Belinda Kirk is an explorer and the leading campaigner promoting the benefits of adventure on wellbeing. For the past twenty-five years, she has led dozens of international expeditions and remote filming trips. Belinda has walked through Nicaragua, sailed across the Atlantic, searched for camels in China’s Desert of Death, discovered ancient rock paintings in Lesotho, and gained a Guinness World Record for rowing unsupported around Britain. She has led numerous youth development challenges, pioneered inclusive expeditions for people with disabilities, and managed scientific research missions in the Amazon, Sinai, and Alaska. In 2009, Belinda established Explorers Connect, a non-profit organization connecting people to adventure, and has encouraged 30,000 ordinary people to engage in outdoor challenges. In 2020 she launched the first conference to explore the Adventure Effect, the positive impact that adventurous activity has on wellbeing.

After needing a break from her career in film and TV, Sophie took a very fortuitous turn in her life by finding the most random job she could, milking camels. If you didn’t realize camels could be milked, neither did I. 

To make a long story short, Sophie fell in love with camels and never went back to her old career. Her ongoing 5-year passion for camels has taken her to places like The Flinders Ranges, Lake Eyre and The Tirari Desert, Uluru, Michigan USA, Texas, and Rajasthan India. 

At some point in the pursuit to learn more about these amazing creatures, Sophie got the idea to cross Australia on foot while being accompanied by 5 wild (or “feral”) camels. This would not only entail catching and taming 5 out of upwards of a million wild camels that roam Australia but also walking thousands of kilometers across the vast and void Australian Outback. Keep in mind, Australia is the geographic size of the US with 1/10th of the population. A wild idea indeed!

Today Sophie joins us from just over the halfway point of the journey in the bizarre little town of Coober Pedy.

Thru-hiking triple crown: Nic's journey from quitting his 9-5 job on doctor's orders to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail for rebirth, completing the AT and Continental Divide Trail, and gearing up for the Pacific Crest Trail, all while embracing the kilt as a symbol of freedom, hope, and warmth.

Many of us reminisce or daydream of times thru-hiking a spectacular trail. Not as many of us have a kilt on during that daydream. For Nic, the kilt is a beacon of freedom, hope and warmth (you’ll have to listen to learn more about that). 

After years of living the old 9-5 story, Nic was tired of the way life was going. He decided, on doctors orders, to quit his job and thru-hike the Appalachian Trail to be “reborn” into a life he was more excited about. 

He has now completed the AT, the Continental Divide Trail and Pacific Crest Trail. We caught up with Nic before his PCT hike.

This love of adventure has led her to be the world’s leading women for total ‘fastest known times’, or FKTs, a challenge to do an outdoor route or trail faster than anyone has done it before. To date, she has 39 of these records with no other woman in the world having more.

Her most recent FKT attempt was to cross, on foot, 165-miles of the arid moonscape that is Death Valley. The journey was treacherous and beautiful. It was everything in one. The challenges she faced out there were not what you would expect from a desert either.

Matt Harmody was part of a team of living kidney donors who set out to summit the high points in all 50 states to illustrate that kidney donors go not not only to live normal lives, but can accomplish amazing feats. Matt shares his personal story beginning in 1980 when his father was diagnosed with renal failure, leading to a long journey of dialysis treatment. From UK police officer to leadership adventurer who journeyed to the North Pole to raise funding to start a school for hearing and speaking disabled children in Africa, Phil Wall has a long list of adventures. Mike Chambers and his adventure partner, Jason Antin, think otherwise. In fact, they think you can leave the office on Friday at 5pm, have an adventure of a lifetime and be back at work at 9am on Monday. Is it easy? Of course not. Is it worth it? C’mon now. 

It all started when Mike was living in Boston and Jason was based in Colorado and the two came up with the bright idea of summiting Mt. Rainier in a true weekend. To the astonishment of the park rangers that hesitantly granted them the permit, their plan worked. Although the morning meetings that Monday were not as productive as they usually were, they both walked away with a pretty epic response to the age-old question, “what did you do this weekend?” 

Once the concept of Beat Monday was proven, Jason and Mike began dreaming of what else could be possible with this format. Bikerafting, big wall climbing, ultrarunning, and international travel began to fill their weekends and was even made into an OutsideTV series, Beat Monday.

