Three Stories and a Sign-Off

This week we have a little bit of sad news. After much discussion and consternation, I and my sisters have decided to put How in the HELL Did I Get Here on hiatus. We might be back and we might not.

This wasn’t an easy decision, but life changes and it just seems like the right thing to do for right now.

I want to say a huge thank you to you, our listener… and a huge thank you to my sisters for indulging my dream of creating this podcast. It wouldn’t have been possible without either you or the sisters. So, thank you so much. Seriously, the support you’ve given us and the fact that we have people listening from around the world every week still blows my mind and fills me with awe and gratitude.

And, if you really miss me, you can find me at my other podcast the Fall in Love with Yourself Toolkit where I’m dishing out advice for your week, and other fun information. You might even hear a sister or two over there from time to time.

For the time being, you can still catch us on Fridays on How in the HELL Did I get here Shorts which are stories pulled from the archives of How in the Hell did I get here. The plan is to keep that going for as long as it makes sense, so for you die-hard fans you can still get your fix on Friday mornings.

We have a really special show about someone who was a really special person. My friend and former boss, Adrienne Weinstein. She’s not with us anymore, but she left an indelible mark on my life during the 16 years we worked together. She and Faye, who was my employee, were my “Jewish mothers’ and man, did we have some funny adventures. Think of us as Lucy, Ethel and Ethel and you never knew which one of us was going to be Lucy, but a lot of the time, it was Adrienne.

Sadly, we lost Adrienne in 2005 and today’s show is dedicated to her and is all about her, with stories and memories from my other Jewish mother, Faye and Adrienne’s son’s Chad and Josh.

A special thank you to Adrienne’s sons, Chad and Josh for joining us this week to share memories of their mom.

Dr. Chad Weinstein is hardly the underachiever he claims to be. He is founder and president of Ethical Leaders in Action, and you can find his excellent book, “Thinking Aloud: Reflections on Ethical Leadership” on Amazon!

The Ghost Child in Apt 302

If you’ve listened to the show before, you might know that myself and my four sisters consider ourselves to be witches, yep we have our own coven. Lol

And in fact, our six time great grandma was actually convicted in Salem as a witch back in the 1600’s, so we do come from an actual accused witch and not only that, we all 100% agree that we grew up in a haunted house and that we all seem to have more than our fair share of paranormal encounters, excitement, and abilities.

Crazy Larry Rides Off into the Sunset, Happy Trails, Dad

In these times of quarantine and social and physical distancing and all that’s going on, I’m not going to lie, it’s been tough for myself and I’m sure for anyone who can’t be with the people they love most when a loved one passes. In our case, this is what happened when Crazy Larry also known as Dad, died last month on March 25. There’s been no funeral, no way to get together, other than on Zoom, no way to sit in a crowd and share funny stories and sing and listen to his favorite songs, no way to gather together at all and, frankly, it sucks.

If you’ve heard any of these stories before now, you know that Crazy Larry earned his name for a reason…we also called him Yosemite Sam and as much as we loved him and put up with him… he was a complicated person and a loose cannon… you just never knew who you were going to get with him, which kept us all on our toes.

Since today would have been Crazy Larry’s 80^th birthday and in honor of him, we’ve pulled together this collection of stories for your listening enjoyment.

Has your doctor ever encouraged you to improve your health by losing a few pounds? If so you will be able to relate to Aoife Larking my guest on this week’s podcast. It’s fair to say that Aoife’s doctor cut straight to the point when announcing that if Aoife didn’t do anything about her eating habits that her friends and family would be carrying her out in a box! Harsh, shocking words that hit home to Aoife that shook Aoife into taking action and finding sanctuary with Slimming World. Aoife was 25 stone 9lb when she stepped on the scales at her 1st weigh-in and has had an astonishing weight loss of 14 stone 10lb. Aoife's weight loss and her mobility around the stairs in her home resulted in a fall midway through her weight loss journey but this didn’t stop Aoife. After falling on her staircase suffering a break to her pelvis, tailbone and fractured femur Aoife didn’t give in and the weight loss continued.

