As many of you know, we started this show 6 years ago this week. November of 2018! 

We’ve come a long way in terms of our podcast. We have a better format, flow, editing, sound, yes, we still say “um” and get things wrong from time to time, but overall we are really, really proud of the last 255 episodes. We’ve covered SO MANY aspects of Southern Culture. And now, it feels as though the time has come to tie a bow on this project so that we may say yes to other things that we feel we are being called to or that we simply want to give space to, so that we can be called to. 

We’ve put our heart and soul into this show. We hope you feel that. It’s been a true labor of love. I’m not sure you all will ever know how much we think about the podcast or how many hours it takes to set up, record, edit, post, share on socials, etc. but it’s been so worth it!

We had fun sharing our 'learnings' with you on this episode, and we hope you will continue to stay curious about the American South and seek beauty here. We believe you'll find it.

This particular episode is going to feel a bit more built on our Christian faith because that is the only way we know how to walk out loving people who think differently than we do. Honestly, we don’t have a lot to offer on how to walk this out practically other than leaning in to our Christian faith on how we can have the mind of Christ.

• Matthew 5:43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. 1. 1 Timothy 2:1-2 - I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.
2. 1 Peter 2:17  - Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.
3. Romans 13:1 - Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. (He will use whoever is in office to accomplish his purposes, but it is not always through signing of bills/laws)
4. Jeremiah 29:7 - Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.
5. Psalms 2:10-11 -  Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling.
6. Proverbs 11:14 - For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers.
7. Proverbs 21:1 - The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the LORD; he turns it wherever he will.

Western swing is a combination of many genres, including blues, jazz, polka, country, and more. It's characterized by a strong dance rhythm and the use of electrically amplified stringed instruments, like the steel guitar.

Let’s not forget that the point of this music was and always has been to get people dancing!

In this episode, we introduced you to our Fort Worth, Texas friend, Devon Dawson. Miss Devon is a top entertainer in western music, and has been recognized by the Academy of Western Artists as the Female Performer of the Year 2009. She's noted for her vintage sock-rhythm guitar style, and warm 'swingtime cowgirl' vocals, which bring to mind legendary B-western ladies of the silver screen, Dale Evans, Rosalie Allen, Patsy Montana, etc. Like them, her lively persona intrigues and engages both kids and adults in her audience. She holds a Grammy certificate for her participation as the singin', yodelin' voice of Jessie, on the Walt Disney CD, Woody's Roundup featuring Riders in the Sky, which was the follow-up to the movie, inspired by the characters of Toy Story 2. She has performed in and out of that character coast-to-coast, and all across the American West, including at the renowned Grand Old Opry in Nashville, Tennessee, and at Pixar Studios in Emeryville, California. Born and raised in Sneedville, Tenn, country singer Morgan Wallen has been on a trajectory of stardom that many never would have imagined.  Join us at the table as we discuss the phenomenon of cousin Morgan.. 

What is it about Morgan Wallen? Why the stardom? How did he sell out 2 nights at Neyland Stadium?

He’s been named Billboard’s Top Country Artist in 2021, 2022, and 2023 and maybe he’ll get that same title again for 2024. 

He competed on NBC's 'The Voice' in 2014, his coach was Usher: and Morgan was eliminated during The Playoffs. A year later in August 2015, he released 'Stand Alone,' his first EP, with debut studio album 'If I Know Me' arriving in April 2018. The album peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 and spent 251 weeks on the chart. Its second single, "Up Down" with Florida Georgia Line, cracked the Hot 100 to reach No. 49. 

In addition to going six-times Platinum, seven songs from Dangerous have received new Platinum awards, such as the much-loved singles, ‘More Than My Hometown’ (five-times Platinum) and ‘Somebody's Problem’ (three-times Platinum).

In March 2022, the album established the all-time record for longest duration in the number one spot (97 weeks) on Billboard's Country Albums chart

Dangerous spent 86 weeks in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart, breaking the record for the most weeks in the top 10 by a single artist. 

Wallen’s One Thing at a Time album, which houses 36 songs, opened atop Top Country Albums as well as the all-genre Billboard 200 with the largest streaming week ever for a country album

One Thing at a Time had the most weeks at No. 1 among all albums since Adele’s 21 logged 24 nonconsecutive weeks atop the tally in 2011-12. One Thing at a Time debuted atop the chart dated March 18, 2023, and spent its first 12 weeks at No. 1 through early June.

We had an amazing opportunity and a great time at the Neyland Stadium show in Knoxville, TN where he played two monumental nights totaling 156,161 fans across both nights, surpassing the record previously held by The Jackson 5 across three shows in 1984 (148,407).

Highlands, NC is one of the highest towns east of the Mississippi River, with an elevation of 4,118 feet. It's also located in one of the few temperate rainforests in North America. Located on a plateau in the southern Appalachian Mountains, within the Nantahala National Forest.