Pip is also a keen runner and in 2014 at the age of 41 Pip competed in her first ever ultra marathon running race - the Lakeland 50. With the bug for running, Pip went on - at the age of 44 in 2017, alongside her friend Charles Hill, become the only pair in history to ever compete in and finish the Three Peaks Yacht race as a team of two people.

In this episode, Mason and Curt reflect on the past decade of the Adventure Sports Podcast, discussing the evolution of podcasting and their personal journeys. In August of 2024, Alden raced in the Silk Road Mountain Race, a 1,200-mile, unsupported bikepacking race in Kyrgyzstan. With nearly 100,000ft of elevation gain, it's often touted as the toughest bike race in the world. A crash on Alden's 14th day of racing put him out of the general classification, but he was able to fix his bike and complete the ride, earning himself a finisher's stamp as the 100th rider to finish out of 101 finishers.

Alden Roth is a filmmaker, ultrarunner, and endurance bikepacker from West Virginia. He's the newest member of the Parks and Recreation Board in Charles Town, WV, his hometown and is also a co-owner of Rocketfuel Studios, a video production company that tells stories about food and the outdoors. Alden has completed several ultramarathons, including a sub-24-hour finish at Rim to River 100 and several multi-day bike tours and races.

Renata is a legendary Czech-born adventurer and mountaineer. She was the first Swedish and Czech woman to climb Mount Everest and was listed in Outside Magazine as one of the world’s “25 adventure goddesses." 

In 2005, after the death of her partner, Göran Kropp (also a well-known adventurer), she embarked on what she calls the "Around America Adventure". She would circumnavigate the lower 48 US states by bike and kayak. When biking, she would pull her kayak behind her with a set of two wheels and while kayaking, she would ship her bike ahead of her at the next portion of the trip.  

She started in Seattle and paddled to San Diego, bicycled San Diego to Brownsville, Texas, continued kayaking around Florida to Eastport, Maine, and then bicycled back to Seattle across the northern portion of the US. Through this experience she became the first person to circumnavigate the US this way. This is a wild, unique, and beautiful story of what a true adventure really means.

Through podcast and film, Fitz Cahall has helped tell stories that define the outdoor community. He founded the original outdoor podcast, the Dirtbag Diaries, back in 2007 and co-hosts Climbing Gold with Alex Honnold. 

His new book, States of Adventure, pulls together 30 stories from past podcast episodes that will inspire you to pack a rucksack, head outside and push yourself to new heights. From completing the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route in a wheelchair bike to swapping the city for vanlife in Yosemite, States of Adventure promises a host of real-world adventures stronger than fiction.

Patrick and Michael have been living with Type 1 Diabetes for most of their lives. Feeling a bit isolated and hesitant as children to venture too far away from available insulin or glucose monitoring tools, they individually pursuit adventurous lives before coming together to show the world anything is possible with T1D through their latest adventure, Project 50-IN-50

They climbed the 50 highpoints of each U.S. state and finished in 49 days – making them the first people with Type 1 diabetes to complete this achievement and joining an elite group of fewer than five people to do so the fastest in the world.

Over the course of the 2019 summer, the team road-tripped over 17,000 miles to hike, run, climb and ski through 315 miles of trails. Patrick is the first person with T1D to successfully summit the highest peak in each of the 50 states. Michael experienced an emergency Life Flight off of Granite Peak in Montana and had to miss out on a handful of the peaks. Thankfully, he’s made a full recovery. After loads of tears and challenges along the way, Patrick and Michael persevered to complete their challenge.

Project 50-IN-50 is an initiative of The Diabetes Family Connection, a North Carolina based 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. In addition to achieving a new milestone in mountaineering, Michael and Patrick have grown local and global communities of people with diabetes inspired to get outside and enjoy the outdoors.

In preparation for this bicycle trip, Spencer moved into a van, cut the expenses of his life down to save money so he could take this time off. This bike trip was only the beginning of a larger advocacy project. Spencer’s goal is to make sure that if you hike or bike into a federally

managed campground, there will always be a cheap place for you to stay. This will provide the necessary support for people who are recreating without a car and offer an incentive to others to leave their car at home.

After growing up on a farm in Saskatchewan, Bernadette got the taste of mountain living on a family trip to Banff, Alberta. She was so awestruck by the Canadian Rockies that she eventually moved there and worked at the Banff Centre, directing the Banff Mountain Festivals and starting a new division – Mountain Culture at The Banff Centre.