A walking challenge came Aoife’s way and with improved fitness, she agreed after all Aoife explained: “it was just a walk”. Aoife had, in fact, agreed to climb the highest mountain in Ireland “Carrauntoohill”, and with no training, after all, it was just a walk Aoife well and truly conquered the mountain! From feeling breathless after walking 3 steps of her staircase to thousands of steps Aoife has come such a long way in more ways than one. Another wonderful lady sharing her story to inspire you into taking action….what are you waiting for!

The Amazing Adventures of Crazy Larry

It’s been quite a week, right? We’ve got quarantines and Covid19 and working from home and it almost feels like we’re waking up in a different world every day.

The day I recorded this intro, Wednesday March 25, 2020, I did wake up to a different world when I woke to the news that the man we call Dad, Crazy Larry or Yosemite Sam had died at home during the night. He had not been well for a long time and this wasn’t exactly unexpected, but it also wasn’t exactly expected either.

She's a Cupcake Baked by Satan

When you come from a big family, you end up with a lot of nieces and nephews, which is really a wonderful thing. Today’s story was recorded with four out of five sisters… we missed you, Erin and features our sister Skye.

Skye is the youngest in our family and has a very full life… you may have heard her on the two Virtual Party episodes we aired back in September of 2019. She’s a great story teller and you don’t want to miss this collection of cute, shocking, scary and astounding stories all about her adorable and precocious daughter Taryn… from Taryn being possibly possessed by demons to Taryn telling her new friends at the park that she has a meth lab at home. Bus Driver, Bathroom Biff, Birthday Magic

If you’ve listened to the show, it’s pretty apparent that we love stories, which is why we do the podcast. Personally, that’s why I started the podcast because I love listening to and telling stories.

No Way I'm Shaking Your Hand, You Just Played for the Yankees!

What happens when you take an Uber and the driver starts sharing some really far-out stories about what takes place while driving for Uber? You invite him on the show… of course!

Today, you’ll be hearing two stories from one of my favorite Uber drivers, Fred Johnson. Fred is more than just an uber driver, he’s a great storyteller and the producer of BackSeatVideos, which are clever and entertaining videos he makes with his passengers while he drives around LA. Yep! He gets into all kinds of bizarre discussions with his riders.

As usual, today's episode contains swear words. And the first story Fred shares includes some very X rated behavior by a passenger. It’s amazing what some people think is OK to do in an Uber. This was definitely so not OK. Lucky for us, Fred turns it into a hilarious story!

Uncle Batman to The Rescue, and Pardon My French

Whether it’s visiting family or visiting a foreign country, it seems that myself and my sisters have a knack for finding ourselves in hilarious and often multiple how in the hell did I get here moments. We have two stories today about that.

First Jenny shares a hilarious story about a time when she was about 14 and away from home for a summer stay at our funny aunt Katie, our uncle dick and our cousins Kristie and Tracy. This is one time I’m glad you can only hear a podcast and not experience the other senses like smell for instance. This just a short story, but it’s damn funny.

Then, I tell Erin all about my adventures… which include being trapped in a self-cleaning restroom... during a trip to Paris.

You Can't Beat a Good Bucket

I don’t know about you, but I’m not really that big a fan of surprises… especially when they, well, surprise you! Like in a startling way. We have three stories today from three different sisters, myself, Kari and Jenny, about times we were surprised… sometimes in that startling way, sometimes in a delightful way and sometimes in a what in the hell is happening sort of way.

In the first story, I’m startled three times by three different animals, as you’ll hear, you’ll also have the enjoyment of listening to all my sisters laughing at me (with me?) on this one since we were all together on a Zoom call that day.

Then Kari shares a great story about a time Jack surprised her on her birthday. Also a quick warning, do not use this episode as a drinking game for every time we say a certain word.

In our last story, Jenny, always the animal lover, adopts a new collie and is more than a little surprised at some of his moves.

All I Want for Christmas is Flu

Every family has cherished holiday traditions and of course ours is no exception… back when everyone still lived in the Midwest and the nieces and nephews were still little, one tradition we enjoyed was to get together with the whole big extended family for Christmas. This gathering was usually either just before or just after the holiday and up until the year 2000, we had been doing that at our mom and dad’s …, but in 2001, we had about 25 people now in the family and it was just too much for our parent’s home to handle… especially in the dead of winter… when EVERY ONE is in the house whether you want to be or not! Lol

So in 2001 we decided to break with tradition and have our Christmas celebration somewhere else – it was the first and only time we did that – not that it was a bad experience or that the location had anything to do with what happened that year and we had no idea that that year was going to be a true Christmas to remember… but not really for reasons you might think.

