Medical Anthropologist Dr. Natalie Tobert is an itinerant scholar who teaches in medical schools, hospitals, and universities. Her course modules support integrated health and explore multiple narratives and plural ways of understanding consciousness. As Education Director of Aethos Training, Natalie designed 8 - 10 weekly courses covering “Cultural Diversity, Mental Wellbeing, and Spirituality”. She developed a Training Manual on Cultural Equalities for Frontline Health Service Providers, and has facilitated workshop seminars in UK, Ireland, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and USA (CIIS - California Institute of Integral Studies). Dr Tobert conducted three ethnographic fieldwork projects: one in Sudan for her doctorate, and two in India. Lorne Schussel, MS, PhD is a Clinical Psychologist, Postdoctoral Fellow and Research Director of the Contemplative Science and Post Materialism Lab at Columbia University, Teachers College. Carlson Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences, Division of Perceptual Studies, and the Associate Director for Clinician Wellness at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Laurel Waterman, currently a doctoral student in Curriculum and Pedagogy at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto, has been teaching creative non-fiction writing at the University of Toronto since 2009. She published About Local Food: four conversations with Toronto food activists, a book based on her MA research in Adult Education and Community Development. Waterman has been a writer, researcher, and editor for several books, essays, research projects, and conference presentations throughout her academic career, mostly in the areas of non-fiction writing, education, food systems, and environmental sustainability. In 2021, she was awarded a grant from the Ontario Graduate Scholarship fund for her doctoral research in consciousness studies education. Eben Alexander: Illuminating Consciousness through Extraordinary Experience

Vasileios Basios (PhD) is a physicist, conducting interdisciplinary research on the foundations of complexity science and nonlinear systems, self-organization and complex matter. Dr. Etzel Cardeña received his PhD at UC Davis and was a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University and faculty at various places including Georgetown University. He holds the endowed Thorsen Chair in psychology at Lund University, Sweden, where he directs the Center for Research on Consciousness and Anomalous Psychology (CERCAP). His areas of research include alterations of consciousness and anomalous experiences, dissociative processes and acute posttraumatic reactions, and the neurophenomenology of conscious states. Alan Rayner: Including the Intangible

Alan Rayner is an evolutionary ecologist, writer and artist. He was born in Nairobi, Kenya and gained BA and PhD degrees at King’s College, Cambridge in 1972 and 1975. He was a Reader in Biological Sciences at the University of Bath from 1985 to 2011 and has published numerous papers and books, the latter including, most recently, The Origin of Life Patterns in the Natural Inclusion of Space in Flux. He was President of the British Mycological Society in 1998 and President of Bath Natural History Society from 2012 to 2018. Since 2000, he has been exploring ‘natural inclusion’, the co-creative evolutionary flow of all forms of life in receptive-responsive spatial and energetic relationship.

Ravi Ravindra obtained an MTech from Indian Institute Technology, Kharagpur; MSc and PhD in Physics from the University of Toronto, and MA in Philosophy at Dalhousie University. At different times he has held post-doctoral fellowships in Physics (University of Toronto), History and Philosophy of Science (Princeton University) and in Religion (Columbia University). He is now Professor Emeritus at Dalhousie University in Halifax (Canada) where he had taught courses in the departments of Physics, Philosophy and Comparative Religion. Ravi was a Member of the Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton, a fellow of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study in Shimla, the Founding Director of the Threshold Award for Integrative Knowledge. In 1995 I established an independent centre for action research and education, which enabled me to be involved in a wide range of staff development and research projects in the public, private and not-for profit sectors. Arthur Koestler: Mystical Awakenings

Arthur Koestler (1905-1983) was a scientifically educated writer, born in Budapest. He studied science and psychology at the University of Vienna. As a correspondent for a British newspaper, he covered the Spanish Civil War, during which he was imprisoned and sentenced to death. However, he was later freed as part of a prisoner exchange and returned to Great Britain. He wrote about science, including research on the paranormal, on the creative process, mysticism, and synchronicity. This essay is an excerpt from Arthur Koestler’s autobiography, The Invisible Writing, in which he relates his own mystical awakening under the severe conditions of imprisonment during the Spanish Civil War in 1937. Koestler was an early Member of the Scientific and Medical Network and endowed the Chair of Parapsychology in the University of Edinburgh.

After 31 years on the University of North Texas (UNT) Counselling Program faculty, Jan Holden retired in 2019 as Professor Emerita of Counselling. Beginning in 1988 with her doctoral dissertation, her primary research focus has been counselling implications of near-death and related experiences. In this research area she has over 50 refereed journal publications; several chapter and book publications, including lead editorship of the 2009 Handbook of Near-Death Experiences; and over 100 national and international presentations. Among Jan’s numerous recognitions is the 2019 UNT Eminent Faculty Award, one of the university’s highest honours. Since 2008 she has served as editor-in-chief of the International Association for Near-Death Studies’ scholarly Journal of Near-Death Studies, and she serves currently as that association’s President.

