As we approach our country's 48^th Independence, we pause to reflect on what differentiates us from the rest of The West Indies and the rest of the world.

What is Bahamian Culture?
The Bahamas has a distinct culture which has evolved over generations, from a mixture of mostly African, combined with some British and American influences, which developed into a unique and colourful style of Bahamian self-expression.

Bahamians are best described as easy-going, friendly and hospitable. The adult literacy rate, in The Bahamas, is over 90% and the country has experienced a rapid growth in the professional class and university educated workforce. When you hear Bahamian Culture, Junkanoo is usually the first thing that comes to mind. So what is Junkanoo? (Include Other Genres)
It is a type of street celebration which occurs on December 26 (Boxing Day) and New Year's Day (January 1), and on similar dates on the family islands. This traditional celebration was started with an African slave by the name of John Canoe. Slaves were given a special holiday at Christmas time, when they could leave the work of the plantation behind and celebrate their freedoms. Source - Wikipedia
Language ( Bahamian Dialect AKA Bahamianese)
English is the official language of the Bahamas. A vast majority of the population speaks Bahamian Dialect, which is a dialect of English intermediate between Standard English and Bahamian Creole. There are some minor regional differences from island to island in terms of pronunciation, but generally all are the same.

African influence & Gullah/Geechee Connections

In Bahamian dialect, some African words and expressions have been retained, such as:

yinna - you (plural)
nanny - (v.n.)- feces or the act of defecation
muddo/muddasick – A exclamation of disbelief
Jumbay - ghost, related to the Kongo word nzumbi of similar meaning
Yam - to eat, still in use in some southern and eastern islands, related to the African word nyam'
Bey - meaning boy or a young boy or young lady
Boongie/Boonkey – Your rear end (usually a woman's)

What is Womanism?

The term was first coined by American author Alice Walker (The Color Purple) in the short story COMING APART - 1979 Womanism is a social theory based on the history and everyday experiences of women of color, especially black women. It seeks, according to womanist scholar Layli Maparyan (Phillips), to "restore the balance between people and the environment/nature and reconcile human life with the spiritual dimension". The difference between womanism and feminism being; womanism is "family-oriented" and focuses on race, class, and gender, while feminism is "female-oriented" and strictly focuses on biological sex-related issues women and girls face, globally.

Black Feminist

Black feminism is a philosophy that centers on the idea that "Black women are inherently valuable, that [Black women's] liberation is a necessity not as an adjunct to somebody else's but because of our need as human persons for autonomy."

Black feminist theory contends that black women have an acute understanding of the negative impacts of sexism, racism, and class discrimination. Furthermore, race, gender, and class discrimination are all aspects of the same system of hierarchy, namely the "imperialist white supremacist capitalist patriarchy". Due to their inter-dependency, they combine to create something more than experiencing racism and sexism independently.

Proponents of black feminism argue that black women are positioned within structures of power in fundamentally different ways than white women. In the early 21st century the tag "white feminist" gained currency to criticize feminist who avoid issues of intersectionality. Critics of black feminism argue that divisions along the lines of race or gender weaken the strength of the overall feminist movement and anti-racist movements.

Africana Womanism
"Africana womanism" is a term coined in the late 1980s by Clenora Hudson-Weems intended as an ideology applicable to all women of African descent. It is grounded in African culture and Afrocentrism and focuses on the experiences, struggles, needs, and desires of Africana women of the African diaspora. It distinguishes itself from feminism or Alice Walker's womanism. Africana womanism pays more attention to and focuses more on the realities and the injustices in society in regard to race.

The 18 characteristics of African Womanism are the following: Self-Naming, Self-Definition, Family-Centeredness, Wholeness, Role Flexibility, Adaptability, Authenticity, Black Female Sisterhood, Struggling with males against oppression, Male Compatibility, Recognition, Ambition, Nurturing, Strengthen, Respect, Respect for Elders, Mothering, and Spirituality.

Where do men fit into all of this?

Africana men can embrace an Africana womanist approach. According to Tolagbe Ogunlege (1998), "Referring to a man as a male-womanist is not an anomaly or rarity, and bestowing gender-specific title on individuals of the opposite sex has been practiced by Africana peoples for millennia. For example, among the Yoruba, an exceptional woman who has made significant contributions to the educational, socioeconomic, and/or spiritual growth and development of her family and community is referred to as a man-woman or obinrin bi okunrin." Ogunlege further explains that among the Lebou people of Senegal, a man who governs according to ancient customs is referred to as the "Mother of the Country".

The Pros:

Some of the arguments for medical marijuana include:

Marijuana is effective in relieving nausea and vomiting. Studies have shown that pharmaceutical cannabis can decrease nausea caused by chemotherapy used to treat cancer and almost completely eliminate vomiting.