Beyond traditional 5Ks and 10Ks and single sport extreme and endurance events, is the newly evolving field of multisport. Multisport events are usually self-designed and determined. These extreme athletes most often create their own events because they are the first to do these human-powered endurance challenges.

However, as life often does, it threw Matt a tough curveball with what seemed like an unsolvable problem. His balance was off, he was constantly exhausted, and his vision was blurry.

After months of doctor appointments, ER visits, and no answers, Matt was left with a sense of bewilderment about the changes happening to him. After collapsing on a work trip and being rushed to the hospital by his work colleagues, he was finally diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and told he would be wheelchair-bound within five years. 

Today, we’ll hear about Matt’s journey since the diagnosis, how he got back into running, and how he set his goals far beyond what he imagined before this life-altering news. This leads us to what’s next. Starting June 15th, Matt is planning to run from Lincoln, Nebraska, to Casey, Iowa, in an effort to raise awareness and funds for MS Run the US. Summiting mountains in South America, bikepacking in the desert and climbing classic big wall routes sound like epic adventures that you’d have to save lots of vacation days for, right? The travel alone would take up at least a day or two, especially for any international trips. Not to mention making arrangements for other responsibilities like kids, pets, work, etc. 

Mike Chambers and his adventure partner, Jason Antin, think otherwise. In fact, they think you can leave the office on Friday at 5pm, have an adventure of a lifetime and be back at work at 9am on Monday. Is it easy? Of course not. Is it worth it? C’mon now. 

It all started when Mike was living in Boston and Jason was based in Colorado and the two came up with the bright idea of summiting Mt. Rainier in a true weekend. To the astonishment of the park rangers that hesitantly granted them the permit, their plan worked. Although the morning meetings that Monday were not as productive as they usually were, they both walked away with a pretty epic response to the age-old question, “what did you do this weekend?” 

Once the concept of Beat Monday was proven, Jason and Mike began dreaming of what else could be possible with this format. Bikerafting, big wall climbing, ultrarunning, and international travel began to fill their weekends and was even made into an OutsideTV series, Beat Monday.

A quick Google Maps search and a few emails later, Laura devised a plan to elevate women’s sports higher than it has ever gone, literally. The idea was to gather a group of women to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro and play an official game of soccer near the summit. 

The journey became a gathering of 60 women from around the world with referees, goals, etc. all climbing above 18,000 ft. to play a soccer game. Their efforts stand as a Guinness World Record, a testament to their dedication to raising the coverage and opportunity for women in sports, and was the genesis of Equal Playing Field, a non-profit Laura co-founded. 

After the success of climbing Kilimanjaro, Laura continued to chase Guinness World Record soccer matches to raise awareness for women in sports and show the world women can do anything. The lowest elevation soccer game was played at the Dead Sea in 2018, and two world records were achieved in France thereafter for the most nationalities represented in a soccer game. 

The long-term action Laura has taken is through her startup, Ida Sports, which is aiming to create a soccer boot specific to women, something that has never been done successfully, but something needed due to fundamental differences in men's and women’s feet. 

If you learn anything from Laura, it’s that you shouldn’t be afraid of going down a path no one has ever gone before, especially if a better world is on the other side.

Through months of training, planning, and preparing, Gillian set out with 17 other women from 12 nationalities to trek across the Namibian Desert. They collectively raised close to USD $70,000 for female survivors of war through Women on a Mission. Their mutual dedication to this cause not only pushed them beyond what they thought were their limits, but also wove the unbreakable bonds of sisterhood. 

The expedition covered 144km (89.5 miles) over 5 days, scalings over 4,000 meters of the some of the world’s tallest sand dunes.

When Adrian’s wife thought it would be a good idea to learn how to Paraglide, she probably didn’t foresee that in a relatively short amount of time, her husband would be summiting and flying solo off volcanoes near their home in Mexico City.

Obviously, Adrian took to the sport quickly and it gave him a completely different view of his other favorite hobby, climbing. But with their recent family addition of a little girl and limited time off work, Adrian needed a way to summit mountains over 18,000 feet and return home in the same day. Kristin Knight Pace is one tough person. Not many people would go to Alaska during the winter, completely alone, to take care of a team of sled dogs to get over a recent divorce. However, that's exactly what she did. That toughness has also led her to become one of only 29 women to complete both the Iditarod and the Yukon Question 1000-mile sled dog races.

