In this activity, we will use the documentation that we created in the previous Packet Tracer - Troubleshooting Challenge - Document the Network activity to guide network troubleshooting efforts.

It has been discovered that the network that we worked with in the previous PT activity has developed communication problems. Some hosts are unable to ping other hosts and the internet server. It is our job to determine what the issues are and to locate and repair them.

Network issues could exist in any device. Be sure to check for comprehensive errors: Addressing configuration, Interface activation, Routing, and NAT

We will be using various techniques and tools to identify connectivity issues, Use documentation to guide troubleshooting efforts, Identify specific network problems, Implement solutions to network communication problems, and Verify network operation.

This activity uses a variety of technologies that you have encountered during your CCNA studies, including IPv4 routing, IPv6 routing, port security, EtherChannel, DHCP, and NAT. Our task is to review the requirements, isolate and resolve any problems, and then document the steps we took to verify the requirements.

The company replaced routers R1 and R3 to accommodate a fiber connection between the locations. Configurations from the previous routers with serial connections were modified and applied as a starting configuration. IPv6 is being tested on a small portion of the network and needs to be verified.

Note: Passwords have been removed for ease of troubleshooting in this exercise. The typical password protections should be reapplied; however, the activity will not grade those items.

A network administrator has been asked to investigate a new client’s network. Documentation is incomplete for the network, so some information needs to be discovered. In addition, the NTP server needs to be configured on a router. Discovery protocols must also be adjusted to control traffic discovery protocol traffic and prevent information about the network from being received by potentially unauthorized hosts.

Some of the device IP addresses are unknown to us. We must determine what the IP addresses are so that we can connect to the devices over SSH in order to configure them. We can enter them into the Addressing Table as you discover them.

A TFTP server can help manage the storage of IOS images and revisions to IOS images. For any network, it is good practice to keep a backup copy of the Cisco IOS Software image in case the system image in the router becomes corrupted or accidentally erased. A TFTP server can also be used to store new upgrades to the IOS and then deployed throughout the network where it is needed. In this activity, we will upgrade the IOS images on Cisco devices by using a TFTP server. We will also backup an IOS image with the use of a TFTP server.

In this activity we will restore a configuration from a backup and then perform a new backup. Due to an equipment failure, a new router has been put in place. Network Time Protocol (NTP) synchronizes the time of day among a set of distributed time servers and clients. While there are a number of applications that require synchronized time, this lab will focus on correlating events that are listed in the system log and other time-specific events from multiple network devices. NTP uses the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) as its transport protocol. All NTP communications use Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

An NTP server usually receives its time from an authoritative time source, such as an atomic clock attached to a time server. The NTP server then distributes this time across the network. NTP is extremely efficient. No more than one packet per minute is necessary to synchronize two devices to within a millisecond of each other.

We will be configuring NTP on R1 and R2 to allow time synchronization.

Network security and traffic flow control are important issues when designing and managing IP networks. The ability to configure proper rules to filter packets, based on established security policies, is a valuable skill.

In this lab, we will set up filtering rules for two business locations that are represented by R1 and R3. Management has established some access policies between the LANs located at R1 and R3, which we must implement. The Edge router sitting between R1 and R3 has been provided by the ISP will not have any ACLs placed on it. We are the network administrator for a branch office of a larger organization. Our branch is adding a new wireless network into an existing branch office LAN. The existing network is configured to exchange routes using OSPFv2 in a single-area configuration. Our task is to verify the operation of the existing OSPFv2 network, before adding in the new LAN. When we are sure that the current OSPFv2 LAN is operating correctly, we will connect the new LAN and verify that OSPF routes are being propagated for the new LAN. As branch office network administrator, we have full access to the IOS on routers R3 and R4. We only have read access to the enterprise LAN routers R1 and R2, using the username BranchAdmin, and the password Branch1234.

We will be discussing the CLI commands to verify the operation of an existing OSPFv2 network. In Part 2, we will add a new LAN to the configuration and verify connectivity, identify and verify the status of OSPF neighbors, determine how the routes are being learned in the network, explain how the neighbor state is determined, examine the settings for the OSPF process ID, and finally add a new LAN into an existing OSPF network and verify connectivity.

