There is another monster between the party and the Basilisk. The rhodelite bhaterra was not happy about them disturbing its nap, and they dispatch it with more ease than their last two obstacles. Vae collects the crystals that fell off the creature. It takes some time to get the Basilisk into something resembling working order. It is far from spaceworthy, but it should be able to make the flight to the ships.

Someone has snuck up on the party and they react quickly. Thankfully, Vae recognizes her old associate Scarecrow (played by Benjamin Drury of Lawful Great Adventures) before he is killed. Kai was forced to flee the Federation after attempting to investigate the creation of the Ashenguard, a curiosity sparked by the sight of Anima soon after her arrival. Anima asks Spectra if they will get to speak with someone from Nova Station since she remembers Dottie getting hired by them. Then she asks who Jin is, which leads to a conversation about the mysterious signal Spectra has been chasing.

53. Risk & Reward Part 3

Now that the blackmail has been dealt with and the hostages have been rescued, it is time for everyone to disappear. Max flies everyone to a spaceport where the Stellar Lance has arranged for all of the hostages to disperse and disappear before being returned safely home.

The party waits to leave until everyone is on their way. Max gives Vae a token, marking her as a friend of the Lance. Scorpia goes to enjoy her well-earned vacation before moving on to her next job. While she keeps the Kanasi, she allows Vae to keep the arm.

Then the party gets a ride to a safe house where they will wait for the heat to die down.

47 Enemy of My Enemy Part 2

Faridah and Vaelena research Dottie to see if they can find where she is now, without a lot of luck. Thankfully, Meria had better luck gathering information from Whisper about his interest in protecting the crew. Between that and the information from Sash's stolen data ripper, which Tali and Nell are processing, they are able to find two possible targets to take Trigger down a peg or two.

Once he loses his influence, he will become less of a threat. They can either take out his stash of blackmail, which is how he holds so much sway, or they can steal a massive shipment he recently arranged. Either option will diminish his credibility and his support. If they can pull off both at the same time, it could ruin him.

It won't be easy, but after a conversation with Sash, Anima decides she is going after the blackmail. Because there are people in that vault and she has to make sure they are safe. Spectra and the rest of the crew will hijack the shipment.

Valdemar Bentsen (aka Trigger) is much more interested in claiming power for himself. His moves are causing waves that could send Sandro's empire toppling down.

Anima gets Vae and Faridah's help to see if, together, they can uncover Dottie's full name.

45. A Deal in the Making

Anima continues to see what information she can find on her donor.

While our new guest continues to appear nonthreatening, it seems she has a tool given by hackers to people they hire to do their dirty work. The crew spends some time debating how to get the data ripper away from Sash without her knowing.

Meria comes in with some more information on Whisper, the mysterious and powerful individual with an inexplicable interest in making sure they survive.

They don't trust him yet, and they still don't trust Sash.

After the first attempt to get the data ripper away fails, Anima tries a more straightforward approach. It proves more helpful than they could have expected.

44. Threat Assessment

Now rather suspicious of the new guest, who is thoroughly locked in quarantine, Vae and Spectra work together to corroborate her story. Meanwhile, Tali is sent in to see what she can learn while talking her ear off (and saying nothing at the same time).

From what they can tell, Sash is not a threat, though they still have questions as to her trustworthiness.

Meria has been in contact with a person who may be able to help them with their bounty situation. This individual seems oddly concerned with their safety, and at the moment she does not know what their stake is in this situation. So she is vetting them to see how trustworthy they are.

Before going to bed, Anima fixes some tea that ends up unlocking an unexpected memory. She remembers her donor.

42. Connections & Contingencies

After learning that her family has supposedly disappeared, Faridah shares that her father's favorite pass time was finding ways to disappear. Being a general in the Federation and married to a non-human made him unpopular, so he made sure to always have contingencies. Chances are, the rest of his people will be disappearing as well.

