Mr. Serv-On was a childhood friend of Master P's and was signed to No Limit Records on the cusp of Master P's breakout into the mainstream. His debut album Life Insurance reached number 5 in September 1997. His sophomore album, Da Next Level earned him the weeks highest charting debut and surpassed the sales of other well-known rap acts like Mystikal and Silkk The Shocker. Con Funk Shun was formed by high-school classmates Michael Cooper and Louis "Tony" McCall, along with Karl Fuller, Paul "Maceo" Harrell, Dennis Johnson, Cedric Martin, and Danny "Sweet Man" Thomas. All of them had been playing together since their high-school days in Vallejo, CA. Felton Pilate, also from Vallejo, joined the group after his band, a local rival, disbanded. In the early '70s, the group was a backup band for the Soul Children with the name Project Soul. And when they weren't on the road with the Soul Children, they were creatively working with various Stax staff writers. In the mid-'70s, Project Soul made an effort to become a headliner, but they met dead-ends and little success. However, they found good fortune at Audio Dimensions, a Memphis recording studio owned by producer Ted Sturges. Around this time, he group named itself after the title of one of their instrumentals, "Con Funk Shun."

A chance encounter at Montreal’s Red Rhino Studios in 2008 between owner, producer Drex and rapper Big Bricc, who came in to master a mix tape, soon lead to the formation of progressive, formula-breaking collective Underground Realroad. “Bricc came in and I could tell his stuff was not contrived. There was realness to it,” says Drex. Putting the tape aside and starting to lay down their own tracks, it took a text message conversation to officially start up the project. Releasing their debut, “Slave to the Game,” Underground Realroad delivers their own genuine, personal experiences with a sound free of influence. Bored of traditional hip-hop, they bring their vision of what hip-hop should be. “People limit themselves creatively because of the industry side of things,” says Drex, and so they strive not to emulate what is popular, opting to make their own scene. The name, a play on Canada’s historic involvement of smuggling American slaves through the Underground Railroad, represents the “road they’re taking: trying to be free of influence of what’s going on and emancipate themselves of it. What it comes down to, as Bricc quotes, is: “Life is not made to find you, but to create yourself.”

I have had the privilege to perform great legends such as, the late great Rudy Robinson, late great Dr. Teddy Harris, and the late great Harold McKinney, and have shared the stage with Marcus Belgrave, Milton and Philip Hale, John Douglas, Ron Carter, Martha Reeves, Bill Meyer, Spider Web, Hubie Crawford, Raysee Biggs, Romona Collins, Sky Covington, Big John, Willie Jones of the Royal Jokers, and TP Coleman, Terry Thunder, Tonya Hudd, Cubie, Willie Wooten, Terry Wheeler, Altemese, Mike Jellick, The Matthew Twins, Ashaki, Ola Hemphill, Diva D, Terry T, and presently working with John Glover and the list goes on and on, especially down at Bert..s Marketplace where we have Jam sessions. On the brink of graduating from college (Temple and Kutztown), The Lawsuits are ready to blanket the country with their sound. After hearing complaints from friends about how there’s no good music anymore, Williams, a Philly Native, set out to adjust that. However, this talented young musician didn’t just want to make good music, he wanted to send a message. Which is what he did with his debut album KooolWorld Williams knows a lot about the music industry, coming from a very successful musical family. His grandfather wrote the number one smash hit 'Get a Job’, for the Philadelphia-based doo-wop group, The Silhouettes, and his father was the founder of the group Breakwater and producer of the disco hit "Catch Me I'm Falling" by Pretty Poison. So it’s no surprise that he produced, wrote, and rapped on every track of KooolWorld. William has made a lot of connections throughout the years and knows how hard it is to break into the music industry. That’s why for the production of this album, Williams didn’t use his famous connects, but instead used unknown artists with amazing talent, and started his own production company called KooolWorld. Why, you might ask, because Williams wanted to let aspiring artist know that you don’t need to name drop or sell your soul to record companies to get a deal. Shanelle shared the stage with Nas for his 2008 album release concert for "The N Word," and featured in Q-Tip's video for "ManWomanBoogie." She also performed and worked with artists such as Les Nubians, Redman, Erick Sermon, and with comedians such as Rob Stapleton and Michael Blackson. She was a member of the 2006 Nuyorican Poets Cafe National Slam Team and a competitor in the 2007 Individual World Poetry Slam Competition in Vancouver, Canada. Shanelle presently tours the US and abroad, facilitates creative writing workshops throughout New York City and promotes Lupus awareness. Terrell Copeland became "Case no. 58105" on The History Channel's new "UFO Hunters" series. There, on national TV, host Bill Birnes declared the Suffolk man to be a "hybrid" - a product of intergalactic breeding who is being prepped for direct contact with his alien relatives. "That's heavy," Copeland says. "It's not surprising to me, though. After all that's happened these last couple of years, it could be true." His life has gotten even weirder for Copeland, now 26, since the former Marine became one of several locals who told The Pilot they've seen UFOs over Hampton Roads. Back then, Copeland reported that he'd witnessed a massive triangle-shaped craft hovering over a Suffolk shopping center late one night in 2005. After that, Copeland said, he began experiencing what's known in UFO circles as "missing time" - minutes or hours that unaccountably vanish - and episodes of temporary paralysis, when he was awake and aware but couldn't move. His story wound up drawing the attention of the "UFO Hunters" team. TV types showed up in Suffolk in November, and Copeland became part of an episode called "Alien Contact," which first aired in April. On the episode, Copeland's video was compared with one taken at Lake Erie by Michael Hill of Cleveland, who said he has not only had multiple UFO encounters but also has been abducted by their occupants. The team called in an expert, but the images were too fuzzy. Next, Copeland and Hill were ferried to Massachusetts General Hospital for testing, where it was discovered that both have elevated levels of the enzyme creatine kinase, normally associated with muscle injury.

Two musicians from two iconic bands that have entertained us for years and continue to give us quality music for those who still desire the classic styles of R&B and Jazz. Joseph Stonestreet is American R&B vocalist who found fame during the 1990s as one-fourth of the Platinum-selling R&B quartet BLACKstreet. A part of one of the top R&B vocal groups of the '90s, Blackstreet was founded by singer, producer, and new jack swing pioneer Teddy Riley after the breakup of his seminal trio Guy. Riley had taken a few years to concentrate on his booming production career, which saw him working with Wreckx-N-Effect, Bobby Brown, Michael Jackson, and SWV, among others. His itch to get back in the performing arena resulted in the formation of Blackstreet in 1994, which included singers Chauncey "Black" Hannibal, Levi Little, and Joe Stonestreet in addition to Riley. Stonestreet was replaced by Dave Hollister prior to the recording of the group's self-titled debut album, which appeared in the spring of 1994. On the strength of "Before I Let You Go," a Top Five hit on the R&B charts, Blackstreet was a platinum-selling hit even without much crossover exposure. Two more singles from the album, "Booti Call" and "Joy," were minor hits as well. Joe is featured as the lead vocalist and writer of the hit "Baby Be Mine". In 1973, Cliff Adams, Mike Ray, and Larry Gittens were the horn section for The Stylistics world tour. Clifford went on a two-year stint with the world famous Thad Jones and Mel Lewis Big Band. After playing with Duke Ellington's Orchestra, then headed by the Duke's son Mercer Ellington, he did a European tour with Max Roach, and then formally joined Kool & the Gang.
