Two weeks ago, Chad and Cristina reviewed the 1989 movie THE WIZARD featuring Fred Savage. Something that movie is best known for is its sneak preview of SUPER MARIO BROS 3. It seemed only natural that we would discuss that game for its own episode. But we had to bring in an expert in Nintendo NES games: James from @BigOleWords . Chad had been following James since he initially launched his channel 5 years ago and has been a member of his Patreon for quite some time now.

Since this is a podcast, there's no gameplay footage in this episode; but rather a fun nostalgic discussion of our memories of this game back in 1990 and how it holds up today. Last week we reviewed the movie Clerks with our new friends Kelly, Steve and Eric from the Gen X Unfiltered podcast. This week the roles are reversed: we guest starred on their podcast and talked about our first jobs as teenagers in the 1990s. Here's how they described the episode:

Kevin Smith made his debut in 1993 with CLERKS. This Cult Comedy Classic was made on a literal shoestring budget by a bunch of amateurs and it shows. And that's kind of what makes it so great. It's completely unlike anything you'd ever see in a Hollywood movie: really frank sex talk; pop culture minutia dissection; and a complete lack of a conventional plot. Also, it's hilarious (if you're not a total fuddy duddy, that is)!

We asked Kelly, Steve and Eric from @GenX_Unfiltered to discuss this movie with us. This is our first ever international collaboration as they're all from Toronto. That's appropriate considering Kevin Smith went to film school in Canada; has shot movies and TV shows there; and has often said he considers himself an honorary Canadian.

1990s Alt Rock Draft

The 1990s saw a massive evolution of rock 'n roll. The 1980s corporate sound of synths and drum machines was replaced by many sub-genres that were all quite experimental and edgy. Entire radio stations were dedicated to "Alternative Rock". It was a Big Tent term that encompassed a wide variety of artists and bands. From Alice In Chains to Dave Matthews Band to Beck to R.E.M. to Radiohead and more One Hit Wonders than you can shake a stick at!

But which songs and artists were our favorites? Since Cristina is on vacation, Chad invited Amy from @PopCultureRetrospectivePodcast back on the show along with his sister Jena and brother John to draft a Top 40 list of sorts. Each panelist took turns drafting songs from Apple Music's "90s Alternative Essentials" playlist.

MASTER OF PUPPETS by Metallica

Metallica's seminal album "Master Of Puppets" just celebrated its 40th anniversary; so what better time to discuss it than now? Even if you're not a headbanger, you're probably aware of the impact this record had on the heavy metal genre and the rock music industry. It proved that bands could make radio UNfriendly music and still sell millions of copies.

This record was quite the milestone at the time as the band had really evolved from short, thrashing jams with rather cliche lyrics; to longer, more complex song structures with poignant themes.

RUMOURS by Fleetwood Mac

Fleetwood Mac didn't invent soft rock (or "Yacht Rock" as we call it today); but they probably perfected it. If you turned on pop/rock radio in the late 1970s/early 1980s you were pretty likely to hear hits from this album such as DREAMS, YOU MAKING LOVING FUN, THE CHAIN, GO YOUR OWN WAY, etc.

And let's not forget SILVER SPRINGS, which was left off the album and was only available as a B-side single until it was included on their Greatest Hits album in 1988. Cristina says this was probably her favorite song on the record. Chad had never heard it until now.

So yes, this album contains a lot of hits, but what about the deep cuts? Do you know the infamous backstory behind the making of this album? Does it still hold up in 2026? And what was with that album cover? We discuss all these topics and more in this podcast!

MOVING PICTURES by Rush

Chad has been a Rush fan since high school, but Cristina only knew of their popular songs. Could there be a better introductory album to this band than 1981's MOVING PICTURES?