The clue her mother left behind points to Ondus, the Promethean homeworld. While they are discussing her family, Spectra warns the party that they have discovered a damaged escape pod nearby. The crew are obviously concerned and distrusting of this, but Spectra discovers that if not allowed in the occupant of the pod will likely suffocate. The Valna is brought on board and set up in the quarantine bay, where she can be monitored and kept secure.

40. Security Alert

The crew finds themselves temporarily trapped in Paragon Labs when a group of hackers starts attacking their firewalls. Normally, this would not be a problem but seeing as the lab is currently housing a volatile (and possibly sentient) material, this is problematic indeed.

Vae and Spectra work on helping to secure the station while Faridah and Anima make sure that nothing gets out of the bio lab. It isn't until the situation is resolved that they are able to finish the paperwork and leave the station.

39. Paragon Industries

The Opal Star arrives safely at Paragon Labs, where they are greeted by the site manager who helps them unload the engine. While waiting in the docking area, the party notices an odd-looking Promethean man who appears to have four arms.

They quickly learn that this individual is in fact Lex, the Opal Stars chief engineer, who, after a brief conversation with Spectra, immediately boards the ship.

On a brief tour of the lab as they help secure the engine, Faridah notices a bio lab with a variety of hazard signs surrounding it. Inside is an odd experiment, created by another company, slated for destruction.

After the deal is struck but before they can finish the paperwork, an alarm starts going off.

Faridah has a high-profile agent who is very particular about whom he works with. This agent also almost ended up in a fair amount of trouble before a used shuttle salesman helped prove he did not do what he was being accused of. His name was cleared and now he is even more reclusive online.

Armed with that information, Vae does more research. Then she settles in for a long conversation with her mentor about what she should do with this bounty situation.

36. Status Update

After getting the ancient engine secured, the party goes to check in with Meria to see what might have changed while they were gone. They learn that the bounty has been updated and the crew is taking every precaution.

Tali gets to work finding a buyer for the engine.

The party gathers in the mess hall to learn more about their situation and drink some tea. Spectra briefly calls Anima by another name, and Vae and Faridah get the feeling the name belongs to someone she lost long ago. Someone important to her.

The Federation coverage of the Jaeger explosion continues to be very suspect. Vae gets the distinct impression that they are setting her up for something sinister.

35. The Third Challenge

After successfully completing the first two challenges, the party has reached the final part of the vault. It is a puzzle that they cannot solve alone, and it hints at how even good things can be dangerous if not handled correctly. They have half of the pieces, while Spectra has the other half.

The reward for completing this section ends up being more than the party expected. More than Spectra expected. And hopefully enough to help buy them some breathing room.

34. History Lines the Walls

The party delves into the mystery of the Belare vault, Spectra taking one route while our trio takes the other.

First, they pass through a twisting maze whose walls are lined with a history wholely unfamiliar and old. It appears to be a tale of the origin of the universe.

Then the three are compelled to split up to face a more personal trial. The guardian of the vault challenges them, asking them why they are there and what it is they fight for. Then each person is left with a choice between helping themselves and helping another.

Passing that, they find themselves before the door of the third and final trial.

33. Preparing for the Vault

The party continues to discuss the implications of the bounty situation. They go to Meria, who has been researching whatever she can find on who placed it and why. So far she has been able to uncover the username of the person behind the bounty, Trigger, but she isn’t entirely sure who they are.

She and Trigger work on different sides of the same circle, so most of what she knows is just rumors. They don’t normally take this direct interest in specific individuals. They also aren’t someone you want to mess with. The last person who crossed Trigger (at least as far as she is aware) is still being investigated by the IRS. They also appear to be working with a very talented hacker, so it will take some time for her to figure out their identity.

Meria is able to confirm that the pictures were stills grabbed from Cynfrith’s security, which is easy to hack. Those images are likely to be updated soon due to the incident at the bar. Some possibilities are discussed as to how to lure out some more information, but that will have to wait until after the vault.

