I met Ram Berrouet at my COLORS NYC party a while ago, he came to visit LA with his friends app developing friends Bryan Okeke and Chris Thomas and we had a great week. These guys are incredible entrepreneurs and have a lot of insight on technology that I think people will appreciate. They built an app called 'Grab Cabs' that was similar to UBER before UBER popped off. We talked about the challenges they faced with it, why they stopped, and how they were able to pivot into developing apps for one of the richest people in the world, billionaire Carlos Slim.

Chase B, DJ Jerome Baker III, and DJ Super Nova are all amazing DJs. Each one spins at my monthly party COLORS in NYC and LA and in this chat we discuss what it's like being a full time DJ. It's very interesting hearing different perspectives as Chase is Travis Scott's official tour DJ, Jerome is spinning every night in DC, and Super Nova balances DJ'ing for nightclubs and theater shows.

Robert Ford is the founder of The Creative Mind Group, a company that takes film students to the major film festivals across the world. This was a dope podcast because I first met Rob as a participant in the Creative Minds in Cannes program when I was a student at Howard in 2008 and since then he has become a mentor and close friend of mine. Listen as Rob shares his stories of being banned from the Cannes Film Festival, understanding his purpose in life, and relentless work ethic on this episode!

Dormtainment is a comedy collective most known for their hilarious skits on YouTube. I talked to them about how they began their careers in college, diversifying their hustle, developing a schedule, and their comedic process. These guys are doing amazing things and I'm excited for the future of Dormtainment! Look out for their Comedy Central web series coming soon.

Josh Peas is a young entrepreneur. He manages the rising hip-hop star Casey Veggies and is an owner of the brand Peas & Carrots Intl. Peas and Carrots recently opened their flagship store in Los Angeles and I talked to Josh about growing up in LA, paving his own way in the music and fashion industry, and staying true to what makes his brand unique.

"We saw FUBU, we saw Rocawear, we saw all these urban brands come through and merge music and fashion the right way…A lot of people didn't do that after them" - Josh Peas

Highlights

Growing up in Los Angeles and Casey Rapping in middle school

Breaking in the fashion scene in LA

Seeing Rocawear and FUBU create a blueprint on merging music and fashion and creating their own model with Peas & Carrots and Casey Veggies

Opening the Peas & Carrots flagship store in West Hollywood

Staying true to what makes their brand unique

Comparing Peas & Carrots to Roc-A-Fella

Finding creative inspiration and people being passionate

Michael Hastings (the vocal journalist who opposed mass US surveillance operations and died "suspiciously") visiting the Peas & Carrots store

Will Sharp is the founder and creative director of the menswear clothing line Durkl. I wanted to have Will on the show to talk about starting a clothing line from scratch and how he's managed to stay independent for almost 10 years. We talk about the ups and downs of a creative life, being proud of where you are from, and much more!

Highlights:

His origins in Washington, DC

Starting Durkl in his parent's basement and thinking he could get rich quick

Urban Outfitters being the first retail store to purchase Durkl shirts

Taking risks with designs in streetwear and separating Durkl from the pack

Wanting to help shape Washington's creative community

His new restaurant in DC, Maketto

Welcome to the first episode of the Words With Friends podcast! I'm going to be interviewing my friends that I think people can learn a thing or two from on this show. Some music industry folks, some artists, just people who I think are incredible and have something to say about life, careers, and things that we are all experiencing as millennials (I don't even know if i like that word but whatever).

With that being said, Modi Oyewole is one of the co-founders of DC to BC, an event company that most notably throws the Trillectro Music Festival in Washington, DC. We talk about Modi growing up in DC, his growth as a man, and ending up working for Nike in Portland, Oregon.

Some highlights include:

Going to the same private school as Obama's kids
Meeting Ty Dolla Sign's father
Having the first Kid Cudi interview ever and then Kid Cudi hating him
Trillectro and starting a music festival from scratch
Ups and downs of social media
His new job at Nike

"The more occupied you are the better you schedule your life" - Modi Oyewole
