De'Andre Hawthorne AKA Blaq Ice is an Award Winning, American poet, International Spoken Word life artist, entertainer, lecturer, promoter, producer, host, videographer, graphic designer, published author, mentor and activist. The contributions of this amazing artist to American and Chicago spoken word poetry is truly Monumental. 

HISTORY MAKER

Blaq Ice is the first Hip Hop/ Spoken Word artist in Chicago to run for political office. In 2001 he ran for Alderman of the 17th Ward placing in 2nd.

Blaq Ice made history by establishing the 1st National Spoken Word Awards in 2017. This Award show is the Grammys for performing poets.

In 2021 Blaq Ice, as a member of the Black Heroes Matter Movement, was instrumental in helping to change the historic Lake Shore Drive to Jean Baptiste Point DuSable Lake Shore Drive. This was done after 200 years of denying the honor of the black man who founded Chicago.

On April 2, 2022, he won his 8th Chicago Music Award, his 7th for best poet. He has produced and released over 30 albums and has produced over 15 albums for other artists. His poetry has been published in 9 anthologies and he just released his new book in April of this year.

THE ACTIVIST AND MENTOR

As an activist and mentor he has mentored thousands of young people in Chicago Public Schools since 1990. He has lead Peace marches on the southside and westside of Chicago against the murder and gun violence. He and his wife, Chicago's favorite Black Power Couple, visit prisons, feed and clothes the homeless.

Not only has he left an imprint in the Spoken Word Genre internationally, but he has also left his footprint in communities all across the world with his artist/activist movement P.O.E.T, inspiring thousands of ordinary people to use their gifts to do extraordinary works in their communities.

Aquil Hussein Ali Bashir, deemed "The Most Interesting Man in the Hood" by radio personality Patty Jackson, was born in Philadelphia, PA on September 2, 1972 to two loving parents, Dr. Abdul M. Bashir and his late wife, Nazirah A. Bashir, the iconic power couple who brought Paramount Dental to Philadelphia, PA on 52nd Street & Master Street. Aquil grew up all over the country learning and helping his family to facilitate affordable dentures to impoverished communities, while affording them the ability to smile again.

While a student at Overbrook High School in 1988, Aquil was a Radio/TV personality on "The Way It Is" at the tender age of 15 on WDAS-AM/FM radio, working alongside radio greats such as the late "Butterball" Joe Tamberro, Jocko Henderson, Georgie Woods, Tamblin Henry, E. Steven Collins, Doug Henderson, and Patty Jackson just to name a few. He's Interviewed Smokin' Joe Frazier, Marvis Frazier, Percy Sutton of the Apollo Theater, Kool Moe Dee, Heavy D, Black Box, Toni Tony Tone, Maxi Priest, Prince, Michael Jackson, and James Earl Jones.

Aquil's contributed to television credits for PHL17 Kid Time News, and also made guest appearances on BET's Teen Summit. 

At the age of 16, Aquil became the CEO of Talent Network For Teens showcasing HipHop legends like Parry P, Cool C, EST and many more. He also hosted B-Boy battles and DJ battles involving DJ Jazzy Jeff, Double Trouble, and many more. He distributed and sold VHS mixed tapes of local teenage talent that he's managed.

 In 1996, Aquil became a club owner of The Grindstone, a hot spot for Philly's elite celebrities, hustlers and athletes, subsequently writing a book on his experiences some 20 years later.

From 1998-2003, Aquil was the CEO of Frontline Security, also an armed soldier for Insomnia Security and F.O.I., protecting stars and various venues in the Tri-State area of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, providing security details for stars such as Jill Scott, Beenie Man, Sizzla, Buju Banton, Beyonce, TLC, Jadakiss, Earthquake, and many others. 

In 1999, Aquil acquired his certification from National School of Mechanical Dentistry and started working alongside his family serving low income individuals all over Philadelphia for over 20 years.