After leaving the mess hall, they go their separate ways to gather their weapons. Spectra hands out some helpful supplies before taking the ship in for a landing. The vault, being a vault of duality, is located in a cliff at the edge of night and day. Now they just need to open the door.

Call of Cthulhu: Carousel of Mist

The year 1927. Event: The "A Century of Progress International Exposition" also known as the Chicago World's Fair (pushed up 5 years from our reality, 1933).

The topics of interest this year include a series of discoveries regarding a new natural resource in which there has been a significant investment. This resource is unnamed, however many people have been calling it "Gravitium" based on how it interacts with lifting things into the air much like airships. To this end, the entire Municipal Pier has been turned into an exhibition on small-scale applications of this material to various artistic or scientific ends. This is in contrast to the more industrial applications on display at Lincoln Park just a couple blocks north of the Pier. Each of these is guided by advances in research or archaeology funded by a series of magnates.

Your employer has hired each of you to attend a ball at the Grand Ballroom at the end of the Municipal Pier. It is being thrown by many of these magnates who are seeing great income from this event. Now, not to dance mind you. He needs you to grab something from the Exhibition after hours. he said he would find you there, white-tie formal dress required, and he neglected to share the subject of his interest.

'Wandering eyes have a tendency of finding value in selling information you see, and we can’t afford to be discovered...It's for the safety of humanity you see...'

Part of the way through the party, a group of people slipped out of the party to sneak into the exhibit hall to find a particular item. They end up finding more than they bargained for...

32. The Dropping of Shoes

Things have gotten complicated aboard the Opal Star, with the recent announcements in the Federation. The crew finds themselves in need of more funds to get their loved ones to safety. The good news is, Spectra has a lead on a Belare vault. They have traveled to Aebos to meet with her contact at his bar.

Tali, Vaelena, Anima, and Faridah relax at their table as Spectra goes to handle the negotiations. For a while, things are fine. That is, until something happened that caused certain individuals in the tavern to take notice of the party. Vae noticed first and warned the others before going to casually collect Spectra.

Things escalate quickly and they all nearly get taken by thugs. Spectra provides a distraction and they are able to escape, Tali grabbing one of their phones on the way.

On the way back to the ship they discover there is a price on their head. Somebody wants to talk to them. They need the money from the vault even more now.

31. A Piece of History, For the Future

The Federation has declared the crew dead, putting their loved ones in a potentially precarious situation. Meria and Spectra mention knowing people who may be able to get them out safely, but it will not be cheap. They need money and they have recently been made aware of a way to get that money.

One of Spectra’s archaeology contacts is offering to give her the first go at a recently discovered Belare vault. These vaults offer tests of skill that, if passed, leave you with a gift of ancient tech. Druindaria explains to Vaelena that the vaults were left behind to safeguard technology that could help the future. The Belare and their allies created them during a time when they feared none would survive. These vaults hold history as well as tech, and they want them to be found.

Once the item has been retrieved, Spectra and Tali will find a buyer who will take the tech and learn from it.

30. The Art of the Fight

It is time for the new crew members to start their combat training because things are never dull on this ship. Tali takes them through how to use the external guns. Then they try out the shuttle simulator before practicing their hand-to-hand combat with Tylrish.

Then comes the unexpected news they were waiting for. The Federation has officially declared them dead and they are going to be running further investigations. No accusations have been made yet, but they may be coming soon. Vae’s mentor goes to ground as a precaution. Faridah’s parents drop some code phrases hinting that they suspect all is not as it seems. They specifically warn her to not come home.

The party may be needing money soon to pay for their loved one’s safe transport out of the Federation. The good news is Meria knows a few people that they can ask for help. And Spectra has recently learned of a rare opportunity to earn some money, fast. A Belare vault has been found, and Spectra is going to try and get first dibs on the coordinates.

29. Trouble Back Home

After successfully helping the Valna of Rekura not once, but twice, the crew returns to the Opal Star. There are no more jobs that need doing immediately, so they take some time to process their situation.

