This study examines Galatians 4:1–20 as Paul continues his argument that the Mosaic Law was temporary — a guardian preparing God’s people for Christ. With Christ’s coming, believers move from slavery under the Law to sonship through the Spirit. Paul warns the Galatians that returning to observing the Law’s calendar and regulations is a regression into bondage promoted by the Judaizers. He appeals personally, reminding them of their former love for him and expressing pastoral anguish until they fully grasp the sufficiency and completeness of salvation in Christ alone.

In this study of Galatians 3:15–29, we examine Paul’s argument that the promise to Abraham was fulfilled in Christ and cannot be nullified by the Law given 430 years later. Paul vs. Peter: The Most Important Confrontation in the Early Church

Galatians 2:11–21

In Galatians 2:11–21, the Apostle Paul recounts one of the most significant moments in early church history: his public confrontation with the Apostle Peter in Antioch. This was not a personal dispute, but a theological crisis that struck at the very heart of the gospel itself.

Peter had been freely eating and fellowshipping with Gentile believers. However, when certain men from Jerusalem arrived, Peter withdrew out of fear and separated himself. His actions implied that Gentile believers were somehow spiritually inferior unless they adopted Jewish customs and practices. Paul recognized immediately that this behavior contradicted the truth of the gospel and publicly rebuked Peter for it.

At the core of Paul’s argument is the doctrine of justification by faith alone. Both Jews and Gentiles, Paul explains, are sinners and stand equally in need of salvation. No one is declared righteous by works of the law—whether Mosaic law or any system of human effort—but only through faith in Jesus Christ.

Paul then moves beyond the confrontation and gives one of the most profound theological statements in all of Scripture:

“I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.” (Galatians 2:20, NASB 1995)

Here, Paul describes what it means to be “in Christ”—a complete union with Christ in which the believer’s old identity is replaced by a new life grounded entirely in faith. Salvation is not achieved by human obedience, moral effort, or religious performance, but by participation in the life, death, and resurrection of Christ.

Paul concludes with a powerful and emotional declaration:

“I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through law, then Christ died needlessly.” (Galatians 2:21)

If righteousness could be gained by anything we do, then the cross was unnecessary. But because salvation is entirely an act of divine grace, Christ alone is the foundation of our hope.

This passage stands as one of the clearest and strongest affirmations in the New Testament that salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

The next morning after illegal trial of Jesus, the Sanhedrin gathered to officially render judgment against Him. Judas was remorseful because of the outcome and went to return the money. The leaders rejected this gesture from Judas; and so, he threw the money in the temple and hung himself. When Jesus arrived before Pilate, the leaders brought many accusations against Him. Pilate was amused at how Jesus remained quiet throughout the barrage of accusations against Him. Knowing that the leaders brought Jesus because of envy, Pilate tried to have Jesus released. He was not successful in his efforts, so he had Jesus scourged and crucified. The Roman soldiers then took Jesus and mocked Him as the King of the Jews and afterwards led Him out to be crucified.

After three hours of intense prayer, Jesus woke His disciples, because Judas had come with a band of soldiers. A brief skirmish took place, but Jesus prevented any escalation and allowed Himself to be arrested. He is then led to the home of the high priest Caiaphas, where s late night (illegal) pre-trial is convened. Since Jesus refused to defend Himself, the high priest placed Him under oath and Jesus affirmed that He was indeed the Messiah and the Son of God. Because of His claim of divinity, they judged Him guilty of blasphemy and deserving of death. But watching from afar was Peter, who was accused of being with Jesus. Peter denied knowing Jesus three times and was shocked into remembrance of Jesus saying to him that he would do so when a rooster crowed.

After Jesus’s denunciation of the leaders and warning of Jerusalem’s destruction, His disciples seek to understand His prophetic words about the destruction of the temple and the future setting up of the kingdom. Jesus began by giving them a general overview of increasing despair as the world moved towards the time of the Tribulation and then provided them a sign to signify when the kingdom would be set up. However, He continued to teach and warn them to be prepared of another event that will take place without a sign - the Rapture, which will catch many unprepared. And thus, He emphasized the need to be prepared for this unknown, unannounced day of His coming.

Chapter 23 concludes this section of the “testing of the Lamb (Jesus)” with Him condemning the religious leaders for their pride and hypocrisy. Here Jesus pronounced seven woes upon the pharisees and scribes leading to His ultimate pronouncement of judgment. In His final words, Jesus laments over Jerusalem and declares that He will not return again until they accept Him as Messiah.

Chapter 22 continues with the overall theme of testing. But before, this Jesus continued His parabolic teaching to the leaders indicating how that their rejection of Him will lead to the kingdom being offered to others and their destruction. After this, differing groups came to Jesus to question Him to entrap or find reasons to condemn Him. The Pharisees and the Herodians tried to stir up trouble with the common people or the Romans. The Sadducees challenged Him concerning the resurrection of the dead. The lawyer questioned Him on the greatest law of the Mosaic Covenant. Answering all of their questions, He shut their mouths and proved His wisdom, knowledge and Messianic authority. The Lamb indeed was spotless. Jesus concluded with His own question about the true nature/Person of the Messiah to the which they were unable to answer.