In 2017, "Aquil Ali the Soul Poet" emerged on the scene as an author/spoken word artist after suffering a stroke and bouncing back from his near death experience after being left abandoned on his deathbed by his then wife. He channeled his misery in his writings and poetry.

As a performer, "Aquil Ali the Soul Poet" has graced several stages across the country on his Bucket List Tour, leaving audiences mesmerized and entertained by his commentary of survival stories and his gut-wrenching poetry, inspiring others to have faith and to push through life. 

Aquil's latest book and poetry production is called "Memoirs of a 3X Husband", captivating audiences again with in-depth poetry about real-life events of his life that every divorced man and woman can identify with.

Orion Meadows is a Slam/Spoken Word Performance Artist, activist, author and public speaker. Much of his activism is expressed through his art. Orion is a member of organizations such as NAEFI (National Alliance for the Empowerment of the Formerly Incarcerated) and PNAP (Prisoners Neighborhood Arts & Education Project)while attending Northeastern Illinois University. He is an advocate for the implementation of the creative arts and academic programs in the Department of Corrections and has served as a participant in Queen Mother Helen Sinclair's Jessie Ma Houston prison outreach ministry which is a branch of the Rainbow Push Coalition. Among his other accomplishments, he has attained ordination in West African and African American religious and cultural studies from the Temple of Ole which is also known as Ruyah Ole, and is the founder of SAHU CREATIVE. His 3 publications are entitled Inside The Box, Birthmark and The Rose That Grew Through The Barbwire. Orion is very passionate about his craft, urban aesthetics and culture and using Hip-hop arts as a vessel to raise awareness in the community. Who started off with his first love hip hop at the age of 9 years old. He discovered how to write music from his uncle Anthony at young age, and it became therapy for him. Since then he has performed on many live stages and open mics. Now he has turned another leave in the poetry world with spoken word. He is also a certified meditation practitioner, certified to coach in the counseling field, and often studies on psychology and spirituality. Marcia discovered joy in self-expression when she wrote her first poem at 8 years old, which would later be the foundation of her artistic development. 

In high school, she discovered the many roles she could have as an artist. During the time, Marcia became her school's newspaper lead photographer, a radio host apprentice, and an editor of a magazine entitled Spotlight. She also discovered her love for performance when she began to participate in Louder than a Bomb, Chicago's largest youth poetry competition. She then became a spoken word artist and explored other avenues of performance such as theatre and dance. By 2014, she discovered her love for acting and eventually moved on to receive her BA in Acting in 2020 from Columbia College Chicago.

As of now, she hopes to continue to expand as an artist.

His poetic travels have taken him to several college campuses, 3 poetic off Broadway productions, two chat books, 1 CD (Chalklines on Black Asphalt)...countless performances, and blessed to meet and perform with a Fort Knox vault of talented artists!

In 2002, he became one of the founding members of a poetry troupe called “Machismo Redefined” alongside Eric Crow Draven, John Chance Avecedo and one other member. They performed in multiple venues throughout NYC and northeast colleges.He hosted and performed@ NYC Inspired Word and  is the host and a member of the wonderful "Agents of Change": a poetry collective consisting of social workers and educators using poetry to make a difference in the community they work in. As an actor his work goes back over 15 years. Working on projects of his own and others. In 2009, he landed the role “Ugly Man” in the full-length film King Of Paper Chasin. An indie Urban Crime Drama based in NYC. This indie film broke ticket sales at the HBO Latino Film Festival totally selling out two showings in a matter of hours. The film has been seen on HBO, SHOWTIME, CINEMAX, NETFLIX and HULU. Currently he is pursuing a degree in film from the L.A. Film School so that he can produce the best films and documentaries 

As a poet, since 2000 he has graced many stages in NYC. From the historic NuyoRican Poets Café to Thought Provoking Poetry Slam, the United Nations to The National Action Network. People has experienced his brand of sign of the times poetry. Tha Real has also performed at community-based events from Autism Awareness to the homecoming of A political prisoner, He is also the curator of over 90 poetry showcases, open mics and events to date including a participant in the 10,000 poets for peace worldwide day of poetry.