This record was a turning point for the Canadian progressive rock trio of Alex Lifeson (guitar), Neil Peart (drums/lyricist), and Geddy Lee (bass; keyboards and vocals). Each of their previous albums had only one or two radio-friendly songs, but almost every track here could have been (and SHOULD have been) a rock radio staple. In fact, if you turn on a classic rock station you're likely to hear any of the songs from Side A: TOM SAWYER; LIMELIGHT; YYZ; or RED BARCHETTA.

But let's not forget the deep cuts from Side B: THE CAMERA EYE (a progressive rock song if ever there was one); WITCH HUNT (rather didactic in retrospect but it was edgy at the time) and VITAL SIGNS (Chad's pick for the best Rush deep cut track of all time!).

MOVING PICTURES just celebrated its 45th anniversary and Chad says it rocks just as hard now as it did back then. Will Cristina agree? Listen and find out!

BATMAN: MASK OF THE PHANTASM

We're a little behind schedule, so to make up for it; here's a review of BATMAN: MASK OF THE PHANTASM Chad conducted with Rob Walker* way back in 2013! This was the first time Batman was given a full length animated film and it was even shown in cinemas (briefly). It's loosely based on Frank Miller's BATMAN: YEAR ONE and Todd McFarlane's BATMAN: YEAR TWO.

Though animation; neither this film nor Batman The Animated Series were strictly intended for children. They're just as entertaining for adults as well... especially adults of today who watched it as children.

*Rob Walker is the brother of Doug Walker aka The Nostalgia Critic aka @ChannelAwesome . Chad and Rob met way back in the MySpace days and were online buddies for years.

DISINTEGRATION by The Cure

We always intended this podcast to cover more than movies, so we're finally going to talk MUSIC for March! Cristina picked one of her childhood favorites: DISINTEGRATION by The Cure. Released in 1989, this was a major shift in tone from a band that started out as post-punk, but wound up as a pop rock singles band (much to the chagrin of bandleader Robert Smith).

Cristina had this album when it was originally released and still enjoys it today. Chad wasn't familiar with the album aside from its famous single "Lovesong." As a lover of progressive rock and metal, it was a really interesting experience. What's funny is the songs Chad liked the best, Cristina liked the least (and vice versa).

CHASING AMY

The last entry for romantic movie month (though technically a day late) is Chad's pick of Chasing Amy. This was Kevin Smith's third-ever movie and is quite the change of pace from the outrageous comedies of Clerks and Mallrats.

Ben Affleck stars in one of his first ever leading roles as comic book artist Holden O'Neil who meets-cute with fellow comic book creator Alyssa Jones (Joey Lauren Adams) who turns out to be a lesbian... or is she?

This movie was pretty progressive and groundbreaking at the time as there weren't any mainstream comedies interested in LGBT issues. But does it seemed dated and politically incorrect in 2026? (Cristina thinks so, but Chad disagrees). Is it still a legit funny comedy or just a tearjerker? Both? Neither? Listen and find out!

RUN LOLA, RUN!

There were a LOT of crime/thriller/mindbender movies in the 1990s. Quentin Tarantino, Danny Boyle and Tony Scott probably made some of the most memorable films of the genre. But one most Americans missed was the 1998 indie German film RUN LOLA, RUN!

Critics and movie nerds raved about this film at the time as it was a unique approach to the genre featuring multiple storylines and outcomes. It's set mostly in real-time and features a bumping European techno soundtrack that enhances the suspense (or drives you crazy if you hate that kind of music ha ha).

Cristina says this is one of her favorite indie movies; and much like Harold & Maude it's technically a romance story but about as far from a Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan Hollywood cookie cutter flick as you can get. Chad had never seen it until now and noticed how much it's actually a comic book-type movie as Lola seems to have superpowers.

HIGH FIDELITY

Continuing with "Romantic Movie Month", Chad picked one of his all-time favorite films: HIGH FIDELITY starring John Cusack and directed by Stephen Frears. It's one of the most original romantic comedies ever made as there are no "meet cute" moments; no melodramatic tear jerking scenes; and no race-to-the-airport ending.