Maggie's Christmas Story or How St. Nick Met St. Mick

So, do you ever find yourself saying yes to something – not because you really want to do that thing – but more so so you can tell the story later? Our first story today, as told by me is about my tendency to do that very thing… say yes so I can tell the story later!

Our second story is about what happens when you try to record a sister who has said yes too many time to vodka and now cannot stay on the track of the story I’m trying to tell her, but it derails in a pretty funny and wonderful way, so we’re including it here today.

Lastly, Kari shares a story about what can happen when you meet some new friends on vacation and say yes and the places you can end up when you do.

For the Record, I Have Never Had my Toe Stuck in a Beaver!

In late August, 2007 – the weekend of the 18^th and 19^th to be exact , Minnesota broke the 24 hour rainfall record when just over 15 inches of rain came pouring down in southeastern Minnesota. This was pretty close to where we all grew up and extremely close to the beautiful hobby farm where Jenny, her husband Bill and their three children lived then.

'Almost everyone in our family had gathered that weekend at the farm to celebrate our mom’s birthday, nobody had any idea that a storm of epic proportions was about rain down for the next 24 hours or that they would all be trapped there together.. about 29 people give or take... for the weekend.

It was a crazy, funny, soggy, slippery and true how in the hell did I get here family get together. Stay with us.

Our Lives Flashed Before Our Eyes During the Avalanche... of Bubbles

If you’ve been listening, you know that we are part of a big family… I’m the oldest of 7 in a family of five girls and two boys and our mom was the oldest of eight in a family with 3 brothers and 5 girls and these were the people who taught us that if you weren't laughing at life's craziness, you were doing it wrong.

A big extended family also came with other perks – one was cousins! And, lots of them! Two, we had big family get-togethers filled with lots of laughter, smart-assery and shenanigans and three, our summers were filled with staying with our cousins at their various houses or having them come to stay with us! I’d venture a guess that for a lot of us cousins in our large extended family, those family swaps during the summer months hold some of our best and most unforgettable memories. We didn’t go on family vacations, so going to a cousin’s house in the far off land of Wisconsin for a stay was a big deal!

Today’s episode as told by our sister Erin and our cousin Heather is about one of those summer stays with our Aunt Annie, who was, as Heather calls her… “the fancy aunt”. I’m going to take a moment to give Annie a should out and wish her a belated 75th birthday! I saw her not that long ago and she’s still our fancy aunt who still knows how to have good time!

Story 1: Growing up in a haunted house can make you feel like your losing your mind! There always seemed to be things happening that just didn’t quite make sense and all seven of us kids learned to cope by keeping our lips zipped and pretending that things were okay…Jenny shares two terrifying memories from when she was just a little kid!

Story 2:The house we all grew up in was large, it was an old Victorian that was built in around 1880 and had a distinctly Gothic vibe especially after our mom painted it a shade of gray that was almost black, but it was still only a 3 bedroom 1 ½ bath house and we had 7 kids, 2 parents and an assortment of dogs, cats, birds, and more living there, we also had the most kids on the block, so our house was the headquarters for every kid in the neighborhood – it was also, as you’ve heard, haunted as hell. Kari tells a story of something that somehow moved in the night.

Story 3: Our last story is all about the man in the house… and no, I’m not talking about Crazy Larry, also known as our dad… no there was another man and both Jenny and Kari had startling and scary encounters with him!

Happy October! If you’ve been listening, you might have heard that every episode this month is going to be all about creepy things, haunted houses, scary entities, unexplainable phenenoma, paranormal oddities and more!

If you’ve been following the show, you know that myself and my four sisters are pretty tuned in. I’ve been experiencing paranormal interactions since I was a little girl and am also highly intuitive and receive messages from beyond the grave, among other things. Kari (as you heard in our useless psychic episodes, sometimes has literal dreams that come true, as well as having the unique ability to tune into other’s physical pain. Jenny has a way of finding and experiencing the craziest paranormal and unexplainable shit, Erin is super empathetic and can tune into people, places and animals – she reads energy very well and lastly, our sister Skye’s kids know better than to try and pull anything over on her… she has the all-seeing eye and she can spot a bullshitter a mile away...lol!