You know it's Tamika Harper by the sound of her shoes.

Coming down the stairs of her mother's home on Westmoor Drive on Atlanta's west side, they make a big noise. Compared with the black leather Roman sandal-stilettos that laced halfway up her legs when she made her Broadway debut last year, these tan strap pumps are elfin. But they've still got drama.

So when Harper, who uses the stage name Georgia Me, finally appears in the room, she fills it as certainly as the overstuffed floral chairs and the bookcase of family photographs behind her. Her lips glisten. Her dress is paisley. Her hair spills onto her shoulders in Rapunzel-like corkscrews.

"My look sells me more than anything else in the world," says the 27-year-old star of "Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam," which arrives at the Fox Theatre on Thursday, "because people think: 'How dare this big black girl think she's beautiful!?' And then on top of that, I am!"

After years of self-doubt, Harper, who stands 5-feet-10 and weighs more than 200 pounds, seems to have come to terms with her size. In poems like "Full Figure Potential: A fat girls blues" and "Nig-gods," both of which are showcased in the Tony Award-winning "Def Poetry Jam," the Booker T. Washington High School graduate and self-described "ghetto belle from the 'hood" sings a song of herself --- with no apologies.

"GA Me," or Georgia Me, is an acronym for her life's credo: "God's apostle, moving everyone."

Since her conversion to poetry in 1998, the Bankhead Highway gadabout has played the Aspen Comedy Festival, toured Europe with "Def Poetry Jam" and performed on the 2003 Tony Awards program. She has done readings with Danny Glover, Phylicia Rashad and Jeffrey Wright and, while in Scotland with "Def Poetry," was invited to appear in "The Vagina Monologues." Her work has just been published in "Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam on Broadway" (Atria, $20), a book of poems and interviews.

She was more recently featured in The New Word Order Word Warriors Tour
June 21st through August 6th 2008.

Next Harper wants to pursue a career in TV, film and writing --- and dreams of running for political office. "I'm like Arnold Schwarzenegger," she says. "Only I can speak English."

A major force in Atlanta's vibrant spoken-word scene, making appearing at places like Club 112. In 2001, this fan of Nikki Giovanni and Goodie Mob was named Poetry Slam Champion of Atlanta.

After appearing three times on "Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry," HBO's Peabody Award-winning spoken-word series, Harper joined the 10-member company that took the show to Broadway. The event got rave reviews and signaled that this urban-incubated, hip-hop-influenced poetry style was finally gaining acceptance as a legitimate art form. A visceral combination of the personal and the political, of the anger of alienation and the urgent rush of empowerment, "Def Poetry Jam on Broadway" meant that the world was finally listening to folks like Georgia Me.

"I gave my all, and poetry gave me what it could give," she says. "It's my weapon and it's my wealth."

Grant was born in New York City and raised in the Bronx.[2] His father, Samuel, was a locksmith and carpenter at Montefiore Hospital, and his mother, Theresa (née Maxwell), was a teacher.[3] He first gained widespread attention as a poet and performer when he was featured in the documentary SlamNation, which followed him and the other poets of 1996 Nuyorican Poetry Slam Team (Saul Williams, Beau Sia and Jessica Care Moore) as they competed at the 1996 National Poetry Slam.[4]

Grant took the name "muMs" when he was 20 and performing in a rap group. Due to retaining traces of a childhood lisp, a friend suggested he call himself “Mumbles”, which Grant shortened to "muMs", as an acronym for "manipulator under Manipulation shhhhhhh!"[3]