• Waterfalls: There are beautiful waterfalls to see, and many of them require little walking to enjoy. Walk behind Dry Falls! Drive behind Bridal Veil Falls. See Cullasaja Falls from the Mountain Waters Scenic Highway. Hike to Glen Falls. For more, see our Highlands Waterfall Guide. 
• Hiking: Check out the Whiteside Mountain Guide for the area's best hike. Cliffside Lake has an easy 3/4-mile walk around the lake and the Vista Trail with a good bit of climbing. Sunset Rock (take Main Street 1/2 mile east to Nature Center) is a 1/2-mile walk to the top for beautiful sunset views seen over the town while you sit on slabs of granite. Adjacent Highlands Botanical Gardens has garden paths for strolling.
• Fishing: Fly fish for Brown, Rainbow, and Wild Brook Trout with local guides on many rivers in the area: the Nantahala, Tuckasegee, Cullasaja, Chattooga, White Water, and Panther Town Valley. May through October are the prime fishing months.
• Golf: There are many private courses in the area. Sky Valley Resort and Country Club is a public course in Sky Valley, Georgia, just 15 minutes from Highlands, with elevations up to 4,000 ft. and stunning vistas.
• Cashiers: The center of the community is the intersection of NC Highway 107 and US Highway 64. Explore numerous apparel boutiques, antique shops, home furnishing studios and outstanding restaurants. Many are hidden a little off the highway, so park and walk. We reccommend stopping at Cashiers Farmers Market for a picnic lunch and enjoy at their picnic tables or on a nearby hike. 
• Lake Glenville is just a few miles north of Cashiers along NC Highway 107. With 26 miles of shoreline, Lake Glenville is the lake with the highest elevation east of the Mississippi (3,500 ft.). It's a great place for fishing and boating. Find a beach across from the High Falls trailhead. Rent a pontoon boat at Signal Ridge Marina to explore the lake and see several waterfalls. Read more.
• Lakeside Restaurant- Featuring fresh seafood, an extensive wine list, craft cocktails and excellent service.
• Crown Jewel of the town is the Old Edward Inn and Spa.
• Madison’s Restaurant and Wine Garden at Old Edwards Inn- Wine Garden, with lush surroundings, market umbrellas, and a patio-side waterfall.

Tommy Jackson is a native of Franklin, Tennessee and has literally been dancing longer than we’ve been alive! He formed the Rocky Top Revue in 1982 and they’ve made numerous appearances on the Grand Ole Opry, The Ryman, music videos, opened for Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton and George Jones, and won numerous competitions. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005 Todd Terrell, Founded the United Cajun Navy. Katrina brought about not just a need for supplies, but also a need for BOATS.

The United Cajun Navy is a 501(c)3 registered nonprofit organization out of Baton Rouge, LA focused on helping make the world around us a better place. Primarily, they organize search and rescue teams during natural disasters. It’s a simple but necessary effort: People using their own boats and trained to help out in desperate times.

The gardens outside the cottage are equally impressive. Kathryn’s great affection for cottage style gardens was inspired by her many visits to England, Scotland, and Ireland. Her cozy and informal gardens fill her home with flowers from spring through fall – starting with over 2,600 daffodils and tulips followed by peonies, foxgloves, lupines, forget-me-nots, grape hyacinths and then lilacs, scented roses, delphiniums, sweet peas and of course hollyhocks to mention a few.

Green Bean Casserole Recipe:

1 bag of green beans.

Sauce.

1 small pack of mushrooms.

3 cloves of garlic

1 medium onion, chopped .

2cups of milk and 1 cup of half and half .

1 stick of butter.

3 TB spoons of flour

1 teaspoon of dry thyme or fresh thyme.

1/3 cup of cheddar cheese.

1 cup of bacon bits 

Toppings;

1/2 cup of French fried onions.

1/2 cup crushed Ritz crackers.

OK now this is how I made it ;

Sautéed the onions, mushrooms, and garlic in one stick of butter. Then add the flour and stir it in . Add the 3 cups of milk slowly and make thick sauce . Add the cheese, bacon, bits, and the thyme in. Add salt and pepper to taste. 

Add the sauce to the blanched beans in a baking dish and top it with French onions and crackers or bread crumbs and bake it at 350 for about an hour.

The Golden Isles

Halfway between Savannah, Georgia and Jacksonville, Florida lies a nature-lover’s dream vacation spot: The Golden Isles.

These Georgia islands have something for everybody, from luxurious accommodations and great golf courses to more modest spots with marsh lands and bike trails for outdoor exploration. 

Lainie personally spent some time this summer at Jekyll Island, but we will also discuss St. Simon Island, Little St. Simon Island, Sea Island,  and Brunswick (port city.)