Marijuana can relieve the spasticity of the muscles that is sometimes associated with multiple sclerosis and paralysis.

Marijuana can help treat appetite loss associated with conditions such as HIV/AIDS and certain types of cancers.

Marijuana can relieve certain types of chronic pain, including neuropathic pain.

Marijuana is safer than some other medications prescribed to treat the same symptoms. For example, it may be used instead of opioids for pain management. Opioids are highly addictive and are typically not recommended for long-term use in treating chronic pain.

Cannabis does not need to be smoked to be medically beneficial. Products such as cannabidiol (CBD) oils, topical pain relief treatments, edibles, and other non-smoking applications are now available.

As research continues, more of the individual compounds in cannabis are being found to be beneficial. When isolated—such as CBD has been—these may lead to further advancements in medical treatment options without the "high" produced by the compound commonly known as THC.

Marijuana has been used for centuries as a natural medicinal agent to good effect.

Frequent marijuana use can seriously affect your short-term memory.

Frequent use can impair your cognitive ability

Smoking anything, whether it's tobacco or marijuana, can seriously damage your lung tissue.

Smoked marijuana contains cancer-causing compounds.

Marijuana has been implicated in a high percentage of automobile crashes and workplace accidents.

Marijuana is illegal under federal law. It is classified as a Schedule I drug in the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), alongside heroin. This classification says that the substances have no currently accepted medicinal value

What does the term Statutory Rape mean? Statutory rape is the act of having consensual intercourse with someone who you know or should have known is under 18 years of age. How does Bahamian law define rape?

Rape is the act of any person not under fourteen years of age having sexual intercourse with another person who is not his spouse — (a) without the consent of that other person; (b) without consent which has been extorted by threats or fear of bodily harm; (c) with consent obtained by personating the spouse of that other person; or (d) with consent obtained by false and fraudulent representations as to the nature and quality of the act Source: The Bahamas Sexual Offenses Act. Article 11 States: (a) has unlawful sexual intercourse with any person being of or above fourteen years of age and under sixteen years of age, whether with or without the consent of the person with whom he had unlawful sexual intercourse; or (b) attempts to have unlawful sexual intercourse with any person being of or above fourteen years of age and under sixteen years of age, whether with or without the consent of the person with whom he attempted to have unlawful sexual intercourse, is guilty of an offense and liable to imprisonment for life. How do we understand this?

Exactly how widespread is the problem of adults, preying on and molesting minors? It's been said that the actions of Mr. Robinson are well known and well documented, so how far does the accountability stretch?

A lot of the response to situations like these is, “These young people too fast” is there any validity to these statements? Swift judgment and justice usually come to male predators, but for some odd reason, female predators get a pass. Why?

If you notice, the laws are not gender-specific Bahamian Society are the most at fault. On the surface, they claim the moral high ground, when in reality this behavior is not just tolerated, but promoted and encouraged. Usually under the guises of humor, culture, the pursuit of rights, justice, acceptance, or equality. (Responses)

Should a citizen’s vehicle be rear-ended in an accident, the offending vehicle is automatically in the wrong, no questions asked, just shut up because you’re wrong?

With the recent passing of Hurricane Isaias, NEMA decided to give an all-clear for the entire Bahamas even when Abaco and Grand Bahama were still feeling the effects, albeit the tail end of the storm. The sentiments on social media were that Grand Bahama was basically the step-child of The Bahamas. Now for the years, I've been here there have always been whispers of Grand Bahama becoming its own independent nation and succeeding from The Commonwealth, maybe because it was the frustration of the situation but those whispers seemed a little louder after that all-clear was given. How feasible & plausible is it for Grand Bahama to succeed from The Commonwealth and become its own independent nation or territory?

Bahamians tend to walk the street, sometimes with reckless abandon with the perception that “all pedestrians have the right of way” is this true?
Should a citizen’s vehicle be rear ended in an accident, the offending vehicle is automatically in the wrong, no questions asked, just shut up because you’re wrong?
What is the first thing citizens should do should they find themselves in an accident?
Vehicle tints being to dark, is that an actual offense?
Law Enforcement show up to your home or stop your vehicle and want to search without a search warrant, you refuse, the push ahead and search anyway claiming “suspicion” is that legal?
If someone breaks into my home or business, I lickin’ shots. Apparently where I shoot them though determines what happens to me, can you give some clarification?
Is there a Bahamian version of Miranda rights, or is it “ya fuckin’ lock up?” B) If a citizen is person of interest and is brought in for just questioning, not under arrest, should they be questioned without an attorney? C) Can they get up and leave if they are not under arrest?