In the book Words in Your Face: A Guided Tour Through Twenty Years of the New York City Poetry Slam, author Cristin O'Keefe Aptowicz wrote of muMs's time in slam poetry, noting his writing "was street poetry at its purest. Thoughtful, precise but not without humor, his work spoke honestly about the life he and his friends and family lived and the city that he loved.[5]"

muMs performed his poetry on seasons 2, 3 and 4 of HBO's Def Poetry Jam, and was a member of New York City's LAByrinth Theater Company. In October 2007, muMs played a role in A View from 151st Street, a play about people trying to reconstruct their lives after gunfire.[6] In September 2014, muMs wrote and performed "A Sucker Emcee", hip-hop and slam poetry, based on his personal recollections.[7] In February 2015, muMs' play, titled "Paradox of the Urban Cliché", about a young couple living in Harlem, was performed at the Wild Project as part of the Poetic Theater Productions's Poetic License festival.[8] In February 2015, muMs played a role in "The Insurgents", a play about rage among the free, brave, and disenfranchised, produced by LAByrinth Theater Company.[9]

Carvens Lissaint is a Haitian American International award-winning poet, actor, and singer. He currently stars in the Tony Award winning musical HAMILTON as George Washington at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood, CA. Carvens was selected as an honoree by Blavity & Shadow And Act at the first annual Shadow And Act RISING Star Awards, highlighting the top black actors/actress, creatives & executives in the industry. He has graced stages across the United States, United Kingdom and The Caribbean. Featured on TED Youth, Sundance Film Festival, The United States Green Build Council in Arizona, the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, on Broadway at The New Amsterdam Theater & the Off-Broadway Hip-Hop Theater Festival, debuting his one man show “Walk” at the Ohio Theater. He was on the second, third, & fifth seasons of the hit television series “Verses and Flow” on TV One and has opened for the likes of John Leguzizamo, Common, Luke James and Jill Scott. A graduate of The American Academy for Dramatic Arts and St. John’s University with degrees in Acting/Dramatic Arts for Film & Television and holds an MFA from NYU Tisch School of The Arts Graduate Acting Program. He gives all glory and honor to Jesus. 

The daughter of an educator, Ayanna learned the importance of education and the responsibility of sharing knowledge early in life. She attributes her upbringing to why she writes, and why she chose to become an educator and mental health counselor. She graduated from the nation’s oldest historically black university, Lincoln University PA in 2008. She then earned her Master’s from Alfred University in 2010.
 
 

As a poet, spoken word performer and cultural curator, Ayanna has been called, “Harriet Returned.” She created a LLC to promote her various artistic projects with the same name. Ayanna has performed on stage, television and radio alongside seasoned artists such as Saul Williams and Abiodun Oyewole of ‘The Last Poets’. Ayanna released her first collection of poetry Before There Were Guns There Were Gods in 2010. 
 
 

Currently, she is a member of Power in the Pen Writing Workshop and completing a trilogy of fictional suspense novels titled, Half of What You See: The Scars of Love, None of What You Hear: Redemption and Repairs, and Everything You Feel: When Trauma Creates Mayhem. The Poet Rosegold

Jennifer K. Yancey, a.k.a. The Poet Rosegold, hails from “the real Gotham City.” The Bronx, New York native started writing poetry at 15 as a more creative way of communicating to the world. She joined the U.S. Army eight years later, having served as a journalist, understood the power of the written word. Rosegold retired (20 years, eight assignments and three deployments later) in 2015. Rosegold moved to Colorado Springs shortly afterward, discovering a large spoken-word community that soon rekindled her relationship with the pen and helped her realize the power of her own voice.

She jokingly refers to her work as “incendiary Redbone poetry,” highlighting the injustices tarnishing the American landscape; spirituality; love/sex; toxic relationships; mental health; and (past) life in the military. Her platform serves as a voice for those who don’t feel they have a voice, those who feel their voices aren’t “strong enough,” as well as those who are afraid to speak up and speak out.