Wesley was born with a mild form of cerebral palsy which affects his fine motor skills on the right side of his body. The only problem? He finds peace and joy climbing mountains and hiking trails in places that folks with cerebral palsy “aren’t supposed to go”. 

He couldn’t let that stop him. His love for the outdoors has led him to climb every mountain in Colorado over 14,000 ft (54 of them), thru-hike the Pacific Crest Trail (2,653 miles) from Mexico to Canada, and has ultimately led to a career in the outdoors.

Today Curt joins Mason for a bonus episode to reflect on the 1,000 episode milestone!

The Ohio Project was born. Alsup proceeded to traversed 3,416 miles by foot, bike, and rollerblades focused on seeing as much of Ohio as possible. She bikepacked 850 miles along the entire length of the Ohio River, thru hiked the 1,444 mile Buckeye Trail, bikepacked 796 miles around the entire perimeter of Lake Erie, and then did a bike/rollerblade combo of 326 mile Ohio to Erie Trail from Cleveland to Cincinnati.

Alsup is currently working on a body of artwork about the beauty of the Ohio Region, and its natural wonder, historical importance, and the kindness of its residents. She will be showing her art in exhibitions and festivals, and selling her work on her website. She hopes her project will spread appreciation for Ohio, encouraging its natural protection, and for residents to explore their own backyards.

Jacob Myers thru-hiked the Arizona Trail early this year and is joining us today to tell us all about it! Not only was the desert vastly different from the lush, rainforest-like Appalachian Mountains he grew up in, but it was one of the driest summers on record in Arizona, making the adjustment even more challenging. He dealt with sun poisoning, lack of water, and extreme heat. 

His next adventure will be quite literally on the opposite end of the spectrum...crossing glaciers in Norway.

An avid sailor, naval architect and New York Times best-selling author, Steve Callahan designed and built his 21' sloop the Napoleon Solo to sail it across the Atlantic Ocean from Newport, RI to England with plans to compete in a regatta. Once underway in the race, Steve experienced issues with the boat and was forced to drop out. Once repairs were made, he continued on his way only to be stopped in his tracks in the middle of the ocean when his sailboat was struck and began to sink.

Despite these massive adventures, Alastair is most famous for coining the concept of “microadventures” which earned him National Geographic Adventurer of the Year and numerous awards for his book of that name. The whole point of microadventures is that you do not need much time, money or specialized gear. A microadventure can be anything that feels fresh, new and challenging for you. This was the subject of our last conversation with Alastair back in 2019. You can listen to that here.

Most recently Alastair has spent a whole year exploring the land within 10 kilometers of his home. Every week, he would pick a new place within that range to explore and camp. As if climbing a typical 14,000 ft mountain isn't enough of an accomplishment, Junaid and his buddy, successfully summited every one of the 58 Colorado 14ers in a single continuous hike. The journey was about 1,300 miles with a total elevation gain close to 300,000 feet. They hiked desolate Forest Service roads, class 5 traverses, many sections of the Colorado and Continental Divide Trail, as well as cross-country travel. It's an epic adventure to say the least!

Although this trip was NOTHING compared to what some of our guests have done, it was a fun micro-adventure that got way more press and attention than I thought it would. 

My good friend, Jordon, and I set out on New Year's Eve to be the first people (we know of) to paddle across the largest lake in Florida, Lake Okeechobee. The route was a straight shot from North to South for 35 miles, taking just under 12 hours.

Also, if you don’t have months off work and life to do something fun, take it from me, 11.5 hours is plenty of time to get all the same fulfillment and soul-filling adventure!

Several years ago, Randy Brandt and his then teenage son were out hiking when they ran into an older man who shared that he had just completed visiting all the National Parks. From that moment forward, Randy was inspired and made it a goal of doing more adventures and not simply waiting around for retirement to do the things he wanted to do.

He has now visited over 30 National Parks and participated in countless challenges, including bikepacking the Arizona Trail, Colorado Trail, and the Tour Divide in a calendar year, running an ultra marathon, and riding motorcycles through the Himalayas of India!

Thru Hiking any one of the Triple Crown trails is a mighty feat in and of its own. Then you have the Triple Crown itself once you've successfully thru hiked all three trails. Now, imagine having completed all three Triple Crown trails three times each! Clint "Lint" Bunting is one of three people in the world known to have accomplished this monumental goal and he is on the show today to give us a taste of his 30,000 miles on the trail.