We have already configured and tested the WLC with an existing WLAN. We configured WPA2-PSK for that WLAN because it was to be used in a smaller business. We have been asked to configure and test a WLC topology that will be used in a larger enterprise. We know that WPA2-PSK does not scale well and is not appropriate to use in an enterprise network. This new topology will use a RADIUS server and WPA2-Enterprise to authenticate WLAN users. This allows administration of the user accounts from a central location and provides enhanced security and transparency because each account has its own username and password. In addition, user activity is logged on the server.

In this lab, we will create a new VLAN interface, use that interface to create a new WLAN, and secure that WLAN with WPA2-Enterprise. We will also configure the WLC to use the enterprise RADIUS server to authenticate users. In addition, we will configure the WLC to use a SNMP server.

We will be configuring a new WLAN on a wireless LAN controller (WLC), including the VLAN interface that it will use. We will configure the WLAN to use a RADIUS server and WPA2-Enterprise to authenticate users. We will also configure the WLC to use an SNMP server, Configure a new VLAN interface on a WLC, Configure a new WLAN on a WLC, Configure a new scope on the WLC internal DHCP server, Configure the WLC with SNMP settings, Configure the WLC to user a RADIUS server to authenticate WLAN users, Secure a WLAN with WPA2-Enterprise, and Connect hosts to the new WLC.

An organization is centralizing control of their wireless LAN by replacing their standalone access points with lightweight access points (LAP) and a wireless LAN controller (WLC). We will be leading this project and we want to become familiar with the WLC and any potential challenges that may occur during the project. We will configure a WLC by adding a new wireless network and securing it with WPA-2 PSK security. To test the configuration, we will connect a laptop to the WLAN and ping devices on the network.

We will be exploring some of the features of a wireless LAN controller. We will create a new WLAN on the controller and implement security on that LAN. Then we will configure a wireless host to connect to the new WLAN through an AP that is under the control of the WLC. Spanning Tree Protocol provides loop-free redundancy between switches within a LAN. However, it does not provide redundant default gateways for end-user devices within the network if a gateway router fails. First Hop Redundancy Protocols (FHRPs) provide redundant default gateways for end devices with no additional end-user configuration necessary. By using a FHRP, two or more routers can share the same virtual IP address and MAC address and can act as a single virtual router. Hosts on the network are configured with a shared IP address as their default gateway. In this activity, we will configure Cisco’s Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP), which is an FHRP. We will configure HSRP on routers, which serve as the default gateways for the hosts on LAN 1 and LAN 2. When we configure HSRP, we will create a virtual gateway that uses the same default gateway address for hosts in both LANs. If one gateway router becomes unavailable, the second router will take over using the same default gateway address that was used by the first router. Because the hosts on the LANs are configured with the IP address of the virtual gateway as the default gateway, the hosts will regain connectivity to remote networks after HSRP activates the remaining router.

We will be configuring Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP) to provide redundant default gateway devices to hosts on LANs. After configuring HSRP, we will test the configuration to verify that hosts are able to use the redundant default gateway if the current gateway device becomes unavailable. Configure an HSRP active router, Configure an HSRP standby router, and Verify HSRP operation.

Three switches have just been installed. There are redundant uplinks between the switches. As configured, only one of these links can be used; otherwise, a bridging loop might occur. However, using only one link utilizes only half of the available bandwidth. EtherChannel allows up to eight redundant links to be bundled together into one logical link. In this lab, we will configure Port Aggregation Protocol (PAgP), a Cisco EtherChannel protocol, and Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP), an IEEE 802.3ad open standard version of EtherChannel.

This simulation activity is intended to provide a foundation for understanding TCP and UDP in detail. Simulation mode provides us the ability to view the state of different PDUs as they travel through the network. Simulation mode enables us to view each of the protocols and the associated PDUs. The steps following lead us through the process of requesting network services using various applications that are available on a client PC. We will explore the functionality of the TCP and UDP protocols, multiplexing, and the function of port numbers in determining which local application requested the data or is sending the data.