This movie is like if the kids from John Hughes' 1980s movies grew up and dealt with adult problems. There's also lots of hilarious and unique Kevin Smith-style discussions of niche/geeky topics not normally included in movies like this.

Chad thinks this is a pretty much perfect movie for couples as it's got the romantic elements for women, but still has a masculine sense of humor without ever becoming vulgar or chauvinistic. Will Cristina agree? Watch and find out!

HAROLD AND MAUDE

When it comes to "cult classic" movies, HAROLD AND MAUDE is usually considered one of the greats. It's the story of a twisted young man who's obsessed with death and likes to crash funerals who crushes on an elderly woman who has similar proclivities. This film has become a cult classic likely due to the fact it mixes and defies genres. It's mostly absurdist dry comedy with some wacky slapstick, but delivered with the look and feel of an arthouse mind-bender.

Cristina says this is her favorite movie of all time and enjoys it for the comedy, romance, originality, and its overall bizarre nature. Chad had never seen so much as a clip of it and went in with a blank slate. Will he enjoy it as much as she did? Listen and find out!

THE RUNNING MAN

Cristina has been on a 1987 kick lately, so we mutually picked THE RUNNING MAN for this episode. This is one of Arnold Schwarzenegger's lesser known 80s movies; which is kind of ironic since it EPITOMIZES (or possibly parodies) the Cyberpunk dystopian/sci-fi/action genre and of course Ah-nold himself. Lots of explosions, fistfights, stunts, ridiculous costumes, and of course puns galore!

This is one of those movies that's not groundbreaking or high in artistic merit (especially compared to Blade Runner); but it sure is fun to watch. It's the Miller Lite of movies.

THE RUNNING MAN was actually based on a Stephen King novel that he wrote under a pen name. And much like The Shining, he wasn't happy with how it turned out. A supposedly more faithful adaptation was released in 2025, but neither of us has seen it as of now. Perhaps we'll review that as a bonus episode sometime?

THE PRINCESS BRIDE

The Princess Bride could be considered a perfect movie... maybe. It's got everything: adventure, fantasy, romance and of course comedy. It manages to balance these elements pretty well with a breezy story that never lags. It's also remarkably family friendly as there's something for adults and kids alike.

Cristina loved this movie as a child; Chad thought it was okay. Watching it in 2026, will it be just as fun and captivating as it was back in 1987? Watch our review and find out!

We never intended this podcast to be strictly movie reviews, but somehow that's all we did in 2025. Well it's 2026 and we decided to finally change it up and talk about a comic strip pretty much every Gen Xer, Xenial and Millenial loved: Calvin and Hobbes.

It didn't matter who you were or where you came from, it seemed impossible to dislike Calvin and Hobbes. It clearly inspired both comic strips and animation in the 1990s and well into the 21st Century. It's a shame it only lasted 10 years, but it has a timelessness to it few others can match.

When Quentin Tarantino took the movie world by storm in the 1990s with Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown, suddenly all of Hollywood wanted to emulate his style. Movies that combined hard boiled crime capers with non-linear storylines and twisted/dark humor were EVERYWHERE!

What separated GO from the pack of imitators was its approach of being a comedy first with the gritty/thrilling elements second. It was directed by Doug Liman, who previously directed Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn in "Swingers". This film has a polished studio look; but with the offbeat nature (and budget) of an indie flick.

Chad loved GO at the time and said it rivaled American Pie and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me for the best comedy of 1999. Cristina had neither seen nor heard of it until now. Will Chad find it just as fun 26 years later? Will Cristina appreciate it as much as he did? Listen and find out!

EDWARD SCISSORHANDS

It's December, so of course we've been reviewing Christmas movies all month, but we never do anything by the rules around here. This week, Cristina went with a "Christmas Adjacent" classic: EDWARD SCISSORHANDS.