Vaelena’s mentor has been keeping her apprised of the situation in the Federation. There have been whispers of an investigation into the mysterious circumstances surrounding the Jaeger explosion. There is also word of an announcement soon to be made. This gets the party thinking of the possible implications.

They discuss at length how the Federation might use what happened as a source of propaganda. The government there is not afraid to cover the truth for their own benefit and they are not kind to non-humans. However things shake out, it is not going to be pretty. So Vaelena warns her mentor and asks him to check on Faridah’s parents, in case they need help getting to safety when things go sideways.

28. To Save a Life

The medicine has been delivered and the beast has been tamed. But in the process one of the Valna had an allergic reaction to something and by the time they get attention, their heart has stopped. Anima’s instincts kick in and she is able to get their heart beating again, even though she has no idea how she knew what to do.

This leads to a conversation with the party about what kind of person Anima used to be and just how lost she feels. Faridah and Vaelena agree to help her find a way to put the pieces together. Another piece is added to the puzzle when Anima remembers Dottie, an eldori scientist who she had saved several years earlier. They worked together for some time and, it turns out, Dottie is the one who taught her to drive. The conversation dies down and everyone turns in for the night.

The following day the party is given gifts from the Valna as thanks and to mark them as honorary members of the tribe.

Welcome to Rekura, home to a tribe of Valna who have found a way to coexist with a not incredibly welcoming planet. The Valna are a hardy people who have continued to survive after nearly being wiped out several times. Some have scattered across the universe to better ensure their survival, adapting to whatever environment they found themselves in. They hold tightly to their identities and their traditions.

After the medicine has been safely delivered, the party is invited to a feast with the tribe’s leaders, Corshi and Osaix. It is a lovely feast followed by a festive celebration. The evening ends with a touch of foreboding because it seems the Valna once more need the party’s help.

The Opal Star is quickly approaching the planet Rekura, home to the Valna tribe that is waiting to receive the much-needed medicine. The Valna are a strong people, steeped in tradition and deeply connected to their primal nature. Spectra has worked with some of their tribes before and knows them to be fiercely loyal when that loyalty has been earned. They will not allow new things to change their way of life, instead, they find ways to adopt these new technologies into who they are.

On the way, there is a brief encounter with the security for a roving mining operation which Spectra is able to talk her way out of purely with the fact the owner owes her a favor. The rest of the journey is uneventful with Vaelena asking Spectra about the Valna while everyone else prepares to land.

Tali pulls Anima aside to see how she is handling the revelation of how Ashenforged are made. Anima shares the source of her fears and together they discuss ways to learn more about who she was before she lost her memories. Meanwhile, Faridah settles down somewhere quiet to work on a new song.

Vaelena finally gets a moment to sit down and catch up with her mentor. She brings him up to speed on everything that has happened since she got hired for that mysterious mission, including the mystery of Faridah's fame.

23. To Steal a Heist

They spot a few thugs, as well as a well-known mercenary who could prove problematic is provoked. Meria has an idea for how to deal with that, though. The key is keeping themselves between the mercenaries and the medicine and not getting arrested.

22. A New Mission

The party returned to the house safe and sound after successfully retrieving all of the information from Cynfriths office. On the drive back home Meria discovered plans to steal life-saving medicine destined for a nearby Valna colony suffering from a plague. He wants to sell it for a cheap high. The crew of the Opal Star is determined to make sure this doesn't happen. So they take some time to gather information and prepare to sneak the package out from under Cyntrith's nose. It's up to Tali, Anima, Vaelena, and Faridah to make sure the package makes it onto the shuttle while Meria and Spectra keep an eye on all communications. With a rough plan, they make their way to the docks to steal a heist.

21. Information Gathering

The party assists Meria as she and Vae break into Cynfrith's office to steal any and all information they can from his computers. Tali is keeping an eye on things while entertaining the bouncer. Faridah has adopted the guise of another celebrity with Anima as her bodyguard and both are prepared to do something drastic if something drastic needs doing. Meanwhile, Vaelena helps Meria infiltrate the office to gather whatever information they can. Cynfrith is a terrible person who is also terribly cocky, so they are able to gather enough information to tear down his network and ruin his life.