I was elected to a Fellowship at Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1975 and moved to Queen Mary in 1985. He developed the MOS Silicon Gate Technology in 1968; the world’s first microprocessor, the Intel 4004 in 1971, and several highly successful microprocessors, like the Intel 8080 and the Z80 produced by Zilog, his first startup company. Faggin was CEO of several high-tech startup companies he founded and directed since 1974. He is currently president of Federico and Elvia Faggin Foundation, dedicated to the science of consciousness. Faggin has received many international awards, including the 2009 National Medal of Technology and Innovation, from President Barack Obama. In 2021 he published his autobiography Silicon.

Jessica Corneille, MSc is a research psychologist specialised in spontaneous spiritual awakening experiences. She graduated with a Masters Degree in Psychology (Distinction) from the University of Greenwich, where she focused her studies on altered states of consciousness. Her mission is to challenge the default pathologisation of awakening experiences by helping to inform and encourage mainstream psychology to look beyond the current designated spectrum of ‘normality’, to encompass the transpersonal as something that is intrinsic to the human experience. Jessica has presented at a number of academic conferences, including with the British Psychological Society. She works for the Scientific and Medical Network, is part of the Galileo Commission steering committee, is a collaborator of the Emergent Phenomenology Research Consortium and Spiritual Crisis Network, and a certified Kundalini Yoga teacher.

Jeff is the author of eight monographs, including, most recently, The Flip: Epiphanies of Mind and the Future of Knowledge (Bellevue Literary Press, 2019). Duane Elgin, MBA Wharton Business School, MA Economic History University of Pennsylvania is Co-Director of the Choosing Earth project: www.ChoosingEarth.Org and author of the book, Choosing Earth: Humanity's Journey of Initiation Through Breakdown and Collapse to Mature Planetary Community. Edward F. Kelly is a Professor in the Division of Perceptual Studies (DOPS) at the University of Virginia, UVA. He received his Ph.D. in psycholinguistics and cognitive science from Harvard in 1971, and spent the next 15-plus years working mainly in experimental parapsychology, followed by a similar stint with a large neuroscience group at UNC-Chapel Hill where he carried out EEG and fMRI studies of human cortical adaptation to natural tactile stimuli. He returned full-time to psychical research in 2002, serving as lead author of Irreducible Mind (2007), Beyond Physicalism (2015), and Consciousness Unbound (2021), all produced under the auspices of Esalen Institute’s Center for Theory and Research. He is now returning to his central research interest – functional neuroimaging studies of psi and altered states in exceptional subjects.

Nicholas Hagger has lectured at universities in Iraq, Libya and Japan, where he was a Professor of English Literature. He is the author of nearly 60 books that include a substantial literary output and innovatory works within history, philosophy, literature and international politics and statecraft. As a man of letters he has written over 2,000 poems, two poetic epics, five verse plays, 1,200 short stories, two travelogues and three masques. He has pioneered a cross-disciplinary Universalism, a philosophy of the oneness of the universe and humankind, in seven disciplines. In 2016 he was awarded the Gusi Peace Prize for Literature, and in 2019 the BRICS silver medal for Vision for Future.

Marilyn Monk is Professor Emerita at University College London Institute of Child Health. She has been a research scientist for 60 years, university lecturer, head of UCL Molecular Embryology Unit, and has published over 200 scholarly papers. She is known for her work on DNA replication and repair, amoeboid cell signalling, regulation of differential gene expression in development, discovery and establishment of epigenetics, discovery of deprogramming to stem cells and, technically, the miniaturization of molecular analyses to the sensitivity of the single cell. Her pioneering work on pre-implantation diagnosis of genetic disease earned her an invitation from the Nobel Secretariat to speak at Karlskoga. Marilyn Monk is also an Alexander Technique teacher and Psychosynthesis Counsellor.

This new episode includes the introduction to the first section of personal accounts of spiritual awakenings by scientists and academics, namely spiritually transformative experiences resulting from spiritual practices. They can be read in a new book published by The Academy for the Advancement of Postmaterialist Sciences and edited by Marjorie Woollacott and David Lorimer.

Today's essay is by co-editor Marjorie Woollacott. It's title is "I’m Home: Awakening to a Deeper Connection with my Heart, my Mind, and the World". Dr. Marjorie Woollacott has been a Professor and Chair in the Dept. of Human Physiology and a member of the Institute of Neuroscience, at the University of Oregon. In addition to teaching courses on neuroscience and rehabilitation, she taught courses on complementary and alternative medicine and meditation. Dr. Woollacott has received over $7.2 million in research funding from the National Institutes of Health and other research agencies for her research in child development, aging, rehabilitation medicine and meditation. She has published more than 200 scientific articles and written or co-edited eight books, the most recent being Infinite Awareness: The Awakening of a Scientific Mind. She has recently (2017) accepted the position of Research Director for the International Association of Near-Death Studies (IANDS) and is the President of the Academy for the Advancement of Postmaterialist Sciences.