Tim Burton already pulled off a "weird family-friendly comedy/fantasy" with Beetlejuice, so why not another? EDWARD SCISSORHANDS stars Johnny Depp in one of his first major films playing a modern day Frankenstein's Monster... sort of. He was created by a mad scientist (played by Vincent Prince in his final role); but is he human or a robot or some kind of magical creature? All of the above! (and yet none).

Cristina saw this when it originally was released in 1990 and it was a childhood favorite of hers. Chad had never seen it until just now. Will Cristina still love it 35 years later? Will Chad kick himself for missing out on this campy fantasy all these years? Listen and find out!

SANTA CLAUS: THE MOVIE

There have been A LOT of movies about Santa Claus, but few have told his origin story aside from 1985's SANTA CLAUS: THE MOVIE. This film was on constant rotation in Chad's house growing up in the 1980s; but Cristina had never even heard of it until now!

It stars David Huddleston as Santa Claus; Dudley Moore as his assistant elf Patch; and John Lithgow as the dastardly villain B.Z. The movie starts out as a medieval fantasy, but turns on a dime into a campy comedy once the story reaches the present day. It's a weird juxtaposition of genres to say the least.

Chad is convinced this was a mainstream movie; but Cristina thinks it was probably collecting dust on Blockbuster shelves. Does it still have the nostalgic/timeless spirit of a Home Alone or A Christmas Story; or should be better enjoyed as a memory?

GREMLINS

When you think of horror movies, family-friendly comedies probably don't come to mind. Well, that's exactly what 1984's GREMLINS is: a horror/comedy/fantasy hybrid actually intended for families.

Since Cristina loves horror movies, this was her pick for one of her favorite Christmas movies. Chad saw GREMLINS a few times as a kid, but says it didn't have the lasting impact of other Spielberg-produced adventures like The Goonies or Back To The Future.

STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL

The Star Wars HOLIDAY SPECIAL was a one-time-only airing in November of 1978. To this day, it's never received any kind of official home video release by Lucasfilm or Disney. Thankfully, some copies are available on YouTube (which is how we saw it).

Chad and Cristina had never seen it until JUST NOW! Neither of us have any memories of it as a child or even remembers hearing that it existed until well into the 21st Century. Yet, we both knew this show had a reputation for being somewhere between stupidly campy and horribly unwatchable.

The are more Christmas themed movies than you can shake a stick at, but what about Thanksgiving? The only one we can think of is 1987's PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES from writer/director John Hughes. Up until this point, most of Hughes' films had been mostly family-friendly comedies about teenagers in high school. So the premise was quite a change of pace; however the COMEDY is as funny as ever. Some say it's THE funniest comedy of his career! Especially considering it starred Steve Martin and John Candy; two absolute legends of comedy.

This was Cristina's pick which was ironic because she had never seen it until now. Chad had seen it numerous times as a kid (mostly the censored TV version). Does it still hold up in 2025? Did it really need to be rated R? Is it politically incorrect today? We discuss this and so much more!

THE THING

Halloween may be long gone, but there's no reason we can't discuss another horror movie. This time it's John Carpenter's THE THING (another 1982 pick by Cristina!). Neither of us had seen this until recently, which is quite surprising considering how much Chad likes sci-fi and Cristina like horror.

Check any list of the greatest sci-fi and/or horror movies of the 1980s and you'll likely see THE THING among the greats. But is it REALLY? You might be surprised by our take on this film!

BACK TO THE FUTURE

When we started this show we never thought we'd be going to the movie theaters for an episode. However, this is the 40th anniversary of BACK TO THE FUTURE and cinemas around the country were showing it on the big screen so how could we pass up this opportunity?!

Much like Ghostbusters, Back to the Future is a classic 80s movie that blends comedy and sci-fi perfectly. The music, the set design, the costumes, and everything about it just epitomizes 1985 (not sure how well they got 1955, though; you'll have to ask our parents about that).

This was always a favorite of Chad's, but not so much with Cristina. Would seeing it on the big screen bring back nostalgic memories? Watch and find out!

SUPERMAN