So today, we have one story, as told by in three parts by our sister Erin and it’s recent! These events are only a couple of months old and as you’ll hear, we actually had some strange shit literally go down while we were recording this episode!

"Adrienne" A Classic How in the Hell Did I Get Here Woman

We have a really special show about someone who was a really special person. Today, we’re going to talk about my friend and former boss, Adrienne Weinstein. She’s not with us anymore, but she left an indelible mark on my life during the 16 years we worked together. She and Faye, who was my employee, were my “Jewish mothers’ and man, did we have some funny adventures. Think of us as Lucy, Ethel and Ethel and you never knew which one of us was going to be Lucy, but a lot of the time, it was Adrienne.

Sadly, we lost Adrienne in 2005 and yesterday would have been her 79th birthday. Today’s show is dedicated to her and is all about her, with stories and memories from my other Jewish mother, Faye and Adrienne’s son’s Chad and Josh.

A special thank you to Adrienne’s sons, Chad and Josh for joining us this week to share memories of their mom. Dr. Chad Weinstein is hardly the underachiever he claims to be. He is founder and president of Ethical Leaders in Action, and you can find his excellent book, “Thinking Aloud: Reflections on Ethical Leadership” on Amazon!

I'm really proud of this week's episode, which airs August 8, 2019, and hope you'll give a listen. It's a very special episode for a couple of reasons... first of all, August 8, 2019 is the day myself and my sisters chose as D- Day when we started the podcast as the date we would decide if we wanted to keep doing the podcast!

And, it would have been our (myself and Kari's) dad's 79th birthday on this airdate. He is a big reason I have had a life-long love of broadcasting and also a huge inspiration for me doing this podcast!

He died when he was 28 and I was 6. But, he lived a very full and amazing life in those 28 years, this week's episode is a tribute to him and it would be an honor for me if you listen.

The Fart Heard Around the World, Tased & Confused, In Trouble with the Law (Again)

This week we bring you stories of life’s mortifying moments, as only could happen to us. In our first story, I’m at a company Christmas party when something happens that is so unexpected and embarrassing that I have to decide how I’m going to manage this How in the hell did I get here moment?! In our second story this week, Jenny is working second shift, which means a late night walk to her car. However, there’s something different about this night… she’s parked far away in a scary and unfamiliar ramp. In our last story, Kari takes us back to high school and shares a story she’s never told anyone, until now!

Crazy Date Night, Hawaiian Curse, Poison Control

Today we bring you three stories of things not quite going the way we expected and the hilarious and interesting results.

In our first story, Jenny and her husband Bill have a date night and end up at Target… where all the best date nights end, right and also where Jenny sees something she’ll never forget.

Next up in story number 2, I’m in Hawaii visiting my good friend Chris and recovering from a series of How in the Hell Did I Get here moments, when all of a sudden, I feel very aligned with the Brady Bunch and what happened to them when they visited Hawaii. They ended up cursed! Well, guess what, it happened to me, too!

Pregnant Cat, Gunshot Wound, Christmas Present

Quick note: Today’s episode includes swearing. And we apologize for the uneven sound quality this week… we had some technical difficulties.

We might not have been the most conventional family on the block...

One of the things that happens in our family is a chronic under-reaction to crazy things that most people would most likely have somewhat of a bigger reaction to.. like, say, a gunshot wound, otherwise known as a GSW.

In our family, we hardly bat an eye because it’s just one more crazy thing, right?

Especially if no one dies or is seriously injured – maybe its because we come from such a large family – 7 kids, so there’s more possibility of crazy things happening more often OR maybe it’s because we’ve all become used to dealing with the man we call Crazy Larry, also known as our dad.

Useless Psychic Abilities

What does the IRS, a traveling petting zoo and an old-fashioned popcorn machine have in common?

Really, not a helluva lot… unless you’re Kari in the spring of 1990.

In her first story, she’s in what she thinks is BIG TROUBLE with the IRS and she’s trying to figure that all out when she has a dream… a literal dream and a strange dream about finding desks in the woods and a strange set of numbers… it’s kooky enough that she remembers it when she wakes up and takes some action.