For a device to communicate across multiple networks, it must be configured with an IP address, subnet mask, and a default gateway. The default gateway is used when the host wants to send a packet to a device on another network. The default gateway address is generally the address of the router interface which is attached to the local network that the host is connected to. In this activity, you will finish documenting the network. You will then verify the network documentation by testing end-to-end connectivity and troubleshooting issues.

The troubleshooting method we will use consists of the following steps:

► Verify the network documentation and use tests to isolate problems.

► Determine an appropriate solution for a given problem.

► Implement the solution.

► Test to verify the problem is resolved.

► Document the solution.

Throughout your CCNA studies, you will encounter different descriptions of the troubleshooting method, as well as different ways to test and document issues and solutions. This is intentional. There is no set standard or template for troubleshooting.

This activity is intended to provide a foundation for understanding the TCP/IP protocol suite and the relationship to the OSI model. Allows you to view the data contents being sent across the network at each layer. As data moves through the network, it is broken down into smaller pieces and identified so that the pieces can be put back together when they arrive at the destination. Each piece is assigned a specific name (protocol data unit [PDU]) and associated with a specific layer of the TCP/IP and OSI models. Simulation mode enables you to view each of the layers and the associated PDU. The following steps lead the user through the process of requesting a web page from a web server by using the web browser application available on a client PC Even though much of the information displayed will be discussed in more detail later, this is an opportunity to explore the functionality and be able to visualize the encapsulation process.

As a recently hired LAN technician, our network manager has asked us to demonstrate our ability to configure a small LAN. Our tasks include configuring initial settings on two switches using the Cisco IOS and configuring IP address parameters on host devices to provide end-to-end connectivity. We are to use two switches and two hosts/PCs on a cabled and powered network.

We will be discussing Configure hostnames and IP addresses on two Cisco Internetwork Operating System (IOS) switches using the command-line interface (CLI), use Cisco IOS commands to specify or limit access to the device configurations, use IOS commands to save the running configuration, configure two host devices with IP addresses, and finally verify connectivity between the two PC end devices.

We will first create a basic switch configuration. Then, we will implement basic connectivity by configuring IP addressing on switches and PCs. When the IP addressing configuration is complete, we will use various show commands to verify the configuration and use the ping command to verify basic connectivity between devices.

We will perform basic switch configuration tasks. We will secure access to the command-line interface (CLI) and console ports using encrypted and plain text passwords. We will also learn how to configure messages for users logging into the switch. These message banners are also used to warn unauthorized users that access is prohibited.

Hi Everyone and welcome to my Tech Heads in the KevTechify Nation.

Thanks to new technologies, networks are becoming more intelligent, programmable and software-driven. This series support this evolution and will expose you to new concepts and experiences. Best of all, this series is tied to CCNA certifications.

In this series, Practical Configuration Examples, I’ll demonstrate and explain many of the concepts of the CCNA. I’ll use actual configuration to demonstrate these. I’ll work through practical examples of how to use these technologies and concepts. I’ll enter the commands and explain what and why I am doing the thing I am doing. We’ll start with basic device configuration, then look at addressing, VLANs, Router-on-a-Stick, basic security, Wireless configuration, routing protocols like OSPF, Access Control Lists, Network Address Translation, network management, and finally network troubleshooting.

Begin preparing for a networking career with this series on Practical Configuration Examples. This is my fourth series on the CCNA. It will introduce and demonstrate how to apply and use the concepts of the CCNA. Recommended preparation for this series is my other series on the CCNA.

I’m Kevin. I am a seasoned and experienced IT professional with over 20 years of experience in network administration, IT consulting, and adult technical education. I have a primary focus on being a Solutions Architect. I enjoy the challenge of finding innovative and practical solutions for IT projects. I have been involved with extensive practical implementations in a variety of technical and operational capacities including research and development, business strategies, project management, and process analysis for clients requiring a wide variety of technology-based solutions.

I also enjoy being a Technology Mentor. With a focus on certified technical training, I can be found either in a classroom environment instructing on network infrastructure and network services; or developing dynamic and engaging training materials.
