After experiencing burnout and frustration with the state of American healthcare as a nurse, Geleen, owner of “Shop Halo Halo” turned to baking to relieve stress and found solace in recreating traditional Filipino treats. As she shared her creations with friends and family, word quickly spread about her delectable desserts. Soon enough, Geleen's hobby turned into a full-fledged business venture.

However, despite the success of Shop Halo Halo, Geleen's journey wasn't without its challenges. She had a difficult relationship with her parents growing up because they wanted her to pursue the more stable career. She also struggled with her identity as a Filipina-American.

In her spare time, Geleen volunteers for the Foundation for Philippine Progress and collaborates with other powerful women as a founding member of Gabriala Portland.

He is grateful for their support, as Asian parents usually have high expectations of their children taking care of them. The pandemic affected him personally and the dance culture in Montreal. However, he found solace in directing his personal dance videos, which allowed him to express himself creatively. His unique style of choreography dance led him to work for TVA's “Revolution”.

One of the highlights of our conversation was discussing why we make art and how emotions like fear and sadness can inspire us to create something beautiful. Anya talked about how difficult it has been to cope with the war in Ukraine and how quickly it was forgotten by many people.

Victoria Fils-Aimé is the owner of “A Stitch At A Time”

She came on the podcast to talk about how, when she was 19 years old, she moved from Haiti to Montreal in search of a better future. But just as she was settling into her new life, the pandemic struck, leaving her feeling stuck. She then took a brief vacation to Haiti to visit her family, but while she was there, they were attacked at their house, resulting in her dad being shot and her mother being abducted. She suffered from depression and PTSD as a result of the incident, which caused her to seek medical attention. A psychiatrist diagnosed her of "Major Chronic Depression," which allowed her to identify the issue and move on to recover. She also talked about how she developed a successful business from her hobby of crocheting.

Burak Yilmaz is a published author and a Registered Nurse.

Abandoned by his mother at a young age, he was sent to live with a family that physically abused him, landing him in the ICU. From there, he was shipped off to a religious boarding school where he suffered sexual molestation and beatings, and then sent away again. He lived on the streets and endured homelessness.

Despite these hardships, Burak never lost hope. He found solace in writing and eventually became an author. However, his struggles did not end there. After being arrested for homosexuality, he was beaten and tortured until he signed a release paper promising to stop being gay, and after being freed, he was able to leave Turkey for the United States.

However, life rarely asks us what we want. Burak worked as a model for adult publications and some of New York City's busiest nightclubs. He experienced moral bankruptcy and depression as a result of his poisonous life.

As a result of living a toxic lifestyle in New York City, He experienced moral bankruptcy and depression that led him to attempt suicide before finally checking himself into a psychiatric ward for treatment.

Through it all, Burak remained committed to spreading kindness in the world and using his experiences as inspiration for others. His journey towards healing is remarkable.

Christy Kioko is a Creative, a philanthropist, and a proud Seattleite. As the daughter of Kenyan immigrants, she’s fortunate to have parents who nurtured her artistic talents. However, despite this fortunate upbringing, Christy still experienced the challenge of identity crisis between two cultures, and the insecurities that come with feeling different from her classmates. Her complicated relationship with her hair only added to these struggles. But as an adult, she is now deconstructing these old and limiting mentalities by practicing the art of enjoying the moment and embracing the idea that consistency is more important than perfection. Additionally, singing at church has given her confidence and a sense of purpose.

Driven by her passion for philanthropy, she traveled to Uganda to volunteer for an organization that claimed to help kids in need. However, upon witnessing firsthand the mistreatment of these children and the lack of transparency within the organization, she was inspired to take matters into her own hands. This led her to start her own charity drive, initially called "Operation Christmas" and will be later renamed "Operation Ukambani". Utilizing the power of social media, she was able to solicit donations and support for young children in need in Kenya.

Christy's dedication and drive to make a difference in the world is truly inspiring, and her story serves as a reminder that anyone can make a positive impact, no matter how big or small.

Drew Thach is a Digital Artist of Ahhdru Art and a professional Dad.

He spoke about how his parents fled the violence in Cambodia only to settle in another violent place, Detroit, Michigan. He also discussed how the war's ugliness affected his family, causing his father to abandon them when he was only two years old and leaving his siblings to raise him while their mother worked tirelessly.

He spent most of his childhood in the hospital waiting while his brother was undergoing continuous dialysis, there, he discovered his love of art and drawing during this period.

Despite his difficult upbringing, he is now a proud stay-at-home father to three adorable children, while his wife works to pursue her dreams, which got us talking about how becoming a father helped him become a better person and inspired him to pick up martial arts again and take up digital drawing.

Nicholas Leffel is a filmmaker from Madison, Wisconsin. He was adopted from a Russian orphanage as toddler by a couple from Washington DC area.

As an adoptee, he shared how he struggled with identity issues growing up and often felt like an outsider. However, he used videomaking as a way to express himself and communicate his experiences. He also talked about how taking a DNA test gave him a more direct sense of identity, but at the same time, still feels survivor's guilt, and how the ongoing war in Ukraine is affecting him personally. As a filmmaker, he discussed the advantages and challenges of having limited resources, and his hopes to have Central Asian representation in mainstream media through his work.