In our second story, Kari has another dream, just one night after the first dream. This dream just seems like one of those entertaining, but normal, night-time dreams with some fun plot twists and a crazy cast of characters… and she doesn’t really give it much thought until what happens later that same day.

There's really no explanation for what happens to Kari in our third story...not much time has passed since the entertaining dream and now Kari has a premonition while cleaning the popcorn machine at the bar she works at..why? We don’t know.. but it was accurate and significant - especially for fans of the 70s’ and 80’s TV show, Alice.

I do want to mention that if you haven’t listened yet to Episode 2, you might want to do that so you can meet the sisters… this stuff comes naturally to well, pretty much all of us!

Fun Grandma, Lesbian Vacation, 7 F*cking Teepees

NOTE: Today's Episode is in honor of this badass, sassy, take no prisoners, party until she’s says stop, tough as nails and fun as hell grandma, who I’m sure is having a cold one, raising hell, and telling all her best dirty jokes right now.

RIP Grandma Pat: 1926-2019

Life truly is an an adventure and it’s probably no surprise that myself and my four sisters seem to have more adventures than normal! After all, the show’s not called How in the Hell did I get here for nothing!

Today’s episode is in honor of our maternal grandmother, Grandma Pat, who is featured in our first story. She was truly remarkable… a mother of 8, a grandmother of many including three great, great, great grandchildren. Sadly we lost her in early February of 2019, less than 48 hours after this podcast went live and I like to think she hung around to see it happen. They broke the mold after Grandma was born, you’ll understand what I mean when you hear our first story which happened at a family party a long time ago.

In our second story, I find myself divorced and ready to go on a vacation! So, I do the logical thing… find a women’s travel adventure company and book myself on an adventure to Cozumel (side note, have you noticed when I go to Mexico crazy things happen to me? Um yeah!) It turns out to be a great trip, but little did I know the adventure would start before I even got on the plane!

Everyone loves a good garage sale, right? In our third story today, Erin decides to throw the Mother of all garage sales and the prep takes weeks! I’m there to help out and it’s going great... until the day she tells me that we have to set up seven teepees…. Let me repeat that: seven teepees…. On the lawn…. In 98 degree heat….

Ex-Lax, Alarming Groin, Parasailing

Travel can be a lot of things and of course, when one of us taking a trip... things can get to How in the Hell did I get here? pretty quick!

In today's Episode, Erin learns the importance of thoroughly reading the directions during a this 12-hour endurance test.

Next, Kari just wants to get home to join in the graduation celebrations of a niece and nephew... the question is will she even get on the plane after an alarming encounter with the TSA?

Lastly, Kim is on her first trip out of the country (yes, the same trip where she was also held hostage by a monkey in Episode 3!) where she tries parasailing. They say what goes up, comes back down... well, eventually yes, but not without a lot of excitement for her in the air!

Monkey Dog, Pig Pony, Monkey Hostage Situation

We've all had strange encounters with animals... maybe a bat swoops through your living room, a deer jumps in front of your car, or a mouse runs up to you in the kitchen, and in true How in the Hell did I get here fashion, sisters Jenny Gardner, Kim A. Flodin, and Erin Beach take it up a notch in this episode featuring three stories of strange encounters with animals.

In the first story, Jenny shares the time she had a real-life sighting of Monkey Dog! What's a monkey dog you ask? Listen in to find out!

In the next story, Kim, Jenny and Erin share a harrowing tale of a dark and misty night at Jenny and family's hobby farm. What was that thing shuffling and snorting in the shadows? Is it dangerous? Will it eat the dog? Will anyone ever respond to Erin's screams of terror?

In our final story, Kim ventures out of the country for the very first time and finds herself in a hostage situation... with a monkey!

All About a Donkey (and meet the sisters!)

Kim introduces her four sisters in this episode featuring Kari Flodin, Jenny Gardner and Erin Beach.

Kari's husband Jack was a pretty special guy and when he came up with the idea of getting a pet donkey, he and Kari had a good laugh and carried on... but only until September of 2018, when we lost Jack.

When Jack passed, Jenny, Erin and Skye flew from the Midwest to Florida to be with Kari and almost her new pet donkey! Can you have a donkey in the guestroom? Does she need a goat now, too? Would they end up at Donkeys are Us? Listen now to find out.
