ended up getting hung up. He talks through the decision-making process and how to handle a multi-bird situation. He’s still struggling with something from that hunt … is it better to move slowly and quietly when a bird is close or move so quick it won’t have time to understand what’s happening? He also gives a good bit of advice for how to end a hunt on a high note, even when it doesn’t finish with a flop.

Jacob, Dan, and Chris hit a WMA. They set their sights on a pretty remote spot and found out there’s a reason why hunters don’t get back into those areas. They did a bunch of scouting and found a few birds but weren’t being stealthy enough and got busted. They left the area knowing where the birds are and will be coming back. 

Brayden got out with his uncle and some buddies too. They got a longbeard to shock gobble on the roost but then he went silent. They got some intel on a few other toms and quickly shifted gears. They planned an ambush and got in between several birds. They brought one in but made one critical mistake … find out what it was to avoid it on your next hunt! After that they decided to chase the other group of birds. They made a move and give a hot tip for keeping gobblers interested. Their sneak paid off and they took a shot, but it was a little too far. It was a great hunt nonetheless. What’s better: killing birds or the chase? We also talk about how much better turkeys can see and hear than we can.

Arica and her family went camping and had a better time without any tornado warnings. She reminds us how quickly prime camping spots get booked up. They set up a lemonade stand and were a huge hit at the campground. Starve Hollow State Recreation Area in Indiana comes highly recommended!

Jacob went turkey hunting and explored a large area to get a better handle on the terrain. He took a gamble and had some interactions with some gobblers … find out how it ended. Dan Johnson got back out and has been very pleased with what he’s seeing, with the turkey population making a comeback. He had a challenging morning but made the best of it and rolled a big one. He reminds us how beneficial it can be to call to and follow hens. We talk about the thrill of being so close to a gobbler and how the sound changes and has many more layers that you can feel. Have you had success backing off the call when the longbeard gets in close? What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen turkey do with a dead one on the ground? We also talk about a few non-traditional ways to kill a turkey.

Brayden went to a Luke Combs concert and had a comical run in with some backwards hat-wearing Instagram cowboys … find out how he saved their day. There were several other up-and-coming country music stars on stage and everyone put on a great show. He’s getting ready for turkey hunting season and trying to get some birds on camera. 

Arica grabbed some concert tickets for a special Christmas show. She went camping with her family and went looking for morel mushrooms but didn’t find any. Is it really spring camping without a tornado warning? They decided to pack it up and get to safety. They dodged it but there was an F3/F4 tornado that touched down just north of them. We talk about how much camping has changed since the pandemic. She’s getting ready for another camping adventure and is getting help from the guys about which bass baits to bring along.

Dan Johnson from Sportsmen’s Empire is our featured guest once again, this time to talk about many of the new proposed rules and regulations around hunting. Dan talks through some of the issues and lets us know what’s happening and why hunters should be concerned. He talks about companies hiring lobbyists to push new hunting laws for the companies to make money. He also poses some difficult questions, like should we have a firearm season on whitetails during the rut, what role do wildlife managers serve, and who is really making these laws. He mentions you should contact your local representatives to share your opinions whether you support or disapprove of any new bills. Another great resource for hunters to stay “in the know” is by joining and supporting Sportsman’s Alliance. Hunters, anglers, trappers, and outdoorspeople should equally get involved with their state wildlife management agency to voice their concerns and express their wishes.

Dan questions what it really means to be an “expert” at something. He asks Brayden about his journey into becoming a fly angler and Brayden mentions his easiest and hardest parts of transitioning from bass fishing to fly fishing. Dan also talks about the challenge of having interviewed over 1,000 podcast guests and shares his experience from the recent Iowa Deer Classic tradeshow and what makes it one of the best. He recounts his glory days as a whitetail antler shed hunter and drops a bombshell bone-finding tip. He also gives us his no-fail, dummy-proof longbeard-flopping guide to killing turkeys.

Brayden set up his new rod and reel and is gearing up for a fly fishing trip with several GoWild members. He started with the Orvis Encounter rod/reel combo but is now scaling up to a DIY setup. Jacob paid off some of his marital debt to be able to join them on the trip! He also mentions his favorite flies to use this time of year.

Brad celebrated his daughter’s birthday and spent the weekend elbow deep in unicorns and rainbows. Dan mentioned how he got his young daughter a cell phone–and why he instantly regretted it! Brad is considering a questionable method of fleshing his whitetail deer hides. We bring up one of the biggest problems of having a big freezer full of wild game meat and debate over how long frozen meat is good for. We tease out some things to do with meat that’s been in there for a while and Derek drops his favorite beaver meat recipes. Brad bumps into a bonehead who broke into our trailer at the office and he recently competed in a PineWood Derby race with his son.

Jacob went fishing, of course, and went after trout and smallmouth bass. Bryaden got out to fish as well, and posed a question about the color of crawfish and water temperature.
