That includes details of how to get hold of a new book “Flora of Cornwall” which Simon describes as

“an excellent comprehensive book with Great intros to habitats etc and then details of where all species have been recorded. All from information collected by amateur botanists across Cornwall.”

The book isn’t widely available - not from Amazon or Waterstones, so we’ve included a link to the flyer with details of how you can order direct from the author. Old school!

Wild Flowers and Pollinators

As well as links to Wild Roseland ( www.wildroseland.org) to get involved and offer help with volunteer work parties there are a number of useful links if people are thinking about wild flower patches in their own gardens and encouraging pollinators....

An excellent project happening now on butterflies... good so see what is visiting your garden now is Butterfly Conservation’s Big Butterfly Count, another of those citizen science surveys. Big butterfly count Also a phone app to do the recording.

Cornwall AONB (which of course covers the Roseland) has an excellent project called WhealBuzzy. There are more than 190 species of bee in Cornwall with 120 being solitary species. The Cornish AONB is of national significance for its bee fauna. Opportunities to get involved. New educational pack good for schools etc. www.cornwall-aonb.gov.uk/wheal-buzzy
Eden Project is now home to the National Wildflower Centre. Worth a visit to Eden to see their wild flowers anyway. Although currently working on bigger projects (the original NWC was based in Liverpool where they helped with greening urban spaces across the NW.) I suspect they may have had some involvement with Cornwall Council Highways wildflower edges on the A30 in recent years. They sell small packs of local sourced seed but I think would also offer advice and help with harvesting local seed if you had a larger wild patch .www.edenproject.com/eden-story/our-ethos/national-wildflower-centre

Recipe time!

This week we’ve got a super simple, but very tasty recipe - maybe one to try with the kids?

Here’s Jenny Deal from Tregony to explain all:

Tabbouleh

175 gr. Bulgar wheat or cous cous
1 tsp. Salt
Approx 330 ml. Boiling water

Mix all 3 and Leave to stand for 15 - 20 minutes
Mix together 50 ml. Olive oil and 50 ml. Lemon juice.
Add lots of fresh mint and parsley chopped and 1 clove crushed garlic.
Leave for several hours or overnight and then add some chopped tomatoes and diced cucumber.

It’s Jenny Deal from Tregony again this week - with a great recipe if you’ve run out of flour.

Croustade

125 gr. Soft breadcrumbs
125 gr. Ground almonds or other ground nuts
50 gr. Butter melted
125 gr. Flaked almonds, pine nuts or chopped hazelnuts
1⁄2 tsp. Dried mixed herbs
1 crushed clove garlic

Mix these together and form into a pastry type consistency
press down into a shallow dish to form a case.
Bake in hot oven for 15 minutes until crisp and golden.
When cooked this can be filled with mushrooms in a white sauce, or leeks or really use any leftover veg.
Pop into the oven to heat through for 10 minutes

Recipe time!

We’re not quite professional enough here to have a recipe that includes saffron! But we do have a lovely spiced Apple cake recipe.

Another from Jenny Deal from Tregony Spiced Apple Cake

This recipe was given to me by my first husband’s grandmother c.1967

1 large or 2 small cooking apples, cooked to a puree with just a little water. Cool.
4 oz. Soft marg.
4oz. Caster sugar
1 tsp. Salt (yes 1 teaspoon)
1 tsp. Bicarb of soda
1 tsp. Mixed spice
4 oz. raisins.

Beat marg and sugar,
add egg, sifted flour, salt, spice and bicarb.
Stir in raisins.
Turn into lined 7 inch tin and cook for 1 hour at 160c or fan 150c.
20 mins.before end of cooking time sprinkle top with a heaped teaspoon of demerara sugar.

VE Day 75th Anniversary

Yesterday, 8th May, was the 75th Anniversary of VE Day. Whilst the Roseland wasn’t the most affected area of the country, or even the county during WW2, plenty went on here.

We weren’t able to do any interviews with anyone who was actually there at the time, so instead, I’m chatting with the next best thing - 2 gentleman who’ve been collecting the stories of what did happen from those who were there.

First up we’ve got Peter Teague from St Just sharing tales of bombings, and VE Day itself. We started by talking about the home guard.

If we go a little bit further back we come to an event which I think everyone must know the Roseland was involved in, and which was crucial on the path to VE Day - D Day.