Today we’re honing in on Kurt’s recent completion (only the third ever) of biking the CDT. Yes, most of the CDT is bikeable (I didn’t know this), with the opportunity to take different routes through the non-bikeable wilderness segments. This trail is hard so even for a seasoned and record-breaking cyclist like Kurt, the mileage doesn’t come easy. 

Rugged backcountry trails are where he loves riding the most. He rides for the Industry Nine - Pivot Pro Backcountry team, and beyond pedaling his bike, Kurt is a co-founder of and the Routes Director at Bikepacking Roots, a cycling coach, a former geology professor, and an advocate for landscapes, backcountry trails, and climate.

Felicity Aston MBE is a British Polar Explorer, author, speaker and expedition leader. In 2012, she became the first woman to ski alone across Antarctica, a journey of 1084 miles that took 59 days to complete. That expedition garnered her a Guinness World Record. She has also been elected Fellow of both the Royal Geographical Society in London and The Explorers Club in New York.

Her love for polar exploration began at the age of 23 at Rothera Research Station on the Antarctic Peninsula, where she monitored the climate as a meteorologist.

Her expeditions have taken her to places like Greenland, where she became the first British woman to cross the giant landmass, both the North and South Pole, and to leading numerous record-breaking adventures all over the world, involving all women teams.

Her story is truly inspirational and her achievements are downright amazing.

Greg Morrissey is an educator, explorer, and founder of Mountain Goat Movement -- an organization that is dedicated to providing transformative adventures from the Adirondacks to Antarctica while connecting folks to inspiring explorers, mountain athletes, and storytellers. 

He was a teacher for over a decade and would take his students on adventures every break. After seeing the need for more young people to have life-changing adventures, he jumped in full-time and started the Mountain Goat Movement. He now guides trips throughout the year taking young people to the furthest reaches of our planet to instill in them the power of adventure and purpose.

Luke Kloberdanz visits with Curt about his thru hike of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, a thousand-mile footpath that highlights these landscape features as it travels through some of the state’s most beautiful natural areas. The Trail is entirely within Wisconsin and is one of only eleven National Scenic Trails.

But the Ice Age Trail is more than a path through the woods. It is a place for mental and physical rejuvenation, a place to unwind after a hard day and enjoy the landscape of Wisconsin. More than 1 million people use the Ice Age Trail each year to hike and snowshoe, to backpack, to disconnect and reconnect.

Behind the scenes, a vibrant community of volunteers across the state work to build and maintain the Trail, making it one of the country’s best hiking experiences.

Despite a life-altering hunting accident in 1997 that caused him to lose his sight, Lonnie found the courage and determination to raise his three daughters as a single father in small-town Indiana, teaching them all to hunt and fish — and, against all odds, to drive. After the kids were grown and moved out, Lonnie was looking for another challenge. 

Through adaptive sports organizations Lonnie began to get the opportunity to do some amazing adventures. Fast forward a few years and Lonnie is a National Geographic 2015 Adventurer of the Year. He has kayaked some of the most challenging whitewater in the world and is responsible for first blind descents of Africa’s fabled Zambezi River and West Virginia’s world-renowned Gauley River. Lonnie is best known for his first descent of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. 

In May of 2023, Lonnie Bedwell became the first blind veteran to climb Mt Everest. He was accompanied by friends and climbing partners Michael Neal and Bryan Hill. Before the climb, Michael and Bryan rode their bicycles across India to set a world record for the fastest known time from sea level to Everest’s summit. We’ll have Michael on next week to share that story.

Kait loves moving up and down mountains, through canyons, across deserts, down rivers and sleeping outside. She discovered the mountain bike amidst a career in outdoor education and quickly fell in love with bikepacking which dominoed into pursuing long bikepacking expeditions around the world.

That led to racing to see if she could, which turned into wondering what her best looked like. Kait then won a 24-hr World Championship, set records in self- supported ultras that rival the strongest men. 

One day, after leaving the grocery story, she was struck by an oncoming vehicle that lost traction in the snow. She survived and overcome the traumatic car accident which has ultimately led her to where she is now - a passionate and dedicated backcountry mountain biker who rides to go deeper, connect to place and people, and expand her limits. Beyond the bike, Kait loves time at home in the Tetons with her husband, Will and their dog Hank. Dog rides, powder-filled backcountry ski days with Will, and strong coffee balance her pursuit of her mantra, “you are unlimited.”