Jashua launched his exciting language arts career by creating and hosting a legendary open mic in West Palm Beach, FL called SpeakEasy that ran weekly for five years. With the collective that gathered there, he became the founder of a traveling performance troupe, Sol Griots, that used poetry, dance, singing, rap and musicians to create community sharing spaces. After touring the country promoting a spoken word CD, producing several other successful events, becoming Grand Slam Champion multiple times in his region, and winning the first Best Poet of Palm Beach Award, Jashua moved to NYC. He was quickly recognized as a valuable contributor, and began hosting the most popular open mic series in Brooklyn, Brooklyn Nights, after being there only two months. He hosted that event for several years, as well as others and became known throughout NYC as one of the best hosts in the city, and by many accounts, the best!

As an active artist in his community, he has produced and/or hosted several critically acclaimed performance events, including open mic venues, competition showcases, slams, and a variety of special events. His ultimate creativity and community love was expressed through the festival he created in Brooklyn, NY called The Lyricalympics. It’s a competition-based event, with $500 prizes in the categories of poetry, hip hop, and comedy. It also includes headlining performers, workshops, language competitions, venue village (an area where various performance venues had booths and facilitated impromptu ciphers) and activity booths. Jashua has also co-written a critically acclaimed play entitled, “You Are Who You Eat,” that was produced by Green Earth Poetry Theater in 2018.

As an educator, Jashua has worked in the classroom, as a trainer and mentor to other educators, as a guest lecturer, and as a workshop facilitator. He creates arts-infusion curricula, that are implemented as stand alone lessons or integrated into classroom and common core objectives. He has been the Artistic Coordinator of the Kravis Center Annual Spring Residency for over ten years, being asked to retain the position even after moving to NY. He recently began publishing the math book series “I Am Mathematics,” and has released the first three books.

 is a Creative writer, Poet and Educator,  she has a passion for people and love for the arts. She enjoys teaching and mentoring youth and adults. Her aim is to spark hope, encourage and empower others through her poetry writing and creative workshops to see themselves and their agency through their own strength

Robin moved to Chicago in the late '90s and was sucked into the poetry scene. Competing in any slam she could find, several Louder than Bomb competitions, and of course the fiery open mic stage, Robin was rarely seen without a mic in her hand as a teenager. 

The day Robin walked into Austin Town Hall Cultural Center is the day her life changed. After meeting Dionne Hawkins, her mentor and close friend, Robin used the stage for more than clever rhymes and 16 bars. Robin begin to do several stages plays at both Austin Town Hall Cultural Center as well as Circle Theater in Oak Park, Illinois. Musical theater was a calling that she could not ignore. From The Wiz to the Broadway masterpiece Once on this Island, she began to star as a vocalist and actress. It is here that she would meet others who love creating as much as she did.

After several other stages and television performances, Robin drifted to dance. The Hornets Drill Team of the west side of Chicago was an outlet for dance, drill, and of course a little theater. Robin competed in competitions all over the USA, but could not forget her first love.

In 2005, Robin and her cousin Edwin Edot Clayton, along with several other talented friends started So ILL. So ILL (short for So Illinois) consisted of writers who brought their gifts to the stage with song, comedy, and of course, poetry. It was on those stages that she meet the love of her life, Darnell BRock Bobo (one-half of the hip hop duo The Ox-E-Morons). In 2008 she married BRock (of course their vows were poems).

Now Robin begins her new chapter as an artist by being Vice President of B.O.B.O. (Black Owned Black Operated) Enterprises and owner of Bobo Emporium, Host of Padded Room Open mic, and Co-creator of Think Tank NFP (a non for profit) that focuses on ethnic pride education, life skills training and financial planning for children of color). In a recent production of Dreamgirls Robin starred as Effie White, still keeping a close relationship with theater, music, and dance. The Bobos are artists who not only take their talents to any open mic or stage in Chicago but use those talents to give back to young Chicago artists like they once were.

Outside of art, Robin has a BSN RN degree, MBA in Human Resources is the acting operations manager for CEDA Call Center. She owns a few successful businesses, Robin's Resume Renovations, Robin B. Productions event planning and artist services, and the Bobo Emporium Hip Hop Shop/event Rentals. 

Robin B. has always been in love with creating and the creator. She's a wife, mother of three, artist, and an original Renaissance woman.