Growing up in Burundi, Stecy Baragengana had to avoid landmines and bullets, but somehow, it helped her be grateful. Her childhood was filled with fear and uncertainty, yet she still looks back at those times as fun. However, as She grew older and started to face the harsh reality of the world. It wasn't until She sought therapy that She began to understand the impact of her childhood had on her. Therapy allowed her to find ways to heal from it. It was through this process that she realized how important it is to find the right therapist for you. Someone who understands your unique experiences and can help guide you towards healing. As a Black woman in Montreal, finding her "black experience" was not easy. But eventually, she found her place and started exploring new opportunities. One of which was modelling - something that allowed her to express herself creatively while also breaking down stereotypes and barriers within the industry. Through all these experiences, I've come to realize how important it is to build a sense of community around us. That's why she co-created the Le Bond Is Real podcast with her brother. They wanted to create a platform where people can come together, share their stories, and feel like they are part of something bigger than themselves.

Despite that it didn’t match her expectations of what America looks like, there she learned there are other things that women can do. Despite not being good with kids, she is raising two American daughters where she struggles to find the balance which cultures, she will impart to them.

We also talked about her battle with immigrant insecurity, the inspiration behind Ikat Wear, the cultural appropriation of Ikat, and her involvement with "Cultural Homestay international" an organization that hosts exchange students.

I had a fun filled conversation with the actress and filmmaker Giovannie Espiritu. Born in the slums of Tondo, Philippines and later immigrated to California, her life has been full of colors and textures to say the least.

After learning that her step-dad had molested her, her mother expelled her out of the house, forcing her to move in with her grandparents. After some time and the passing of her grandfather, her mother dragged her back to the Philippines, where she felt lost looking for a sense of belonging. This led her to join a doomsday cult, which caused her to suffer from depression. Her mother then sent her back to the US, where she worked and lived with a couple who were elders of her church as an all-around caregiver. The couple eventually coerced her to marry a church member who was 17 years older than she was. Bored and friendless, she used to talk to telemarketers, till one of them suggested that she try voice over. She took a chance out of desperation, and it paid off as it led her to a career in acting, filmmaking, and coaching actors.

We talked about her growing up in Harare, Zimbabwe as a highly curious kid that was fostered by her parents helped her get a scholarship to the “whitest” part of America: Des Moines, Iowa, where she pursued a doctorate of pharmacy, which she used to start a pharmacy website to help Zimbabwean acquire medication online, though she had to stop it because of being inundated with red tape. We also discussed her experience as a Black African living in America, her relationship with the “n-word", how after seeing a clip of a crowd chanting “send her back” in a Trump rally to a black congresswoman, pushed her to quit her job and "go back home”, and in the process, she started writing her book, and quit her job to start her own publishing company that focuses on representing the marginalized voice of the society.

David Young Kim is a Muralist and co-founder of KAA collective.

Due to his Korean immigrant parents trying to establish their lives in America, he grew up as a latchkey kid, and without parental supervision he joined a Filipino street gang.

After feeling betrayed by his gang, and by then living in a suburb of Los Angeles, he decided to attend UC Davis to escape his gang life. Following his graduation, he worked for a pharmaceutical company, which he quit after a tough breakup and became a church intern. Years later, he took art more seriously and did a masteral.

Of course, we talked about his murals, his process of creating, the importance of them, and his inspiration for his art.

After meeting her husband who is a photographer, she finally took the risk of being a photographer herself. We talked about her work as a freelance news photographer, her work with homeless people, her pro-abortion stance, America’s lack of universal health care, and her projects about “Trans LatinX Sex Workers in Jackson Heights” and “The 3rd culture of former Soviet Union immigrants.”

He came on the podcast to talked about being a perennial great student in Bangkok, Thailand, until he moved to Dallas to acquire his Masters. There he suffered from culture shock both socially and academically, exacerbated by his lack of proficiency in English. As a result, he was told by his College Dean to “go home”; instead of heeding the Dean’s advice, he became a student assistant for international students, which turned his life around. When he received his master’s degree, he returned to Bangkok to work as a business consultant, but due to suffering ageism at work, he decided to obtain a doctorate in San Diego, California, which led him to discover his love for teaching. In addition, we discussed his work as a school President, where he advocates diversity, proper use of pronouns, gender neutral bathrooms, while giving all races a chance to succeed.

We talked about her family’s forced exodus because of the aftermath of the Rwandan massacre from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Kenya and eventually to Winnipeg, Canada, after her dads serendipitous meeting with a Mennonite couple, growing up in Canada with a strong cultural Congolese background, her complex relationship with her natural hair, earning her Karate black belt that led her to Japan to train with the prestigious Yagi family, her parents’ decision to not allow her to pursue her true passion for acting, attending Oxford University, going back to Congo to interview victims of sexual violence for her thesis which affects her to this day, microaggression, and working as a Press Secretary.

He told me about his mom’s incredible sacrifice of being a well-known school principal to cleaning houses and doing odd jobs, when she moved them from Ecuador to New York then to Puerto Rico, and then back to New York, to give him better life opportunities. Learning about English and life from Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokémon, growing up a “smart ass” that he translated to speaking against injustices in his adulthood, realizing that education is the key out of poverty, his experience through the racist New York public school system, the right way to go to college, and being the team leader for the Perseverance rover that was sent to Mars, and how he dealt with the stress that came with that.