They also discover plans for a robbery he has planned the following day. He wants to steal vital medicine from people who need it to turn into a party drug. The crew decides that is unacceptable, so they are going to ruin his day again tomorrow. Hopefully.

20. An Interesting Proposition

After the show was over, an interesting friend approached the group with an even more proposition. Meria is an old friend of Spectra and Tali's, and she finds herself in a bit of a predicament. Someone stole her ship and she needs help tracking down who and where. Thankfully, the bar across the street is owned by a man of ill repute that the party doesn't mind ripping off in an attempt to gain more information. Meria could do the job on her own, but having the party there to run interference will help make the job run much smoother.

It proves to be an interesting night indeed as Vaelena helps Meria break into Cynfrith's office to get the information that could help them dismantle his network. Meanwhile, Faridah impersonates another celebrity to create a distraction.

19. Cirq Deliri: The Second Act

It's intermission time at the Cirq Deliri and our friends are having the time of their lives. The tale that is being told is an old one, but a good one, focusing on one of the first cross-world collaborations to occur in a fledgling Alliance. In the concourse area, there are a variety of vendors from all areas, selling things that have special meaning to the party. Even Anima feels a tug of familiarity from some of the items. Perhaps a long-forgotten memory is about to come to light.

The second half of the show proves to be just as enchanting as the first, showing the power of working together in the face of adversity. Because it is better to face the impossible with friends at your side.

At the end of the performance, they finally get to meet the mystery woman that Spectra and Tali noticed at the beginning of the show. Meria is an old friend looking to rejoin the crew until she can track down the whereabouts of her own ship. She also has an interesting job proposition for the party.

A New Message for the New Year

2020 was a crazy year full of stress and uncertainty. But it was also full of creation for me, as I once again dove into storytelling to find a way to process everything that was going on. This helped me further realize what I want to do with my life and that life is short, so why not go for it.

I have always been and will always be a storyteller at heart. I created Pseudonym Social to change reality one story at a time, but there is only so much I can do on my own. That's why in the new year I want to continue building my community so we can keep telling amazing stories together. Because I can't do this alone and honestly, I don't want to.

After a day of travel and shopping, the party settles in for a homecooked meal with their friends. Anima learns a new recipe and finds that some of the cooking implements are more familiar than she realized. Kyshara has made plans for the party to go and see the crucible in the morning, which will be their first time getting to see one of these enigmas up close.

But first, it is time for a laid back movie night complete with goodies from the candy cabinet.

It will take a few days for the scout to fully regain their energy so in the meantime, it is time for some actual downtime. After an encounter with some skeletons, the party continues their exploration of the downstairs to make sure they didn't miss anything. Yndrss notices another strange note in the dining hall, telling the party that the last piece of the puzzle lies upstairs in the master bedroom. They also notice the scent of blood coming from the storeroom, which may be where the downstairs is located. Following the mysterious instructions, they make their way upstairs and the man shows them a memory that fills in the missing pieces and finally explains why they were brought there.

Armed with the truth, they begin their descent down into the den of death. Along the way another curse will be revealed as the two half brothers fight to not let the wolf take control.

There is also a nasty surprise waiting for them in the private study. There are still some pieces missing though.

12. Ever Onward

After a rather harrowing encounter with some bears, the party made some new friends and learned a little bit more about one of Spectra’s associates. A mysterious woman named Meria who apparently works with artisans. Tali was injured but is stable enough to drop the new friends back off in town before returning to the ship so they can continue on their journey to the Belare crucible. Other interesting tidbits may come to light about the history of the ship and it’s crew.

10. Cyborg Fashion Show

Questions still linger, as do suspicions, as the party does their best to prepare for the unknown. Even in a place as meticulously bureaucratic as the Federation, plans can go rather awry. Especially when there are outside forces tugging the strings.