Jesus now enters into Jerusalem, presenting Himself as the rightful King of the Jews. Fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah, He enters Jerusalem riding on a donkey. The next day Jesus entered the temple and for the second time cleansed it. During these last days of Jesus before His crucifixion, He is tested by the religious leaders, fulfilling Moses instructions of testing the lamb (Exodus 12). The leaders question His authority and Jesus responds with His own challenges. Ultimately, He declares their rejection (barren fig tree) and destruction (parable of the landowner).

Continuing with the principle of “the last shall be first and the first, last”, Jesus continued teaching His disciples in a parable. The point He was making was that, He would appoint those to serve Him throughout the church age and would reward them just as He rewarded the twelve apostles. As He headed toward Jerusalem, again He reminded them of His upcoming death and resurrection. On their way, James and John request superior positions in the kingdom and Jesus corrects their understanding of what it means to be great in the kingdom. Greatness is attained by suffering. True greatness is to serve and not be served. The problem with the disciples concerning this is that they were blind. Hence, Matthew’s recording of Jesus healing of the two blind men.

Leaving Galilee, Jesus now heads toward Jerusalem where He will be crucified and raised from the dead. Along the way, He is questioned about divorce by the pharisees and provides valuable teachings on the priority and permanence of marriage. Even though His words are difficult to receive, He continues by teaching that His disciples should always be like children. Leaving there, Jesus is approached by a wealthy man, desiring to be assured that he is qualified to be in the kingdom. Jesus’ words caused this one great sorrow and questions from His own disciples as to who can be saved. He informed them that this can only come by the enablement of God. And finally, He encouraged His disciples that even though for now they were suffering for His name, in the future kingdom, they would be richly rewarded.

After returning from the region of the Gentiles, Jesus is once again confronted by the religious leaders, asking for a messianic sign. Jesus rejected their request and warned His disciples of the false teachings of those leaders. He then continued to ask about what the people and the disciples themselves thought of Jesus. Peter made a great confession that Jesus was not only Messiah, but also God. After these things, Jesus began to teach His disciples even further of what His ministry entails. Peter refuses this and Jesus began to teach about what it truly means to be His disciple.

Chapter 12 begins a pivotal moment in the ministry of Jesus. It is the national rejection of Jesus as Messiah by the leaders. And because of this, Jesus withdraws His offer as Messiah to the nation and begins to speak of a new “mystery” kingdom”. So, Israel will not receive the kingdom at this time, but instead, a kingdom that was not foretold will now be birthed. Jesus reveals the nature of this “new mystery kingdom” (the church) by way of speaking in parables. The Parable of the Sower becomes the foundation to understanding this new kingdom.

In the previous section of chapter 12, we saw where the pharisees were rejecting Jesus because of what He was doing on the Sabbath and that they had determined to kill Him. In this last section, a mute, demon-possessed man is brought to Jesus and He heals him. This sets of great wondering of whether of not Jesus was truly the messiah as He said. The pharisees began stirring up the people against Jesus and this led to great condemnation and the pivot point of Jesus’ ministry to the Jews.

In this section of chapter 12, we are confronted with Jesus teachings and works on the Sabbath day. His teachings were fundamentally different from those of the pharisees because He only taught how to understand the Sabbath from the Mosaic Law alone and not the rules of the pharisees. Nevertheless, the pharisees were seeking ways to condemn Him because of the Sabbath and had ultimately rejected Him, seeking to put Him to death.

The latter teachings of chapter 5 denote Jesus’ warning that the people’s righteousness should surpass that of the pharisees. So, He begins by attacking the wrong teachings of the pharisees and telling them His own, showing how the pharisees misinterpreted and went beyond the correct teachings of the Law of Moses. He dealt with the issues of murder, adultery, divorce, vows and retaliation. His point was that they should have a righteousness that comes from the heart in following the example of God, their father.

We all know that the Scripture teaches that God “shows no partiality”. This is a brief lesson as we take a closer look at that word in the original Greek text of the New Testament that states that fact - Romans 2:11.

After Jesus passed His test in the temptation in the wilderness, He is now ready to begin His public ministry. He sets up His headquarters in Capernaum and then chooses the first of His disciples. He began going about Galilee announcing that He is the Messiah, proving this with great signs and wonders of miraculous healings. As He preaches, teaches and perform these signs, large crowds begin to follow Him.

John the Baptist begins his ministry of preparing a people to receive the Messiah when He comes by baptizing. Although a simple prophet/preacher, he is powerful and draws many from far and wide to his ministry. Upon noticing a delegation of religious leaders, John admonished them to repent upon the threat of being cast into Hell by the Messiah. Later, Jesus came to John to be baptized. But John thought this to be unacceptable. However, after Jesus explained it to John, he baptized Him. When Jesus arose from the waters of baptism, the Holy Spirit descended upon Him and God spoke from heaven of His pleasure in Him.

