Your Friend In The Apocalypse w/ Mister Stranger • Full Album Stream

On this episode of Study Music Podcasts, we're going to be playing the concept album from rapper HMZA. & producer 5iLL teaming up as anti-hero Mister Stranger - "Mr Stranger Is Your Friend In The Apocalypse". The abstract hip hop project features apocalyptic themes and lyrics, head-nodding beats and distinctive artwork by Matt Jennings. Not to mention creative assists from a wide array of supporting characters like producer Chris Keys, rapper Denmark Vessey, DJs aallff1 & Kanizer, instrumentalist James Changa and others.

At one point during the development of the project, group vocalist HMZA. kicked around the idea of releasing the album as a one track piece - like, one reeeeally long song, so to speak. The project is intended to be listened to in a particular order with storyline, skits, et cetera - but alas, the single track idea was abandoned by the time the albums release came around.

So, here we are, a little over 1 year since the launch of Mister Stranger, and we're bringing the "mega-mix" version of the album here to the podcast. enjoy!

This time on the podcast we've got a golden era - late 90's hip hop mix by Kimani Rogers, who you may know from New York rhyme team Masterminds...or the instrumental outfit Rogue Pharmacist...or the cult favorite indie rock/rap duo Roosevelt Franklin (w/ Mr. Len), or perhaps from his time running the now-defunct Third Earth Records in NYC, which issued many great early records from folks we love like Jean Grae, Oddjobs, Pumpkinhead, Juggaknots and, of course, Masterminds. If you're just tuning in, Masterminds and Rogue Pharmacist were some of the first established artists from outside our city and state that gave us a chance when we we're really just getting our feet wet with the label side of things. This mix was made by Kimani during the first season, as we were experimenting with what kinds of podcast episodes might work. Husayn Jay is a California based emcee and producer known for his recent work rhyming in a mc/producer duo with producer Fanatik, as well as previous collaborations with The Understudies Crew and and Sacramento collective After Hijrah. Early in our story, when we first began kicking around the idea of being a label, rather than just a “crew”, Jay was one of the first to offer a hand, presenting two discs filled with material. One disc with 20 originals. One disc with 20 freestyles, remixes and mixtape type joints. At this time, free albums & mixtapes were “hot”, so we picked some favorites from the collection, added a few bells and whistles and turned it into what would be “still vague and untitled label” release # 1. We didn’t have a digital distribution deal yet and getting your music on these new streaming things and iTunes was easier said than done. So we put the album and a rough around the edges cover art in a zip file, and sent it out to The Understudies Crew mailing list. We soon put it on this new thing called bandcamp and maybe a small number of home made CDs for the few shows we would get here and there (memory a little hazy) - to little fanfare beyond our local circuit - but the key takeaway here was that we made a product that we in our circle of friends were proud of, and we were stoked about each other’s energies and taking the first steps into the unknown together. even if we didn’t really know what we were doing at the time, with each step that would follow, we started to do a little bit better each time. Listening back to this one is special and still enjoyable to this day. Husayn Jay remains one of the most unsung emcees in California today, so after you listen to this one, go catch up on his new stuff on Spotify, you won’t be disappointed.

Back in the early days of SM, a bunch of the guys from The Understudies Crew used to send these little tapes back and forth filled with little collections of sixteen bar verses, recorded for batting practice, to keep a sharp tongue so to speak. The routine was sparked by Understudies contributor Husayn Jay, a notably proficient creator, releasing only a small fraction of his countless recordings. Sometimes they found their way onto the interwebs, many remained private, but it sparked the rest of the crew to follow suit. Here’s one of them. Gee. kicking sixteens off the head with a few classic beats selected by CTZN.