VE Day 75th Anniversary

The 8th May is the 75th Anniversary of VE Day, next week our episode will be all about VE Day and how the war impacted the Roseland. We’ve a host of guests with fascinating stories to share - so do tune in, I bet you’ll learn something about the area you didn’t know!

Recipe time!

After several weeks now at home I imagine even those of us who love pottering around the kitchen might be running out inspiration - so we’re going to be bringing you some simple, tasty recipe ideas on the show.

This week we have another from Jenny Deal from Tregony and it’s her own recipe for “Fruity Potato Cakes”

125gr. Mashed potatoes
75 gr. SR flour with 1⁄2 tsp. Baking powder
25 gr. Margarine
25 gr. Sugar
1 tbs. Marmalade
25 gr. Dried fruit

Rub marg into flour and potato, add sugar, marmalade and fruit.

Knead lightly and form into a round on a floured board.

Pat out to about 1 cm thick and cut into rounds.

Grease a heavy frying pan and when hot cook the rounds of dough for 2 minutes each side.

Then lower the heat and cook gently for a further 5 or 6 minutes.

When cooked, sprinkle with a mixture of sugar and mixed spice or cinnamon.

Slice and butter.

VE Day 75th Anniversary

The 8th May is the 75th Anniversary of VE Day, last week I mentioned that Lindsey and I thought we’d try create an episode all about VE Day.

WOW! We’ve had an amazing response to our call for VE Day content - and will have a bumper VE Day episode for you on the 9th May. I’ve already recorded some of the interviews and it’s really interesting - I think you’re going to enjoy it.

Recipe time!

Our first is from Jenny Deal from Tregony and it’s her own recipe for “Lockdown Pudding”

Lock down pudding - for 2 people

Leftover cake (fruit cake with marzipan and icing if you have it) or any stale cake.
Break into pieces and put in a bowl.
Soak with brandy/rum or orange juice for non alcoholic version.
Beat an egg with some vanilla extract and cream if you have it (about 1⁄2 pint) or milk if you haven’t got cream.
If using plain cake add some dried fruit to soaking cake.
Add chocolate chips or broken up chocolate.
Pour egg mix over the soaking cake and stir.
Put into a dish and cook in oven in a bain marie (roasting tin filled to about 2 cm depth with
water) for about 25 to 30 mins.
At 160 fan. Serve with ice cream, custard or yoghurt.

The Roseland Podcast- hello and call for content

Over the last week, I’ve been trying to think of a way I can help people during these interesting times. (yes, I mean corvid 19).

Last night I had the genius idea of creating a super-local podcast, that just covers stuff going on on the Roseland. Well, stuff not going on would be a little more accurate!

This first episode is a call-out to find out what you’d like to me to share and find some people I can interview.

So, who am I, and why me to do this? Well, my name’s Chloe Thomas I grew up on the Roseland, and about 5 years ago I moved back. I live here full time working from home as a podcast host and author. My usual subject matter is eCommerce and digital marketing - so this is going to be a little bit of leap into the dark for me, but I’m hoping it’ll work!!

I don’t think this podcast should be a news channel - we’ve all got plenty of places we can access medical and political opinion, and there’s the Roseland Online website too. Plus, it’s hard to do a podcast in real-time - so any news updates would inevitably be old news by the time I got them live.

Rather an at-least weekly audio show where I chat to one or two people of the peninsula and provide updates on useful information. I’m thinking the following topics - but I’m open to ideas:

Services updates - takeaways, food deliveries, shop openings
Help updates - I know Roseland Surgery Patients Group are busy with this - anyone else let me know
Art, Culture, History - we’ve got lots of clever and interesting people here on the Roseland - who has a story to tell? Old Cornwall got any projects worth sharing? Any of our local authors fancy having a chat about your latest book?
Education - any tutors fancy giving some tips on homeschooling?
Religion - a lot of people will be missing their regular church and chapel services maybe we can do something to help here?
Sport - in normal times I’d suggest updates from the local sports clubs.. .but not really sure how to include sport!
Nature and farming - spring is all around us - anyone want to come on and talk about it?
Music - got to be careful with copyright but there might be a way to add some

I can’t get out and about to find great content - so I’m relying on you to let me know if you’ve got something to share, or if you know of someone who I should be in contact with.