Matthew chapter 2 continues dealing with the early childhood of Jesus with the visitation of the Babylonian magi. However, the star that once led them has disappeared; so, they go to the naturally expected birth of a king, Jerusalem. Herod questions his scribes and priests if there is such a prophecy. They affirm this, quoting Malachi. Herod calls the magi and gives them this information and asks them to report back once they find the Messiah-child. The star reappears and guides the magi to Joseph’s house where they worship Him and bring Him gifts. They then depart a different way from which they came. This enraged Herod and he sends to kill all babies 2 years and under in Bethlehem. God also warns Joseph to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt because Herod will attempt to kill Him.  After Herod dies, God calls Joseph to return to Israel and raise Jesus in Nazareth.

As the people are at the base of Mount Sinai, God begins to speak to them His covenantal laws. It is here that we have what is called the Ten Commandments. These become foundational upon which God will set forth the rest (603) of His commandments in the Law of Moses (613 total commandments). But in the midst of God’s great display upon the mountain, the people become very afraid and asks Moses to relay God’s words to them. Finally, the chapter ends with an emphasis in God’s earlier prohibition against idolatry and with preliminary observations concerning the altar to be built for their sacrifices.

After three months since the Israelites left Egypt, they finally arrive at Mount Sinai, where God had first spoken to Moses. God instructs Moses to offer them a unique covenantal relationship to Him; and they enthusiastically agree. He continues to tell Moses to tell the people to prepare to encounter Him in three days at the foot of the mountain. On the third day, God comes down from heaven in great power of presence and makes Himself known in the sight of all the people. It was a sight that we can only imagine that they saw.

While encamped at Rephidim, Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, brings his wife and two sons back to him after hearing of the great things that God has done for His people. He greets him and enjoys a meal as Moses tells him in greater details of all the things that God has done. The next day he observes how Moses judged the disputes between all the people. Fearing this would surely wear Moses out, he advised him to appoint judges for the smaller matters and for him to judge the issues that the lesser judges could not determine. Moses listened to the counsel of his father-in-law and finally bid him farewell. A wise man will listen to godly counsel.

After leaving the wilderness of Sin, God led Israel to Rephidim, where they had no water. As usual, the people complained against Moses; and Moses cried out to God. God instructed Moses to strike the rock and it would give water for the nation. While they were encamped in Rephidim, they were attacked by Amalek. Moses instructed Joshua to go to battle with him. Joshua defeated Amalek by the power of God. So, God provided substance for His people and victory in battle.

After leaving Elim on the way toward Mt. Sinai, the people exhaust their food supply and begin to complain - again. God tells Moses to inform the people that He will provide bread for them and also give them meat to eat. So, God gives them manna (bread) from heaven and commands the people to take only as much as they needed on a daily basis. Also, He instructs them to take twice as much on the sixth day, because now they will begin to observe the Sabbath. Then He tells Moses to instruct Aaron to commemorate the event by saving some of the manna in remembrance of God’s provision for forty years.

After God led the children of Israel through the Red Sea on dry ground and drowned the Egyptians when they attempted to follow, Moses led them in a song of praise for God’s great deliverance. He sang of God’s power, majesty, glory and faithfulness to deliver His chosen people. Not many days from this awesome event, God tested the people by leading them to a place where the water was unsuitable to drink. The people responded by complaining. God set forth this event as a principle - obedience brings a blessing; disobedience will bring chastisement. Nevertheless, this incident of Israel’s responding to hardship with murmuring and complaining becomes the norm for the nation.

As the children of Israel departed Egypt, pharaoh and the Egyptians began to have a change of heart. They regretted allowing the Hebrews to leave and wanted to re-enslave them. God knew this would be the case and He hardened pharaoh’s heart, telling Moses to change Israel’s travel directions to appear as if they were lost and confused. God would use this to cause pharaoh to chase after them. Moses obeyed and the Egyptians pursued as God said. God protected Israel through the cloud. Then God commanded Moses to divide the Red Sea (Sea of Reeds) which allowed Israel to traverse on dry ground. When the Egyptians tried to do so, God drowned them.

After giving the Israelites instructions on how to observe the Passover and Unleavened Bread, Moses also commanded the nation to set apart all the firstborn of man and animals to God. This was also done to commemorate God’s great deliverance of the Jews from Egyptian slavery. And as an additional visual teaching tool to help successive generations remember this deliverance, Moses also instructed the usage of phylacteries. From the moment of their departure, until reaching the Promised Land forty years later, God always manifested His presence among them in a cloud.

Moses continues instructing the elders of Israel how to observe the rites of the feasts of Passover and Unleavened Bread. He informs them that these ritual practices are to be observed from each successive generation. They are to commemorate God’s great deliverance of the Israelites from Egyptian slavery. He continues to give instructions on how non-Israelites (non-Jews) are to celebrate the Passover if they are believers in the God of Israel.
